three to seven to ten years. this is when your estrogen is starting to die down. you might feel a symptom here or there. did i feel that or not? then you go into menopause. menopause is a very clinical term. what it means is you've gone 12 months consecutively without a cycle. at that 12th month you can be like, i'm in menopause. it's that day when you reach menopause. that's when estrogen cannot give you a cycle and you've gone 12 months without a period. then after that you're post menopausal because now you've passed that menopausal phase. you stay post menopausal until you die. it should be a title you take with pride. you are post menopausal. >> i thought i was in menopause. then my period came and i was like, uh-oh. had to go all the way back to the beginning. i have got a year longer. what now? >> robin: we touched on it a little bit, about the symptoms. dr. maki, we always think about hot flashes.
8:43 am
that's just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. there's so much more. >> right? 80% of women experience hot flashes. right? [ audience reacts ] they're real. and people used to say they were benign. but they last on average for 7.6 years if you're white and ten years if you're black. and they're not benign. right? they wake us up at night? so we have disturbed sleep. they affect our mood. right? and they affect our cognitive function. we're a little foggier when we have our hot flashes. and they happen night after night. week after week. month after month. year after year. so how can that be benign? right? so we need to talk about hot flashes as something really important for women's health. and if you are a woman who has

>> i'm going to stay on hormone therapy til the day i die.
