intensifying into a category two storm overnight, which means it's packing winds of at least 100mph. forecasters say ernesto could reach cat three status before landing in bermuda tomorrow and potentially dumping up to 15in of rain there. ernest hit puerto rico as a tropical storm late tuesday, and nearly 300,000 people are still without power. >> the investigation of actor matthew perry's death has resulted in charges against five people. perry died last year after an overdose of the powerful drug ketamine. the people facing charges include two doctors and alleged drug trafficker and perry's assistant. this morning, five suspects are facing federal charges in connection to the overdose death of friends star matthew perry. >> these defendants took advantage of mr. perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. they knew what they were doing was wrong. >> last october, perry was found unconscious in his hot tub. the autopsy revealing he died from acute effects of ketamine. at

the time, he had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat his depression. >> when clinic doctors refused to increase his dosage, he turned to unscrupulous doctors who saw perry as a way to make quick money. >> at the center of the case, doctor salvatore plasencia, known as doctor p, he wrote in a text message in september 2023, quote, i wonder how much this moron will pay. plasencia, pleading not guilty to charges yesterday. his attorney says his client sold ketamine to perry but insists he did not break the law. >> he was a patient. he did receive ketamine treatment therapy under medically supervised conditions and in accordance with best medical practices. it was all above board medical treatment. >> prosecutors say perry later turned to jasmine seung ha, an alleged drug trafficker known to her customers as the ketamine queen, who provided the actor

with cheaper ketamine. >> she got $11,000 in cash, as opposed to $55,000 in cash for the same amount of ketamine, for a greater amount of ketamine, 50 vials versus 20 vials. >> seung is also linked to a 2019 overdose death. she has pleaded not guilty to the charges related to perry's death. also charged perry's live in personal assistant kenneth massa. prosecutors say he injected perry with at least 27 shots of ketamine in the five days leading up to his death, including at least three on the day he died. despite not having any medical training, he's pleaded guilty to one count. perry's family saying it has helped to know law enforcement has taken his case very seriously. we look forward to justice taking its course. if convicted, both seung and plasencia could spend the rest of their lives in prison. perry's assistant and two other suspects have pleaded guilty and are facing shorter prison sentences. >> damage is still being assessed after taiwan's second

strong earthquake in less than 24 hours this morning. 6.3 magnitude quake was centered off the nation's east coast yesterday. a 5.7 quake shook taiwan's northeast shore. >> the white house is calling the conviction of a russian american former ballerina absolutely ridiculous. xenia karolina was arrested in russia in february and was convicted of treason yesterday. she was sentenced to 12 years, all for making a $52 donation to a charity aiding ukraine. she reportedly obtained u.s. citizenship after marrying an american. meanwhile, russia's military is pulling soldiers from the front lines in eastern ukraine to battle ukrainian forces, pushing deeper into russia. president zelenskyy says his troops have taken full control of a key border town. they are setting up a military command center and distributing aid to russian residents. abc's ian pannell reports ukraine was tight lipped about the incursion. >> the united states has been ukraine's strongest ally throughout this war. and yet, it

appears it was kept in the dark about this operation before it began an astonishingly. the pentagon saying it's still looking for guidance from ukraine about their true intentions for the kursk offensive. >> as ukraine captures more russian soldiers, a prisoner exchange is being discussed. >> now to a family demanding justice. we're hearing from the wife and daughters of the man who was killed when shots rang out at a trump rally. they call him a hero, protecting his family during the assassination attempt. now the family tells our pittsburgh affiliate they've hired an attorney. this morning, the family of the pennsylvania man who was killed during the attempted assassination of former president trump is speaking out. >> he definitely was a hero. he saved his wife. he saved his child. >> one of the gunman's bullets struck corey imperator in the head. his wife says he put himself between the bullets and his family who were with him at the rally. >> i'm angry. you know, obviously, you know, my husband took a bullet for him. >> comparators wife of 29 years

experience it. >> we're going to fight and get justice because he did not deserve that. >> two other people in the crowd were also shot that day and they are recovering. >> it is time now for a look at your morning weather. >> good morning. hurricane ernesto is strengthening and will be passing very close to, if not right through, bermuda during the first half of the weekend on saturday. tropical storm force winds will pick up in bermuda beginning around 8 p.m. friday, but the core of the storm, with the fiercest gusts of wind over 100mph, will occur on saturday morning to midday. this will send some big waves and rip current dangers to the east coast of the u.s, but there will also be some showers and storms that increase for the east with heat in texas. for accuweather, i'm jeff cornish for abc news. >> coming up, why doctors are sounding the alarm over whooping cough. >> also ahead, the judge who detained a teen as she was visiting his court, is now facing a punishment of his own.

democratic national convention, starting monday on abc. >> we're back now with a colorado officer chasing two juveniles in a vehicle. you can hear that police say one of them opened fire with an ak 47 striking the officer's windshield and other parts of the vehicle. the suspects fled but were identified and were arrested earlier this week. both face attempted murder charges and four suspects have been arrested for the murder of general hospital. actor johnny wactor after interrupting thieves stealing his car's catalytic converter in may. wactor was fatally shot. three of the suspects were booked for wagner's murder. the fourth as an accessory. >> now to an update on a story from detroit, where a judge handcuffed a teenager who was visiting his court. that judge

is now facing his own punishmen. as we hear from the teen's mother. >> would you want someone to treat your child like that? >> would you even treat your child like that if he fell asleep in the courtroom? >> the distraught mother of eva goodman is speaking out after a detroit judge put the 15 year old in handcuffs during a field trip visit to his courtroom. judge kenneth king said he didn't like her attitude after she fell asleep. >> he fell asleep in my courtroom one more time. i'm putting you in the back. understood. >> he's now been temporarily removed from the bench and will undergo training after the incident. but goodman's mom is setting the record straight, explaining her daughter was tired because their family does not have a permanent home right now. >> to belittle her in front of the whole world and her friends, to make her even feel more worse about our situation. i'm a single mother. i'm trying my best. i'm doing everything that i can. >> you sleep at home in your bed, not in court. >> so the fact that he was
