but today is one of those days. just like the day before, where we have lots of sunshine in store. mild weather to finish out the week. it's shaping up to be a nice afternoon. here's a look at temperatures right now. 56 in the city. we're at 61, though in san jose. castro valley just updated to 54. good morning oakland coming in at 60 degrees in the north bay. it's at 53 in sonoma, 56 in saint helena. inland we're in the mid 50s to the mid 60s as we get you going on this friday. so kind of a carbon copy forecast just like yesterday inland today lots of sunshine. those temperatures above average upper 80s to the lower 90s. so it will feel warm again today around the bay shoreline. it's pretty bright pretty fast this morning. so expect a lot of sunshine temperatures in the mid 70s, but the wind picks up once again just like the past couple of afternoons. those winds gusting about 15 to 30mph along the coast. we will find highs in the low and mid 60s with some gusty winds. but you look at early tomorrow morning, we have a really good chance of widespread drizzle and mist. not even just the coast but inland as well.

we'll preview that coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times, andrew checking in on more of that bay area beauty. >> here's a look from our south beach camera looking at the bay bridge. of course, the good news here no issues as you make your way into or out of the east bay and san francisco. then i want to get to a commuter alert ace and smart trains seeing two issues. train one is running late 20 minutes. is the delay due to train traffic. and then for smart trip three southbound direction that is late about 15 minutes toward the sonoma county airport. so just be aware there. then we'll take you to the south bay live. look at our one on one 8-80 cam. no issues, no drama for your drive there, reggie love. >> no drama. thank you amanda. happening today, governor newsom will be in the south bay signing new legislation to combat retail theft in california. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us now. gloria, this is happening just a few days after the state legislature passed a series of bills about retail theft. >> it is reggie, and governor newsom is scheduled to sign that legislation in san jose. his office has not given specifics

about the legislation. but on monday, the state legislature sent him a package of bipartisan bills aimed at fighting retail theft. the bills address serial thieves, cargo theft and allowing law enforcement and district attorneys to prosecute. this comes as the governor's office is touting effective work from its california highway patrol task force to combat retail theft. according to the governor's office, 167 retail theft suspects were arrested in california last month. that's more than double from the previous month, with nearly 900 arrests this year, more than $7 million in stolen goods have been recovered, and the governor will be in san jose at 10:00 this morning. we'll have the event streaming for you on our apps and on abc7 news.com. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. one business owner in san francisco has crafted a new tactic that he's hoping will stop would be thieves. our cameras were there when a jewelry store jewelry store owner in the city's pacific heights neighborhood

showed us how it works. so that's what happens if somebody tries to break in after hours. the owner could trigger a fog machine and a rather intense alarm, so it disperses fog, thick, dense fog into the store. >> and it, along with a incredibly loud alarm, and you just want to run for the hills. it's that powerful. >> the fog machine security system costs several thousand dollars. >> new developments out of oakland, where police have arrested a suspect in connection to a shooting that seriously hurt a man who was napping inside his home. a 20 year old man now faces several felony charges. a man is at the live desk with what we know about the suspect and the case. yeah. >> reggie, 20 year old damon roberts of richmond is expected to appear in court again today. in a separate case, he faces charges including first and second degree robbery and possession of a machine gun. roberts is accused of firing the stray bullet that hit him in the

head while he was napping in his oakland home earlier this month. roberts was arraigned yesterday on several charges for this cas. it includes shooting into an inhabited building and possession of a firearm while on probation. kwong's family spoke with abc seven news after the shooting, and they say they want justice and now they are considering leaving oakland. >> it happened at home like everyone thinks home is the safe place to live in, but this happened at home. we feel so shocked and we don't know what to do. families kwong's family says he has had three surgeries so far and has a slim chance of regaining consciousness. >> roberts was denied bail and remains in custody. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. former president donald trump will be in the key battleground state of pennsylvania tomorrow. he's expected to expand on his economic policy plans. today, vice president harris will be in

raleigh, north carolina, to talk about her plan for the economy. and this will be her first major policy rollout since becoming the democratic nominee. the vice presidential debate now locked in, both candidates have finally agreed to the october 1st event. yesterday republican nominee senator jd vance said in a social media post that he's accepted the terms of the debate and then challenged democratic candidate governor tim walz to another debate. before that one, he proposed the date september 18th. >> the democratic national convention kicks off in chicago monday. the biggest group of delegates coming from california. vice president kamala harris's home state. many of them are from the bay area. we spoke to one of the delegates about how critical this vote is for the state's diverse communities. >> harris saw that with the muslim ban. i know that we're not going back to the four years of donald trump that really saw a rise in islamophobia and various other types of discrimination. and so, to me, the choice is clear.

>> that is harris mojaddedi. he'll be among just a handful of muslim delegates from across the country. he believes four more years of donald trump could be could usher in another wave of islamophobia. he says it's important for him to represent communities who are otherwise not heard. abc seven news anchor julian glover will report from chicago at the democratic national convention starting monday. he'll be there through thursday for harris's big speech. >> this morning, the effort to revive downtown areas across the state is heading to san diego. san francisco representative matt haney will lead a committee hearing on recovery through arts culture and entertainment. local leaders and residents will be discussing ideas to bring people and businesses back to downtown's haney. committee is holding meetings across the state all year with plans to develop strategic recommendations for cities. today's meeting starts at 10 a.m, and it will be live streamed. >> 608 this morning, let's look at our daytime highs across the region. very similar to yesterday. will be in the upper 60s in san francisco with a

windy afternoon, sunny and mild in oakland at 75. 81 in san jose, walnut creek. just like yesterday, we'll hit a high of about 90 degrees. a live look outside. this is our tam cam showing you just a little bit of fog across parts of the city right now. some patchy cloud cover in parts of the east bay, but not widespread fog this morning. so just like yesterday, we see sunshine very quickly. that sun is up here at 627 this morning. it's warm. it's breezy this afternoon. but you notice our sunset coming exactly at 8 p.m. this evening. i want to give you a heads up to some changes coming for tomorrow. it's going to look and feel a lot different for saturday. low pressure off the pacific northwest is going to influence us with clouds, some widespread mist and drizzle tomorrow. and cooler temperatures. so here's future weather. the low itself is way out here, but it's pushing a lot of cloud cover overhead. this is 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. do expect some wet conditions first thing, not only along the coast but inland as well. the weekend sunday itself is much brighter and

in qatar. but hamas is reiterating that there will be no ceasefire deal without a complete withdrawal of israeli troops from gaza. diplomats hope the talks will persuade iran and lebanon's hezbollah to hold off on retaliating for the killing of a top hezbollah commander and a hamas political leader. it's not clear how close both sides are to coming to an agreement. bart is moving ahead with plans for a new police headquarters in downtown oakland. the board approved the plans this week to purchase a vacant kaiser permanente building. they also approved money for more new faregates, designed to keep people from hopping on trains without paying. work is expected to be complete by the end of 2025. a san jose mural honoring two bay area olympians is getting a facelift. the mural, on the corner of santa clara and

fourth streets, pays tribute to sprinters tommie smith and john carlos. the pair famously raised their fists in a black power salute while on the medal podium at the 1968 mexico city olympics. smith and carlos were both student athletes at san jose state. the mural was originally painted in 2005, but it had been covered with graffiti since then. a legacy business with more than 100 years in the bay area has a new home in west oakland. >> we've been able to expand from 3000ft■!s on telegraph to 11,000ft■!s here, and add a cosmetology program, esthetics, which is skincare, and keep the barbers going as well. >> the barber and cosmetology college celebrated the grand opening of its new location yesterday, so now they're across the street from bart and near an ac transit stop. it offers $10 haircuts for seniors on tuesday. the price is $8. barbers are also trained at moeller's campuses in hayward and in san

pablo. a new sculpture in petaluma almost complete, but not everybody is excited about this unique piece. look at it. it's called fine balance and it involves two bathtubs being held up by large metal poles. some residents are unhappy with the new piece. people online have been threatening to vandalize it. once it's officially unveiled, but the artist is not deterred by the controversy. >> for people to dislike a gift, it just seems, misconceived >> there are residents who appreciate the unique nature of the sculpture. the piece costs the city about $150,000, and fillled balance will be ready for the public in a few weeks. >> an eight year old boy stole the show at one of the pie eating contests at the iowa state fair. this is zach lucas. you see him there in the orange

used to that in the month of august. but as low pressure passes by us to the north, it's going to try and instigate some drizzle, some mist out there, even a light shower. that's the pops of green. you see on your screen around the region. that even continues close to lunchtime. here. we'll still track some of that wet weather before we start to dry out. turn to partly sunny skies tomorrow afternoon and then much brighter here on sunday. so if you can push some of your outdoor plans to sunday, that's the better of the two days. highs today it's beautiful out there again for our friday afternoon 70s and 80s. lots of sunshine in the south bay along the peninsula. we'll go to 74 san mateo, 75 palo alto, 60s for the coast across the city. it is going to be a bright afternoon. the winds do pick up again, just like yesterday, gusting close to 30mph. the north bay. it's warm and sunny, 80s and 90s, widespread in the east bay. it's mild with sunshine in the 70s and low 80s, and then inland we're back into the mid 80s and mid 90s later on this afternoon. just look at the winds one more time here. that onshore flow this afternoon gusting about 20 to 35mph. so the accuweather

against 16 companies accused of creating images designed through artificial intelligence. this claim accuses the companies of running websites where people can turn anybody's likeness int. >> the impact on victims has been devastating on their reputations, their mental health, loss of autonomy and in some instances, causing individuals to become suicidal. >> the city attorney's office says many of the operators of these websites have masked their identities. a lawsuit is aiming to reveal who the people are. the city's the city attorney's office also says they're hoping to send a message to bad actors to stop this highly illegal practice. >> new developments with the former executive director of the san jose police officers association, who is facing drug charges. joanne segovia was arraigned on modified charges yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty. the new filing changed the drug. she is accused of smuggling from fentanyl to a different drug, which is also an

opioid. segovia's attorney hinted she might switch her plea to guilty as a result. it's not clear if a potential sentence would be affected by that change. that next hearing is set for october. >> reparations in california. several bills made it out of committee yesterday, and now they will head to the full assembly for a vote. one bill would create the california freedmen affairs agency that would oversee funding. another would establish the fund that would pay for reparation policies that are approved by the legislature and the governor. the third bill would require the agency to compensate families who had their property taken, essentially land restitution, and a fourth bill would issue a formal apology to black californians. a vote is expected in the coming weeks. reparation, of course, a process we've been following very closely for years now. you can watch the abc seven originals documentary california's case for reparations, diving into the groundbreaking work of the reparations task force and examining bills that came out of it. it's streaming now on demand on the abc seven bay area app. >> i am hopeful this is the last

time we're going to have to hear these self-driving waymo cars honking and it was really annoying to neighbors who had to live through it. it was coming at all hours of the day and the night. from a waymo depot off of second street in soma, keeping neighbors awake. the company says the honking is a program safety feature that is supposed to prevent slow speed collisions. neighbors tell us the honking finally stopped wednesday night as an apology. we're told waymo is treating neighbors to an ice cream social. how about some noise canceling headsets to throw those in? that would have been cute, right? but okay, ice crea. go on. >> they're going to need. not going to need those anymore. bay area music fans mourning the death of 80s rock star and longtime dj greg ken. ken and his band became popular in the bay area club scene back in the

70s. then they hit it big in the early 80s thanks to tunes like the breakup song and jeopardy! ken went on to become a popular dj on kfox radio right here in the bay area from 1996 to 2012. his longtime morning show partner and current k-fox dj chris jackson, remembered him on air yesterday. >> he taught me not to overthink things because i would say, hey, let's plan tomorrow's show. and he'd say, why? he'd say, no, that's only going to ruin it. and, you know, he was really teaching me when it comes to music or guitar, if you're thinking about it, you're not feeling it. and that's what i remember the most. >> ken died tuesday from complications of alzheimer's. he was 75. >> coming up, a blood shortage across not only the bay area, but the whole country. the urgent call for donations. >> and let's take a live look right now at the big board at the new york stock exchange. we're down about 35 points. another update on the markets next. >> then a grocery store promises to slash some prices. but there's an important caveat. first, here's drew. >> hey there, walnut creek this

morning, 639 we are looking at sunny skies out there. here's a look at the live camera. current numbers right now coming in in the low 60s, 62 degrees with those sunny skies winds. right now they're out of the west at 14mph. and we have good visibility. it's a nice view from sutro tower, where fog free from this vantage point, in fact, very limited fog out there this morning, some patchy clouds along the coast. it's another day of warm sunshine. the breeze picks up this afternoon, just like the past couple of days. in the afternoon winds about 15 to 30mph. low and mid 90s inland around the bay shoreline. we're back into the 70s with lots of sunshine along the coast. we are in the low 60s, but changes are coming as we head into the weekend. an area of low pressure is going to move just to our north tomorrow and supply us with the chance of some widespread mist and drizzle first thing tomorrow morning. so you're going to wake up. you'll notice overcast skies. cooler air has moved in. here's the area of low pressure that will push off to the north as it does, it will bring some widespread drizzle tomorrow

safe. you can find it all on our website. abc seven news.com. back to you. >> thanks, amanda. the american red cross is urgently looking for blood donations amid a nationwide emergency shortage. the organization collects 40% of the nation's blood supply, and it reports a shortage of 19,000 donations. last month, causing a drop of 25% in its supply. and they say this is due to more people traveling and weather events that canceled blood drives, including eight here in the bay area during heat waves. the red cross urges every blood type to donate, but both positive and negative. zero is needed the most in the east bay. >> this morning, the grape harvest is officially underway in livermore's wine country. it's been a challenging few years for these growers. they've had fires and drought and now a drop in demand has some concerned about oversupply. of course, that's not stopping the hard work at las positas vineyards from moving ahead. workers there started sunrise every day. yesterday they picked five and a half tons of grapes. today they'll pick another four

tons. the wine master at las positas says it's been a good growing year, and he's hoping the weather remains steady through the remainder of the season. >> so far this year, the heat wave we had was early enough. it didn't cause much damage if we were to have a heat wave, you know, between now and in the next couple of months, then we would suffer some crop loss from that. so of course we hope it doesn't happen. >> there's still a lot of time for changing weather conditions, wine, grape harvest season continues across the state from now through november. >> it's move in day at san jose state, and this year, some students are going to be living in a former hotel that has been transformed into dorms. spartan village on the paseo was most recently known as the sigma by hilton hotel. it's the area's largest post-pandemic conversion from commercial to residential space. the 13 floor tower will be housing 700 undergrad students, 124 affordable beds are reserved for students in need. the desk, wardrobes and beds are new, but couches and other furnishings remain from

squares, hosting more than 5000 episodes of the emmy award winning show. marshall enjoyed an eight decade long career in show business, first as a dj, then comedian, and eventually movies and the stage, with several appearances on broadway. he was 98 years old. >> looking to keep gas prices from soaring? governor newsom wants to try a new strategy. his new plan would require oil refineries in the state to keep a minimum supply on hand. newsom says oil companies cash in when those reserves aren't kept up, especially when a refinery goes down for maintenance. he argues that is what fuels these gas spikes. gas price spikes now, under the governor's plan, refiners would face fines if they don't keep up with minimum requirements. a petaluma jam maker with a new flavor named kamala jam says she's been overwhelmed by orders after our story aired about her earlier this week. leslie goodrich, owner of lala's jam bar in petaluma, says she now has hundreds of orders to fill. kamala jam is made with

raspberries, white sugar and blueberries, so it's red, white and blue and $5 from each $15 eight ounce jar are donated to the harris walls campaign. goodrich says she sent $6,500 to the campaign this week. >> marine mammal officials say they've had to rescue close to 106 sea lions from the central coast. scientists believe domoic acid that runs in deep ocean water has been brought up by strong winds that causes illnesses, that affects the central nervous system of mammals, causing a bigger bloom that's affecting more animals over a larger area than we've seen in the in all the years in the past. it's believed sea lions consume contaminated fish and marine life, making them sick. the water is getting warmer. that's caused by climate change. it's also suspected of contributing to high domoic acid levels. >> we have to tell you about this fish. >> we don't like this fish. >> it's dead.

>> and these people are playing with it. you know what? it's not the fish we don't like. it's what's going on with the fish. leave the fish alone. >> look at it. >> okay, this is the back story. visitors to la jolla beach north of san diego, stumbled on this deep sea fish. it's rarely been seen by humans. it's an or fish, and they nicknamed it the doomsday fish because it has a mythical reputation in parts of the pacific island nations to predict upcoming natural disasters. >> they wash up on the beach. there before or after, depending on who you talk to, earthquake or major earthquake or tsunami. and this has been centuries in japanese mythology and folklore. >> why do we have to see the dead fish in the jars in the jar? >> so this fish can grow? okay, this is okay. to 30ft in it washed ashore in la jolla cove. it normally swims as deep as 300 to 600ft below the surface. it's rarely seen above its deep water habitat. this
