an alarming discovery at several oakland schools has led is found in the drinking water. questions are being raised about what is being done to keep students safe. good evening i'm j.r. stone testing shows lead in the drinking water at schools across oakland. district leaders say these lead concerns come from

bigger problems aging schools they can't afford to replace. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at what's now being done to keep everyone safe. >> i absolutely want more transparency. we demand more transparency. >> stuart lobel is a sixth grade teacher at frick united academy of language in east oakland. most of that public school's drinking fountains are now off limits, with signs saying do not drink the water. parents and staff at frick got this letter from the school district last week saying water testing found five fixtures at your school with lead levels above five parts per billion, three times higher than the epa's recommended threshold. abc seven news obtained the water testing report dated april 2024. lobel is asking what took so long to inform parents and staff of the findings. >> students have been going to that school and summer school included for this whole time, drinking that water, which is completely unacceptable and infuriating.

>> district officials say frick is one of 22 0 usd campuses where elevated lead levels have been found. parents and teachers vented their frustrations at last week's school board meeting. >> we are demanding safe drinking water for our students immediately. transparency about what's happening. >> this is a real crisis and we're taking it very seriously. >> oakland school board president sam davis says communication with schools needs to be better. he says the district has been aggressive in testing water since 2017, and is now taking steps to fix the problem. >> so we need to make sure that there's testing available for families to find out if they were exposed to lead. and we need to invest in remediating the issue. >> the district says new water filters and pipes will be installed at campuses and will be tested again to comply with safety standards. >> do you believe these schools are safe for teachers and for kids? >> we need to make them safe. >> our buildings are old. we know we need to test on a regular basis and do the abatement. the root is we need brand new buildings. that is the

solution we obviously can't do that. >> stuart lobel wants a campus with safe drinking water. in the meantime, he hopes the community can help keep students hydrated. >> so i would call on partners from the community to help us provide bottled water to school sites in oakland. >> in oakland, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> cornell. thanks so much to the south bay, where one person is dead following a fire this morning at a mobile home in mountain view. firefighters say it started just before 6 a.m. on moffett boulevard near middlefield road. one firefighter dislocated a shoulder when the floor of the home collapsed. fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes. the victim's name has not been released and the cause is under investigation. firefighters are trying to figure out the cause of a fire that sent up a massive plume of smoke over san jose this morning. you see that right here? fire was on stone avenue just off of highway 87, in south

san jose. the address is a scrap metal yard. it's not clear exactly what was burning, but firefighters tell us no one was hurt and no buildings were burned. video out of the north bay shows the frantic moments as firefighters kept a fast moving fire from reaching homes. it started this morning in a commercial building on red hood, red hill avenue in san anselmo, triggering evacuations as it spread quickly to the brush at the back of the property. crews got the fire under control before it reached the homes nearby. ross valley fire tells us the neighbors defensible space made the difference here. no word yet on how this fire started. we are going to turn now to whether it's safe to say that some of us were checking the calendar today, today, to see if it really was august. we actually saw a little bit of rain in parts of the bay area. spencer christian here with your accuweather forecast. okay. >> it certainly didn't look or feel like august. more like

november or december. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see why we had and have the weather that developed today. big low pressure system just off the northern california coast there. and that has been kicking moisture into the bay area and into the pacific northwest. a lot more rain to our north than we received here in the bay area in fact, we didn't really receive any measurable rain this morning, but it was drizzly and damp across much of the bay area that has tapered off, as you can now see. but those clouds will redevelop during the overnight hours. here's the forecast animation. there'll be lots of drizzle and light shower activity just offshore. some of that drizzle may work its way onshore during the early morning hours, so there may be another few damp spots tomorrow morning, but not quite so much. so many spots as we saw this morning. and then the clouds will pull back to the coastline, giving us a mainly sunny afternoon. so rainfall estimates in terms of any measurable rain zero. there may be trace amounts, but nothing that would measure or that would really be called rain. i'll have the warmer forecast coming up a little bit later. j.r. >> spencer thank you so much.

the fda is close to approving updated covid 19 vaccines targeting the latest virus variants as soon as next week, according to the washington post. the updated shots could be available before labor day. both pfizer and moderna say their vaccines should be available to consumers at pharmacies within a week, once the fda signs off on them. the new vaccines target newer versions of the omicron variant. the news comes as the u.s. is dealing with the largest summer surge of the virus in the past two years. we are following the story of multiple scandals in the antioch police department, fueling a staffing crisis. tonight, we're learning that the desperate hiring situation is not even close to being solved. the interim police chief says it could take a year to get staffing back to full capacity, with multiple officers on leave and dozens of positions open. antioch police are facing multiple investigations by the state and federal government.

plus several civil lawsuits over alleged misconduct, including a racist text message scandal. this week, the antioch city council agreed to hire a new police captain to help manage the department. antioch police have two captains right now, but one of them is on leave and expected to retire. >> the absence of a permanent captain has had some significant impacts on our operations, creating challenges that we are doing our best to manage and allowing us to hire. this position, i think, is going to fill a critical need to provide stability and management. >> the interim police chief says the department has to hire well over 35 police officers to get back to full staffing. hundreds of immigrants and their supporters are in the middle of a march with a message in the bay area. members of the northern california coalition for immigration reform began a 48 mile trek from san jose to san francisco today. marchers

say they want to be seen, recognized and legalized. they are calling on the presidential candidates to consider changes to immigration law, including the right to apply for permanent residency after seven years. the walk ends at san francisco city hall on monday. happening tomorrow. there's a fundraiser for a beloved oakland bookstore that was heavily damaged in a fire. a gofundme has raised well over $200,000 for east bay booksellers on college avenue. gilman brewing in berkeley is hosting tomorrow's event, which will feature local authors. the bookstore's owner plans on using the money to pay employees and find a temporary location to reopen. barring the unforeseen, this weekend will be the final battle of the bay series between the giants and the a's. the a's are set to move to sacramento next season. abc seven news reporter anser hassan went to the coliseum today. fans of both teams told him what happens on

building, which housed the school cafeteria. that was nine years ago, and it's been a long time coming. >> the facility burned down in 2015, and it was just a small cafeteria at the time. and so we're really glad to see this reopen as a multi-purpose room with a gym with a sound system, with a brand new kitchen. just a lot of features that are it's just such a beautiful building. >> the new multi-purpose room at claremont is the first major project to be completed, with funds from measure y, which was approved by oakland voters in 2020. on the peninsula, whales are making their presence known along the coast of pacifica in recent days. these photos and videos were recorded by viewer maria escalante at linda mar beach this week. experts tell us changing ocean temperatures are sending the whales food sources, including anchovies and krill, closer to shore, which explains the increase in sightings as the whales get ready for winter. lowriders cruised onto the

at what brought us today's unusual weather. nice steady onshore flow. we have a low pressure system spinning offshore that has produced some pretty well earlier in the evening. some pretty strong winds right now. the winds are relatively light, but it's breezy out there. but of course that system offshore has kicked up a lot of rainfall to our north. and a little bit of it fell here in the bay area this morning. right now we're looking at the 24 hour temperature change, indicating that most inland areas away from the bay and the coast are about 2 to 4 degrees cooler than they were this time last night. so let's take a closer look. right now in san francisco, 61 degrees, we have mid 60s at oakland, hayward, san jose, 63 at redwood city, 61 at half moon bay. here's a view from mount tam. look at this. just a thin little sliver of some clouds pushing out over the bay. so a nice clear late night view from mount tam looking out over the bay. 62 degrees and santa rosa right now. and in napa, petaluma 59. and we have low to mid 60s at fairfield, concord and livermore. moving along, we'll take a look at our forecast headlines overnight. we'll see increasing clouds going into the early morning hours with some spotty drizzle. mainly mainly

offshore though not not onshore. and then tomorrow bright and breezy as we start to get a little bit sunnier, a little bit drier and going into early next week it will be sunny or still with a brief warm up coming our way on monday and tuesday. but for tonight, during the overnight hours, see these little patches of drizzle offshore? that pattern will continue. some of it may work its way onshore. actually but most locations will be dry on land during the overnight hours. and as we get into the mid morning hours tomorrow, we'll see the clouds dissipating and the skies becoming sunnier. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s, a little milder in spots like fremont, antioch, san jose where lows will drop down to only about 60 to 62 degrees, then highs tomorrow 60 three half moon bay 67. here in san francisco around the bay shoreline. oakland 7274 down in fremont. we'll see. mainly low to mid 70s in this area. but inland areas, especially the inland east bay, will warm into the mid 80s. whereas down in the south bay we'll see mainly upper 70s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and as you can see tomorrow will be another

cooler than average day but warmer than today with mid 80s inland mid 70s around the bay shoreline. then the warming begins on monday. monday and tuesday. as a matter of fact, we'll see high temperatures inland going from 90 to about 94 degrees. and that two day period mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline monday and tuesday. but notice the cooldown follows or starts to it begins, i should say on wednesday. and look at how cool it's going to be going into the end of next week. temperatures will be about 8 to 12 degrees below average for this time of the year, and our inland areas only up to about 84, where we often see 9496 degrees inland this time of the year. and around the bay shoreline, we'll see only about 70 degrees. so it will be cool again late next week, but probably not quite so misty as this morning was. >> i got a text from a friend in tiburon. she said, what is going on? it is raining here. and i said, what is this, a fake tax? and she said, no, i'm for real. >> the rain did come down. it wasn't very heavy or measurable, but there were wet spots all around the north bay this morning enough to get you wet.

a stunt called bike surfing. it's performed by hopping on a moving bike with one foot on the seat and the other on the handlebars, and staying on until the forward motion stops. now yesterday, 19 year old brock johnson set out to break the guinness world record here of 80m. the bmx stunt cyclist shattered the previous record mark. in fact, he didn't stop until he had traveled 200m. that's a little more than two football fields. >> this whole feeling on top of the bike is just surreal, and that was just truly amazing and what a great gift to be out here

well, we didn't have a bath this morning, but we had little pockets of rain overnight. we'll see pockets of drizzle, mainly offshore. some of it may move onshore, but it won't be a big deal. the clouds will dissipate by mid-morning, giving way to mainly sunny skies. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast. low to mid 70s around the bay. mainly mid 80s in the warmest inland areas. so nice and mild but below average for this time of the year. now monday and tuesday as you look at the accuweather seven day forecast, we'll have a little bit of a warm up for a couple of days. high temperatures climbing back into the typical range for this time of the year. mid 90s inland by tuesday upper 70s around the bay which is pretty warm. but then temperatures will taper off on wednesday and as we go into the end of next week, temperatures will once again be below average, but under mostly sunny skies and very pleasant conditions. just a little bit cooler than your typical late august weather. >> it's good news for the kids because some of those old schools can get hot. >> they certainly can, and they won't need the air conditioning. late next week because it will be pretty cool. >> wonderful. thank you so much,

happening this weekend. i mean, you talk about sad the a's and giants playing at the coliseum for the last time before the a's moved to sacramento next season and then eventually maybe to las vegas. the a's took game one tonight and have a chance to win the season series with a victory on sunday. bob melvin grew up in the bay area, went to cal and managed the a's for 11 years, getting 853 wins, the most by an oakland manager. he's now in his first season as the giants skipper. while the a's don't play their final home game at

the coliseum for another month for melvin. these are his last two games there, and it's bittersweet. >> you know, at the end of the season, it's going to be gone for good. and in our case it's after tomorrow's game. so i've been here a lot. i love this place. so i'm going to miss it. it's going to be sad. you know we'll see how we get through tomorrow. but today is just about winning a game and, you know, probably a little bit more i don't want to say emphasis. you're trying to win every game. but this is the last bay bridge series, so it would be nice to play well. >> prior to the game, the a's inducted their 2024 hall of fame class, including legendary broadcaster bill king, shortstop miguel tejada, catcher terry steinbach and slugger jose canseco. former a's manager tony la russa introduced canseco and helped him into his new green jacket. look at those guns he's got cannons. still to this day, and canseco couldn't hold back his emotions. being back at the coliseum, i'm an emotional wreck right now.
