look for full sunshine by about 10:00 inland or sooner, and then across the bay throughout the later morning hours. we're going to climb through the low 80s inland around the bay. it's in the low 70s today from fremont and hayward. petaluma. we'll look at temperatures in the mid 70s. so still very pleasant. and then as we get into the evening hours the fog returns and we'll look for that warming trend to boost our temperatures more so for your monday. zach. >> lisa. thank you. it's been eight months since suicide deterrent nets were installed below the golden gate bridge and now bridge. authorities say the nets are working and saving lives. according to our partners at the san francisco standard, four people have died by jumping off the bridge this year. but that's about 20% of the annual average for the state. the $200 million barrier sits 20ft below the bridge and extends 20ft out. it stretches across the entire bridge. oakland teachers and parents want more answers surrounding the lead recently found in multiple schools

drinking water. district leaders a bigger problem that old schools cannot afford to replace. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at what's being done to keep everyone saf. >> i absolutely want more transparency. we demand more transparency. >> stuart lobel is a sixth grade teacher at frick united academy of language in east oakland. most of that public school's drinking fountains are now off limits, with signs saying do not drink the water. parents and staff at frick got this letter from the school district last week saying water testing found five fixtures at your school with lead levels above five parts per billion, three times higher than the epa's recommended threshold. abc seven news obtained the water testing report dated april 2024. lobel is asking what took so long to inform parents and staff of the findings. >> students have been going to that school and summer school included for this whole time, drinking that water, which is completely unacceptable and infuriating. >> district officials say frick is one of 22 o.s.d. campuses

where elevated lead levels have been found. parents and teachers vented their frustrations at last week's school board meeting. >> we are demanding safe drinking water for our students immediately. transparency about what is happening. >> this is a real crisis and we're taking it very seriously. >> oakland school board president sam davis says communication with schools needs to be better. he says the district has been aggressive in testing water since 2017, and is now taking steps to fix the problem. >> so we need to make sure that there's testing available for families to find out if they were exposed to lead, and we need to invest in remediating the issue. >> the district says new water filters and pipes will be installed at campuses and will be tested again to comply with safety standards. do you believe these schools are safe for teachers and for kids? >> we need to make them safe. >> our buildings are old. we know we need to test on a regular basis and do the abatement. the route is we need brand new buildings. that is the solution. we obviously can't do

that. >> stuart lobel wants a campus with safe drinking water. in the meantime, he hopes the community can help keep students hydrated. >> so i would call on partners from the community to help us provide bottled water to school sites in oakland. in oakland, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> now to a deadly mass shooting in the city of oakland. two people died after a total of four people were shot following an argument. police say it happened yesterday morning on 83rd avenue, about a block away from international boulevard. investigators believe a group of people were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun and opened fire. the shooter took off in a car. police found two people dead. the other two were taken to the hospital in critical condition. there are no details. developing news. vallejo police are searching for the person responsible for shooting at officers. this weekend. police say someone shot at two police officers while they were on patrol near the vallejo municipal marina saturday. it happened around 1 a.m. between

harbor way and mare island way. the officer's patrol car was struck by at least one bullet. none of the officers involved were injured. and we're following the story of multiple scandals in the antioch police department, fueling a staffing crisis. the interim police chief says it could take a year to get staffing back to full capacity. right now, multiple officers are on leave and dozens of positions are open. antioch police are facing multiple investigations by the state and federal government, plus several civil lawsuits over alleged misconduc, including a racist text message scandal. the antioch city council recently agreed to hire a new police captain to help manage the department. apd has two captains right now, but one of them is on leave and expected to retire. >> the absence of a permanent captain has had some significant impacts on our operations, creating challenges that we are doing our best to manage and allowing us to hire. this position, i think, is going to fill a critical need to provide stability and management. >> the interim police chief says

the department has to hire over 35 police officers to get back to full staffing in the south bay. one person is dead following a fire at a mobile home in mountain view. firefighters say it started yesterday morning on moffett boulevard near middlefield road. they found the resident inside. one firefighter dislocated a shoulder when the floor of the home collapsed. fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes. the cause is under investigation and firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire. that led to a massive plume of smoke over san jose. that fire was on stone avenue, just off highway 87, in south san jose yesterday. it happened at a scrap metal yard. firefighters tell us no one was hurt and no buildings were burned. and in the north bay, video shows the moments firefighters kept flames from reaching homes in san anselmo. we first told you about that story on abc seven mornings. it started in a commercial building on red hill avenue, triggering evacuations as flames spread to the back of the property. crews did get the

fire under control before it reached the homes nearby. ross valley fire tells us the neighbors defensible space made the difference. no word yet on how the fire started. happening today, there's a fundraiser for a popular oakland bookstore that was damaged in a fire. a gofundme has raised well over $200,000 for east bay booksellers on college avenue. gilman brewing in berkeley is hosting today's event, which will feature local authors. the bookstore owner plans on using the money to pay employees and find a temporary location to reopen. today is the final battle of the bay bridge series between the giants and the a's. the a's are set to move to sacramento next season. abc seven news reporter anser hassan went to the coliseum and talked to fans about the importance of this matchup. reporter when a's pitcher michael martinez struck out the giants casey schmidt, it was game over. >> we did it. and one game closer to the end of a rivalry, to the end of an era. >> this is legacy coming to an

are walking a 48 mile trek from san jose to san francisco. marchers say they want to be seen, recognized and legalized. and they're calling on the presidential candidates to consider changes to immigration law that would include the right to apply for permanent residency after seven years. the walk ends at san francisco city hall tomorrow, and in the east bay claremont middle school in oakland is celebrating a new addition to campus nearly a decade in the making. a grand opening was held for a new multi-purpose room, and it's a long awaited opening to a fire on campus, severely damaged the old building, which housed the school cafeteria. that was nine years ago, and it's been a long time coming. >> the facility burned down in 2015, and it was just a small cafeteria at the time. and so we're really glad to see this reopen as a multi-purpose room with a gym with a sound system, with a brand new kitchen. just a lot of features that are it's just such a beautiful building. >> the new multi-purpose room at

claremont is the first major project to be completed with funds from measure y that was approved by oakland voters in 2020. today is the last day to see comic book sci fi and fantasy characters on full display in san jose. galaxycon wraps up later today, and it's bringing large crowds to the convention center and around the city of san jose. the popular fandom convention is being held in that city for the first time. it's a chance for fans to meet their favorite characters and pick up some intergalactic merch. i got to see my favorite star trek characters when i covered the story friday. yay! doors open at 10 a.m. today, and william shatner is set to make his appearance later on. and it was a lively night on the streets in san francisco's richmond district. hundreds turned out for the neighborhood's latest heart of the richmond district night market. the family friendly event offers food, live music, shopping, and more. organizers and city leaders are counting on the night markets to help local businesses and boost community morale. >> it's been really successful and we've had like big crowds

tradition. so good for them. but we also have a lot of fun here in the bay area. so let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen to see how the weather is going to be. for all the activities happening out here. >> yeah, very nice already. we're looking at some really nice pictures. our usual low clouds and fog. that pattern is back in place and that will allow for a nice afternoon sea breeze and eliminating all that extra cloud cover. the moisture, the humidity. mother nature's free ac back today. those breezy winds. but we will continue the temperature roller coaster as we go through the week ahead. you'll see that in just a moment, but that system spinning to the north and west of us. he'll still has about a quarter of an inch of rain for seattle today, and then a ridge of high pressure to the south, that one that kept visiting us over the summer will push it out of the way. there's a look at mount tam this morning, where you can see how nice it is to start your sunday 59, in san francisco. it is mild. oakland, hayward and san jose all in the mid 60s. we

had that extra humidity yesterday, a little fog, half moon bay and from our sutro tower camera, the marine layer is with us 54 santa rosa, where you also have some fog. 57 in napa with low 60s in concord. so a gorgeous start to the day with the exploratorium camera here. the coastal fog is going to stick around, so we'll have that mist and drizzle right at the shoreline. so if you have any beach plans, you may want to keep that in mind. bright and breezy, away from the coast and looking at this slight warming trend to continue into monday and tuesday. so a couple pretty nice days on the way. there's what's left of the system there. maybe a quarter of an inch of rain, portland a couple hundredths. and then as we get into the next couple of days, we'll have our typical pattern. but the things are going to change by the end of the week. so there's the system of today, the one that's moving away. then we get the ridge that's going to push in a warmer days for your tuesday. this will be the warmest day. d en into the

see how compressed that low cloud deck is. so it's not going to last long. mid 80s today from pleasanton and danville and looking at 70s around oakland and over into the east bay, parts of the bay shore, certainly comfortable with that sea breeze on the way. but at the coast it's limited sun. we have mist and drizzle right now. half moon bay, pacifica. partly cloudy later on today and we'll talk about more in detail about that warming trend in a few minutes. zach. >> sounds good. lisa thank you. breaking news out of the east bay. residents were forced out of their homes overnight when a three alarm fire erupted at an apartment complex in pittsburgh. you can see flames on the roof as firefighters were on one of the units balcony. it happened at the woodland hills apartment homes on west buchanan road. firefighters are still on scene right now. mopping up. it's not yet known what started that fire, but we will keep you updated as new information comes in on air and online at abc7 news.com. to your voice, your vote. the democratic national convention kicks off tomorrow,

and this will be a historic convention after president joe biden left the ticket and vice president kamala harris taking his place. abc news reporter jacqueline lee joins us now live from chicago. jacqueline, we're glad to have you here. what is the atmosphere like as preparations are now underway? >> hey, zach, good morning to you. look, the energy is electric here in chicago ahead of the democratic national convention. and democrats are determined to beat former president donald trump ahead of the november election. for the next four days, chicago will be decked out in blue democrats united ahead of the november presidential election, determined to have nominee kamala harris win the presidency. the convention no doubt historic after top democrats forced president joe biden to drop his bid for reelection, he couldn't shake a flood of concerns about his mental fitness after an embarrassing june debate against former president trump. >> if the covid excuse me with dealing with everything we have to do with fivethirtyeight's, polling averages show harris

tomorrow. he's going to be there through thursday for harris's big speech. and large scale protests are expected at the dnc. coming up on this week, martha raddatz talks to chicago mayor brandon johnson about how the host city has prepared for the four day event. you can watch the full interview on this week at eight this morning right here on abc seven. and new this morning, secretary of state antony blinken is set to arrive in israel to push for a cease fire and hostage deal in gaza. it's blinken's ninth trip to the region since the war began on october seventh. he is set to meet with to meet with israeli officials today. prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office says he also met with negotiators recently. they say they're optimistic about reaching a ceasefire deal. former new york congressman george santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple counts in his federal fraud case. santos is scheduled to appear at a court hearing tomorrow on long island. the news comes weeks before jury selection for the case is set to begin. santos has previously pleaded not guilty to a range of

financial crimes. that includes lying to congress about his wealth, collecting unemployment benefits while working, and using campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses. at least 23 people are hurt after a ferris wheel caught on fire in germany. it happened during the high field music festival last night. flames started on one gondola then spread to a second one. now no one was on the two gondolas when the flames erupted, and the condition of the people injured is not known. police are still trying to figure out what caused that fire. when it comes to mental health, the number to know is 988. but many don't know that. and officials in one bay area county want that to change. now there's a new campaign to help those in crisis. >> santa clara county crisis and suicide prevention hotline. since 2022, 988 has been the suicide and crisis lifeline, simplified from what many call the difficult to remember one 800 number. >> people are encouraged to call if they're experiencing thoughts of suicide, mental health

related distress, worried about a loved one or need emotional support on the other. end of the line are staff and volunteers trained to help the mental health community workers, so they have a background in behavioral health services. >> many of the volunteers have family members or themselves that have been involved with with mental health issues, so they come with a sensitivity. >> in its first year, the santa clara county crisis line answered nearly 21,000 calls, 5% of them resulted in a field visit by one of its three mobile crisis units. >> despite these numbers, i am still finding that too many people don't know about 988. >> so they've announced a new campaign to spread the word and also share what's new since it first launched. >> text and chat is now a viable alternative to calling 988, and we have staff that have been trained in how to work within text and chat, and it's beginning to pick up. so it is for spanish and english. >> the call option is still in place for more than 200 languages. and while santa clara county officials say it's 988, crisis line isn't getting as

many calls as it can across the country. other centers have seen an influx. the substance abuse and mental health services administration said 40% more people have been helped since before the 988 hotlines national launch, but abc news has reported that many centers have struggled to hire and retain staff to keep up. in santa clara county, officials said its team is ready to take on any more calls. this new campaign brings in 65 volunteers who work various shifts, so we have some capacity to ramp up additional callers if we need them. the outreach campaign is being rolled out through a social media blitz, along with print and digital ads. and though this campaign is aimed at santa clara county residents. 988 is a number available to all who need it and will direct you to the crisis center closest to you. we will tell you that number one more time. it is absolutely worth repeating. it is nine, eight, eight. and for local resources, go to abc7 news dot com slash. take action. a new jail will be on the market soon

dustin dorsey tells us what's coming next. >> this is one of the most difficult votes that i will be taking. >> not often does a unanimous decision have such hesitation, but that was the case when the bay area housing finance authority voted to pull an affordable housing bond from the november ballot, meaning $20 billion for housing projects is now off the table. santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez was among the reluctant yes votes. >> we know that we need the best shot at communicating with the voters in a way that helps people understand how important this opportunity is to getting housing built in our community, and that the timing was off. the bond would have raised funds through a surcharge on property tax bills and distributed those significant dollars to bay area counties based on their contributions, including big dollars to big cities. >> with 2 billion coming to san jose alone in the north bay, 2 billion would have been spread out among the four counties, and the other five counties would have gotten around 2 billion each, including 2.5 billion for

santa clara county money. supervisor chavez says, could have gone a long way. we have 12,000 homes somewhere in the pipeline that are affordable, that just need a little bit more money to get over the finish line and get built. >> 12,000. so for us, this is a significant loss when the need for housing is top of mind. >> as the state continues to clean up encampments and move homeless off the streets. why this vote? the commissioners say there is not enough support for the measure at this time. only 55% approval in recent polls. disappointing, but there's hope for a future ballot. >> i would call for and ask that we all take that energy of disappointment to ensure that prop five passes, to ensure that that very first step takes place so that we can move forward with this when it comes through again. >> prop five would lower voter approval thresholds from 67% to 55. if this passes in november, an effort to get the bay area affordable housing bond approved could come in 2026, finally providing the money bay area

can see from our roof camera that marine layer is compressed close to the ground as high pressure builds in. and that weight of the atmosphere really pressing the clouds to the surface here. so nice view to start out with that sun up at 628. it sets up earlier and earlier. obviously and we're looking at before 8:00 that sunset at about seven 5757 in napa, 62 in concord. and our final stop here, coastal fog and drizzle is going to stay right at the shoreline today. so if you're headed to the coastline, keep that in mind. near 60 degrees with the gray sky but bright and breezy for the rest of us, it's going to be a nice day with warmer numbers through the 80s. inland 70s around the bay and we'll take it a few degrees higher into your monday and tuesday before we cool things back for the middle of the week. so low clouds and fog this morning. patchy it pulls back. and then as we get into your sunday night, pushing across the bay again, again. but early monday it doesn't last. we'll see this eroding quicker
