everybody is alive. >> flames devour much of a 16 unit apartment building in the east bay. what residents say helped everyone get out alive and cries for help coming from under the great highway. take crews 20ft below ground. abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> frankly, it'll be like a rock concert. i think people are going to be cheering and pretty excited. >> the governor of illinois has big expectations for the democratic national convention. we begin tonight with a look at what we can expect. thanks for joining us i'm j.r. stone. happening now delegates and politicians are gathering in chicago for the dnc. abc news reporter christiane cordero is live at the united center in chicago with a look at how the democrats are trying to build on their momentum. christiane reporter. >> well, j.r. the balloons are up in the rafters. the

soundcheck is happening right behind me, and the stage is set down below as delegates arrive here in chicago by the thousands. it's an event that takes years to plan. and this year, with a last minute change in plans, vice president kamala harris and running mate minnesota governor tim walz are traveling through pennsylvania en route to the democratic national convention. >> the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us. that's what this campaign is about. yes, it is about winning. and we will win. and we will win in the arena. >> this week, a packed schedule that includes speeches from the obamas and the clintons. it starts with president joe biden on monday, less than one month since he dropped out of the race. >> well, i think the momentum is continuing to build, so i don't think we've reached even the top of where the momentum is going. and then we just need to roll on through to november. >> a new abc news washington post ipsos poll shows the harris walz ticket going into the convention, with momentum leading among all adults, 50% to trump and vance's 45%. outside

the margin of error, vance today shrugged it off on fox news. we can't worry about polls. >> we have to run through the finish line and encourage everybody to get out there and vote. >> trump still has the upper hand on issues related to immigration and according to the same poll, trump leads harris by nine points in trust to handle the economy and inflation. harris recently pledging to build more housing down payment assistance for first time homebuyers and a ban on price gouging on food and groceries. trump calls her agenda, quote, communist, instead, vowing mass deportations and increased tariffs. >> i want to cut taxes on americans while putting tariffs on china and foreign countries to bring our jobs back home to pennsylvania, and to take in billions and billions of dollar. >> trump and vance plan to spend the week countering all of this here in chicago, with several events in battleground states, including arizona, north carolina and nearby wisconsin. j.r. >> well, chicago, like san francisco, is a city where other states have bussed undocumented

immigrants. how does that issue of immigration play into this convention? >> yeah, as you mentioned, right. tens of thousands of people in the past couple of years of migrants. and so it is as much of an issue as it is there in the bay area, and it's one that a lot of americans say is one of the top issues of this election. we've seen the harris walz ticket in the past month. be one of, you know, that they're trying to pledge decency. they're trying to, as they say, fight for the future and fight for freedoms. and so we'll see how that message balances with this very critical issue, and one that former president donald trump seems to have the upper hand on, according to our latest polls, jr. >> christiane cordero in chicago tonight. thank you so much. moving along. abc seven news anchor julian glover will report from chicago at the democratic national convention starting tomorrow. we'll have live coverage on abc seven news beginning at 4 p.m. but julian arrived this afternoon and is already giving us a look at

what's happening. >> hey there jr. good evening. from the united center. this is one of the two sites that will be playing host to the democratic national convention over the course of the next four days. security understandably tight. more than 2500 chicago police officers and hundreds of secret service members. all here to protect this very site. the reason more than 50,000 people are expected to be here for the democratic national convention, including some 4000 delegates, the largest contingent of delegates coming from the state of california and many of them from the bay area, will be speaking with them throughout the week here. more than anything, of course, this is a celebration of the bay area's very own vice president, kamala harris, as she makes the case for why she should be the next president of the united states instead of another four years of former president donald trump. vice president kamala harris is not here yet. no sightings so far. her running mate, governor tim walz of minnesota, is not here yet. they kicked off a bus tour in pennsylvania today. they will be crisscrossing the state of course, a state that could potentially decide the fate of november's election. you can

also expect every living democratic president to be in attendance over the next four days. but let's tell you about the headliners for tomorrow, 2016 presidential candidate, the democratic nominee, hillary clinton, will be here along with first lady doctor jill biden. and then the big headliner, the keynote speech for the evening. president joe biden will be delivering his forceful remarks, we're told, as to why his vice president should be the next president of the united states. a lot to cover. we'll have it all for you right here on abc seven news for now, reporting outside of the united center, julian glover, abc seven news julian, thanks so much. >> we look forward to your coverage. other speakers featured at the dnc on tuesday, former president barack obama and second gentleman doug emhoff will take the stage. vp nominee tim walz delivers his acceptance speech on wednesday, preceded by former president bill clinton, speaker emerita nancy pelosi and transportation secretary pete buttigieg. on thursday, the final day of the dnc, vice president harris will accept the

convention's nomination for president on the eve of the dnc. pro-palestinian activists rallied to send a message to vice president kamala harris, demanding she commit to an arms embargo on israel. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has details and reaction from oakland. harris, harris, you will see. >> harris. harris. you will see palestine will be free. >> hundreds of pro-palestinian activists taking to the streets of oakland, hometown of vice president kamala harris. >> she might have started here, but does that mean we're going to claim her? no. >> this group gathering on the eve of the democratic national convention, demanding that harris commit to an arms embargo on israel. just days after the biden administration's approval of a $20 billion weapons package to israel. we see it as critical that in a moment when working people are being squeezed by skyrocketing costs of living, that money, not go to bomb

children in gaza. activists say that money should be invested in local communities like oakland instead. i'm reminding you it's your duty to stand by palestinians. pro-palestinian protesters have followed harris on the campaign trail. she was interrupted during a recent rally speech in detroit. you know what? >> if you want donald trump to win, then say that. otherwise, i'm speaking. >> and outside last weekend's fundraiser in san francisco. the vice president offering this response. >> we need to get the hostages out. we need a hostage deal, and we need a ceasefire. and i can't stress that strongly enough. it needs to get done. the deal needs to get done, and it needs to get done now. >> we really want to see policy changes around israel, not just words, not just lip service. >> some of these activists say they are heading to chicago to take part in protest near the dnc, to send democrats and

kamala harris a message. >> we're going to hit the streets, and we're going to be pushing on all of these messages and also tying the message of ceasefire, the message of an arms embargo to uh- other progressive policies that people are going to be there demanding from the democrats. >> activists say they'll keep marching until an arms embargo deal happens. in oakland. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> cornell, thanks so much. and the east bay. an early morning fire has left several people in need of a new place to live. the fire ignited around three this morning at the woodland hills apartment on west buchanan road, near railroad avenue in pittsburgh. there are 16 units in that building and four apartments were destroyed. some tenants credit their neighbors with alerting them to the fire. everyone was able to get out safely. >> she was like, mom, mom, mom, it's a fire! i was a really tired, it took a minute to come to. and then i smelled the smoke and then i saw the flames. we started kicking, banging on the

doors, trying to wake everyone up, it was the most scariest and traumatic thing i've ever experienced before in my life. >> glad they got out safe. firefighters say the building did not have a sprinkler system and was not required to. due to the year it was built, it's not yet known what sparked this fire. three people died in a crash on interstate 8-80 in fremont this morning. initial chp reports say the car caught fire. the accident was reported just before six this morning on the northbound side at the warren avenue overcrossing. emergency crews arrived and determined that a single vehicle with three people inside crashed into a concrete barrier. chp says the cause of the crash is under investigation. new details about a deadly mass shooting in the city of oakland. two people died after a total of four people were shot following an argument saturday morning. our media partner, the bay area news group, reports a 27 year old man

and 35 year old woman were killed. two other women were wounded and are expected to recover. the gunman is still out there. a reward of up to $30,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. a rally is calling for justice for victims of violence and an end to crime in oakland. community leaders spoke on the steps of city hall, calling attention to crime in the city and blaming the city's leadership. we need to come together sooner or later because it's going to be us that's going to save us. >> it's going to be us. it's going to bring our communities back together. it's going to be us. and while we're being divided each and every day, it's still going to be us. >> the group is calling on mayor shengtao and city council members to step down. a rally yesterday in oakland featured people on the other side. they say the recall efforts are being driven by people with outside money interests. there's now a suicide net along the golden gate bridge. but is it saving lives? construction of the net

to hospitalized children when they need it most. because happiness matters. nets below the golden gate bridge. now bridge authorities say the nets are working and saving lives. our media partner, the san francisco standard, reports four people died this year by jumping off the bridge. that's about 20% of the annual average for the state. the $200 million barrier sits 20ft below the bridge and extends 20ft out. it stretches across the entire bridge. an unusual rescue for crews in san francisco, who had to pull a man from the inside of a sewage pipe. it all started around 4:00 this morning. someone called the fire department saying he heard screaming near a manhole cover on the great highway near vincent street. rescuers say the

man crawled into the sewer from the beach, made his way along the inside of a pipe 20ft below the street, and then got stuck. crews had to wait for an osha permit before entering the pipe. they were able to free the man who they say was seriously hurt. something went really wrong during a music festival. see for yourself. a ferris wheel turned into a partial ring of fire, while the rapper, performing at the time was told not to stop the show and taking a live look outside. a bit gusty, and % coming our way, but not for long. we'll learn how hot it will get in the accuweather forecast. and it all came to an end today at the oakland coliseum. the last game ever played as what will forever be known as the bay bridge series. highli

music festival in germany caught fire at least 23 people were injured, four suffered burns and one person was injured in a fall. the operator of the ferris wheel says no one was sitting in the gondola where the fire started. good news to hear there. the cause of the fire is still being investigated. now

local media reported the festival continued after the fire, and the rapper, on stage at the time says he was told to keep performing to avoid mass panic, joined right now by spencer christian, who keeps performing even in stormy weather. and it's looking nice out. >> no need to panic about today's weather. here's what's going on jr. we've got a brisk onshore flow as you can see on this satellite radar composite image. so let's take a closer look. we've got wind gusts up to 36mph at sfo right now 26mph. over in hayward, all around the area, it is pretty breezy and it's warmer in most locations than it was at this time yesterday. despite that breeze, four degrees warmer in novato and oakland, five degrees warmer in concord and fairfield all around the area. we've had a breezy warm up. here's a look from mount tam down onto the bay under sunny skies. it's 66 degrees in san francisco right now, 73 at both oakland and hayward, mid to upper 70s at san jose and redwood city and half moon bay. 64 degrees. moving along, another view of blue sky

over the golden gate, where we often see fog this time of the day 77 degrees. right now, both santa rosa and napa petaluma 68. it's 80 at concord, 82 at fairfield and 77 at livermore. and a nice view looking westward from emeryville. these are the forecast headlines overnight. we'll see coastal clouds and drizzle developing. beginning of the week will be sunny or much warmer than the weekend has been, but later in the week we can expect a cooling trend during the overnight hours. look for lots of drizzle offshore. maybe a few patches of it may move onshore. we'll have lots of clouds near the coast and pushing locally across the bay during the early morning hours, but it won't last very long. it will burn back to the coastline early in the morning, giving way to mainly sunny skies. overnight, low temperatures will be generally in the low to mid 50s. a little chillier up in the north bay, 48 in santa rosa and cloverdale. highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, mid 70s around the bay. shoreline. mid to upper 80s in the warmest inland spots. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we'll see highs up to 90s inland on tuesday. a little bit of a tapering off of the high

temperatures on wednesday. but then later in the week a sharper cool down. it won't feel very warm at all. >> today marked the final game between the giants and the oakland a's. what has been known for so long as the bay bridge series. the battle of the bay rivalry really took off when the teams went head to head in the 1989 world series, known for the famous loma prieta earthquake. there's the coliseum as we know it. almost 33,000 fans on hand today. and check out this play that jp sears made in the fourth. no one can find the pop up where is it? oh my gosh. but sears finds it. and then doubles up tyler fitzgerald at first. hey now bottom of the sixth we go. miguel andujar singles home daz cameron. but jj bleday he gets thrown out. what a gun it was there at third one zero a's after six. top of the seventh. we go elliott ramos says i am a very strong man who can hit home runs 448ft. it was sears only

be when the sun is actually up. we'll have the details tonight at 11. a celebration of indian culture brought together thousands of people this weekend in fremont globe india day is wrapping up today with a parade and fair. the celebration has been part of fremont for 31 years. >> so we have a large and vibrant indian community in bay area. so on 15th august is the indian independence day. so we celebrate the indian independence day with a grand mela and parade every year. so the biggest thing in india culture is the music and dance. >> they brought in more than 250 local dance groups of various genres. food trucks brought a variety of cuisines from different regions of india, and there were 50 floats covering different aspects of the country and look at all the motorcycles and hot rods there. >> yes, and a great day for a parade.
