kamala harris history making acceptance of the democratic party's nomination. protests are expected to be a theme this wee, and they're already getting started. a large group rallied tonight, marching through chicago. some in the crowd are marching for reproductive and lgbtq rights. others are calling for an end to the israel-hamas war. more protests are set for tomorrow and throughout the week. today, in the bay area, pro-palestinian activists rallied to send a message to vice president kamala harris demanding she commit to an arms embargo on israel. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has details and reaction from oakland. harris harris, you will see. >> here is harris. you will see. palestine will be free. >> hundreds of pro-palestinian activists taking to thendla, hoe president kamala harris. >> she might have started here, but does that mean we're going to claim her? no. >> this group gathering on the eve of the democratic national

this weekend. a woman on the way to pick up her daughter from school, killed by a suspected drunk driver who wasn't allowed to be behind the wheel. friday's crash in santa rosa killed jessica avila munoz, a police officer with sonoma county. police say the driver who hit her had four prior dui arrests and a suspended license. tonight, i spoke with the president of munoz's union who met her when she started with the county. he told me munoz was dedicated to her daughter and the union is now trying to fundraise to make sure she's taken care of. >> she's traveling to pick her up from school at 145 in the afternoon, and that that's not something that i think anybody wants to experience. and we all travel around the city, usually around 145 in the afternoon, and we don't expect something like that to happen. >> the driver who hit munoz is now in jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. fundraisers for munoz's family have raised tens of thousands of

dollars. we have details about how you can help on abc seven news.com. turning our attention now to weather after a slightly warmer sunday. and we have a significant warm up coming this week. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian joins us with your accuweather forecast. >> okay j.r. you may have noticed in that live camera shot there no fog. clear skies over the bay area over those locations near the coast right now like san francisco. that may not last long though. during the overnight hours, we expect some coastal clouds to develop. but even with that. here's your day planner for tomorrow. 7:00 tomorrow morning, a few coastal clouds, possibly some spotty drizzle, but by noon, notice it's going to be mostly sunny. temperatures in the upper 70s inland up to about 70 around the bay shoreline. upper 50s on the coast by 4 p.m. sunny and mild to warm. highs in the upper 80s inland. upper 70s 70s around the bay shoreline. about 62 on the coast, and as we get into the evening hours, 7 p.m, we'll see those coastal clouds developing again as they often do.

temperatures dropping by about ten degrees or so, both inland and around the bay. from their high. around 4 p.m. i'll have a look at the big warm up coming our way. it won't last long, but you might like it in my accuweather forecast in a few minutes. j.r. >> spencer, thanks so much. looking forward to that happening tomorrow. a big day for san francisco families as the bay area's largest school district goes back to school. the first day for san francisco unified of course, brings excitement for families, but it's coming at a challenging time for covid. with the summer surge we just can't shake. abc seven news reporter tara campbell asked a health expert about keeping the whole family healthy. as kids go back to class. >> a new wave of covid 19 is hitting california and the bay area is no exception. >> we have a lot of covid in the wastewater as high as 2022. in the summer, and higher than last year. >> cases of covid climbing as kids head back to school. >> there's a lot of covid that's potentially in the schools in the classrooms.

>> and while each school district has its own covid protocols, the experts say in general, kids with covid can go back to school if they're, 24 hours out and have no fevers and are getting better, but that go ahead to go back comes with a caveat. >> however, it's going to be really important for kids to wear a mask for five days at least, you know, if they're going back to school. >> meanwhile, the parents we spoke with don't seem too concerned. >> hopefully it doesn't get worse. >> i'm not concerned about covid any more than i am concerned about any othere. >> hopefully we'll get over this hump of the summer. we'll have a lull. but the winter is what i'm really worried about. >> the fda is expected to sign off on updated covid 19 vaccines as early as this week, with both pfizer and moderna saying their vaccines should be available just days after get the covid shot.

>> with the flu shot, every kid at six months and over is eligible, so i think it's really important to try to protect them so you can protect the household and to protect loved ones who may be more vulnerable. >> tara campbell, abc seven news with back to school comes a lot of uncertainty for the san francisco unified school district, facing layoffs and school closures. >> state financial advisers are now managing the district's money and hiring decisions. the san francisco examiner reports the district is now in a hiring freeze. the state advisers told the school board this week they can hire for essential staff needed to keep a school running, but that's it. the district is facing a financial crisis, driven in part by declining enrollment. next month, fsa usd is expected to share a list of schools that will eventually close, trying to close funding gaps. book lovers are bringing hope in a dark chapter for one

their original location. we are following the story of an unprecedented loss in the south bay. this week. neighbors will honor a san jose community service officer. the first in the department's history to be killed in the line of duty. a suspected dui driver hit and killed cso long pham on august third. he was directing traffic at an accident scene when the driver hit pham's patrol car, sending it flying into pham and another cso. the other officer was seriously injured. there will be a vigil in pham's honor this thursday at san jose's vietnamese heritage garden. several families in the east bay need a new place to live after a bad fire. this morning, the fire ignited around 3 a.m. at the woodland hills apartments on west buchanan road. that's near railroad avenue in pittsburg. there are 16 units in the building and four apartments were destroyed. some tenants credit their neighbors with alerting them to the fire. you see, the flames here? everyone

was able to get out safely. >> she was like, mom, mom, mom, it's a fire. i was a really tired. it took a minute to come to. and then i smelled the smoke. and then i saw the flames. we started kicking, banging on the doors, trying to wake everyone up. it was the most scariest and traumatic thing i've ever experienced before in my life. >> wow. >> great news that they were able to get out. firefighters say the building did not have a sprinkler system and was not required to due to the year it was built. investigators are looking into what sparked this fire. a bay area startup is facing major layoffs after the fda rejected its plan to use psychedelics to help with ptsd. the company, listos, pushed for the use of mdma for therapeutic use. the fda rejected the psychedelic assisted treatment for ptsd. for now, citing a need for more studies. it's a major setback for the san jose based

company now laying off 75% of its staff. the ceo says conducting a new study would take several years. an unusual rescue for crews in san francisco today. a beachgoer ended up trapped inside a sewage pipe, and it took nearly three dozen firefighters an hour and a half to get him out. firefighters say they got a call from someone who heard screaming near a manhole cover on the great highway near vicente street. rescuers say the man crawled into the sewer from the beach, made his way along the inside of a pipe 20ft below street level, and then got stuck. crews had to wait for an osha permit before entering the pipe. they were able to free the man who they say was seriously hurt. it's the only private island in the bay, and now it belongs to a mystery buyer. red rock island next to the richmond-san rafael bridge has been sold. it went on the market last year for $25 million. it doesn't have water, power or

wi-fi, and the building on it is questionable. but the listing agent tells us it had interest from around the world. couldn't share the buyer or the sale price because of an nda or nda. that is spencer christian here with weather. spencer, was it you who bought that island? it was not. it was not. >> but i'm curious to know how much it sold for. i know we may not find out, but yes, you can't do all that stuff. >> but hopefully you got some spectacular views. oh, yeah. >> great views and good viewing weather because there's no fog in the way. right now. here's a look at what's happening with the atmospherics of our current weather pattern. you can see that area of low pressure off the pacific northwest coastline there. and it's counterclockwise. circulation has been giving us a steady flow of onshore winds, which will eventually produce a little bit of a marine layer during the overnight hours. but right now, skies are mainly clear around the bay area, and it's not nearly so breezy as it was in the early evening hours right now. most locations have wind speeds under ten miles per hour.

the exception being oakland and sfo. so on we go to the 24 hour temperature change. most locations are also a few degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. despite the fact that we are going into a brief warming trend. here's a clear view from mount tam looking down into the bay. notice the absence of fog. 59 degrees in san francisco. right now we have low to mid 60s at oakland, hayward, san jose, 63 at redwood city and 59 at half moon bay. absence of fog at the golden gate as well. that may change in the next three, 4 or 5 hours or so. it's 59 degrees, right now at both santa rosa and napa, 54 at petaluma and low to mid 60s at fairfield, concord and livermore, and a clear view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco. and these are our forecast headlines. so overnight there will be some coastal clouds developing along with some drizzle mainly offshore. but some of it may move over land areas beginning and beginning of the week it will be sunnier and much warmer. that will be tomorrow and tuesday, but later in the week a cooling trend begins, so that warming trend will be short lived. here's our forecast animation starting at midnight.

notice during the overnight hours just before the morning commute begins. in fact, we'll see lots of patches of drizzle offshore and a little bit of a marine layer forming and pushing locally across the bay. that will not last very long during the morning hours, because the sun will burn it away very quickly, giving us a warmer day than we had today. overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s. the exception up in the north bay, where lows will drop into the upper 40s at cloverdale and santa rosa. so a little bit cooler up there. highs tomorrow 63 at half moon bay, 68 in san francisco across the bay in oakland 73 degrees. some locations around the bay shoreline tomorrow will warm up into the upper 70s up in the north bay. it will be fairly mild with highs of 86 at santa rosa, 79 at napa. the inland east bay will be our warmest region with highs there in the mid to upper 80s, up to about 88 and concord 89. fairfield 87 at antioch and down to the south, bay 80 at san jose, 86 at morgan hill. here's the accuweather seven day forecast after upper 80s inland. tomorrow we'll see.
