couple of days. here's our view from our east bay hills camera. you can see just a little bit of fog in areas. we do have patchy cloud cover. not widespread when it comes to our marine layer and off on the horizon. a full moon is setting on the western horizon out there. we'll take a look at temperatures right now. and you will find numbers mainly in the mid 50s to the low 60s. good morning, san mateo. we're at 56. 58 in cupertino. 55. that current number in fremont. but the wider picture shows you in our valleys and parts of the north bay. sonoma county specifically. look at those numbers on the chilly side. starting out in the 40s. so the forecast today inland, it is bright. it is very comfortable. temperatures pretty close to average for this time of the year. we'll get you into the mid and upper 80s later on today around the bay shoreline. very limited fog out there. we'll see lots of sunshine this morning leading to a bright afternoon. and those daytime highs very pleasant in the mid 70s along the coast. we do have that cloud cover right now, but there are two. will find a partly cloudy day, brighter skies in the afternoon and highs in the mid 60s. let's check in with sue and

see those drive times this morning. >> good morning. we've got a pretty dramatic sky out there at the richmond san rafael bridge and traffic is flowing nicely across the span. so you've got about an eight minute drive from richmond across the span and into san rafael. not bad at all. and we are looking at some slowing up and over the altamont pass. very typical for this time of the day. and we do have an accident. unfortunately it's coming into san jose north 101 before highway 85. a couple of lanes are blocked and you will find yourself on the brake speeds. ten miles or less approaching this scene. and it is starting to back up rather dramatically. we'll be back with more on this and the rest of your commute this monday morning in just a few minutes. all right. thank you. sue. >> this morning, the stage is set for the democratic national convention. this is a live look there. now, events officially get underway in chicago today. vice president harris arrived overnight following a campaign bus tour across pennsylvania. it's a swing state and could decide november's election.

>> the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us. that's what this campaign is about. yes, it is about winning. and we will win and we will win. >> both vp harris and former president donald trump have been focused on winning pennsylvania. trump returns to the state today after just being there on saturday. >> i want to cut taxes on americans while putting tariffs on china and foreign countries to bring our jobs back home to pennsylvania, and to take in billions and billions of dollar. >> back live to chicago abc seven. there we go. abc seven news anchor julian glover is there this morning, and he has a look at what we can expect in the week ahead. >> hey there, amanda and reggie. good morning here from the united center. one of the two sites that will be playing host to the democratic national convention over the course of the next four days. security understandably tight. more than 2500 chicago police officers and hundreds of secret service members all here to protect this

very site. the reason more than 50,000 people are expected to be here for the democratic national convention, including some 4000 delegates, the largest contingent of delegates coming from the state of california and many of them from the bay area, will be speaking with them throughout the week. here but more than anything, of course, this is a celebration of the bay area's very own vice president, kamala harris, as she makes the case for why she should be the next president of the united states, instead of another four years of former president donald trump. no sightings of vice president kamala harris or her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, just yet. they are currently on a bus tour across the state of pennsylvania. she will be here later today, as we expect to hear from the big headlining speakers. we'll be hearing from former secretary of state hillary clinton. of course, the 2016 democratic presidential nominee, along with first lady doctor jill biden president joe biden, who will be making his case for why his vice president should be the next president of the united states. a lot to cover. we'll have it

all here on abc seven news for now, reporting outside of the united center, i'm julian glover, abc seven news. >> and you can catch julian's coverage from chicago all week long here on abc seven news. and each night, abc news will have special live coverage of the democratic national convention tonight and tomorrow from 7 to 8 p.m. wednesday and thursday. it's from 6 to 8 p.m. of course, you can find it wherever you watch abc seven while the convention is going on in chicago, former president donald trump will be on the campaign trail visiting several battleground states. >> the trump campaign announced a series of what they call messaging events. they'll be held at smaller venues and will focus on 1 or 2 policy issues today, former president trump will be in pennsylvania to speak about the economy. he's expected to also visit michigan, arizona and north carolina. polling continues to capture the shakeup in the landscape of the race. the latest abc news ipsos poll shows harris leading former president donald trump by five points overall. however trump

has the upper hand on two top issues the economy and inflation. he also leads on immigration. >> we're tracking developing news in san jose. a woman was hit and killed in a car crash there. it happened around 1030 last night at snell avenue and capitol expressway. police say the woman was rushed to the hospital where she later died. it's the city's 32nd fatal crash of the year in the north bay. >> a heartbreaking story shocking the community over the weekend, a woman on the way to pick up her daughter from school, killed by a suspected drunk driver who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel. friday's crash in santa rosa killed jessica avila munoz, a police officer with sonoma county. police say the driver who hit her had four prior dui arrests and a suspended license. we spoke to the president of munoz's union who met her when she started with the county, and he says munoz was dedicated to her daughter, and the union is now trying to raise funds to make sure that she's taken care of. >> she's traveling to pick her up from school at 145 in the

afternoon, and that that's not something that i think anybody wants to experience. and we all travel around the city, usually around 145 in the afternoon, and we don't expect something like that to happen. >> the driver who hit munoz is now in jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. fundraisers for munoz's family have raised tens of thousands of dollars. if you're interested in contributing, just go to our website, abc seven news.com. >> today is the start of classes for tens of thousands of san francisco students and their teachers. and this year could be a year of change and transition for many of them. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live from the cow hollow neighborhood. and, gloria, some of these schools may close. reporter. >> yes, amanda, as students and staff return to school today, they're also dealing with about 120 teacher vacancies. and the san francisco examiner is now reporting that the district is in a hiring freeze so they can hire for essential staff needed to keep a school running. but

that's it. and also due to declining enrollment. superintendent matt wayne says the district is planning to close a number of their schools to better realign their resources. this would take effect next school year. while they haven't said how many the recommended list of schools will be released by september 18th. >> part of this process will be changing our enrollment policy to also establish more neighborhood schools, and we're making sure that families will have a choice near where they live to send their students to schools and ultimately, it will mean more resources at each school by having fewer schools that their student will be able to take advantage of. >> reporter and the executive director of the nonprofit parents for public schools of san francisco says that historically, when there are school closures, research shows there's a displacement of students of color. the superintendent says they are making sure as they develop their plan, they don't disproportionately impact any one community. the school board is expected to vote on the recommended list of school closures by december 10th, and

all students will be getting a free meal this school year. that's thanks to the organization california meals for all. there's also something new for parents this year. they can actually track their students absences. they can report them on a new app. it is called parent view. so that's a cool new app that parents can use this school year. again parent view. now let's go and get a check of your forecast with drew on this first day of school. good morning drew. >> hey good morning gloria. let's look at that school forecast for s.f. unified. as they go back, the western half of the city, the outer richmond, the outer sunset. we're dealing with fog, some mist and drizzle downtown. we have some drier conditions. it's a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning. temperatures in the mid 50s right now will go into the low 60s. by about 10 a.m. we'll take you to walnut creek this morning where we have clear skies out there. current conditions showing it's 59 right now in walnut creek. the wind at 13mph with high humidity. so looking at highs versus average today we're pretty much where we should be for this time of the

wrapped in plastic and signs reading do not drink the water. the reason lead has been detected in the water at nearly two dozen schools across oakland unified, parents and staff were warned about the issue in a letter from the district last

week. according to a water testing report obtained by abc seven news, the issue was discovered in april. >> students have been going to that school and summer school included for this whole time, drinking that water, which is completely unacceptable and infuriating, usd board president sam davis says communication needs to be better. >> he says the district has been aggressive about testing water since 2017 and is now taking steps to fix the problem. >> we need to make sure that there's testing available for families to find out if they were exposed to lead, and we need to invest in remediating the issue. >> the district says water filters and pipes will be installed and fixtures will be retested to comply with safety standards. teachers are calling on the community for help to provide bottled water to school sites. new overnight, the u.s. and south korea kicked off an annual large-scale exercise. south korean officials say this

year's drills are focused on readiness against threats from north korea, like missiles, gps jamming, and cyber attacks. these drills will continue through august 29th. and breaking overnight, a mass shooting in baltimore has left one person dead and seven others hurt. police say there was a gathering last night at and at some point, multiple people opened fire. the ages of the victims range from 22 to 45, and some people are in critical condition. officers recovered multiple weapons at the scene, and detectives are looking through what they're calling an expansive scene to determine what happened. >> this morning, the u.s. is starting to see the possible effects of a work stoppage by canada's two biggest railroad companies. both companies have stopped taking certain shipments of hazardous materials and refrigerated products. they connect to key u.s. rail and shipping hubs like chicago, new orleans, minneapolis and memphis. they're threatening to lock out union workers if deals on new contracts are reached. one of the companies says there

a new concert series kicked off in the park just one week after outside lands. system of a down

and deftones headlined this inaugural event. the one day sold out concert drew 50,000 fans. organizers say 90% of the audience is from outside of san francisco. >> that means hotel rooms, restaurants, ubers, retail taxes, all of that. >> it's an extension of what we did on outside lands. it's also a different crowd. we're excited that it's in the main polo fields in which we've been here for several years, and we're just really blessed and excited to be on the first time. >> organizers hope next year's event is bigger, possibly with two or even three days of the weekend. after outside lands. new at six. a flight from san francisco to jackson hole, wyoming, had to divert to salt lake city last week. the issue was very unusual. the pilot wasn't allowed to land in jackson hole, so here's a live picture of sfo to tell you the story. jackson hole airport has special qualifications to take off and land due to the mountainous terrain. passengers in the skywest flight posted on

excess of about 15mph along the coast. we have cloud cover right now, but it will be a bright afternoon. mostly sunny here and highs in the mid 60s. let's check in with sue and see those drive times this morning. >> all right. we are checking the drive on 880 past the coliseum. >> it's moving well. yesterday we were out there for the last bay bridge series. it was bittersweet. it was very sad. but today, traffic is moving great and the parking lots are all empty. no problems here, but here we go. bay bridge backup had metering lights turned on at about 537, and now you are stacked up beyond the overcrossing. and once you get through the metering lights, you will find some slow traffic as you approach the tunnel, you will be on the brakes again over towards the san francisco side. so expect a bit of a delay here at least ten minutes to get to the metering lights. you can see all that slow traffic there on the bay bridge and we still have this accident. it is in the south bay, not one but two accidents. north 101 before 85,

district is now in a hiring freeze. they can hire for essential staff needed to keep a school running, but that's it. but today, there is still excitement about the first day, as the district will welcome back 50,000 students to schools. >> i'm excited to come back to a district that is so focused on improving student outcomes. we have our goals for third grade literacy, eighth grade math, and college and career readiness, and we've really made progress towards those goals. >> and if you have kids at sfusd, there are a couple things you can keep in mind this year if your children need to take public transit, muni will be running its free fare program again. students under 19 can ride for free and in the afternoons, busses will meet students at some of the city's biggest middle and high schools. and if your kids are having a hard time adjusting to going back to school, the district has a couple of tips to make things a little bit easier. keep a simple routine. also, have a list of things that your kids
