train triggered frantic evacuations and a shutdown in oakland. tonight, trains are starting to move again, but major delays are still making for a challenging commute. >> this all started as a train was traveling between the 19th street and macarthur stations. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live at macarthur bart station. hearing from passengers who were on board when the smoke started. leslie. sounds like it was pretty scary. >> harrowing ordeal for passengers who were in a train car that filled with smoke and found themselves having to jump out of it. let's start off, though, first by taking a look at sky seven. this incident happened around 230 today. this afternoon. bart said an eastbound train started filling with smoke just short of the macarthur station, saying there was an equipment problem on the train. oakland fire responded to a two alarm fire incident, but it ended up not being a fire. terrified passengers were evacuated, though, and bart says

there were no reports of injuries. all bart lines were stopped for more than an hour, so an absolute mess for travel >> this one i lost, i failed. >> abc seven news. they smelled smoke on the train long before it was still in the transbay tube, and they heard a series of pops before the train came to an abrupt stop. >> the train, just all of a sudden stopped, but there was smoke in there. and then it was just a little smoke at first. and then this train started to fill up with more smoke. >> so yeah, it was scary. >> it was. it was pretty scary. we stood around waiting to hear the conductor or the train operator tell us what to do. and so we all stood for a minute. and then that's when we heard more popping and more smoke. so i decided to go ahead and pull it. i had waited long enough.

>> so she says she just opened the door and jumped onto the gravel below the train car landing on her knees. she said she saw many passengers having trouble with the jump, one man landing on his hands that were covered in blood. seniors struggled to get off, she said. it was awful. between the smoke, the pops and the jump emergency vehicles eventually left the scene. train service resumed just before 4:00. now the red line from richmond to millbrae was the last of the lines to resume service. all trains are operating now, according to bart normally, but they do stress they're still recovering and there are still major delays. they said they are in service recovery mode. delays could last for hours to come because of the backup, with all the trains and the system not running for more than an hour, in the end, bart says the piece of equipment that

caused the problem that caused the car to filled with smoke is called a train car collector chute. reporting live in the east bay. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> as we said, frightening and inconvenient. leslie, thanks very much. >> all right. good evening. i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us here in the north bay. now, the sonoma county law enforcement community is mourning one of their own. >> jessica avila munoz was a juvenile correctional counselor. she was off duty on friday, driving to pick up her daughter at school when she was killed by a suspected drunk driver who had several previous dui arrests. >> today, abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with her friends and coworkers. >> it's a gut punch. it's something that will carry with us the rest of our careers. >> chief probation officer vanessa fuchs says her staff at sonoma county juvenile hall is mourning the death of fellow correctional counselor, 31 year old jessica avila munoz. >> i got the call from the santa rosa police chief and it took my breath away. >> on friday, jessica was headed

to pick her 13 year old daughter up at school in santa rosa when she was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. she was just beginning her career at juvenile hall, sworn in last october and thrilled to be a part of the team. >> she was very enthusiastic about working, very happy and proud to be a juvenile correctional counselor. >> the facilities break room is now filled with flowers and cards, remembering jessica. >> she's very excited to work here. she had a lot of compassion for the residents here. >> trevor vanetti was jessica's friend and coworker. he says there's only one thing she loved more than doing her job. >> she loved her daughter more than anything and was her number one priority. and i myself, and i know our department will do anything that we can to assist her with anything that she needs. >> sonoma county superior court records show the 68 year old suspect has at least four prior misdemeanor convictions for driving under the influence, dating back to 1987. police say he was driving illegally on a

suspended driver's license. >> anyone who is impaired by alcohol or drugs should never be behind the wheel, but especially when you've already been previously arrested. >> my understanding is they just that jessica and her sister just moved into a new house on the first. she hasn't even finished packing the boxes yet. >> the sonoma county law enforcement association says an online fundraiser is happening to support her family, while others across the region cope with an up and coming officer gone too soon. >> i just want to focus on jessica and telling her story and focus on supporting our staff that are going through a very challenging time in santa rosa. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> police in san jose are also investigating a deadly day on the roads. two people died in separate crashes yesterday. first, police say a driver hit and killed a cyclist who veered into the wrong lanes on jackson avenue near bambi lane, just off 680. this happened about 915 yesterday morning. then last

night, police say another driver hit and killed a woman walking in the crosswalk at snell avenue and capitol expressway. police say the driver had the green light this makes 33 fatal crashes in san jose so far this year, including the deaths of a community service officer and an 11 year old boy. just this month. >> one is too many. it's devastating that we've already had two yesterday and more earlier this month. we want to obviously see these numbers go down and we don't want to see another tragic loss and we don't want more families to mourn. and so this is something we need to work together on. >> police are still investigating the causes of both crashes. they say both drivers stayed on the scene. and alcohol or drugs are not a factor in either case. >> right now, the democratic national convention is underway in chicago. >> here's a live look where ohio congresswoman joyce beatty is just wrapping up. we're also expecting michigan senator mallory mcmorrow to speak, followed by florida congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz and california senator

laphonza butler. >> the list of speakers is long. so far, the theme has been to pay tribute to black women, especially kamala harris. harris is the first black woman to be a major party's nominee for president. chicago's mayor, brandon johnson, spoke about what that means to someone like his daughter. >> i know that my daughter braden will see not only a reflection of herself in the white house, but she will experience the deepest part of american values. >> there was a pause between speeches to honor the reverend jesse jackson, who went on stage in a wheelchair and did not speak, but waved to the crowd. they were excited to see him. jackson had some of the most electrifying speeches in democratic convention history over the decades. later tonight, delegates will hear from president joe biden, who will officially hand over the future of the party to his vice president, kamala harris. now, in addition to all of the excitement, and there has been a great deal of that, there have

also been protests over the very latest. >> let's go to abc seven news reporter julian glover, who is in chicago and joins us live tonight. hi, julian. >> hey there. good evening, dan and ama. we are live here inside of the united center where the dnc is happening. and as you can hear by the applause happening right now, the energy is absolutely electric. just moments ago, we heard chants of union. yes, union. yes. as yet another union leader took the stage. we'll step out of the way here and you can see people still trying to make their way to their seats. it's kind of like when you arrive to a movie, when the credits or not the credits. but the previews are rolling, right? people shuffling around trying to get their seats. that's all because the first night of the dnc has an action packed lineup. former secretary of state hillary clinton, first lady jill biden and of course, president joe biden himself. this will be a celebration of the president's legacy. it has been a busy day of protest and policy here in chicago. first, we'll get to the protest outside of the united center, thousands of pro-palestinian protesters gathered to make their voices

heard. we're told the crowd size only growing by the minute. dozens of them actually made their way into the hardened security perimeter just outside of the united center. but we're told chicago police were able to subdue the situation, many of them holding signs calling for free palestine and suggesting vp harris is enabling genocide in gaza. last night, a demonstrator actually managed to jump onto the stage at the dnc. welcome party in chicago to denounce president biden's israel policy about 15 minutes ago. from where we are 15 minutes away at the mccormick center, the second site of the dnc, where caucuses and council meetings happen that form the democratic party platform, california elected leaders expressed hope and optimism for the party's future. another person expressing optimism. someone who knows the vice president very well her childhood friend stacy johnson. batista. here's what she shared with me about what it means to support her. dear friend. now at the top of the democratic ticket, we are here. >> we are here. i mean, i'm already thinking about it

getting teared up. i really don't know. all i know is i just want to grab her hands and just let her know. like i am with you all the way to the end. >> again, we will be hearing from former secretary of state and 2016 democratic party nominee, former first lady hillary clinton will also be hearing from first lady jill biden as she applauds her husband. and you're looking at video here of president joe biden earlier today, walking through the united center. and he told reporters he is, in fac, ready to pass the torch. we're back here live inside of the united center right now again, where you can hear the cheers, applause and excitement. and that is exactly what tonight is all about. the president passing the torch to his vice president, kamala harris, and turning the party over as well. the president being a bit tight lipped about exactly what his message will be to the party and to the country tonight. we'll have to all tune in and watch that happening right here in

primetime for now, live inside of the united center. now i'm julian glover, abc seven news. >> all right, lots of action tonight. >> thank you julian, for sure. >> and you can watch julian's coverage from chicago all week long right here on abc seven news. and each night abc news will have special live coverage of the democratic national convention tonight and tomorrow from seven until 8 p.m, wednesday and thursday from six until 8 p.m. >> a car burglary suspect is facing federal charges for breaking into an fbi truck in san francisco, the mercury news reports. gregory acosta alvarez is accused of stealing thousands of dollars in equipment from an agent's vehicle back on august seventh, including a gas launching gun and a ballistics vest. the break-in was captured on security cameras. investigators say alvarez can be seen getting on a bicycle and riding away from the crime scene. they found him at a hotel nearby, but not some of the stolen items. authorities say alvarez claimed he traded those items for $20 worth of methamphetamine. >> fire investigators in san

francisco say they cannot figure out what sparked a fire at a home near alamo square that forced out a dog walker and his family. terry williams parents ended up in the hospital after the fire back in may. the incident report from the fire department shows investigators could not pin down where or how the fire started. it was a brutal blow for the family. police are still investigating a number of racist packages found at williams door spring door this spring. i should say they have not made any arrests in the city's soma neighborhood, a group of residents has been raising the alarm for weeks. >> they can't sleep because of random honking between waymo's autonomous cars in a parking lot during the overnight hours. now, today, officials with waymo agreed to join a live stream with the neighbors to explain the honking. abc seven news reporter louis pena is here now with the latest from that meeting. hi, louis. >> hi, emma. this is the latest chapter in a very san francisco story. first, waymo issued a statement about what was happening. then they deployed

two changes to their software that stopped the honking for a while. they even bought the residents ice cream to try and make things right. and today they spoke directly to that community. after multiple sleepless nights, san francisco resident sophia tong took matters into her own hands. it started with posting a video and live stream of waymo vehicles honking at each other at 4 a.m. in the parking lot, directly below her building. hope videos of the consistent honking went viral, and many, like sophia, kept documenting it. >> 2 a.m. or 5 a.m. or so is the cars would come back. i guess, or go to charge and they would get congested in the lot and start honking as the noise kept increasing, so did the views and attention to this issue. >> so much so that waymo notice. >> i didn't really expect anything to come from it, but clearly something has. >> waymo agreed to explain to sophia, her neighbors, and everyone else invested in this why their vehicles were acting

this way, all via the same live stream that brought attention to it online. >> i'm also taking questions from people on reddit. my neighbors have greatly contributed to this entire effort, with hundreds watching waymo's director of product and operations explained why this happened. >> we came up with a feature to honk and get the attention of other road users. and obviously you can, you know, you can see how that makes sense on public roads where we didn't, you know, where it had this unintended effect was in these parking lots, uc berkeley av researcher steve shladover provides technical advice to the dmv on their work overseeing av activity. >> we should expect the technology is still in its childhood. it's gradually maturing, it's not yet fully mature, and it will be improving over the years. >> emily chang lives on the other side of the building, so the noise hasn't kept her up, but she was proud of how her

of the ten campus system issued reinforcements to protest policies. >> it comes in response to a tumultuous year of campus protests. the changes now include no more encampments or masking to conceal your identity. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland explains why some say these changes are untenable. >> the fall semester starts this week at uc berkeley and for uc president michael drake, it's been a summer of reflection. he said in a letter on monday. campus leaders spent recent months reviewing the events of the past year, which involved pro-palestinian protests taking over uc campuses. some like this demonstration at ucla, devolving into violence. now the uc system wants to strengthen and clarify policies and procedures. drake is vowing to enforce bans on campus encampments and identity concealing masks, but said in his letter our ultimate goal is for all of our community members to feel supported in their ability to express themselves. uc berkeley's chancellor echoed

his support in a video message sent to all students. >> we will also continue to respond in a quick and concerted manner to violence to violations of laws, and to words or deeds that rise to the level of harassment and or discrimination. behavior of that sort will not be tolerated. >> some are against the restrictions. >> it is an untenable policy. it shows the university's hostility to free speech. >> this comes as the brandeis center sues uc berkeley over its handling of protests last year, calling the campus a hotbed of anti-jewish hostility and harassment, saying that we trust neither the brandeis center nor the uc administration to protect our rights. >> now, those pro-palestinian student protesters and their allies want to join the lawsuit to defend themselves, filing a motion monday morning. we are caught between two parties who are their only true dispute is about how to suppress palestinians in the most efficient way and the most pr friendly way. the university,

to start, just look at these live pictures from our towercameras right now we have sunshine from coast to inland, and as we take a look at what's happening, we are looking at live doppler seven. there's an area of low pressure off the pacific northwest coast that is going to be a big factor in our forecast later on this week, when it will drive those

temperatures down and bring in the possibility of some drizzle and showers. but right now, clear skies locally here, your temperatures inland areas in the east bay and the 80s we have 60s near the coast. really just comfortable weather, a typical sea breeze gusting to 33 at sfo. now tonight if you are stepping out it is going to be breezy primarily near the coast and around the bay shoreline. so a good idea to just pack on those extra layers. here's a look at the headlines as we look at a beautiful view from mount tam tomorrow. sunshine a warmer day wednesday through friday. breezy and cooler weather and friday is going to be damp with below average conditions. we're expecting drizzle and a slight possibility of a few showers as we go hour by hour this evening. 80s inland 60s coast side. not a lot of fog forming, but it will be around parts of the coast later on this evening and a little bit near the bay shoreline tomorrow morning to start the day tomorrow afternoon we're going to see those temperatures rise up into the 90s for our warmest inland valleys. your morning numbers

will start off in the 50s and 60s tomorrow afternoon. you are looking at high temperatures that will be about the same as where they should be for this time of year, or a little bit warmer. so low 90s concord, antioch, santa rosa along the coast, half moon bay 67 and we'll see plenty of sun wednesday. the temperatures begin to come down, but you still have the warmth inland. look what happens on thursday. i mean, we're below average inland only in the 70s and 80s. and by friday, all of you are going to drop well below average with 60s and 70s as that trough just off the pacific northwest coast comes in and it will bring in the possibility of some drizzle or a few light showers. the best possibility of some showers will be up in the northern part of our viewing area, so just keep that in mind as you make your plans. the accuweather seven day forecast does feature warmth tomorrow mid 60s to mid 90s. and then the cooling begins wednesday. it continues right on through friday when temperatures bottom out, clouds damp, roadways show up, and then we turn things around in time for
