60s right now around the bay shoreline. good morning. cupertino 59. 55 in san mateo. we're at 54 currently in castro valley. we widen out the picture mainly in the 60s, away from the coast, from concord to fairfield, brentwood, cloverdale, right now coming in at 60 degrees. so today, not only the warmest day of the week, but we're back into the 90s inland today, all sunshine throughout the day today, 91, in a lot of spots. and our hottest cities, in fact, a few degrees above average for this time of the year. no fog reported around the bay shoreline this morning. that means lots of sunshine once that sun is up here around 630. upper 70s. lower 80s with full sunshine and even along the coast will be fantastic day along our coast. sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60s. let's check in with sue. see what's out there. >> all right. beautiful day. and right now we are looking at pretty good traffic on the east shore freeway. you see a lot of gaps in those headlights. that means we're moving at the limit. no issues here. if you're headed towards the bay bridge toll plaza, it's looking good as well. and as drew said, no fog at the golden gate bridge. you have a little bit of

construction in the northbound direction this morning, but that should be picked up rather shortly. our one problem spot is way out in the central valley, 205 westbound. we have had a sig alert out there since 1030 last night. only one lane getting by. i expect that to be opened rather quickly. it's 205 just west of i-5. guys. >> sue. thank you this morning. forward progress has been made. has stopped, i should say, on a fire in the foothills of east san jose. this started as three spot fires around 815 last night in the area of quimby road. and the steep terrain is proving to be pretty challenging. firefighters say those three fires totaled 33 acres and containment is only at 15%. crews from cal fire san jose fire and santa clara county fire are battling the flames. we don't know if any structures are threatened and it's unclear if any residents were evacuated. >> happening tonight, there's going to be a listening session for parents to hear from oakland unified about a troubling situation with drinking water at many schools. abc seven news

reporter gloria rodriguez is tracking the situation and gloria officials are dealing with dangerous levels of lead. what have they told parents so far? well, amanda, parents were told to take an extra water bottle for their children because some of the water running through the pipes is not safe to drink. >> but some parents are upset that the district is just now taking action. yesterday we saw a portable water jug on the playground of hillcrest elementary. district officials say lead was found in 22 usc campuses. the district published results of lead testing done at each campus and each report shows the testing was done earlier this year before the new school year started. andrea ventura with clean water action says a state or federal government should step in. >> we totally understand the economic burden this puts on schools, and so we have actually called on the state board to take the lead issues more seriously. >> in a statement, usc said we are fixing any outlet we find

that shows lead levels exceeding the district's limit of five ppb to ensure that our students and staff are not exposed to elevated levels of lead when at school from faucets or fountainheads. environmental experts say that lead is a dangerous metal that can cause significant neurological damage, especially for children. the hillcrest pta arranged a listening session with a usc district four board director, mike hutchinson, for this evening. that meeting is via zoom. it's at 6:30 p.m. and it's a q&a meeting, so parents can be heard and also ask questions live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thank you. >> gloria. tonight, governor newsom enters the spotlight at the democratic national convention. he'll lead california's delegation during the ceremonial roll call. the governor will be the one to put vice president harris officially over the delegate threshold needed to secure the presidential nomination. now, this is a gesture in name only, as harris actually got the votes virtually at the beginning of the month. but given the long

elected democratic officials, all focusing on the theme for the people. california well represented for night one. as for this legacy cementing night for president joe biden. and there was even the surprise vice president kamala harris surprised her party, making a quick appearance for night one of the democratic national convention. and i want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president, joe biden. the night was about cementing president biden's legacy, who just a month ago made the historic decision to end his run for reelection. california elected officials were well represented. california senator laphonza butler, showering her longtime friend and ally with praise. you see, kamala harris has always understood the assignment. >> no matter if she were the underdog, no matter the bullying or the name calling. she never doubted that our best was still

obliteration. she will obliterate factories like this. >> trump will campaign in detroit today. he and his running mate, ohio senator jd vance, will be hitting other battleground states all week long. we are counting down to election day. take a look at the clock on your screen. 77 days until the moment polls open on election day. of course, that's november 5th. >> tonight you have a chance to weigh in on public safety cameras and a high crime area in san francisco. the police department holding a community meeting to discuss four proposed locations in the bayview district. they would be along third street from kirkwood to quesada avenue. there are already two cameras in the mission district. tonight's meeting starts at 530 at the bayview district police station. san francisco police arrested 61 people during a sting operation targeting shoplifters for more than two months. officers worked with stores in the ingleside district to catch thieves who stole, who had stolen food,

clothes and other merchandise. several of those arrested had outstanding warrants. most were cited and released. officers say they will continue these sting operations to reduce retail theft. >> an option available on google maps for years is becoming an increasingly popular way for people to try and prevent burglaries. they're blurring out there homes on the street view of google maps. it helps to block anyone who might be casing neighborhoods ahead of time and using the internet as a tool. the idea is to give thieves less material to work with. by choosing to block the view of a home completely. >> what a great idea to harden your target, meaning to make your residents a little more anonymous so that people can't see what you have or what your house looks like. >> so here's how to do it yourself. find your home or business on google maps and click on report a problem on the lower right corner of the screen, and you can choose what you want. blurred. answer a few questions and then request google make the change.

robotaxis that just won't stop honking in san francisco's soma neighborhood. issued a statement about what was happening, explaining the software makes the driverless taxis honk when another car gets too close. then they deployed two software changes that stopped the honking for a while. but then it came back. and yesterday, our abc seven news team spoke with one neighbor who is now live streaming the lot. >> i can't believe this is happening to me. so i'm just going to set up a webcam in my window in a cereal box and like, you know, at least make the best of the situation. >> that's one way a waymo representative actually joined the live stream yesterday to discuss their efforts to fix the technology. and he said the honking gets the attention of people on the street, but had an unintended effect in the parking lot. he said a software fix is on the way, but it's not done

yet. >> there are new robots roaming along san francisco's market street. amazon unleashed these little black boxes on wheels. they actually don't do a whole lot. they're instead meant to advertise a new ai exhibit that launches tomorrow at amazon's offices nearby, featuring holographic communication and art making tools. amazon is having eight weeks of public events showcasing various ai projects. the exhibit is making appearances at cities around the world, from makeup keep on dancing. >> i'm fresh off her outside lands performance. >> chaperons 2023 album has hit number one on billboard's vinyl albums chart. >> this is the first time the rise and fall of a midwest princess reached that mark since its release last september. vinyl sales are up 203% compared to the previous week. outside lands organizers say she drew in 50,000 of the 75,000 people who

again. it is breezy this afternoon. those winds about 2020 five miles per hour. 70s for the coast. a nice day to be at stinson. lots of sunshine. 7390, in santa rosa, 85 in napa, 89 in san rafael in the east bay. it is sunny and it is warm. 78 in oakland, 80 in orinda, 81 in fremont and inland. today, this is the warmest day of the week. we're above average in the upper 80s to the mid 90s with sunny skies overnight. tonight we will see just a little bit of patchy fog along the coast. we're not expecting widespread cloud cover. overnight lows will be in the 50s now. tomorrow we start a cooling trend. it feels pleasant tomorrow afternoon. then you'll start to feel those below average temperatures by thursday. and then by friday. look at your afternoon highs well below average. basically, we're all in the 60s and in the 70s. the reason why low pressure will dive down from the pacific northwest. and by friday it's sitting on top of northern california that is dragging in the cooler air. but you do notice we will track the chance

closer to their merger. the justice department has chosen not to challenge the deal. it still needs approval from the transportation department. >> this is going to be really weird, but two years ago at burning man, i lost my airpods and i was curious if by any chance you might know where the airpods are or if you've had anyone from denver recently arrive at your house. and she said, ha, it's my son. >> they went to burning man and back. one man's quest to track his lost airpods brought him to some new bay area friends. abc seven news reporter tim johns has more on this incredible reunion. >> it's a reunion. two years in the making, and it all started back when edward ayton says he lost his airpods at the burning man festival in nevada in 2022, and it was just, you know, an hour or two away when i realized that i'd forgotten my airpods. >> you know, it's that first moment you go to make the phone call and you realize you have to hold the thing up to your face.

>> after he realized they were missing, ayton says he was able to track the airpods with the find my app on his phone. he began making videos on social media, documenting everywhere they went, eventually attracting thousands of viewers over the coming months. >> they traveled all over the united states. they spent time in iowa. they spent time in north carolina. we caught them walking down the street in new york at 3:00 in the morning one night, which was really exciting. >> that wasn't until just last week when the airpods suddenly appeared in santa rosa. just minutes away from ayton's home. >> and i realized i've got to go over there. i've got to go. i've got to go find them. >> so find them. he did. after knocking on the front door of the home where the airpods were located, ayton met chance colbert, whose dad peter had given him the airpods. i caught up with both of them on zoom, where chance proudly displayed the airpods in question. >> they actually are. i thought it would be fitting. they are the airpods i use every day. peter says he's not sure how he initially got ahold of the

airpods, since he wasn't at burning man back in 2022. >> a realtor by trade, he thinks he might have gotten them from a house that he sold sometime after the festival before giving them to his son. after meeting chance and being reunited with his old airpods once again, ayton says he allowed chance to keep them. the only condition was that he had to make a donation to the local redwood empire food bank. >> we've all volunteered at food banks, specifically redwood empire. so yeah, when i when i heard his request, i was happy to oblige. >> as for ayton, he's happy this story had a good ending, something he hopes will carry on into the future. >> if we can, you know, have the story end with, you know, even a little bit more joy, a little bit more help, a little bit more people, you know, paying it forward then that to me is the best ending in santa rosa. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> i feel like tracking it for so long through different states. i feel like the best ending would have been to get them back, but good for them. >> they worked it out.

city. look at all of our reporting stations right now. and it is clear, no matter where you are, even along the coast. half moon bay reporting clear skies. so today is the pick of the week. it is the warmest day of the week. total sunshine across the city today 71 in san francisco. warm sunshine in oakland at 78 will hit 84. in san jose, which is above average. and then we're getting hot in walnut creek, a high of 90. with those sunny skies, temperatures right now we're in the mid 50s to the mid 60s as we get you going on this tuesday. so looking at our inland temperatures first it. we're back into the 90s and our hottest areas today. total sunshine, low 90s by 3 p.m. a little breeze out there later on this afternoon around the bay shoreline. we are fog free. so once that sun is up here in an hour at 630, it's wall to wall sunshine throughout the day. highs in the upper 70s to the lower 80s. that breeze picks up this afternoon and along the coast it will be a sunny day. a nice day to be along the coast. we'll have those temperatures topping out in the mid 60s. let's take a look at the roads

with sue. good morning. >> good morning drew. and we're going to take a look at the bay bridge. >> we're keeping our eye on it. so far no metering lights yet so it's pretty easy drive into san francisco. no delays on the upper deck. we had an earlier problem coming off of i-5 on westbound 205 that has been cleared. so now your commute should begin in earnest up and over the altamont pass. speeds are starting to slow into livermore, and you've got about a 35 minute drive time from tracy. and we do have high winds on the altamont pass as well. so heads up there, guys. >> so thank you. day two of the democratic national convention is getting underway this morning. and tonight, governor gavin newsom will step into the spotlight during the ceremonial roll call of delegates confirming the vote that already made vice president harris the party's presidential nominee. abc news reporter jacqueline lee is live in chicago, where it was president joe biden who took center stage on night one. and jacqueline, it was an emotional evening for many. >> oh, that's right, amanda, there was not a dry eye in the

to a tumultuous year of campus demonstrations. the changes include no more encampments or masking to conceal your identity. abc seven news reporter lena howland explains why some say the changes are untenable. >> the fall semester starts this week at uc berkeley, and for uc president michael drake, it's been a summer of reflection. he said in a letter on monday. campus leaders spent recent months reviewing the events of the past year, which involved pro-palestinian protests taking over uc campuses. some like this demonstration at ucla, devolving into violence. now the uc system wants to strengthen and clarify policies and procedures. drake is vowing to enforce bans on campus encampments and identity concealing masks, but said in his letter our ultimate goal is for all of our community members to feel supported in their ability to express themselves. uc berkeley's chancellor echoed his support in a video message

their children have a reusable water bottle to access filtered water stations at schools. in addition, parents can go to a listening session this evening to get some more information about this. some water fountains at oakland schools are now off limits after district officials say lead was found in 22 usc campuses. the district published results of lead testing done at each campus, and each report shows the testing was done earlier this year before the new school year started. ashley long's son attends hillcrest. that's one of the schools with some contamination, and she's not only worried for her child's health but frustrated that the district is just now taking action. >> how did this happen over such a short period of time? or were we just not aware? or is there a notable information around what the damages are? >> and the district sent a statement saying in part, we are fixing any outlet. we find that shows lead levels exceeding the district's limit of five ppb to ensure that our students and staff are not exposed to

the city is focused on the area along mahone creek path near anderson drive. it's currently an encampment, but just last night, the city council passed a plan to turn it into a sanctioned one. they will use $2.2 million in grant money to pay for resources to support 47 people staying there. >> i'm so pleased that we have this way to move forward on bringing change to the streets right now. >> city council members passed the sanctioned campsite plan unanimously. it came after more than an hour of public comment

and discussion. many neighbors raised safety concerns about unhoused people in their area as others called for compassion. >> as a mother, as an individual, as a member of this active member of this community, i no longer feel safe walking down anderson drive. >> what this project is doing, in my opinion, is it's just perpetuating more of the segregation that we already have. >> a federal judge has issued a restraining order to stop san rafael from sweeping another encampment in town. it's part of a lawsuit brought by an unhoused man who's lived in the spot for years in the south bay. >> san jose is working toward its own solution to assist the unhoused. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey spoke to mayor matt mehan about a plan he learned about from a visit to a safe sleeping site in san diego. >> unmanaged, unsafe and undignified. that's how mayor matt mehan describes current living conditions for thousands in san jose. along streets and waterways throughout the city.

but he wants to end that era of encampments. to do that, the city will lean into the tent lifestyle, but in a way that stabilizes the people living in them very, very hard to take advantage of drug treatment or job training when you're living in a tent down by the creek in a completely unmanaged encampment, and this site is helping people stabilize and get on to something better. this is the site he's talking about. the largest safe sleeping location in san diego. mehan recently visited the encampment to learn how san jose may implement similar sites here soon. 400 insulated tents housed hundreds of unhoused residents there, provided meals, showers, restrooms and security, along with other services. >> it was clear that this was a supportive environment where people are getting access to services. they're not worried about the basic things that we all take for granted, but people living on our streets don't have safety access to sanitation, access to three meals a day. >> the basics mehan hopes 500

san jose residents will be housed in safe sleeping sites by mid 2025. the city has identified eight potential sites for smaller, sanctioned encampments, around 100 to 200 tents at each. two of the proposed sites, near loooooong and willow streets, already face backlash from residents. at a december community meeting. but unhoused advocate todd langton says the public should get on board. he says if done properly and not made to be a prison for the unhoused. these sites benefit the entire community. it's the first step in getting people housed. we need these transitional encampments to get people off the streets, out of the fields, into safe places where they can sleep, where they can eat, where they can get continuum of care and start the transition into permanent housing. mehan says the first site may open as early as the start of 2025. in san jose, dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> a wild scene at a beach in monterey. hundreds of sea lions have taken it over and forced

officials to close the beach to humans indefinitely. the sea lions started moving in last week right as the world famous monterey car week was happening. loud noises from the car show scared them back into the water, but only briefly. by sunday night, dozens of sea lions were covering the sand. >> yeah, we've had a few people say that they've never seen them a come over here in this many numbers. this is definitely an odd thing to happen here. >> the monterey bay national marine sanctuary has been talking to people about the importance of giving the animals their space. they've also been alerting divers since this is one of the most popular diving spots in monterey. they were just littered across the beach. >> i mean, it's their home now. >> we're just visiting it. we are visiting. >> don't get close to them or the cows, as we said yesterday. >> we're learning. i wonder what animal tomorrow will learn to stay away from. this morning, let's show you a beautiful picture. our east bay hills
