>> just minutes ago, the ceremonial roll call got underway at day two of the democratic national convention. but instead of beginning alphabetically, the state of delaware kicked things off in honor of president joe biden, senator chris and delaware congressmember lisa blunt. rochester spoke for the delegates from biden's home state. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> the roll call is similar to years past, but with a few twists, so don't be surprised if california isn't called fifth for the very latest from chicago. >> let's go to abc seven news reporter julian glover, joining us live from inside the united center. julian, once again, california front and center there tonight. covid >> yeah, california actually just passed moments ago. it looks like we're now on connecticut as this ceremonial celebratory roll call, as they're calling it, is underway. this is where state party leaders are gracing the stage and ceremoniously delivering their delegates, pledging their

support for vice president kamala harris. we know that they again skipped california and minnesota. that's not because they don't matter or things are out of order, but because those are the home states of vp harris and her running mate, governor tim walz. again, we are taking a live look. they have a dj keeping the energy flowing and pumping as we wait for the next state to be called here, we'll be monitoring it all right here on abc seven news. again, we do expect to see a contingent of california delegates led by california governor gavin newsom. that will be happening at the end of tonight's roll call. earlier today, we did speak with one of those delegates. san francisco mayor london breed, about the meaning of this moment. we've known her for so long. >> well, i'm here for that moment, and i'm looking forward to it. and the fact that california is going to put her over the top, it's going to be electric in this place, but also electric in the entire bay area. >> what will you say to her the first time you get to talk to

her after this moment? >> i don't even know what to say other than, oh my god, i'm going to be really excited. and i know she is. >> again, the energy inside of the united center, it has been tangible. it has been electric since night one. and day two certainly is not disappointing back here. live inside of the united center, you're looking at mayor muriel bowser of the district of columbia, not a state, but of course, they have delegates to again, the ceremonial roll call started just a few minutes ago, and it is expected to wrap up within the hour. by the end of that, we will see governor newsom and the california delegation on the stage. vice president kamala harris, she is not in chicago tonight. she's on the road campaigning in milwaukee, but she is expected to join remotely at the end of that roll call to ceremoniously accept her party's nomination. again, all of this building up to the excitement within the party for tonight's headliners, they don't get

investigators say it appears the person came into contact with energized electrical lines inside that vault. that person has not been identified, and it's unclear why they were in that hazardous area. >> residents in a santa clara condo complex are relieved to know a major mail theft operation is now shut down. security footage captured the thieves using stolen mail keys to access dozens of mailboxes. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has more on the investigation and what the complex is doing to prevent future mail crimes. >> many people see is just that truck right there. the uniform. it's a little uncomfortable at times. >> being a mail carrier can be challenging, but it shouldn't be dangerous. that's not always the case for this postman. however, he told us his guard has been up a lot more while delivering mail at the hildebrandt condos in santa clara. the mail here has been the target of repeated thieves for a year like this. theft on security camera. august 5th. >> it would either be either be early in the morning or late at

night, so there was no rhymeit.e we decided to take on social media and post it everywhere. >> and it worked. santa clara police arrested 12 suspects for their role in a major fraud ring, specializing in mail thef. scpd found u.s. postal mail keys and a uniform along with drugs, gambling machines, body armor and other illegal items. along with all that large amounts of stolen mail, including id cards, checkbooks, and license plates. >> they're making a living out of this and stealing people's identity. >> the suspects used the stolen universal usps mail keys to open up the mail slots and steal the contents inside. the united states postal inspection service was part of the investigation. inspector matthew norfleet says stolen keys are a widespread problem, and they put carriers at risk. >> letter carriers are being robbed of these keys really on an altogether alarming basis, the daily or weekly occurrence across the bay area, across the country, just because arrests

have been made doesn't mean these neighbors are taking any chances. >> along with security cameras and alarms monitored 24 over seven by century security, these coded key lock covers aim to deter potential thieves from using stolen usps keys, anything to prevent more stolen mail. >> in most cases, what we want to do is not really catch, but make sure they leave, right? and so crime prevention is very important to us. >> the investigation in santa clara is ongoing. if you are a victim of a mail theft crime, you are asked to reach out to usps in santa clara. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> well, now to san francisco, where the enactment of multiple parking restrictions followed by threats of towing and parking tickets, has finally led to stable housing for many people living in rvs on san francisco's winston drive and zoo road. abc seven news reporter louis pena has been following this story for months now, and is here with the very latest on the changes. louis.

>> yes, dan, it's been a long process for many families and people living in rvs in san francisco's lake merced area. many of them lost their jobs during the pandemic and had to either rent rvs or buy them to not end up on the streets. now, after several years, they finally have permanent housing just days before many kids start the school year. after a year living in an rv with her daughter and two grandkids. rosales and her family finally have a home. we're very happy because we have a stable place, and we don't have to be out in the streets anymore. the apartment may look empty with no furniture, but she says it's filled with so much love and peace. we sat on the carpet where she talked about being grateful for this place. now they start school. >> gracias a dios. >> and they're at peace next to her nine year old christopher. are you happy? yes. christopher now has his own room and an air mattress with his favorite stuffed animals. one of his

favorite parts of having a home is running water. they are one of over 20 households the city placed into permanent housing over the weekend. all rv residents who used to park on winston drive until the city implemented a four hour parking limit for a repaving project. many ended up moving to zoo road, but were asked to move again or get towed. last week, social workers and city staff offered them financial vouchers that made it easier for them to afford housing, and many accepted. we were able to connect with 27 households. >> that's both families with children and adults and we have moved 21 of those households into permanent housing as of today, and there's still a few more in process. >> this also means the city will pay for a large portion of the rent for up to three years. in some cases. >> this is a time limited rental subsidy program, so the family or individual will pay 30% of

their income towards the rent, and the subsidy makes up the rest up to market rate value, a feat that was only accomplished thanks to a partnership with parkmerced, the largest single landlord participating in the section eight program. >> the city vet them through their standard qualification process. parkmerced maximus. we also have a standard qualification process, a partnership with the city of san francisco that opened the doors for many families to finally exit homelessness. now they have homes so we're so grateful that we got to support with the city and support in finding these homes for these families. >> now, where are the rvs? several families told me they are planning to sell them or give them back to the people who were renting them. the city is also offering these families information on a state program that buys used vehicles, and everyone i spoke to had something in common a sense of peace. now luz pena, abc seven news. >> the joy of just having running water. all right, luce, thank you so much. a long time

fourth street caught fire just around 10:00 this morning. the flames came from a pile of debris in a vacant lot next door that had caught fire. the house has moderate damage. the residents will be allowed back in the debris pile was left over from two abandoned houses that caught fire back in march. we reported on that. back then, it was supposed to be cleaned up today, but this happened. >> supervisor aaron peskin revealed his plan for solving the unhoused crisis in san francisco. if he gets elected mayor. he laid out the details while also attacking mayor london breed for bad leadership

on this issue. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with the mayoral candidate earlier today. >> i can run and i know how to make the city solve this problem. >> a different plan to tackle one of the biggest issues in san francisco. if supervisor aaron peskin is elected mayor, he wants to overhaul the city's unhoused response. >> the bread and butter of a mayor is systemic management reform of the tangled system that the city currently has. >> it centers on six key areas reform. management of homelessness. lead a regional approach. stop evictions. offer more shelter instead of encampment sweeps and student homelessness. and create a new plan for affordable housing. >> homeless people are being swept from one neighborhood into another. and what i am proposing is standing up the shelter beds that we need, creating the facilities to address the behavioral health crisis that we are experiencing and ultimately, that is a solution that has is going to have lasting impact. >> the supervisor and mayoral

candidate laid out this plan in the mission district, joined by a few community leaders. peskin has been on the board of supervisors for almost 20 years. he claims mayor london breed is to blame for the current state of the homelessness epidemic. we reached out to the mayor's office and the other candidates for mayor, but we haven't heard back yet. breed is currently at the democratic national convention, but earlier this month, she said the city has seen progress in finding housing for long time. san franciscans who are facing homelessness at the end of july, she was ready to implement governor newsom's executive order, pushing cities to remove encampments and get people into housing. >> we're excited about what this is going to do, and we're hopeful we make it so uncomfortable for people that they accept our offer. that's what this is about. >> supervisor peskin is against encampment sweeps and proposes buying empty properties in the city and converting them to shelters. he also wants to consolidate the many nonprofits and city departments into a more central agency, with nine different city agencies, 248 nonprofit service providers.

but before the parade and festival, an entire week of events is underway. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes spoke with organizers about what to expect and the boost they hope it gives the community. >> reporter downtown san jose is set to come alive this week. the boost of energy coming from silicon valley pride. >> we think pride should be celebrated 365 days in a year, and we tend to uplift that by organizing various events, through throughout the year,

efforts that are intensifying this week, in the days leading up to silicon valley pride parade and festival, from a drag cooking showdown to a pride edition of the famous pueblo night market. >> each weekday is a pride celebration that organizers hope brings a wide ranging impact. >> we're hoping that attendees will support local businesses in terms of like staying at their hotels, eating at their restaurant and hopefully help local san jose economy and downtown san jose. >> businesses are banking on it. >> we're really excited about this activation, which will bring another 10,000 plus people to downtown. >> silicon valley pride week follows a series of events that have kept downtown san jose bustling, including san jose jazz fest, galaxycon and many more. >> we had so far the most successful summer since covid. absolutely. hands down. >> the summer success expected to continue with san jose state not just bringing in a new school year, but all new housing. following the opening of spartan village on the paseo last week. >> 400 plus students walking back and forth from campus to

crimes. >> okay, let's turn to our weather tonight and it's another night to check out the moon. i got to remember to do that. >> which it do that if you haven't done it yet, because it's absolutely spectacular. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. yeah. >> and dan and ama, it's going to be great conditions for viewing. that's for sure. this is the life. let me tell you. from our pier 39 camera. sea lions are just enjoying the sunshine and it has been a beautiful chamber of commerce day today. if you didn't get a chance to see that super blue moon, you still have an opportunity tonight. temperatures are running a little bit warmer than yesterday. four degrees in san jose, hayward up to in santa rosa. the winds are gusty once again. 32 miles an hour at sfo, 29 at napa. as we look at live doppler seven, the coast is clear. inland areas are enjoying a lot of sun. and here's a look at what you can expect. so there are going to be some big changes ahead. high pressure is going to start to take a back seat. this trough is going to deepen and it

is going to drive an early season front through the bay area on friday, which is going to bring us some precipitation. as we look at a live picture from our golden gate bridge camera, it is blue skies. 69 in san francisco, 76 in oakland, upper seconds around hayward, low 80s san jose and redwood city from our east bay hills. camera. we are seeing clear conditions right now. 87 in santa rosa. noticeably warmer, especially in our inland valleys. places like vacaville up to 94 right now, petaluma 73 and 80s from napa to concord to livermore from our exploratorium camera. the sun's out. the next three days. cooling trend gets underway. it's not so noticeable tomorrow, but it will be as we head into thursday and friday, especially when we get drizzle and a chance of showers. your weekend weather will feature brighter and warmer conditions going hour by hour. tonight the fog will begin to fill in overnight, going into tomorrow morning, we will see some areas of fog along the coast and bay, and then this is going to expand the marine layer that is over

the next couple of days. so do look for that cooling trend to continue. your temperatures first thing in the morning in the 50s and 60s. fog near the coastline. afternoon will be breezy near the coast 60s coast side, inland areas. you'll be in the 80s there will be plenty of sun for your wednesday. now thursday. notice the drop in temperatures. they come down into the low 80s below average for this time of year. friday it's almost going to feel like late fall low 60s to upper 70s. and that's when we're expecting that trough to come through. here we are expecting the trough to take most of its energy across the northern portion of california. but here we go. hour by hour. friday morning, 7 a.m. you have a little drizzle coming in at 1030 in the morning. rain starts to move into mendocino county and it will be primarily like i said, northern california. but the shower line starts to shift into our region and we will get not just drizzle, but also the shower chance, especially in the northern part of our viewing area. 4/10 in ukiah, 12 hundredths in santa rosa. accuweather seven day forecast does feature some nice weather
