president trump's vision for the country and her optimism for the future, a sentiment shared by longtime friend and outgoing oakland congresswoman barbara lee. to see vice president harris now ascent to the presidency presidency we do our work is really a confirmation that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. to date, the dnc has been big on personality and star power, with the clintons, obamas, even oprah stumping for harris. >> so i'm calling on all you independents and all you undecideds. >> inside of the united center. there is a united front behind the harris walz ticket. outside, dozens of uncommitted delegates staged a protest overnight, disappointed, they say, because the dnc has not allowed a palestinian speaker to address the convention before kamala harris takes the stage tonight, she'll be introduced by one of her closest advisers and self-described best friend, her

party hosted by supervisor connie chan and her office. but yes, you mentioned it. so many people excited to see her accept the nomination tonight, ranging from her childhood friends over to the ones who knew her when she held public office here in the city. vice president kamala harris is soon to be the democratic nominee for president, but for those who knew harris from her days growing up in the east bay and working in public office in san francisco, they're not surprised by her rise to the top of the ticket. >> i've always known who she is, and i've always known the leadership qualities that she's had since i grew up with her from first grade. >> childhood friend carol porter recently showed me around the neighborhood where she and harris grew up. fond memories, porter says, make her proud to support harris as she seeks the nation's highest office. >> it's almost very surreal to me, ryan, right now. i mean, we grew up in this little red line neighborhood in west berkeley, you know, just playing and having a good time, going to school really focused on you know, what we wanted to do in our future.
5:06 pm

5:07 pm
who she is, and that's through the actions that she's shown and the work she's done. >> now, we did reach out to the san francisco gop office for a response about the democratic national convention. we're waiting to hear back. the doors for tonight's watch party are expected to open in just about 20 minutes from now, but for now, reporting live in san francisco, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> all right, ryan, thanks very much. all right. here is another live look in chicago as day for the final day of the convention. well underway. speaking now are representatives of the central park five. those five people wrongly accused of rape in a central park case. they will be followed by east bay woman and former prosecutor amy ressner, who is a friend of harris. also on the schedule tonight are performances from the chicks and pink, as well as remarks from harris's sister and niece and speeches from former congresswoman gabby giffords and former secretary of defense leon panetta. now, don't forget, abc news will have special live coverage of the democratic national convention. it all

begins at 6:00 tonight and runs until at least 8 p.m, so stay tuned. in the meantime, let's move on to some other matters. in san francisco, a rescue organization for senior dogs is facing a major setback at its brand new location. muttville senior dog rescue says it still doesn't have enough power electricity literally to operate its vet clinic and some worry this means dogs across the state will have to be euthanized as a result. abc seven news reporter lena howland talked with the founder about what's being done to find a solution. >> muttville senior dog rescue has a new home. triple the size of their last location, the only problem? the power, the 29th of july. >> our power went off and it's been off since. >> p-g-and-e's says they worked extensively with muttville to provide guidance on steps needed to ensure safe, reliable and timely electric service. however montville's electric demand went beyond the low limit and p-g-and-e's was not informed of
5:09 pm
the change. the utility company said the demand overloaded p-g-and-e's circuit, twice damaging their equipment. >> my hope is dwindling by the day. >> sherri franklin is the founder and ceo of muttville. after weeks without power, she was asked to sign a so-called load limiting agreement on friday. by tuesday, p-g-and-e's got the lights back on, but it's still not enough power to run medical equipment and the computers needed to admit new senior dogs to the clinic. >> it's frustrating to wake up day after day sitting in this incredible space, knowing what we can be doing, and yet we can't actually do it. >> so for now, they're keeping the dogs at their old location on 16th and alabama, and they're paying extra to rent a clinic across town for other services. we usually bring in 20 to 25 dogs every single week, and right now we're bringing in 5 to 6 dogs a week. the current project is a rescue group that brings dogs from overcrowded
5:10 pm
shelters in the central valley, here to the bay area. now they have to turn dogs away because of the stoppage at muttville. >> it's heartbreaking. i'm sure they're euthanizing some of those dogs that we should be taking in at muttville in the meantime, p-g-and-e's says it's still working with muttville and a contractor on a long term plan. i think it's just the lack of the urgency felt on behalf of p-g-and-e's that's holding us up. >> in san francisco, lena howland abc seven news. >> when it comes to wildfires, it's been a tough year already for pg and e, and the worst of the season, keep in mind, isn't even here yet. today the utility announced that it is. its equipment is responsible for 62 fires in high threat areas. this year, compared to 65 in all of last year. pg and e blames the total on the abundance of fuel this year. the growth that happened after the rain. the utility is hoping technology and a task force it created last month will help reduce the

danger. >> right now, we've identified 50,000 poles within the highest fire risk areas to go out and work and try to remove that vegetation at ten feet around the base of the pole. by the start of september, the utility has spent more than $2 billion in fire mitigation efforts. >> in the last four years. watchdog groups say much of that cost was passed on to ratepayers who scene, who've seen their bills skyrocket more than 100% during that time frame. at least fire danger should be a little less of a concern tomorrow. around the bay area. here's a live look at the conditions right now. notice a big change today, and abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian is here. spencer, you're talking about at least the chance of drizzle, right? >> maybe some light rainfall along with the drizzle. dan so this is a pattern that certainly will reduce the chance of wildfires. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. we've got that low pressure system a cold one coming down from the gulf of alaska down through the pacific northwest. it's generating strong gusty
