♪ >> juju: welcome back. she calls herself the dolly parton of chimps, and she's gotten on the wrong side of authorities and animal rights activists who say she's unfit to keep them. but tanya haddock says she'll do anything for her pet primates. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> it's a good boy! >> reporter: today, "chimp crazy," a new hbo series created by the director behind "tiger king," drawing tough criticism both for its stars and the way it was made. >> i love these chimps more than anything in the world, and i mean more than anything. more than any kids.

>> reporter: the series largely focuses on tonya haddock, a woman who calls herself the dolly parton of chimps, and her relationship with a movie star chimp named tong ka featured in films like "george of the jungle." tanya admitting in the series she was willing to give her life for tonka. >> i'll do anything to protect that primate, anything. >> reporter: "chimp crazy" takes you inside the world of private exotic animal ownership. viewers following tanya in a legal battle with p.e.t.a. as she fights to keep her chimps, hiding her favorite, tonka, faking his death after a judge ordered she turn all her chimps over to a rescue group. >> i've always wanted to have monkeys from the age of 5 and up. of course, with all the chimp movies that you see in hollywood that type of stuff, the chimps would be what you'd consider a cadillac of the monkeys. >> reporter: p.e.t.a. saying tanya was never qualified to run

a center for chimpanzees, highlighting the animals' living conditions and diet, claims tanya disputes. >> she is not qualified to care for chimpanzees. she does not have any formal training. she's simply someone who likes chimpanzees. >> reporter: tanya finding the criticism she's received in the wake of the premiere difficult. >> it's all been crazy and tough. i wear my heart on my sleeve. >> reporter: chimpanzees are wild and dangerous animals, and living with one can be unsafe. the series also highlight is the story of travis, a 200-pound pet chimpanzee raised from birth by a connecticut woman. in 2009, he mutilated the face of his owner's friend, charla nash. the harrowing moments heard on a 911 call. >> he's killing my friend! >> who's killing your friend? >> my chimpanzee! >> your chimpanzee is killing your friend? >> yes. he ripped apart her nose!

>> reporter: the chimp shot and killed by authorities. nash's face was torn apart, and she was left permanently blind. nine months after the attack, she spoke to oprah. >> well, i'm getting stronger, healthier. and -- i'd like to put people's minds that these exotic animals are very dangerous. >> reporter: after multiple surgeries, nash had face transplant surgery in 2016. she spoke to nbc news about her resiliency. >> you're stubborn, you're independent, you're strong-minded, and you've got a great sense of humor. am i right on all of those? >> yep, and i'm ready. i want to ride horses again. >> do you think you will? >> i will. >> reporter: "chimp crazy" directed by eric goode, known for directing the series "tiger king." salacious as it was scandalous,

the show you had to see to believe. >> the audience will say, oh, my god that guy has a mullet. >> reporter: exploring the wild world of joe exotic, the former oklahoma zookeeper who bred big cats, especially tigers, and the outlandish cast of characters in his life. >> there's not every day that a zookeeper went to prison for murder for hire. >> reporter: the netflix mega hit tracing a seemingly never-ending feud between animal rights activist carole baskin and exotic, who's now serving a 21-year sentence for a murder-for-hire plot against her. for goode's new project, "chimp crazy," many critical of how this documentary was made. director goode hired a proxy director to work with the chimp owners so they wouldn't know he was behind the series. >> in 2020, i made "tiger king." "tiger king" shined a spotlight on this community, and it wasn't favorable. so for this project, i had to who ira proxy director to go undercover.

aside from lee daniels. >> yes, so that was obviously the primary draw. i love that it's based on a true story. people miss that a lot. i also just love -- i really love ebony. she's really trying to be the best mother she can be with all of her own generational trauma, her own unhealed pain, her own experiences that maybe she's never been able to talk about. >> juju: you have another album, "cassa "cassandra," which is the longer version of your name, andra. why name it all your full name? what is that inspiration? >> you know, i think -- first of all, i have been working on this project for, like, almost ten years now. i had love gained, love lost, made terrible mistakes, experiences pain, experienced great triumphs. extreme highs and lows. i feel like i've become a lot of different people. the truth is it's cassandra's journey. i'm on a journey, going from a place of feeling like an
