to prevent these types of fires. gloria. good morning. >> kumasi p-g-and-e's created a wildfire safety program task force last month, and it's using technology to recognize hazards that could start fires when dry fuels gather around power poles, fires can start at a p-g-and-e's spokesperson says they have identified 50,000 poles within the highest fire risk areas, and will try to remove vegetation ten feet around the base of the poles by the start of september. we all know that p-g-and-e's has increased rates over the last few years. they say it's to reduce wildfire risk and also make the electric system safer. but wildfires have not decreased, and they're hoping this task force will help. >> what we've done is we've created a task force based on the data that we're seeing in the field to look at what else could we be doing, what else might we need to change this year? >> p-g-and-e's is reporting 62 cpuc reportable ignitions from their equipment in high fire

that was there has been closed for about a year and a half. and in that time, there have been a dozen different fires in the building. crews got the fire under control in about an hour and no one was hurt. p-g-and-e's equipment has been responsible for some of the most destructive wildfires in our history. over the past few years, the utility has pushed to raise rates multiple times to help them address the situation, but it seems their equipment is still sparking flames. in fact, so far this year, 62 fires have been started by pga and pga equipment, and that's almost the same amount as all of last year. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is following this story. so, gloria, what is p-g-and-e's saying about their efforts to prevent these fires? >> well, reggie p-g-and-e's created a wildfire safety program task force last month. based on the data they're seeing in the field, to look at what else they could be doing and what else they might need to change. p-g-and-e's equipment has been blamed for sparking some of the state's deadliest wildfires in recent years. that includes the 2018 camp fire,

where 85 people died in the town of paradise. over the past few years. p-g-and-e's has increased rates, saying it's to reduce wildfire risk and also make the electric system safer. but wildfires have not decreased this year. p-g-and-e's is reporting 62 cpuc reportable ignitions from their equipment and high fire threat districts. 29 since july 1st in 2023, there were 65 the whole year when dry fuels gather around power poles, fires can start. and that's one thing the new task force is looking into. >> right now, we've identified 50 000 poles within the highest fire risk areas to go out and work and try to remove that vegetation a ten feet around the base of the pole. by the start of september, the customers are paying the price of more expensive and much slower wildfire safety. >> that is mark toney, the

executive director for the utility reform network. he says bills have skyrocketed more than 100% in the past four years, and with this latest fire data, toney says it's fair to customers to question if those increases are worth it. he would prefer to see cheaper, faster ways of wildfire mitigation, like insulated lines over seemingly constant increases with little results. the task force is using technology to recognize hazards that can start fires, and p-g-and-e's says a lot of receptive fuels on the ground are increasing the wildfire risk. along with the heat that is continuing to dry out. those fuels. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria, we're getting a look at how the oakland roots is planning to configure the field at the oakland coliseum. so the team released this animation. the pitch will run along the baseball third base line. the team says it will give fans the best sightlines and an intimate atmosphere. capacity for most games is going to be at 15,000.

now, the team is taking deposits for its 2025 season tickets. the home opener is set for march. >> this morning, doctors are revealing a new health benefit to one of the world's most popular weight loss drugs. a man is at the live desk with details on the expanded use for wegovy. yeah. >> reggie aqui wegovy was already approved by the fda back in march for use to prevent heart attack and stroke, but this new study found it is beneficial in preventing any kind of cardiovascular disease and heart failure. >> doctors monitored 17,000 people with preexisting heart disease for this study. these people were overweight or obese but did not have diabetes, which is what wegovy was originally designed to treat. this new study found wegovy lowered the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiac death by as much as 44%. >> it makes us metabolize glucose better. they also reduce blood pressure. they are cardioprotective in the sense that they improve left

say these makeshift fences have popped up over the past week or so. property owners have reported people and pets trespassing on their property, sitting on their furniture or just not picking up after themselves. some beachgoers understand that frustration. >> there's so many people, people putting up little tent shade structures. there's dogs running around. it gets very, very full and i can understand how some homeowners wouldn't want people coming right up to their decks. >> others want the fences to come down for the county to enforce laws allowing public access to the beach. >> we all love the beach, right? here i am with my son and my dog, running around throwing the frisbee and chasing the dog around, and that seems like something we should all have access to. >> the county says it started an investigation into whether or not the fences are on public land or the homeowner's property. in the meantime, it's asking that these fences be removed, since all of them are unpermitted. >> a san francisco dog rescue

organization is facing major setbacks at its new location. there's not enough power to run the facility. muttville senior dog rescue has only been in its new location on florida street for a month. it is triple the size of its previous shelter, just a few blocks away on alabama street in the mission. the only problem is, pretty much the whole time the power has been unreliable. >> it's frustrating to wake up day after day sitting in this incredible space, knowing what we can be doing, and yet we can't actually do it. >> p-g-and-e's says they worked with muttville to provide guidance on the amount of power they would need, but that the shelter went beyond the load limit and the utility was not informed of the change. some power has now been restored, but it's not enough to run medical equipment in the clinic or computers. muttville has had to move their dogs to its old location and rely on other clinics for services. while they work on the power issue. they
