6:20 am
sunshine and summerlike temps, skies. >> all right thanks to you. now we're going to bring in gio benitez. he's live with a look at his sit down interview with the alaska airlines pilot who tried to shut down the engines mid-flight. that is coming up on gma. >> good morning gio. >> hey kumasi. hey reggie. good morning. yeah this is a really unbelievable story. and we were actually there in the bay area talking to him because he and his wife, they are now telling their story and they want to be very upfront about what it is that happened to him and what he says happened to him. and they want to make change. they want to make change for medical care among pilots. so let's go ahead and take a look at a little bit of this interview. and then we'll talk about the change they want to make in a second. >> there was a feeling of being trapped. like, am i trapped in this in this airplane. and now i'll never go home. there was always that feeling of not really being in the present moment. and i need to wake up, essentially wake up from this experience. this is not real. i need to wake up. there are two red handles in front of my face,
6:21 am
thinking that i was going to wake up, thinking, this is my way to get out of this non-real reality. i reached up and i grabbed it and i pulled the levers. >> did you know what the levers were at the time? what i thought is, this is going to wake me up. >> i know what those levers do in a real airplane, right? and i need to wake up from this, and, it's, 30s of my life. i wish i could change, and i can't. >> so reggie aqui and kumasi, one of the things that he was telling me was that in the days leading up to this, he wasn't getting a lot of sleep. and two days before he actually took for the first time psychedelic mushrooms, he's been dealing with some kind of depression for a while now. after the death of his best friend, and so he had turned to alcohol and he had turned to this, and at one point, you know, he says that someone suggested maybe you should see a psychiatrist to try to get some help for this. but he says, you know, i can't do
6:22 am
that, because if i do that, then my medical, you know, certification to be a pilot could be taken away and i will lose my job. and so this is a real fear among pilots. and so one of the things that they're doing is that they've created this organization called clear skies ahead to talk about this issue with medical care for pilots and making sure that they don't feel afraid of being diagnosed and being treated because, as one of the doctors said at an ntsb hearing, he says, hey, would you rather have a depressed pilot or a depressed pilot with medication and that's really what it comes down to. guys it's very interesting to hear him speak because we haven't heard him talk to you before. >> this is the first tv interview that he's given. we've heard from his wife before in print. so this is fascinating to watch. i'm curious, did you have a discussion about why he wanted to do this interview with you? >> because he wants to be totally forthcoming about it, and he wants to make change. you know, he's still awaiting trial.
6:23 am
he doesn't know if he's going to fly again. he doesn't think he's going to fly again. he doesn't know what's going to happen to him if he's going to go to prison or not, because he is facing, you know, 84 different counts. so that's a very big deal. but he's basically saying, listen, whatever it is, i want to go ahead and help in some way. and if we can do that by making change with regulations for medical care for pilots, then he wants to be a part of that. >> all right. thank you gio. we appreciate that. when you have moderate to severe eczema, it's okay to show off. with dupixent, show off your clearer skin and less itch. because you have plenty of reasons to show off your skin. with dupixent, the #1 prescribed biologic by dermatologists and allergists, you can stay ahead of your eczema. it helps block a key source of inflammation inside the body that can cause eczema to help heal your skin from within. many adults saw 90% clearer skin,
6:24 am
some even achieved long-lasting clearer skin and fast itch relief after first dose. serious allergic reactions can occur that can be severe. tell your doctor about new or worsening eye problems such as eye pain or vision changes including blurred vision, joint aches and pain, or a parasitic infection. don't change or stop asthma medicines without talking to your doctor. show off to the world. ask your eczema specialist about dupixent.

i'll say what city hall insiders won't. ask your eczema specialist we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis, because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit. i'm daniel lurie and san francisco needs a mayor unafraid to take on the status quo, bring accountability, and stop the excuses.
