the privilege and pride of being an american. >> reporter: vowing to take the country forward. >> we know what a second trump term would look like. but america, we are not going back. we are not going back. >> reporter: as the balloons fell, harris closing out the convention with a family and running mate by her side. now harris did not mention her race or gender here last night, or tackle the history of this moment head on, but it certainly was not lost on this crowd. women, especially black women, in their white, overcome by emotion. this was a convention like we have never seen before, from the many celebrity appearances to those barn burner speeches by political heavyweight. now kamala harris and her team have to carry this momentum

forward. in a rare move, she's not hitting the campaign trail immediately today, but make no mistake this will be an all out sprint to the finish. george, 74 days to go. >> george: okay, mary, thank you very much. let's bring in rachel scott, who's tracking the trump campaign. donald trump went to two of his favorite venues to respond in real time, truth social and fox news. >> reporter: yes, george. donald trump said he was going to be watching this speech in real time. he was. he was clearly frustrated by what he heard. he posted on his social media app, truth social, more than 40 times during the democratic national convention, insisting that kamala harris is all talk and no action. in a series of rambling posts at one point the former president posting in all capital letters, is she talking about me? of course she was. kamala harris went after donald trump on a range of issues, including january 6th, reproductive rights, national security, bipartisan border bill that he tanked. he appeared to grow only more and more frustrated and attempted to defend himself

saying he wants to protect access to ivf and birth control. he went on to defend himself, insisting the bipartisan border security deal that his own party negotiated, that he called on them to reject was weak and ineffective. donald trump's advisers have been pushing him to focus on policy, to turn away from insults and at tax. the former president has been on a blitz during the democratic national convention. just a few hours he is set to appear with independent candidate robert f. kennedy jr. in arizona. sources tell us kennedy is expected to drop out of this race. he has been known for pushing range of conspiracy theories during his short bid for the white house. it's unclear how much of an impact it's going to have on this election, george, with just 74 days to go, it is a dead heat. >> george: thank you very much. let's bring in jonathan karl. jonathan, as i look at who this speech was aimed at last night, i think of a lot of m worsed. moderates, middle class, middle america. >> reporter: absolutely. a direct response to the way donald trump has tried to define

her. they talk about her, the republicans, the trump republicans, as a san francisco liberal, as a radical. they call her comrade kamala. if you take out the section on abortion rights, much of this speech could have been delivered at a republican convention, a republican convention before trump. she talked tough on iran. she promised that as commander in chief, america would have the most lethal and strongest fighting force in the world. she talked tough on russia, on china. she talked about border security. she really gave a speech that was designed to go at independents, moderates, disaffected republicans. the vast majority of undecided voters in the country. a very interesting move. quite a contrast from the way she ran for president the first time when she tried to get the nomination four years ago. this is a kamala harris that sounded a little bit more like maggie thatcher or ronald reagan, especially on national

security, than like bernie sanders. >> george: there's more talk about ronald reagan at the democratic convention than democratic convention. democrats making a play to claim patriotism on their side. >> reporter: yeah. there's an opening there. donald trump has used words like american carnage to talk about america. has portrayed a more isolationist, protectionist view that is at odds with what ronald reagan was all about. this was kamala harris. she didn't say the word city on a hill like ronald reagan did, but full embrace of patriotism. the american flags waving here. the chants of usa, usa, usa. this is a party under kamala harris that is saying that -- appealing to patriotism. you all heard the message from republican speakers every night saying voting for kamala harris is not about being a republican or democrat, it's about being a patriot.

>> george: it will take sometime to see what impact the convention ice had on the polls. we already know her favorability numbers have climbed. >> reporter: this is going to be -- this is likely to be a very close race. but if you look at what's happened. her favorability. she was as unpopular as joe biden was a month ago. her favorability in the polls has steadily gone up over the past four weeks, even before this convention started. >> george: jon karl, thank you very much. gio? >> gio: now record heat, with millions on alert for record breaking temperatures. you know ginger is tracking it all. good morning, ginger. it is hot out there. >> ginger: it's not that it's so hot. it's texas. we have reliable records going back 115 years. we've been writing it down for a long time. never has it been this hot in del rio or san angelo or amarillo. all of them had hottest temperatures on record. we do have daily records possible today.

you'll see some excessive warnings that go from southern oklahoma along the river valley there, wichita falls. could see hot, 114 degrees. be extra careful if any of that time is spent outside. rebecca, they will get a little break in places like abilene, but atlanta by next week starts to feel those records. >> rebecca: all over again, ginger. thank you. we turn to some improving news for home buyers. mortgage rates are dropping and existing home sales are on the rebound. elizabeth schulze is in washington. good morning. >> reporter: this really is welcome relief for home buyers. mortgage rates are at their lowest level since may of last year. the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage 6.46%. if you are trying to buy a home of the average price in the u.s. around $400,000, that means your payment is $2500. that's 200 bucks cheaper than last year but still $860 more expensive than three years ago when we saw those rates near an all time low. that is preventing a lot of homeowners who locked in low monthly payments from moving, but we are seeing signs that

buyers who have been delaying the house hunt are getting off the sidelines. home sales increased in july after four straight months of decline. mortgage rates are expected to dip even lower this year as the federal reserve starts to cut borrowing costs likely as soon as next month. we could see clues about just how much the fed will cut rates when the fed chief delivers a major speech later this morning. rebecca? >> rebecca: so many eyes on that speech. so many homeowners, home buyers, would be buyers, renters, everyone is watching this because they've been on the sidelines for so long. hopefully this brings some new homes to market. and maybe some refinancings as well, to make things less expensive. >> let's hope. >> rebecca: yes, we can hope. george? >> george: now the new study on wegovy. researchers say it may significantly slash risk of heart attack and stroke. eva pilgrim with details. >> reporter: good morning, george. these popular weight loss drugs are not on helping people drop

pounds. new study showing these medications can lower a person's risk of heart related issues substantially. the study published in the new england journal of medicine looked at over 17,000 people with preexisting heart disease. it found that long term use of wegovy reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke by 44%. it also reduced the risk of death from end cause in a big way. researchers found people on the medication lost weight and had better blood pressure. now, wegovy is already fda approved to reduce the risk of heart disease for those obese and overweight. it's also approved for weight loss for that same group of people. these studies are critical because this growing data could help clear the way for more people to have access and coverage for this medication, gio. >> gio: such important headlines right there, eva. thank you so much. all right. we're going to the little league world series now, down to the final four teams. our major leaguer, trevor ault, is here to break it all down. hey, trevor.

at 723. new this morning, a two alarm fire that burned an abandoned restaurant in oakland is under investigation. flames broke out around 1230 this morning on dennison at cotton street. firefighters. firefighters say the restaurant that was there has been closed for about a year and a half. and in that time, there have been a dozen different fires in that building. crews got this fire under control in about an hour, and no one was hurt. how's friday morning traffic? amanda. >> hi, reggie. we'll start at the richmond-san rafael bridge with the richmond cam stop and go. traffic between canal boulevard and the tolls. you'll see a nine minute delay there. then to the south bay, 87 still quiet across the south bay. no problems in either directions. more cars, obviously driving on the northbound side. i'll end with mass transit. ace train three is about 15 minutes delayed, but bart and caltrain doing okay. reggie. thanks >> i'm meteorologist drew

time as he awaits trial. >> sara and i would like our story to be of some value. we think it tells the larger story on pilot health. >> gio: testify last october when he was catching a ride from everett washington to san francisco when he says nothing felt real. >> there was a feeling of being trapped. like, am i trapped in this airplane? this is not real. i need to wake up. >> gio: emerson said she had taken psychedelic mushrooms for the first time two days before the flight thinking they might help with depression, but believes he was still hallucinating during that flight. he stood up and pulled handles in the cockpit that are meant to shut off the engine in the event of a fire. it didn't work. and if it had, that could have brought the plane down. >> there are two red handles in front of my face. thinking that i was go to wake up, thinking this is my way to get out of this unreal raoe

reality. i reached up and grabbed an pulled the levers. >> gio: did you know what the levers were at the time? >> what i thought is, this is going to wake me up. i know what the lever doss in a real airplane, right? i need to wake up from this. it's a scary section of my life that i wish i could change and i can't. hearing the pilots react to the difficult situation that i handed. i said you want me off the flight deck? i'm off the flight deck? >> gio: he left the flight deck. listen to one of the pilots. >> we've got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. >> gio: emerson said she tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit door and the flight attendant stopped it. >> i put my hand on the lever. i didn't operate the lever. she put her hand on mine. i said, i don't understand what's real. i need you to cuff me. >> gio: in the air he texted his wife. >> he texted me, i made a big mistake. >> gio: what were you thinking? >> i was like, what in the hell is he talking about? i immediately got on flight aware 'cause that's how i can

track him. i saw that the plane was diverted. i think i texted him back, this is because of you. >> gio: emerson said he had been struggling from some form of depression ever since his best friend scott suddenly passed away, but didn't turn to a psychiatrist for medication, worrying a formal diagnosis could end his career. he instead turned to alcohol and eventually those psychedelic mushrooms in october. >> coming into this i hadn't been sleeping a lot the night that i took the magic mushrooms. i did not sleep that night. and so this cumulative sleep deficit i believe may have also impacted just my perception of what was going on. >> gio: emerson now speaking about it all in the new documentary the new york times presents "lie to fly" on fx as he and his wife focus on increasing awareness about mental health in the cockpit. >> right now there's a perception out there that if you raise your hand and say something's not right, there's a very real possibility that you

don't fly again. >> gio: at least one doctor saying an ntsb summit in december, it's time to modernize the mental health regulations for pilots. >> who would you rather fly with, a pilot depressed or a pilot who's depressed on medication? that's what it comes down to. >> i think pilots and controllers can obtain a proper diagnosis and begin a proper form of treatment. if they're safe in that course of treatment, right, keep pilots, controllers under going treatment who are safe on the job. i think that's a better system. >> gio: emerson faces 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of endangering aircraft in first degree. he's pleaded not guilty. incredibly, he says, this has made his marriage and relationship with his children much stronger. >> i'm doing the best i can to work through that process right now. i'm better for it, which is kind of a weird thing to say. but i really am better for all of this. it's not the way i would have

trevor sault ault is back with story. it has a happy ending this time. >> it does. it was quite scary for awhile. this 8-year-old spent the night alone in the rain. it took a massive effort and even a rescue team from the other side of the country to get him back safely to his parents. this morning the dramatic moments an 8-year-old boy is rescued in arizona. he and his family were visiting the lava river cave, the longest in the state, stretching 3,820 feet. around 6 p.m. wednesday night the family last saw him at the mouth of the cave and then he disappeared. >> they just came out of the cave and noticed that he was miss. >> reporter: family and law enforcement frantically searching the area. panic growing as the rain began to fall and darkness set in. >> when you get rained on and you are out overnight there's a concern for hypo therplia. >> reporter: his mother placing a call to a rescue team in new york. >> we dropped whatever we had

>> the first thing is to set the tone early. i want parents to remember being able to pay for your child's education is not an obligation. it is a blessing. so don't give it the energy as if it's some kind of obligation. explore financial aid. scholarships, grants. i have three daughters. they were all in school at the same time. i told them, listen, if you get a's you go to school for free. if you get c's you going to the free school. either way it will be free for me. the next thing is to develop a plan and stick to it. finally, look at those tax breaks. irs publication 15 page 15 says you can hire your child to work in your home based business. you can pay each child up to $13850. i had three kids in college at the same time. that's over $40,000. it's tax free to you. it's a tax writeoff to you. tax free to them. look at all those options. >> rebecca: great options. i graduated with some student loan debt. everything did end up working out in the end.

"daughters" is about this wonderful program for dads who are incarcerated, where they go through a parenting work shop. at the end there's a father/daughter dance, where they get to take off their jump suits and spend time with their daughters. it changes their lives. i got interested in the documentary because of "unprisoned." "unprisoned" taught me a lot about how the criminal justice system impacts families. the ripple effect of these systems. "daughters" is a deep dive into that idea.
