hospitalized and 38 homes were destroyed. settlement funds from the disaster were used to build a new community aquatic center, which opened today. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard gives us a look. >> it's great to see a culmination of all the work and all the time put in by an awful lot of folks. >> parks and rec commissioner mike palmer giving us a look inside the new san bruno recreation and aquatic center. three pools, a fitness center and a gym. a place to enjoy and reflect on a tragic day in the city's history. >> it's a it's a fitting tribute to know that on september 9th, 2010, a gas pipeline owned and operated by p-g-and-e's exploded in san bruno's crestmoor neighborhood, killing eight people, injuring dozens, and damaging or destroying nearly 40 homes. >> the whole community was devastated. the neighborhood was destroyed. people still where the mental and physical scars of that evening. >> mayor medina says the new aquatic center is dedicated to

the lives lost. it's built and paid for through a $70 million restitution settlement from p-g-and-e's. >> the old adage is something good from that devastation that happened on september 9th of 2010 has to come good out of this. and this behind me is exactly what it is. >> i ran out in the front yard and i could see flames up in the sky. >> pamela fornaci remembers that day vividly. just like her daughter in law, tessa. >> i looked out the window. we all thought it was a plane that had come down. and then we got word. and then one of our friends actually had to evacuate the state of the art rec center and pool is the result of years of input from the community about how they wanted that money from p-g-and-e's to be spent. >> i think the overall project. great idea, good way to spend that money. yes. why is that? because i think it's something that all of san bruno can use in one way or another. >> city leaders say this $51 million, 49,000 square foot

building is also a testament to the resilience of this community. >> san bruno came together. we stood together. we were like san bruno strong with san bruno pride, and we rebuilt in san bruno. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> beautiful building right there. today marks the ten year anniversary of a day many napa residents will never forget. august 24th, 2014 a 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook the area. the quake was centered south of napa, killing two people and leaving about 200 others injured. total damage in the southern napa valley and vallejo area was estimated to be up to $1 billion. a cooler day in the bay area with some parts getting some wet streets at times. this morning, rain sprinkles fell on 19th avenue in san francisco's sunset district. these windshield wipers getting a workout for the first time in months. let's get a first look at our accuweather forecast. here is abc seven weather anchor spencer christian. >> all right j.r. my windshield

wipers got a little bit of a workout this morning as well. over in the east bay. let me give you a look at some of our rainfall totals. it was a fairly wet day certainly for this time of the year. so saint helena received eight hundredths of an inch, four hundredths at novato, 18 hundredths at orinda. it looks like that may be our wettest spot in other locations like oakland, san francisco, about 4 or 5 hundredths of an inch, and sfo a 10th of an inch. generally we received under a 10th of an inch, but some locations were a little bit higher than that. now, we're not likely to get any more measurable rain. you can see on the satellite radar composite image that low pressure system along the coastline of the pacific northwest, generating an onshore flow and producing showers that are beginning to move out of the bay area right now. but here's our forecast animation going into the evening hours starting at 4 p.m. notice some showers still may occur up in the north bay and the northernmost part of our viewing area, but they will quickly move out of here. and then as we go into the evening and late night hours, we may see some light sprinkles along the coastline, perhaps possibly moving onshore, but not much is expected in the

way of measurable rain. as you can see on the rainfall estimates, maybe 100th of an inch over in fairfield, maybe a two hundredths near yountville. and that's about it. now we have sunnier and much warmer days ahead. i'll give you a look at the accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes j.r. >> spencer, thank you so much. we look forward to that. developing news. isis has claimed responsibility for a deadly knife attack at a music festival in germany. three people were killed, eight others injured. now authorities have one teenager in custody and a massive search is underway for other suspects near the city of solingen. abc news reporter emma nguyen has the latest. >> the joyful celebration of the 650th anniversary of the german city of solingen, marred by violence. just before 10 p.m. friday night, a suspect began randomly attacking people with a knife at the city's festival of diversity. the festival's organizer taking to the stage warning people to keep calm as special forces worked to secure the area. at least three people

killed, including a 67 year old man, a 56 year old man and a 56 year old woman. several other victims injured, four seriously. the city's mayor saying last night our hearts were torn apart as he visited the site of the attack, where people have begun leaving flowers in honor of the victims. authorities provided an update on the investigation saturday afternoon. they say several knives were found on the scene and announced the arrest of a 15 year old for failure to report planned crimes. investigators say they're looking into whether another suspect may have discussed the planned attack with the teenager. police are asking for the public's help, urging witnesses to contact them with any information or videos and not to share those videos on social media. authorities say a motive for the attack is still unclear, adding that they have not ruled out terrorism. germany's chancellor, olaf scholz, says such acts must be harshly punished. we must never

accept this in our society. a strong police presence remained at the scene on saturday. the rest of the three day festival of diversity has been canceled. and when abc news washington. >> the san mateo county transit district is warning of possible service disruptions as early as monday because of a potential work stoppage. the union, representing about 400 bus operators, utility and other workers, just rejected a three year contract proposal from the district. samtrans is advising customers to seek alternative transportation options on monday and possibly tuesday. samtrans says it will prioritize school service and paratransit service will not be interrupted. east bay bart service was back on its regular weekend schedule today. it comes after a major delay affected stations around downtown oakland last night. service was stopped between ashby west oakland, rockridge

and lake merritt because of an equipment problem on the track near the macarthur station. bart says repairs were completed overnight. the political fight over the future of san francisco's great highway has citizens on both sides of the debate. back on the streets today. supporters of the no. on prop k movement held their latest demonstration, a march near the civic center. this morning they're pushing to keep a two mile stretch of the great highway open, asking city officials to reconsider a plan to turn the portion of the road into a park. no on k supporters say closing the great highway could push an unmanageable amount of traffic into their neighborhoods. >> there's health issues, safety issues. you're having 14,000 vehicles on the streets where your kids are trying to play or walk on the sidewalk, or get out of the car of their parents and things. it's dangerous. >> neighbors opposed to prop k want to keep the current setup. with the great highway closed only on weekends. the arrangement is set to end next

year. meanwhile, yes on prop k, supporters hosted their own rally today. they say the proposal would reduce car pollution near ocean beach by diverting cars to sunset boulevard nearby. >> we're talking about a section that's only an area with no on and off ramps for access into the sunset district, so the rest of the great highway will be open for business for cars 24 over seven. we're talking about this other section. and why not make it a park? because it could bring a renaissance to the sunset district and a boon to local business. >> the redesign would create other changes, including new access points to ocean beach and a new parking lot. two nasa astronauts who have been stuck on the international space station for nearly two months, won't be back on earth until february. sunita williams and barry butch wilmore were carried into space by a boeing starliner in early june. they were only supposed to be there a short time, but boeing's spacecraft

has run into technical problems. today, nasa announced they will remain in orbit until early next year, then hitch a ride back to earth on a space flight. >> space flight is risky, even at its safety. safest and so the decision to keep butch and sunny aboard the international space station and bring the boeing starliner home uncrewed is the result of a commitment to safety. >> the space mission is already scheduled, but it will be reconfigured to carry two astronauts instead of four, leaving two empty seats. for williams and wilmore to occupy on the flight home. breaking news from a busy san francisco neighborhood. officers are on the scene of an incident involving gunfire in the area of haight street and masonic avenue. officers responded to a call at about 245 this afternoon. they say a possible

palisades tahoe shared this video. they say it marks the 1st august dusting of snow since 2004. officials say august is typically one of the lake tahoe's warmest months. the resorts say the snow is a perfect reminder that ski season is less than 100 days away. as we talk snow, we are joined by spencer christian. of course, they remind us about ski season. that's right. snow in the lake tahoe area. well, this is a col, low pressure system that brought us rain today here in the bay area. >> obviously, it was a colder system when it got over to the sierra. here's a look at the atmospherics jr. the low pressure system kicking up some very active weather in northern california and over into nevada. and there there goes my clicker again. not working. okay, i'll do this manually. this uh- now it's working okay. you can see it's breezy all across the bay area right now with generally 15 to about 21 mile per hour wind speeds, and it's a bit warmer by

quite a few degrees across the entire region than at this time yesterday. so let's move along. take a live view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero 70 here in san francisco, mid 70s in oakland and hayward. we've got 80 at san jose, 76, redwood city, 68 at half moon bay. we've got some low clouds at the golden gate and it will get even cloudier going into the late night hours. temperatures in the low to mid 70s right now at santa rosa, petaluma and napa, 68 at fairfield. that's pretty low and upper 70s at concord and livermore. here's a view from emeryville looking back at san francisco. these are the forecast headlines overnight. we'll see patchy drizzle near the coast. maybe 1 or 2 sprinkles will push onshore, but it won't be very widespread. tomorrow sunnier and turning warmer than today which is not hard to do because today was quite cool. by august standards. then early next week, look for sizzling summer heat developing in our inland areas and even around the bay shoreline. it's going to be pretty hot as well. now for tonight. here's the forecast animation. notice those. notice those north bay showers sort of tapering off and moving away giving way to increasing low and mid-level clouds and some sprinkles

offshore. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper seconds. highs tomorrow up to about 70. around along the coast and some upper 70s to low 80s near the bay shoreline and up to about 90 or 92 in the warmest inland areas. but it's going to get even warmer. here's the accuweather seven day forecast mid 90s inland on monday tuesday, up to about 100 in the warmest inland spots. mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline. the heat eases just a bit on wednesday, but the more significant cooling won't come until the end of the week, when temperatures fall back into a more seasonal range. >> an absolutely brutal loss for the giants. last night. they led 5 to 1 going into the eighth inning, but tyler rogers set a franchise record by allowing six straight singles. the mariners tied it up and won it in the 10th. today, seattle native blake snell on the mound, trying to get a win in his hometown. a giants fan getting a selfie with snell as he warms up pregame.
