the holiday weekend. the day expected to be the busiest. good morning. it's monday, august 26th. >> let's start the check of our forecast with drew. >> got a really nice week ahead. sunshine. warm weather feels like summer the next couple of days. a live look outside the exploratorium cameras looking lovely, but we'll take you up to sutro tower. we have clear skies up above you. look at current sky conditions around the region. we're mainly clear. the only area that is reporting some sort of cloud right now a half moon bay. but along the coast today we will see a lot of sunshine. just going to be a very wonderful afternoon. temperatures were on the mild side at 60 right now in the city, 62 in oakland at 63, in san jose, 50 right now in the north bay. but later on we will get those temperatures above average. look at our inland forecast today. lots of sunshine out there. well into the 90s, mid and upper 90s for daytime highs. so it will be warm later on this afternoon. no heat advisories in effect, but certainly temperatures above average for this time of the year. look around the bay

shoreline is going to feel like summer after a weekend that started off with cooler weather on saturday. felt a little warmer yesterday, and now that warming trend continues. mid 80s for daytime highs along the coast. we do have cloud cover right now. we'll get brighter skies later on today, and temperatures will go into the mid and upper 60s for daytime highs. let's check in on those drive times. good morning amanda. >> good morning drew. yeah we're going to take a live look at the bay bridge. this is from our south beach cam. you can see things are moving at the limit. no issues, no backup, no metering. lights here at 501. that's the good news. so you'll get into the city with no problem. then i'll take you down to the south bay. this is our 101 880 crossing over crossing cam. nothing in your way here. no drama on your drive, which is great. and our overall map really reflecting the same. that's minus that typical slowdown along the altamont pass. let's get back to the anchors. >> developing news in the east bay. the search continues for the gunman who shot and killed a man at a berkeley homeless shelter. police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of seventh and harrison street

at about 5:00 last night. shelter residents say the victim lived at the shelter and was shot inside his room. it's still unclear what led to the gunfire. >> officers immediately began performing life saving measures. unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the location. >> other shelter residents were evacuated for a short time while police conducted the investigation. this is berkeley's fourth homicide of the year. >> happening tonight oakland is hosting the second of several town hall meetings to discuss public safety. community members have voiced concerns about how to keep people and property safe. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live following the story. so, gloria, can you tell us more about this event tonight? >> well, kumasi, the mayor and the police chief are expected to be there. they're among the city leaders that will be at tonight's town hall. and it's one of a series of these meetings. the first one was on friday as folks packed a church in oakland. the city's public safety leaders took questions, including about budget problems.

some residents spoke with abc seven about the importance of getting young people the support they need. the police chief calling on community leaders to help keep kids from turning to violence. embattled mayor shang tao answering a question about the police staffing shortage. here's how she answered one of the key pillars in regards to how we move forward with our budget. >> even though we had a huge deficit, was to ensure that we continue to have those police academies and some residents told abc seven they'd like to see more criminals be prosecuted to help reduce crime. >> the police chief said working with prosecutors at all levels is key, and the town hall tonight is at 530 in the evening at saint john's episcopal church. in addition, there are three more of these scheduled for this week live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> fighting is ramping up in the middle east, but not in gaza. israel and the lebanese militant group hezbollah are exchanging missile strikes with the blows

focused on southern lebanon. a man at the live desk tracking that for us. amanda. >> yeah, reggie. after an intense weekend of exchanging attacks and a short lived pause in airstrikes fighting between israel and hezbollah is reportedly back on. >> and while analysts believe a wider war in the region has been averted for now, the conflict on israel's northern border is ongoing, according to state media and witnesses. israeli strikes have targeted militant sites in southern lebanon. officials say the u.s. military was not involved, but they did help the idf track incoming attacks. on sunday, israel fired what they're calling preemptive strikes after detecting plans for an attack from hezbollah. the idf says they hit more than 40 militant sites in southern lebanon. hezbollah fired back, launching hundreds of drones and rockets into israeli territory. u.s. officials are now urging maximum restraint. >> we have been concerned about the conflict escalating into an all out regional war since

october 7th. what i believe now is that it is incumbent on all parties in the region to work towards de-escalation and stability. >> for now, the pentagon has ordered two aircraft carrier strike groups to remain in the region. the u.s. embassy in lebanon has told americans there to prepare a contingency plans and be ready to shelter in place for an extended period of time, but it seems the fighting up north hasn't impacted ceasefire talks between israel and hamas. the white house is showing optimism with the senior administration official saying negotiators are still in cairo, where discussions are continuing. back to you, reggie, and speaking about that, as ceasefire talks do continue, people are rallying in berkeley for the release of hamas hostages. >> a crowd gathered on the pedestrian overpass above 8-80, near university avenue, yesterday, waving flags and holding signs for hirsh goldberg-polin, the 23 year old, raised in berkeley, has been held hostage for more than ten months. hamas took him from the

music festival october seventh. on that overpass, people with family members held hostage tell us they want to make sure their loved ones aren't forgotten. a friend of the goldberg-polin family says the family is desperate for their son to be home. >> it's beyond urgency. it's beyond acceptable that this has gone on as long as it has, and the world needs to stand up and say enough is enough. >> goldberg, poland's parents, spoke at the democratic national convention last week, getting emotional as the crowd chanted bring them home! the local council on american-islamic relations sent us this, saying in part, everyone at every demonstration would agree too many people have been killed. the first step toward freeing the israeli and palestinian individuals being held captive is an arms embargo. and the next step is a permanent ceasefire. the biden-harris administration has the power to stop the violence and needs to do so now. end quote. >> bus service in san mateo county may be disrupted by a work stoppage starting today. the union, representing about 400 samtrans bus operators,

utility and other workers, is in a labor dispute with the county's transit district, rejecting the latest proposal. contract proposal. on friday, samtrans is advising customers to seek alternative transportation options today, maybe even tomorrow. the transit system also says the labor action could potentially affect school bus lines. samtrans says it will prioritize school service and paratransit service will not be interrupted today. >> bay area transportation officials will hold a meeting to discuss a plan to fend off a multi-billion dollar funding crisis. transit agencies are still grappling with the impact of remote work. fewer commuters means shrinking fare revenue. and there's the double whammy of sales tax measures expiring in santa clara county. contra costa county and san mateo county over the next 15 years. the metropolitan transportation commission is now considering a new sales tax proposal for the big operators, which could ultimately impact how much you pay. at today's meeting, they'll discuss some options for the

texas in general will have some afternoon thunderstorms around houston, san antonio, some afternoon thunderstorms across parts of the dakotas. but for the most part it is quiet across the midsection. to the east we go. just some pop-up variety afternoon thunderstorms. 1 or 2 of those could be severe in the northeast, and those afternoon thunderstorms as well. in parts of florida. back here at home, we have a warming trend getting underway here today. look at all this sunshine. no matter where you are today, it will be bright warm in the city at 74, even hotter in oakland at 80. and then it just feels like august summer warmth, 91 in san jose, 95. the high in walnut creek. so future weather, you'll feel that mild air first thing this morning. just the light jacket is all you'll need the next couple of hours as you head into the afternoon. it does get very warm. 90s inland 70s and seconds around the bay shoreline, and that warming trend continues the next couple of days. so 96 in concord today, 90 in napa. it's hot in the north bay, 92 in santa rosa, 91 in san jose, 80 in oakland, 74 in san francisco.

concern in massachusetts health officials there have found several mosquitoes carrying the disease, commonly known as triple e. one person has been infected. it's the first human case in the state since 2020. now, this virus can lead to some serious complications, including inflammation of the brain that can be deadly. at least ten communities in massachusetts are under high or critical risk of

the virus to prevent illness. some areas are now shutting down parks and fields at night. >> that includes getting rid of standing water that can be filling up in buckets, gutters, empty tires and toys, and making sure that you're protecting yourself as you're walking outside. given the fact that the climate is getting warmer, more and more mosquitoes are outside, so we have to make sure that we're mindful of that. >> cdc data shows no tripoli cases in california. in more than 20 years. >> happening today hundreds of criminal attorneys with the sacramento county da's office are set to go on strike. about 300 of them are walking off the job as they demand a pay increase from the county. criminal prosecutors, deputy public defenders and lawyers and child support services have been working without a contract since 2022. the planned walkout at one of the state's busiest courts will likely mean numerous delays of court hearings and other matters. >> we will show up for last day trials. the accused has a constitutional right to have it within a statutory period. we will show up for the end of that

statutory period. >> the union representing the attorneys is asking for a 5.5% pay raise. the county is only offering a cost of living adjustment. >> construction delays stink, but in this case, we literally mean it. neighbors in south vallejo are sick of rotten smells in their area, and clean air could be months away. the wastewater district in vallejo is in the middle of working to replace aging infrastructure at its wastewater treatment plant across mare island. back in march, it warned neighbors about a possible surge in smelliness from april to may. well, this august and vallejo can't seem to shake that smell. neighbors told the chronicle it's like a combination of rotting trash, meat, fish, rubber and sewer. ooh ooh. >> what else could it possibly be? >> what's left? thankfully, officials say it is not bad for your health. just your nose. they expect these scents to be

under control by early november. ooh starting today, workers in australia can now ignore work calls and emails outside of business hours, thanks to a new right to disconnect law. employers still will be able to contact workers, but now staff will have the right to not monitor, read or respond to those communications. any disputes over contact outside of business hours can be overseen by a federal workplace regulators. now here in the u.s, san francisco assemblyman matt haney proposed a similar bill earlier this year, making in california would have been the first state in the nation to give workers similar rights. that bill was held on submission, which means lawmakers intend to hold it indefinitely. >> free concerts have popped up across san francisco, either in their annual return or as new additions, and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us, there's a belief that these are pushing the city in the right direction.

afternoons. heading into the holiday weekend. for the labor day weekend, we are going to cool off, but temperatures will feel very pleasant. back to average with morning clouds to afternoon sunshine. just to give you an update on kona, it is now weakened to a tropical storm. the center of circulation is about 150 miles away from honolulu, and it continues to pull away from hawaii. so looking at the forecast later on this evening, it keeps moving off to the west 60mph, and then it will weaken as it heads deeper into the pacific. back here at home, we are seeing lots of sunshine today, mid 90s inland, upper 90s in some spots, lots of sunshine around the bay shoreline. dressed for summer temperatures going into the mid 80s for daytime highs along the coast. today we are dealing with some pockets of fog right now. we'll keep the clouds in for the next couple of hours and later in the afternoon it looks lovely. lots of sunshine mid and upper 60s. so highs today 74 in the city, but 92 in santa rosa, 82 in san mateo. hit about 91 in san jose 95 in livermore. the

episcopal church. there are three more meetings this week. there's one tomorrow, thursday and friday. >> number two, police are investigating after a man was shot and killed inside his room at a berkeley homeless shelter. officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area of seventh and harrison street at about 5:00 last night. police didn't give any details about a suspect or a motive. >> number three, you may need to find an alternate mode of transportation if you take samtrans. a labor dispute may cause service disruptions today, maybe even tomorrow. samtrans says it will prioritize school service and paratransit service won't be impacted. >> number four containment on the park fire near chico is now up to 79%. cal fire says recent rainfall has helped push that number up. the fire has burned 429,000 acres since it started. more than a month ago. >> and number five, a warming trend is underway here. expect a lot of sunshine for much of the week ahead. the hottest day this week will be tomorrow, but over the next couple of days certainly feeling like august.

in store for some warm days ahead. expect a lot of sunshine for much of the week and temperatures above average. a live look outside from our sutro tower camera pointed at the golden gate bridge. we have clear skies from this view. in fact, most areas have clear skies right now. the only location reporting any sort of cloud cover right now is half moon bay, and we are in store for a lot of sunshine today and some warm weather temperatures right now. it is already mild out there, low and mid 60s for a lot of us, from the city to oakland to san jose in the north bay right now, a little bit cooler in the 50s, but the north bay will go into the 80s and 90s later on this afternoon. so feeling warm today, looking at the inland forecast, it does get hot today. no heat advisories in effect, but certainly above average mid if not upper 90s for daytime highs. it is warm around the bay shoreline dressed for summer today. sunny skies. highs in the mid 80s. along the coast we are starting out with some cloud cover. we'll turn to brighter skies this afternoon and those daytime highs will feel nice. we'll go into the mid if not upper 60s later on today.

among those scheduled to be at tonight's meeting are oakland's mayor, police chief and fire chief. and members of the community will have a chance to ask some questions. the first of the series of town hall meetings was on friday was at beth eden baptist church. that church was packed. mayor shengtao and the police chief, floyd mitchell, were among those taking questions, including about the budget and public safety. some residents told abc seven they'd like to see more criminals be prosecuted to help reduce crime. the police chief said that working with prosecutors at all levels is key. he said they'll continue working with state prosecutors, their attorney general and federal prosecutors when crimes rise to that level. residents also talked about getting young people the support they need. the chief called on community leaders to help keep kids from turning to violence. >> they're the elders of our communities and the mothers of our community that know that can help us pull these kids aside and say, hey, there's a better way. >> mayor tao was asked about the

to arson charges. >> we have new details about a deadly shooting at a sideshow in vallejo, resulting in a police pursuit and a confiscated python the sideshow happened at louis brown road and b.w. williams drive early saturday morning. officers believe a man was shot and killed in a car, although it's not clear if he was part of the sideshow. the search continues for the suspect. according to the chronicle, police say there were more than 20 gunshots during the sideshow that involved about 500 vehicles. while investigating, police say someone inside a cadillac shined a laser pointer at an officer on the ground and a chp helicopter. law enforcement chased that car and arrested the driver in hercules. they also cited three passengers and confiscated this. a ten foot long python found in the car. >> the oakland unified school district board will be voting

this week on what could become a historic contract extension for the district's superintendent. the vote is set for wednesday. if the contract is approved, kyla johnson trammell will continue serving as superintendent for another three years, which would make her the longest serving superintendent in the district's history. with ten years in charge. before. before her, used superintendents had not served more than five years. since 1970. >> declining enrollment is hitting school budgets hard. a new study shows california spent $4 billion on so-called ghost students who have left districts trying to soften the blow. the report, out of the libertarian reason foundation, looked at the impact school funding changes had to ease the cost of shrinking student counts in the 2020 to 2023 school year. the study says two bay area school districts got some of the most money in the state. san francisco unified received $42 million paying for the education of 4000 more students than the district actually has. west contra costa unified got $39

million for 3700. ghost students. the state's largest school district, la unified, received the most money. >> the political fight over the future of san francisco's great highway continues. the southern part of the highway is closing because of erosion, but it's going to be up to residents whether to close a two mile stretch between sloat boulevard and lincoln way. prop k on the november ballot is sparking this debate. voters will decide whether to keep the roads open or if the that area into an oceanside park. one of the main concerns is how the change might impact traffic in the nearby neighborhood. but supporters of the ballot say the data does not support the concerns. >> the city has studied this multiple times, and the data don't bear out that there will be a traffic concern. sunset arterial, which is a nearby six lane road, can more than absorb the traffic. we've seen. >> the city has already shut down a portion of the freeway to cars on weekends, and holidays. the plans for the park include a
