we're into the 90s, mid if not upper 90s with lots of sunshine out there. no heat advisories in effect, but it will feel quite warm this afternoon. it's warm around the bay shoreline too. it's going to be a sunny day, which means we warm fast this morning. by the afternoon, temperatures in the mid, if not the upper 80s. later on today and then around the bay shoreline, it's warm, but the coast will be a little bit cooler. some clouds right now giving way to brighter skies this afternoon. daytime highs along the coast in the mid and upper 60s. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times this morning? >> hi, drew. things are certainly starting to fill in on the san mateo bridge. of course, the crowded commute is headed westbound. you can see from the toll plaza into foster city. that commute will take you about 11 minutes. and then we do have a commuter alert. ace train one is running about ten minutes late. however bart and caltrain seem to be doing fine. i'll take you down to the south bay. this is our 87 cam in san jose looking good for south bay commuters going north and south. our overall map showing you a pretty clear and calm commute. of course, minus that typical slowdown along the altamont

pass. let's get back to the desk. >> developing news in the east bay. the search continues this morning for the person responsible for a deadly shooting at a berkeley homeless shelter. police responded to a call of shots fired in the area at seventh and harrison street at about 5:00 last night. shelter residents say the victim lived at the shelter and was shot inside his room. it's still unclear what led to that gunfire. >> officers immediately began performing life saving measures. unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the location. >> other shelter residents were evacuated for a short time while police conducted their investigation. this is berkeley's fourth homicide of the year. >> happening tonight. the city of oakland is hosting the second of several town hall meetings to discuss public safety. community members have voiced concerns about how to keep people and property safe. abc seven news reporter laura rodriguez is following the story and has more on what we can expect from the event tonight. gloria. good morning kumasi. >> the mayor and police chief are among the city leaders

expected to be at tonight's town hall. it's one of a series of these meetings. the first one was on friday as folks packed a church in oakland. the city's public safety leaders took questions, including about budget problems. some residents spoke with abc seven about the importance of getting young people the support they need. the police chief calling on community leaders to help keep kids from turning to violence. embattled mayor shane tao, answering a question about the police staffing shortage. here's how she answered one of the key pillars in regards to how we move forward with our budget, even though we had a huge deficit, was to ensure that we continue to have those police academies. some residents told abc seven they'd like to see more criminals be prosecuted to help reduce crime. the police chief said working with prosecutors at all levels is key. the town hall tonight is at 530 in the evening at saint john's episcopal church. in addition, there are three more of these scheduled for this week. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news.

>> thanks, gloria. fighting is ramping up in the middle east, but not in gaza. israel and the lebanese militant group hezbollah are exchanging missile strikes with the blows focused on southern lebanon. a man is at the live desk tracking that for us. amanda. yeah, reggie. >> after an intense weekend of exchanging attacks and a short lived pause in airstrikes fighting between israel and hezbollah is reportedly back on. and while analysts believe a wider war in the region has been averted for now, the conflict on israel's northern border is ongoing. according to state media and witnesses, israeli air strikes have targeted militant sites in southern lebanon, and officials say the u.s. military was not involved. but they did help the idf track incoming attacks. on sunday, israel fired what they're calling preemptive strikes after detecting plans for an attack by hezbollah. the idf says they hit more than 40 militant sites in southern lebanon. hezbollah fired back, launching hundreds of drones and rockets into israeli territory. u.s. officials are now urging

maximum restraint. >> we have been concerned about the conflict escalating into an all out regional war since october seventh. what i believe now is that it is incumbent on all parties in the region to work towards de-escalation and stability. >> reporter for now, the pentagon has ordered two aircraft carrier strike groups to remain in the region. the u.s. embassy in lebanon has told americans there to prepare contingency plans and be ready to shelter in place for an extended period of time, but it seems the fighting up north hasn't impacted ceasefire talks between israel and hamas. the white house is showing optimism with a senior administration official saying negotiators are still in cairo, where discussions are continuing. back to you. reggie. >> all right. thanks, amanda. as cease fire talks do continue between israel and hamas, people are rallying in berkeley for the release of hamas hostages. a crowd gathered on the pedestrian overpass above 8-80, near

university avenue yesterday, waving flags and holding signs for hirsh goldberg-polin, the 23 year old, raised in berkeley, has been held hostage for more than ten months. hamas took him from the music festival october 7th. on the overpass, people with family members held hostage tell us they want to make sure their loved ones aren't forgotten. a friend of the goldberg-polin family says they are desperate for their son to be home. >> it is beyond urgency. it's beyond acceptable that this has gone on as long as it has, and the world needs to stand up and say enough is enough. >> goldberg, poland's parents, spoke at the democratic national convention last week, getting emotional to chants of bring them home. the local council on american-islamic relations sent us this, saying in part, everyone at every demonstration would agree too many people have been killed. the first step toward freeing the israeli and palestinian individuals being held captive is an arms embargo. and the next step is a permanent cease fire. the biden-harris administration has the power to

stop the violence and needs to do so now. >> bus service in san mateo county may be disrupted by a work stoppage starting today. the union, representing about 400 samtrans bus operators, utility and other workers, is in a labor dispute with the county's transit district, rejecting the latest contract proposal. on friday, sam trans is advising customers to seek alternative transportation options today and maybe even tomorrow. the transit system also says labor action could potentially affect school bus lines. sam tran says it will prioritize school service and paratransit service will not be disrupted today. >> bay area transportation officials will hold a meeting to discuss a plan to fend off a multi-billion dollar funding crisis. transit agencies are still grappling with the impact of remote work. fewer commuters means shrinking fare revenue. and there's the double whammy of sales tax measures expiring in santa clara county. contra costa county and san mateo county over the next 15 years. the metropolitan transportation commission is now considering a number of tax measures as a way

to make up funding. at today's meeting, they'll discuss some options for the 2026 ballot. >> an alaska airlines flight from seattle to oakland had to be diverted minutes after taking off because of an engine failure. it happened over the weekend. the chronicle is reporting flight as 1240 changed course after about five minutes when it departed yesterday from seattle. pilots of the boeing 737 made an emergency landing after one of the aircraft's engines shut down. it's not immediately clear what caused the problem. the airline says maintenance crews were looking into the issue and hailed the pilots and flight crew for landing safely. now we're looking at sfo this morning. live, quiet now, but later this week, travel is definitely expected to pick up for labor day. more than 17 million people are set to travel between thursday and next wednesday, with the busiest day expected to be friday, august 30th. tsa says on that day, it expects to screen nearly 2.86 million

the unhoused out of the city. our media partners at the sf standard report county supervisors are dismayed with humboldt being one of the top three destinations requested by people using the journey home program. supervisors drafted a letter last week asking for details on the program to san francisco mayor london breed. it turns out humboldt is also sending unhoused on busses to san francisco. documents show humboldt's relocation program sent people to the city at least four times between october and march. county supervisors say they have concerns with shifting

people from county to county. we've reached out to mayor breed's office to see if she has received the letter. we have not yet heard back. a rare but deadly disease spread by mosquitoes is causing concern in massachusetts. health officials there have found several mosquitoes carrying the disease, commonly known as triple e. one person has been infected. it's the first human case in the state since 2020. the virus can lead to serious complications, including inflammation of the brain, which can be deadly. at least ten communities in massachusetts are under high or critical risk of the virus to prevent illness. some areas are now shutting down parks and fields at night. >> that includes getting rid of standing water that can be filling up in buckets, gutters, empty tires and toys, and making sure that you're protecting yourself as you're walking outside. given the fact that the climate is getting warmer, more and more mosquitoes are outside, so we have to make sure that we're mindful of that. >> cdc data shows no triple e cases in california over the past 20 years. free concerts

have popped up across san francisco, either in their annual return or as new additions. and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us, there's a belief that the city is now going the right direction with these concerts. >> the sights and sounds of san francisco's stern grove music festival. we really want to be able to bring free live music to the community and make it accessible. for the past, nearly 90 years, serving up head turning headliners like chaka khan for free. in today's world, concert tickets are so expensive and it's really hard for some people to be able to go see these amazing musicians. >> and we are trying to break that down and be able to provide that to people. >> the festival, drawing in roughly 90,000 people to the city each year from across the bay area and beyond. >> people are struggling right now financially, and so they might not want to splurge on entertainment. but it's important for human beings to socialize with one another and enjoy the arts and the order of outside lands. >> the city's largest music

days it is going to be very warm out there. here's a look at today's forecast. inland lots of sunshine. we're into the mid and upper 90s for daytime. highs around the bay shoreline mid 80s and along the coast right now a little bit of cloud cover giving way to sunshine this afternoon. and highs in the mid and upper 60s. so today dress for summer. 90 in napa, 92 in santa rosa, 95 in livermore, 91 in san jose, a warm 80 in oakland. it feels warm in the city today at 74, we'll hit about 88. in fremont overnight tonight, we'll keep those clear skies in most areas, limited fog along the coast and overnight lows generally in the 50s. now tomorrow afternoon it is the hottest day of the week. we do expect our inland temperatures to hit about 100 degrees. a little bit of minor cooling on wednesday, but those temperatures do remain above average through the end of the week. here's the accuweather seven day forecast the next seven days. view a warming trend is underway here today. it is just hot inland. tomorrow, even into wednesday, the heat begins to ease by thursday, and then over the weekend we'll have

australia can now ignore work calls and emails outside of business hours. all thanks to this new right to disconnect law. employers still will be able to contact workers, but now staff will have the right to not monitor, not read, or even respond to those communications. any disputes over contact outside business hours can be overseen by federal workplace regulators. now, here in the u.s, san francisco assemblyman matt haney proposed a similar bill earlier this year. california would have been the first state in the nation to give workers similar rights. that bill was bill was held on submission, which essentially means lawmakers intend to hold it indefinitely. the stars of the supremes at earle's all you can eat had a fun reunion at the film's hollywood premiere. aunjanue ellis taylor, who is from san francisco. sanaa lathan and uzo aduba all on hand to celebrate with the cast. the movie is based on the best selling novel by the same name and takes you through the lives of three best friends who call

mid 80s if not the upper 80s and along the coast right now we do have a fair amount of cloud cover, but we will get brighter skies this afternoon and those daytime highs mid if not upper 60s later on this afternoon. let's check in on those drive times with amanda. good morning. >> good morning drew. yeah we're going to start off with the current look at our drive times. you can see the typical slowdown from tracy to dublin will take you about 57 minutes. san rafael to san francisco 16 minutes. and then that drive from antioch to concord is at 26 minutes. then i'll take you to albany. all the right lanes are blocked. traffic is passing in the left lane only. and this is because of a two vehicle crash. eastbound 80. before buchanan street. there is a minor backup now. no major issues here right now. so that's the good news. just be aware. emeryville. of course. headlights headed westbound. it is crowded for those headed toward the bay bridge. still not too bad, though. that typical slowdown that we do see. i'll leave you here at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is crowded back up to the foot of the maze. back

to you. >> thanks, amanda. new this morning, an suv riddled with bullet holes crashed in front of an oakland kfc restaurant just in the last two hours. look at this video. it happened near the intersection of 73rd avenue and international boulevard. this is in east oakland. it's not clear where a shooting could have taken place or how the car ended up like this at the kfc. we also don't know if anybody was hurt. we have reached out to oakland police for more information, and we will update you as soon as we have. >> that shooting comes on the same day oakland's mayor and police chief hosts a forum on public safety. it's the second of five town hall meetings to discuss several issues the city is facing, including crime. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is here with more on these meetings. >> good morning reggie. among those scheduled to be at tonight's meeting, oakland's mayor, police chief and the fire chief. members of the community will have a chance to ask some questions. the first of the series of town hall meetings was on friday. it was at beth eden baptist church. that church was

evening at saint john's episcopal church. live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. your voice, your vote. both presidential campaigns gearing up for swing state tours this week. and amanda, each campaign hoping to capitalize off of some recent developments in the presidential race. >> yeah. kumasi. that certainly seems to be the hope the harris campaign says it has had a surge in fundraising coming off the dnc. the campaign says it raised $82 million this past week during the convention. they also raised more than half $1 billion since president joe biden stepped aside last month. vice president kamala harris and governor tim walz will take a bus tour across georgia this week. meanwhile, former president donald trump will tour several battleground states. he's expected to visit michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. this comes off his latest endorsement from former independent candidate robert f kennedy jr. kennedy suspended his campaign on friday, and despite the endorsement polling from our partner, fivethirtyeight shows kennedy's backing of mr. trump

sideshow happened at louis brown road and b.w. williams drive early saturday morning. officers believe a man was shot and killed in a car. it's not clear if he was part of the sideshow. the search continues now for the suspect. according to the chronicle, police say there were more than 20 gunshots during the sideshow. it involved about 500 vehicles. while investigating, police say someone inside a cadillac shined a laser pointer at an officer on the ground and a chp helicopter. law enforcement chased that car. they arrested the driver in hercules. they cited three passengers, and they found this. a ten foot python in the car. >> the oakland unified school district board will be voting this week on what could become a historic contract extension for the district's superintendent. the vote is set for wednesday. if that contract is approved, kyla johnson trammell would continue serving as superintendent for another three years, and that would make her the longest serving

superintendent in the district's history with ten years in charge. oakland unified hasn't had a superintendent serve more than five years since 1970. >> a new study shows california gave an extra $4 billion to school districts struggling the worst with decline. the most, i should say, with declining enrollment. the report by reason foundation looked at the impact school funding policy has on easing the financial burden caused by shrinking classrooms in the 20 2223 school year, two bay area school districts got some of the most money in the state. san francisco unified received $42 million, paying for the education of 4000 more students in the district actually had west contra costa unified, got $39 million for 3700, so-called ghost students. state funding for education has been boosted by recent state policies that aim to protect district budgets from unexpected enrollment declines, but the group behind the study argues the money could be put to better use.
