that's her. >> she asked for the bag, and somebody gave it to me tonight. >> a candidate for oakland city council is speaking out after a bag containing campaign donations was stolen during a rally yesterday afternoon. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> it happened to charlene wong, who is running for oakland's at large seat today. >> abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with her and explains how this experience exemplifies the change that she wants to make. >> if elected. yeah. that's her. >> she asked for the bag and somebody gave it to me. >> shut up. choice words thrown as this woman refuses to give up that orange bag in it is about $1,000 worth of campaign donations for charlene wong. >> i, you know, very much try to have a de-escalatory conversation with her to try to convince her to hand over the bag, offer her, you know, a warm meal at the grocery store, give her even money in exchange for the bag. but that did not work out. >> wong is running for oakland city council at large. >> blessing bag up. can we just

get the bag, please? >> when i'm done, she said. this woman came by after their campaign rally and took the bag. her and her staff tried to get the woman to politely hand the bag back, but that woman wouldn't budge. >> she did start getting agitated and started like throwing food and whatnot. >> her staff outreach to try and calm the woman down, but they weren't available. after the woman started threatening charlene and her staff, they decided they should call oakland police. only problem police never showed up. >> they said that there were 250 calls ahead of us and, they said that they would actually come by to take a report afterwards. they still have not come by and it still hasn't happened yet. >> we reached out to oakland police and asked them if they ever responded. they asked me to be more specific about the location, but they never replied back. part of the platform for her candidacy is focusing on increasing public safety by building more housing for the homeless. a platform where she now has a firsthand experience.

>> i'm not angry at her or anything like that. however, you know, i think this is yet another example of how we don't have a first responder service. there was just we were left. i was left to fend for myself. in essence, she says, whoever gets elected to the at large role should focus on reducing incidents like this one. >> in oakland, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> in just about half an hour, oakland residents are invited to express their concerns about violence in the city. at a town hall meeting with mayor shengtao and police chief floyd mitchell. it's all part of a series of community meetings that kicked off on friday. the two, as well as other city leaders, took questions about police staffing, budget problems and working with prosecutors to see cases through. tonight's town hall starts at 530 at saint john's episcopal church in the montclair district. tomorrow's. is at fremont high school in the fruitvale. thursdays will be held at allen temple baptist church. that is in deep east oakland. and on friday, there will be a town hall at oakland asian cultural center, which is in chinatown. >> and with theft being a big

concern for a lot of people, voters in california will be asked if they want increased sentences for certain theft and crimes. opponents of proposition 36 say it could lead to mass incarceration, but some san mateo county supporters believe it would bring benefits. here's abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey. >> elizabeth walker lives with the pain every day of losing her 17 year old son, collin, to fentanyl laced cocaine. she hopes prop 36 would make it so no other parents will have to feel the same loss. >> my son was murdered. someone put poisoning into what he should not have been taking. but if you are an alcoholic and went into a bar, you shouldn't be ordering a drink. but do you deserve to die because someone puts poisoning in your drink? absolutely not. >> prop 36 proponents say it will help families like the walkers by enacting stricter penalties for drug dealers. if it were passed when collin died, the dealer could have faced murder charges due to his death.

the proposition is seen as a reform to prop 47, which reduced hard drug possession and theft penalties by holding drug dealers and repeat retail and smash-and-grab thieves accountable. leaders in san mateo county are calling on their colleagues to support the measure by voting tomorrow to endorse proposition 36, the san mateo county board of supervisors can send a clear message that san mateo county board of supervisors join san francisco's mayor and san jose's mayor in supporting a brighter and safer future for this region. not everyone in san mateo county is on board with this call for support. >> however, i feel that the leadership needs to address the root causes of the problems. the cost of living in san mateo county, as well as in the state of california, rather than rather than incarcerating them. >> we need to address it from a medical perspective, not from a jail perspective. >> no, on 36 advocates say this takes california back to the failures of the 80s and 90s in the war. on drugs. the anti-recidivism coalition chief executive officer sam lewis says it will cost california billions

in prison fees when people should be given more opportunities to reform. >> instead, we're trying to find faster ways to lock people up and go back to mass incarceration. that's not going to work for us. like we're criminalizing homelessness. we're criminalizing poverty. is that what america is about? is that what california is about? >> this has been a contentious issue in california with many democratic leaders speaking against prop 36, including governor gavin newsom, who has criticized supporters. the san mateo county supervisors will vote on whether or not to endorse prop 36 at their meeting tuesday morning in san mateo county. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> now to the race for the white house. former president trump is out in full force this week, starting near washington, then hitting several crucial swing states. this as vice president kamala harris continues to ride the energy from the democratic national convention. abc news reporter em nguyen has the latest from washington, dc. >> thank you. former president trump and battleground michigan today, addressing the national guard association in detroit. >> our country is being

longest war. her campaign reporting it's raised more than half $1 billion. last month, 82 million came in just last week during the democratic national convention. the harris campaign says she's focusing much of this week on debate preparation ahead of her first face off with trump. >> you know, you can't cram knowledge into your head for, you know, 30 years of knowledge in one week. you have to know your subject. and i think i know my subject. >> in addition to michigan, trump is storming the key swing states of wisconsin and pennsylvania this week. our latest polling shows harris leading in those states, with the exception of georgia, where she and running mate tim walz are set to crisscross on a bus tour. and when abc news washington. >> and do not forget the debate is tuesday, september 10th, right here on abc seven. our coverage begins at 5:00 in the east bay. >> police are searching for a driver who hit a child in a stroller, then took off. the child went to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. this crash happened about 815

this morning in berkeley, near dozier street and alcatraz avenue. a couple blocks south of the ashby bart station. a berkeley police say the person was pushing the child in a stroller when the crash happened. the driver took off southbound on dover street. neighbors told us they heard the whole thing. >> i heard a crash. i heard a scream. i heard a baby cry. and i looked out and i saw the stroller in the on the ground in the street. >> police say the driver is a man, but they don't have any other details about him or his car. again, the child who was hit is expected to be okay. >> thank goodness prosecutors in the east bay say they've identified more victims of a swim coach accused of molesting children, as a suspect seeks to get out of jail. our partners at the bay area news group report. tyler livingston is trying to be released because the jail apparently refuses to follow his dietary restrictions. the newspaper reports the 25 year old from emeryville is facing 15 felony counts accused of

molesting six boys younger than ten. berkeley police arrested him last month. livingston was a swim instructor throughout the bay area, and also worked as a substitute teacher and babysitter. the bay area news group reports livingston is asking a judge to let him stay in his parents home in pleasant hill, saying the jail in dublin is serving him milk and eggs when he's allergic. he is set for a bail hearing tomorrow afternoon. >> a tiktok video has led to an investigation into a 20 year veteran of the alameda county fire department, who is accused of using a racial slur. >> the firefighter was off duty at the time of the incident. it's come to our attention that some language was used during the interaction that does not align with the values and standards we uphold as an organization. such behavior is not representative of who we are or the department or our values. we strive to embody every day. >> now this viral tiktok video allegedly shows the firefighter off duty again at the time making a racist comment during a road rage incident. we spoke

with the other driver. >> i would like to say, you know, we get respected. i mean, everybody gets respected, not just browns, blacks, whites, yellow, purple. it doesn't it doesn't matter. you know, we all need to get respected. and, we were living together. we, you know, we're not living apart. we're all living together. >> the fire chief says the department is taking steps to improve their relationship with the community by doing outreach and having members undergo sensitivity training. he says disciplinary action will be taken against the firefighter. depending on the outcome of that investigation. the president of the firefighters union issued a response to the investigation, saying in part, quote, we are deeply troubled by the remarks made in the video. the comments made are contrary to our mission to serve all members of our community. the union says it will fully cooperate with the investigation. the san francisco bay area office of the council

on american-islamic relations care also released a statement reading, quote, we welcome acf's decision to investigate the incident and urge a comprehensive and transparent process with decisive action to ensure this type of behavior is not tolerated within their ranks. >> now to breaking news out of the south bay tonight, where there is a major mess on the freeway after a bad crash, all northbound lanes of 85 are blocked. this is happening near 87 in san jose. this is close to oak ridge mall starting around 340 today. the chp started receiving calls about a wrong-way driver on 85. it appears that driver crashed into a tesla. we do know at least two people in the white tesla are dead. the driver of the pickup was going the wrong way. now traffic on 85 is being sent onto 87. you're looking at video from sky seven. there is no estimate as for when that freeway will reopen, it will likely take some time. we do have a crew on the scene. we will bring you updates

grocery store is making sure students don't go hungry anymore. >> abc seven news reporter louis pena went to today's opening of the first free grocery store inside a school on the west coast. >> just hours before dinner, parents jessica mattos and gabriella hernandez are going grocery shopping. i love to come back and get some more, but this is not your typical store. >> three. two. one. yay! >> this is the first free grocery store inside a school on the west coast. all the food here is meant to feed students and families from mlk middle school in san francisco's bayview hunters point neighborhood. >> so once we identify those families who are interested in accessing this resource, they'll be on a schedule. they'll know when to come in. it's before school and after school based on their income. >> over 70% of families here qualify for free or reduced lunch. the school believes over 300 families could benefit from this market. >> la verdad es una gran gran

destroyed in the blaze. the district attorney added special allegations to the charges because several structures were burned. anderson faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted. >> california does have a new tool to fight wildfires from the sky. take a look. this is a c-130 hercules air tanker. it's capable of carrying 4000 gallons of fire retardant. it's also the fastest. and with the farthest range in the state's airborne fleet. cal fire is retrofitting seven c-130s to place throughout the state to make fire response faster. we definitely could always use that. >> we sure could. that's a terrific resource, too. it's a huge airplane. all right. let's talk about the weather as we head back to work and temperatures rise. >> yeah. after some wet weather over the weekend, we're ready for a warm up. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. i think we have that warm up, sandhya. we do indeed. and it's going to continue as we head into tomorrow. now, over the weekend. on saturday, we did get measurable rain for parts of the bay area, which is good from the fire weather perspective because it does add the moisture to the

fairfield. one of our hot spots. and 93 degrees right now in concord and livermore from our sutro tower camera. the sun is out tomorrow. summer sizzles with us overnight tonight. fog near the coast and bay. and for your holiday weekend, it is going to cool closer to average for this time of year. so today's high temperatures were in the mid 60s to mid 90s. so far. and we're going to be going up even more well above average by a good 5 to 10 degrees. so tonight at 620 you will notice temperatures are still in the 80s and 90s inland fog will be near the coast by 8.15, spreading across the bay tomorrow morning. we start out with the 50s and 60s and you will notice it warms up by the lunch hour. later on in the afternoon, you're already in the mid and upper 90s and eventually hitting low 100 seconds for our hot spots. so first thing out, the door, watch out for the fog. it may get compressed enough that it is dense in pockets along the coastline. 50s and 60s tomorrow afternoon. it's a warm to hot one for most of you. 91 in the south bay and santa clara
