>> also here, the david and goliath real estate battle going on in san francisco. >> from abc seven live breaking news. >> and that breaking news is a terrible crash in the south bay that has snarled traffic tonight. two people are dead after a crash with a wrong-way driver on 85. this is just north of 87, in san jose. all northbound lanes of 85 have been shut down there for about two hours now. this all started around 3.40 today when the chp started receiving calls about a pickup truck going the wrong way on 85. that driver then crashed into a tesla, killing two people inside. the driver who was going the wrong way has serious injuries. traffic on 85 is being sent onto 87. there is no estimate of when the freeway will reopen. obviously, it will take a lot of time as they work to clear this mess and do their investigation. for now, good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan

ashley. thanks for joining us. we'll move next to a contentious race for congress that just got a little bit more difficult. this is for the 16th congressional district seat. that's the one anna s-u has held for decades, representing parts of san mateo and santa clara counties. >> and now a federal election commission complaint has been filed against candidate evan lowe, accusing him of not reporting in-kind contributions. he'll face sam liccardo in november's general election. >> abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes is live, with more details on these accusations. and zach, the reaction. >> reporter yeah, the person who filed the complaint is the former fec chair and also an endorser of lowe's opponent, sam liccardo. now, lowe's campaign says liccardo is using his supporters to make false accusations. but the former fec chair tells me her support of liccardo has nothing to do with the complaint. heightened tensions in one of the most watched political campaigns, the race for the district 16 congressional seat between sam liccardo and evan lowe. now this weekend and raval, the former

federal election commission chair, has filed an fec complaint against evan lowe. >> someone in the campaign of sam liccardo asked me if i would take a look at what had happened. >> the complaint alleges that lowe's campaign did not disclose that it used the nonprofit's email list and email server as an in-kind contribution, an example given in the complaint shows an email sent in february with a link that directed users to a page hosted by nonprofit stand with asian americans. though raval is listed as an endorser on liccardo's website and acknowledged it, she said the complaint is not about that. >> my rationale for this has nothing to do with sam liccardo and my support of him, or any feeling particularly about evan lowe. what i care about is democratic process. >> lowe's campaign sent a statement saying sam liccardo is once again deploying his supporters to make false

accusations against our campaign and distract his own shady conduct. this is simply a case of a volunteer working in their personal capacity using the wrong hyperlink. the email list was purchased from the county registrar and reported by the campaign. liccardo's campaign issued a statement saying in part, quote, evan lowe will do anything to further his political career. the statement went on to bring up other allegations against lowe and say, quote, it's gotten so bad. barack obama's former fec chair is now calling him out. this all comes months after multiple candidates ran in the primary race for district 16. sam liccardo won first place by a wide margin. initially, evan lowe and joe simitian won second place in a tie until a recount request was made. that request was made by a former staffer. on liccardo's 2014 san jose mayoral campaign. liccardo's team did not claim a current association with that staffer. two fec complaints were filed against liccardo in the aftermath. as for the complaints against lowe, raval said she's leaving what happens next to the fec? >> they're the ones who will

have to investigate this, not m. >> now we did also hear from the nonprofit at the middle. in the middle of this stand with asian americans. it's called they sent us an email that said in part, it is a strictly nonpartisan organization, and that it did not provide email lists to the lowe campaign. and that it's against its policies to share subscribers information to external entities. right now live in the south bay bureau. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thank you for that. one of the most controversial statewide propositions on november's ballot aims to get tough on crime. among those supporting proposition 36 is elizabeth walker, whose son colin died after taking cocaine laced with fentanyl. proposition 36 would increase penalties for certain theft and drug crimes. it would have allowed murder charges to be filed against the person who sold colin. the drug. >> my son was murdered. someone put poisoning into what he should not have been taking. >> like we're criminalizing homelessness. we're criminalizing poverty. is that what america is about? is that

what california is about? >> proposition 36 would also make drug treatment mandatory to avoid prison time. tomorrow, san mateo county's board of supervisors is expected to officially support the measure. >> all right, on to the weather for a few minutes. after some fairly moderate temperatures, things are going to heat up this week. yeah, you could already start to feel it. >> we will even see some triple digit temperatures for a day. abc seven news meteorologist andy patel has our preview. sandhya. yeah. >> and ama and dan, we are taking a look at a live picture right now from our san jose camera. this is what you're going to be seeing more of, which is sunny skies. we did have some fog this morning and even into this afternoon. temperatures right now in the 60s, right around half moon bay. but you head inland around livermore. concord. you're already in the low 90s, and it's only going to get hotter there. santa rosa, 88 degrees. 86. right now in vallejo. 82, in mill valley. taking a look at the 24 hour temperature change. most areas are actually running higher than where they were by nine degrees in livermore, up six in san jose. we go hour by

hour, and tonight it's still going to be warm at 715 away from the coastline, fog will be pretty much limited to the coast and around the bay. and by noontime we're feeling that warmth. inland areas in the 80s. by the early afternoon, we're in the 90s. and some 100 seconds will be showing up. so when you look at the temperature trend for santa rosa, 85 is the average tomorrow, ten degrees above average at 95. and then those temperatures will slowly slide as we head towards the holiday weekend. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast in the accuweather seven day ama. >> all right. thank you sandhya. we'll check back. take a look at the work that cal fire has done on this old coast guard airplane. the c-130 hercules plane was transformed into cal fire's newest air tanker. it will be the fastest of the department's airborne fleet. it's capable of carrying 4000 gallons of fire retardant. cal fire will eventually have seven c-130s placed across the state for faster response. >> a tiktok video has led to an investigation into a 20 year veteran of the alameda county fire department, who's accused of using a racial slur.

>> the firefighter was off duty at the time of the incident. it's come to our attention that some language was used during the interaction that does not align with the values and standards we uphold as an organization. >> the viral tiktok video shows the firefighter using racist language during a road rage incident. the firefighter was again off duty at the time and we spoke to the other driver. >> we all need to get respected and uh. we're living together. we you know, we're not living apart. we're all living together. >> the fire chief says disciplinary action will be taken against the firefighter, depending on the outcome of an investigation. the firefighter is currently on paid administrative leave. >> burning man just started and it has already turned tragic. a woman died yesterday morning on day one of the festivities. she's been identified as 39 year old kendra frazier. emergency responders tried to revive her after she was found unresponsive, but they couldn't.

the local sheriff says her death is under investigation pending results of an autopsy and toxicology screening. this is the third year in a row that someone has died at burning man. >> new developments. a man faces charges tonight in connection with a fatal shooting in dublin. police say they arrested a 38 year old man at a walmart parking lot in barstow. that's in san bernardino county. the shooting happened friday at the emerald park apartments complex on hacienda drive. that's again in dublin now. a man was found shot in the head nearby. james dougherty elementary school was placed on lockdown during the investigation. happening now a town hall meeting for people to express their concerns about violence in oakland. mayor sheng tao and police chief floyd mitchell are taking part in a series of meetings. the first one was last friday. this evening's town hall is at saint john's episcopal church in the montclair district. tomorrow's. is at fremont high school in fruitvale. thursday's will be held at the allen temple baptist church in east oakland. and on

friday, there will be a town hall at the oakland asian cultural center in chinatown. maybe one of those locations is near you. >> several legacy businesses in san francisco's fillmore district say they are being pushed out after decades in the neighborhood. it comes after a billionaire recently bought up the buildings where they rent space. abc seven news reporter tim johns tells you about an effort to try to stop it. >> walk down fillmore street in the heart of san francisco, and you'll be greeted by several familiar businesses, some of which have been here for decades. but that may soon be changing. since the start of the year, a billionaire venture capitalist has bought several of the buildings in this area, and many of these business owners say they're being forced to leave. >> we're scared. we don't want it. we don't want to lose everything. >> steve amano is the co-owner of tanishi, a sushi bar that was opened by his japanese immigrant parents back in 1978. amano feels they're being strong. armed into closing next month. >> i signed that termination agreement because of, you know, they were we were they were

saying things about, you know, we're we're going to charge you this and, you know, all these numbers that they were firing at us like, we have to we'd have to pay. we're like, oh, that that was freaking us out. >> like across the street at la mediterranee, van der bedrossian also shared his story. his restaurant was opened by his father, a lebanese immigrant, around the same time as taniguchi. their lease isn't up until may, but der bedrosian says the new landlord has shown no interest in negotiating a new lease. >> we have 20 plus employees who work here. we have a very strong following here in the community, and we want to have clarity about our future. >> the buildings that both taniguchi and la mediterranee operate out of have been bought by entities connected to venture capitalist neil meta. meta could not be reached for comment, but one of his business associates, nightlife entrepreneur cody allen, sent us this statement. our investment in upper fillmore has been made on behalf of our nonprofit sf reserve foundation, with the objective of bringing in more small businesses rather than introducing chain or

formula retail tenants. our foundation's aim is to bring in an even wider variety of food and beverage operators to revitalize the iconic clay theater and to restore fillmore storefronts. on monday, supervisor and mayoral candidate aaron peskin held a news conference on fillmore street. peskin announcing a plan to introduce legislation making it harder to kick out legacy businesses. >> it's important for the family, in this case, a multi-generation family that has been here for literally almost a half a century. it is important for the community that sees this as a gathering space is important to the fabric of a neighborhood. >> welcome news for people like steve amano, who says while he's trying to find a new location for taniguchi, he doesn't know what will come next. >> i mean, we have no option. there's no other option. you know, but we're not going to lay down like, i can't. like, we have to keep working now in order to help with the potential move. >> amano says he has set up a gofundme page. he tells me he

hungry anymore. abc seven news reporter louis pena went to today's opening of the first free grocery store inside a school anywhere on the west coast. >> just hours before dinner, parents jessica matos and gabriela hernandez are going grocery shopping. i love to come back and get some more, but this is not your typical store. >> three. two. one. yay! >> this is the first free grocery store inside a school on the west coast. all the food here is meant to feed students and families from mlk middle school in san francisco's bayview hunters point neighborhood. >> so once we identify those families who are interested in accessing this resource, they'll be on a schedule. they'll know when to come in. it's before school and after school based on their income. >> over 70% of families here qualify for free or reduced lunch. the school believes over 300 families could benefit from this market. >> la verdad es una gran gran

you can expect tonight at 7:00. inland areas are still clear and warm in the upper 80s by 9 p.m. in the 70s, and then dropping down to the mid 70s right around the bay at 7:00. you're a mild mid 70s, eventually coming down into the 60s with some areas of fog forming late tonight along the coastline. low 60s with some fog and then it will get a little bit thicker as we head towards 11 p.m. high pressure is starting to build in. you can pretty much see the signature of this as we head towards tomorrow. those temperatures will rise some more. today's highs were in the mid 60s to the mid 90s and as i mentioned earlier today we had some fog around, not just in the morning but well into the afternoon. as we look at live doppler seven, all is quiet unlike saturday where we actually had some showers and drizzle. a live view. clear skies looking back toward sutro tower from emeryville, 69, in the city. it is 77, in oakland. pretty nice in san jose at 87 degrees and 63 in half moon bay. from our exploratorium camera. seeing

company was ready to launch its newest mission, called polaris dawn, tomorrow. but there's a helium leak that needs to be checked. the earliest the falcon nine rocket could launch is wednesday. it will be a nail biting, five day trek into orbit with a crew of four private astronauts traveling into earth's radiation belts, hoping to conduct the first ever commercial spacewalk. three flights aimed to test new technologies that can help advance musk's goal of seeing humans live and work on other planets. >> spacex is going to help two stranded astronauts return to earth. butch wilmore and suni suni williams arrived at the international space station in june. the trip was supposed to last eight days. well, it's turning into eight months. the boeing starliner. they launched on was has been plagued by

problems. so nasa is turning to spacex to get the astronauts home. this is set to happen in february, long after months after they were supposed to be back. but of course, safety is the primary concern. >> absolutely. while southern california researchers are working to feed astronauts on the space station by helping them grow their own food. >> reporter leticia juarez, from our sister station in los angeles, has a look at the future of food and liftoff. >> space. the final frontier for agriculture. >> it's very expensive to send food up to the astronauts, so ideally we want them to be able to grow some of their own food. >> as nasa plans missions to the moon and mars, scientists like doctor robert jinkerson, a chemical and environmental engineer at uc riverside, is researching how to grow plants and fungal based food using artificial photosynthesis. >> our work is focused on is how do we actually grow plants without light, and try to reduce and minimize the amount of light instead of sunlight?

>> jinkerson has managed to grow tomatoes using acetate, a carbon based alternative energy source. you might notice the plant's unusual small size. that's due to the work of doctor martha orozco cardenas, who runs the plant transformation research center at ucr. >> he was quite surprised about how small was the plant that i produced by genetically engineer her genetically engineered tomato is designed to produce fruit in small spaces, so it can be a food source for astronauts on the international space station. >> currently, the research is being evaluated at nasa's kennedy space center. the next phase in the research project will be taking seeds of tomato plants like these and sending them to space to see how they perform. >> astronauts are going to harvest the fruit and then the seeds, replant them and then grow another batch of tomatoes. and this will be the first seed to seed to seed experiment in space. >> but tomatoes aren't the only thing on the menu. jinkerson and his team have developed a

after a wrong way driver hit another car, killing two people. now this all started about 340 today when the chp started receiving calls about a pickup truck going the wrong way on 85. ten minutes and several miles later, the chp says the pickup

hit a tesla, killing the two people inside. the driver who was going the wrong way is in the hospital with major injuries. >> so there were several calls that were coming in, describing a white pickup truck that was traveling the wrong way. our officers were getting in position and trying to be in position to stop that vehicle prior to the point of the crash. >> and the chp says it's not clear yet whether the driver was under the influence. traffic on 85 is being sent onto 87. the chp says the freeway will be closed for at least two more hours. >> some tense moments as a candidate for oakland city council campaigning on safety and addressing homelessness saw those challenges firsthand. >> someone stole a bag filled with campaign donations over the weekend. charlene wong is running for oakland's at large seat. >> and today, abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with her about the crime and how it reflects on the challenges she hopes to tackle in oakland. yeah, well that's her. >> she asked for the bag and

never showed up. >> they said that there were 250 calls ahead of us and, they said that they would actually come by to take a report afterwards. they still have not come by and it still hasn't happened yet. >> we reached out to oakland police and asked them if they ever responded. they asked me to be more specific about the location, but they never replied back. part of the platform for her candidacy is focusing on increasing public safety by building more housing for the homeless. a platform where she now has a firsthand experience. >> i'm not angry at her or anything like that. however, you know, i think this is yet another example of how we don't have a first responder service, there was just we were left. i was left to fend for myself, in essence. >> she says whoever gets elected to the at-large role should focus on reducing incidents like this one. in oakland, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> we are down to 70 days to election day. today, republican presidential nominee donald trump picked up an endorsement from a former democrat, tulsi

gabbard. she once represented hawaii in congress and ran for president in 2020. gabbard will help moderate a trump town hall event in wisconsin on thursday, and she's been helping him prepare to debate democratic presidential nominee kamala harris. reporter brian abel has a look at the state of the race. >> the former president sparking a debate about the debate after a social media post late last night criticizing abc news and saying, quote, why would i do the debate against kamala harris on that network? this, as the former president continues to criticize harris over the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan at arlington national cemetery. former president and republican nominee donald trump, capitalizing on neither vice president kamala harris nor president joe biden having any public appearances today. trump, observing the three year anniversary of 13 service members killed outside the kabul airport in afghanistan from a terrorist bomb as the u.s. exited the country. on the campaign trail, trump has railed

he was leading us up a trail at the coyote valley open space preserve. camera in hand. an avid photographer, hauri is one of the participants in a photo contest sponsored by the santa clara valley open space authority, which manages the preserve. its goal to capture the magic of the open space through the eyes of its visitors. >> i bet a lot of people don't realize that there's a trail down there. they can ride their bike on and walk and such, and, there's a lot to see down there. >> and what he saw on one moonlit night was a bald eagle perched on a branch in front of the darkening sky. what happened next was a delicate combination of skill and a little luck. >> this bird was sitting in a tree just next to the trail. also lucked out because the moon was out. so i kind of maneuvered. i got off my bike and it didn't fly away, which surprised me, and i maneuvered around until i get the moon and the bird, both in the same shot.

it just off the coast. it struck around 5 a.m. cnn portugal was live on the air when it happened. you can react. although they didn't say anything, people throughout portugal felt it. even people in neighboring spain felt that earthquake. authorities have called off a search at a collapsed ice cave in iceland, where an american tourist was killed yesterday. another person, an american woman, was seriously injured. they were part of a group visiting the inside of the ice cave, where

the country's largest glacier is located. earlier reports of two missing tourists turned out to be wrong. the icelandic mountain guides association is asking for tighter regulations on ice cave tours during the summer, when melting ice makes visiting dangerous and a major landslide in alaska killed one person and injured at least three others, damaging homes and roads and forcing evacuations. >> the governor of alaska issued a disaster declaration in the meantime, much of the nation is dealing with extreme heat, even record breaking temperatures. abc news reporter melissa adan has the details. reporter evacuation orders are in place after a deadly landslide tore through ketchikan, alaska, sunday, killing at least one person and injuring three. >> this following heavy rainfall from over the weekend, we need to get out of here. dan multiple homes and roads are damaged while officials are concerned a second landslide could destroy more of the community. >> i'm really concerned for them because the weather hasn't stopped down there. it's still
