coast side, mild to warm weather later on in the evening. we do have some changes coming as we hit the holiday weekend. i'll be back with the forecast coming right up. >> all right sandhya, thank you. we'll check back. tonight, police in oakland are investigating a shooting outside a dollar tree store. we counted about two dozen shell casings in the parking lot on east 12th street at 25th avenue, about a mile from fruitvale. bart police say one person was shot and killed there just before 4 p.m. they were at a tent where people could sign up for free cell phone service. police haven't shared any details about a suspect. and we're following the story of a deadly wrong-way crash in san jose. monday. dash cam video from another driver on 85 shows the truck as you see there, driven by a florida man shortly before it hit a tesla suv, killing the people inside. a 47 year old woman and 14 year old boy. the chp says the truck was heading in the wrong direction for several minutes before the crash. the 39 year old truck driver remains in the hospital with major injuries. he has yet to be charged but could face felony manslaughter

charges. >> new at 11 leaders in san francisco schools are laying out how they'll make some tough decisions and figure out which schools to close. san francisco unified is facing a financial crisis, and it doesn't have enough students to keep every school open. a coalition of unions protested ahead of today's meeting, calling out the staffing shortage in the district and demanding that state financial monitors speed up hiring. the district admits it's struggling to keep classrooms staffed, and many campuses are in poor shape. it's not clear how many schools could close next year. the district says it will consider how many campuses are in each area. historical inequities in neighborhoods, academic performance, teacher turnover and building conditions, among other factors. >> we can better support our students, not by trying to maintain buildings, but by trying to provide in those buildings the resources that our students need. >> on september 18th, the superintendent will send letters
11:04 pm
to families with the district's proposed list of closures. sfusd says it will hold at least two meetings, with each potentially closing school before the school board's final vote in december. and of course, there will be a lot of debate when that list comes out in response to the protest today, the school district told us in a statement, quote, sfusd continues to work collaboratively with our fiscal advisors and labor partners to hire for vacant positions. >> the benefits and safety of synthetic turf is something we have taken a close look at in recent years, either as a drought solution or with concerns over chemicals. the debate is fierce. today, santa clara county delayed a vote on a possible ban until january. the study, though supervisors received from the public health department, admits some health risks, but the conclusions are mixed. abc seven news southbay reporter lauren martinez has more on a similar discussion tonight in the city of sunnyval. >> these fields used to be filled with svr rubber, which
11:05 pm
was basically ground up tires. okay. it's now filled with organic materials. >> supporters of synthetic turf want to make sure their voices are heard. on tuesday night, sunnyvale city council members considered banning artificial turf on city fields. some of the youth sports organizations are questioning what's the rush on a ban? >> we have so many questions. why was there no outreach to the people who rent these fields, who provide services on behalf of the city of sunnyvale to our residents? >> sandra todd is with sunnyvale alliance soccer club, representatives from little league, softball and rugby organizations sent councilors a joint letter on why they feel synthetic turf fields add positive value. fair oaks is the city's only public park that has synthetic fields, so you can use an artificial turf field about 3 to 4 times as many hours as a grass field because it doesn't get damaged. advocates for artificial turf say it provides accessibility through the winter. the city closes their
11:06 pm
grass fields from december 1st to march 1st. >> maybe they're an improvement, but there's still a long way to go from safe. >> courtney jensen, co-founder of community for natural play services, is a supporter of a ban. >> today it was like 95 degrees in sunnyvale, and i measured a piece of grass outside of the play area, and that was i think like 80 degrees. and i went onto the field and i measured the turf, and that was between 130 and 140 degrees. >> earlier tuesday morning, the santa clara county board of supervisors decided to postpone a decision on artificial turf. opponents of abandoned sunnyvale hope city councilors will take their time as well. >> santa clara county just released a great big, long report that our counselors look at that. okay, let's use the science and let's use current information. and let's make a really nuanced discussion. the supervisors will now vote on the issue in january in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> so much of our daily work
11:07 pm
here at abc seven is about building a better bay area. so when we see signs of progress, we want to share them with you. and tonight there's a breakthrough to help get more electric vehicles on our roads. california is getting nearly $150 million to build charging stations all across the state. now that includes $14 million in federal grant funding for bart to install charging ports at every single bart parking lot. most of the total money will go toward building charging stations for zero emission trucks across the west coast. over in oakland, the school district is looking to build a better bay area by helping out the planet. it is the first school district anywhere to electrify its entire fleet of school busses. >> they are dope, if i may use that word. yes. they're awesome. >> i'm glad that they thought about the environment and the kids health. when he got home, he was like, mom, mom, clean, clean. and i was like, they are clean. i saw that, so he was excited. >> a families can track the
11:08 pm
busses through an app which lets which tells them when the bus will arrive at their house and when their child has been dropped off at school. that's reassuring for parents. the busses are actually owned by a company called zoom, which offsets the cost by using the busses batteries to sell power to the electric company. it's pronounced zoom, but spelled zoom. by the way, our final building a better bay area breakthrough, brings us to the peninsula and a milestone moment for san mateo county's largest affordable housing project ever. the county board of supervisors approved a $14 million loan today to continue construction at midway village in daly city's bayshore neighborhood. we were there in 2022 as construction was underway in the first phase of the development near the cow palace, 147 affordable housing units opened in may. the loan, approved today, will help pay for construction of 111 more apartments. the county hopes to have more than 550 affordable homes by the time the work is done.

>> after decades in south bay politics, santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez has a new job out of state. today, the commissioners in bernalillo county, new mexico, approved chavez's contract as county manager. chavez has been a major player in the south bay for years, serving on the san jose city council and the santa clara county board of supervisors. she unsuccessfully ran for san jose mayor twice, most recently in 2022. in her new role, chavez will be returning to her home state, managing the county that includes albuquerque. >> it's very bittersweet. i don't think i actually knew exactly what that word meant until now. and, you know, and i it's something that, i'm still sort of processing, to be frank with you, because, you know, i love this place, and we've done so much to build it up. and this will always be my home. >> chavez will start her new job in november, by which point south bay voters will have elected her replacement in the federal election interference case against former president donald trump. >> special counsel jack smith
11:10 pm
filed what's known as a superseding indictment today. it does not drop any of the original four charges against trump. instead, it adjusts the charges in response to the supreme court's ruling last month on presidential immunity. san jose congresswoman zoe lofgren explains the big change in the indictment. >> mr. smith has to accommodate his indictment to that case, and there's two elements to it. one is the acts themselves, and of course, the other is what evidence can be used. he's properly taken out the communication with jeff clark. the court said specifically that that could not be used as evidence. >> the trump pleaded not guilty to the original charges last august. >> former president trump said today he will take part in the abc news debate with kamala harris. there were some indications he might back out. there is one question that remains unsettled, and that is whether the microphones will be muted when the candidates aren't speaking. trump has said he'd
11:11 pm
