outage. government officials in at least four states warned some communities about cell phone outages and some of those outages reportedly affected 911 services. an at&t spokesperson now saying we've resolved a software issue that disrupted the ability of a limited number of our customers to connect to our wireless network. the disruption comes just one day after the fcc announced that at&t has paid nearly $1 million in a settlement. the agency was investigating whether the company failed to deliver 911 calls and notify call centers during an outage last year. rhiannon. >> all right, perry, thank you for that. we are also following some breaking news from the middle east. israeli forces have launched raids against alleged terror suspects in the west bank. at least nine palestinians have reportedly been killed. the raids are being described as a major operation in the occupied territories, and it comes just one day after an israeli hostage held by hamas was reunited with his family. israeli troops pulled the 52 year old out of a tunnel under gaza after 326 days

in captivity. hamas is still believed to be holding 108 hostages, with just 69 days until the presidential election. >> special counsel jack smith has announced a superseding indictment against former president trump and his election interference case. the changes were made to the indictment after the supreme court's ruling on presidential immunity, and now one of the justices is speaking out about that ruling. here's abc's lionel moise. >> this morning, former president trump faces a superseding indictment from special counsel jack smith for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. the new indictment charges trump with the same four crimes as the previous indictment, including conspiracy to defraud the united states to obstruct the certification of the electoral votes on january 6th and conspiracy against the right to vote and to have one's vote counted. but the charges are now only for what he allegedly did in his role as a candidate, not as president. >> the special counsel is making clear here that as president, he

had no official responsibility in doing this. this was all done as a private citizen, as a candidate to retain power. >> the changes to the indictment were made in response to the recent supreme court ruling on presidential immunity, which determined a president is entitled, at minimum, to a presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. supreme court justice ketanji brown jackson wrote the dissenting opinion. she's now speaking out about the case. >> i was concerned about a system that appeared to provide immunity for one individual under one set of circumstances. when we have a criminal justice system that had ordinarily treated everyone the same. >> are you prepared that this election could end up before the supreme court? >> as prepared as anyone can be. >> trump calls the superseding indictment a direct assault on

democracy. his running mate jd vance also responding. it looks like jack smith doing more of what he does, which is filing these absurd lawsuits in an effort to influence the election. justice department policy prevents prosecutors from filing federal charges against candidates within 60 days of an election. this filing came 70 days before the election, but trump argues the 60 day window should include early voting, which begins next month. in some places. the case, drawing comparisons to the 2016 election, where two weeks before election day, then fbi director james comey announced he was reopening the investigation into hillary clinton's emails, only to say two days before the election, nothing of note was uncovered. the focus now on whether this superseding indictment against trump will help or hurt him or have no effect at all. >> it's going to be really interesting because this is going to boil down to how people see these acts and what was actually done. these

modifications were done to ensure that the supreme court's ruling was respected. >> as for how this could affect trump on the campaign trail, the special counsel says he is willing to waive trump's appearance at his arraignment, meaning trump would not need to be in court. analysts say there is no chance this case goes to trial before the election. rhiannon. andrew. >> all right, lionel, thank you for that. vice president harris and running mate tim walz are kicking off a bus tour in georgia today. they've also agreed to their first joint interview, set to air on cnn tomorrow. a new poll taken after last week's convention shows harris improving on key issues, including the economy. 43% of registered voters said they prefer donald trump's economic approach, compared to 40% preferring harris's approach. but trump was 11 points ahead on that issue last month. >> up to 80 million americans are facing extreme heat today when factoring in the humidity, it will feel like more than 100 degrees from the deep south all the way to the northeast. it's

not as bad as chicago, where the heat index hit 114 yesterday. washington, d.c. and nashville could break records today. we'll check your full forecast in just a few moments. >> a 41 year old man from new hampshire has died from the rare mosquito borne virus known as triple e. he is the state's first human case of the virus. in ten years. experts say the risk of contracting triple e is low, and most who get infected don't have symptoms. but cases can be severe, including brain inflammation. experts say hotter, wetter summers are increasing the risk for mosquito borne diseases. >> for the second time in recent days, we have a tragic story from the world of youth sports. another young football player has died after a play on the field, in this case a 13 year old. this morning, a west virginia community is in mourning after a 13 year old died during football practice. cohen, craddock's father, says the eighth grader suffered from brain bleeding and swelling after making a tackle. he says cohen was wearing a helmet and got back up after the collision. took a few steps, then lost

consciousness. the principal of craddock school, remembering him as a wonderful, polite and smart young man. craddock's father is now vowing to help prevent future tragedies by getting other players soft shelled helmet covers like these, called guardian caps, saying i don't want anybody else to go through what we are going through. currently, craddock's death came on the same day a 16 year old high school quarterback died in alabama. caden tolias family says he suffered a brain injury after a routine tackle. >> caden was kind. he was compassionate. >> he loved every person that he encountered. >> the national center for catastrophic sports injury research found deaths during football games are rare. last year, out of nearly 2 million players from youth leagues up to the nfl, there were 16 reported fatalities. those guardian caps are gaining popularity. nfl commissioner roger goodell says they reduce concussions by more than 50%. >> a man was rescued from the colorado mountains just a day after his coworkers left him

morning america. good morning america. every day of your life. >> prosecutors in utah say corey richards killed her husband. and now they'll try to prove it. a judge has ruled the 34 year old mother will stand trial for allegedly poisoning her husband, eric, with fentanyl. prosecutors say she reached out to her dealer after realizing she needed more of the drug to kill him. richards has pleaded not guilty. after eric's death, she wrote a children's book about grief. >> a children's book is being blamed for starting a fire in a family's minivan. the fire department blames the battery. in the book. firefighters in burke county, north carolina, say this is what's left of a

family's car seat after a battery inside a children's book caught fire in their minivan. >> just very shocked that could ever happen, but also so blessed that she wasn't in there. >> minutes after destinee williams and her one year old daughter misty had returned from church, a neighbor saw smoke coming from their van. a family member then put out the fire with a garden hose. firefighters say the cause was a copy of this book that was left in the van. the book makes sounds thanks to a small speaker powered by a button battery and officials say that battery overheated and caught fire. >> we had multiple push button books for toddlers and infants. no warning labels. it just tells you how to discard it and how to have an adult change the battery. >> fire officials initially believed it was a lithium battery. try to keep them as cool as possible. >> that's the only precautions that we can really take. but overnight, the book's publisher saying our electronic children's

saturday. the public has been warned to stay away from it. its owner was reportedly cited for having a rogue cow. >> back in 2020, a latino civil rights group is urging the justice department to investigate a series of raids conducted in texas last week. the raids, led by texas attorney general ken paxton, are part of an investigation into alleged voter fraud and vote harvesting, which is the practice of collecting and submitting ballots for others. the civil rights group claims the operation amounted to voter intimidation and targeted elderly volunteers. 87 year old lidia martinez says officers raided her home while she was in her nightgown, and he said, we need for you to go sit down. >> and i said, well, let me go get dressed. he says, i'm telling you to go sit down. and i said, what? why are you why do you have a search warrant? he says, sit down. we ask the questions, not you. >> the latino group has filed a civil rights complaint, but no response yet from the texas attorney general. >> another bizarre story involving former presidential

candidate rfk jr. and this one involves a whale and now an environmental group wants answers. a whale of a tale has robert f kennedy jr in hot water with environmentalists again, just weeks after he admitted to dumping a dead baby bear in manhattan. >> i said, let's go put the bear in central park and we'll make it look like he got hit by a bike. >> kennedy faces new backlash. the longtime conservationist allegedly saw the head off a dead whale back in 1994, after it washed up on a massachusetts beach. kennedy reportedly cut off the whale's head and then bungee corded it to the roof of the family minivan before driving it across state lines to bring it back to his new york home so he could study the skul. rfk's daughter, kick kennedy, originally shared the fishy anecdote more than a decade ago, calling the stunt normal day to day stuff, but the story resurfaced in recent days, leading the center for
