around oakland, so we'll see numbers top out in the mid 90s as we get towards three 4:00 in the afternoon, maybe a few upper seconds in our inland valleys. and look at all those 80s arriving from the south bay upper 80s in san jose, 90 in santa rosa. but we'll get into more pronounced cooling as we get into your thursday. the weekend. the long holiday weekend has a bit of a twist. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. amanda. >> good morning lisa. overall, our overall map showing a quiet and calm commute across the bay area. of course, minus that typical slowdown along the altamont pass, we're seeing a major slowdown between 205 and 580 there. and then we'll take you to dublin. and if you're driving here, there is a solo crash that you'll come across, a dump truck actually hit an overhead sign in the roadwork area. so all the right lanes were already closed. and now traffic is passing only in the left lane there. and then i'll end in albany. eastbound 580 after central avenue, a two vehicle crash has moved out of the right lane to the shoulder.

one vehicle is actually facing the wrong way, causing a minor slowdown. approaching golden gate fields there. let's get back to the desk. >> thank you. amanda. new details san francisco school leaders are laying out how they will make some tough decisions and figure out which schools to close. san francisco unified facing a financial crisis. and it doesn't have enough students to keep every school open. abc seven news reporter laura rodriguez joining us live in the studio with more on this. gloria. >> good morning. kumasi. right now, it's not clear how many schools will close, but the superintendent is set to send letters to families with the district's proposed list of closures on september 18th. ahead of last night's school board meeting, a coalition of unions protested. they're calling out the staffing shortage in the district and also demanding that state financial monitors speed up hiring. the district admits it's struggling to keep classrooms staffed and that many campuses are in poor shape. the district says it will consider how many campuses are in each area. historical inequities in neighborhoods, academic

performance, teacher turnover and building conditions, among other factors. when deciding on those closures. >> we can better support our students, not by trying to maintain buildings, but by trying to provide in those buildings the resources that our students need. >> i am a single mom, it's exhausting to do this, to have to stand. and i woke up at 6 a.m. this morning, got the kids to school to get here so that we could show up and show how hard it is to do this work of being a parent and now having to worry about whether our school is going to be open next year. just it's not okay. >> parents angry with the closures and the teacher shortage spoke out at last night's meeting. right now, there are more than 100 teacher vacancies in the district. the district told us in a statement, quote, sfusd continues to work

collaboratively with our fiscal advisors and labor partners to hire for vacant positions. sfusd says it will hold at least two meetings, with each potentially closing school before the board's final vote in december. the closures would take effect for the next school year. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> developing news in the east bay. police in oakland are investigating a deadly shooting outside of a dollar tree. we counted about two dozen shell casings in the parking lot on east 12th street at 25th avenue. it's about a mile from the fruitvale bart station. police say one person was shot and killed there just before four last night. they were at a tent where people could sign up for free cell phone service. police have not shared any details about a suspect. >> we're following the story of the deadly wrong-way crash that killed two people in san jose on monday. dash cam video from another driver on highway 85 shows the truck driven by a man

from florida, shortly before it hit a tesla suv. that collision killed both people in the tesla, a 47 year old woman and a 14 year old boy. the chp says the truck was heading in the wrong direction for several minutes before the crash. the 39 year old driver truck driver remains in the hospital with major injuries. he hasn't been charged yet, but could potentially face felony manslaughter charges. the man's driving record show that he has been cited for several traffic citation infractions. excuse me, including misdemeanor careless driving. >> we've been looking at the safety and benefits of synthetic turf over the past few years, either as a drought solution or over concerns about chemicals. the debate here is pretty fierce. yesterday, santa clara county delayed a vote on a turf ban until january. the study, though supervisors received from the public health department, admits some health risks. but the conclusions are mixed. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on a

similar discussion happening in the city of sunnyvale. >> these fields used to be filled with sbr rubber, which was basically ground up tires. okay. it's now filled with organic materials. >> supporters of synthetic turf want to make sure their voices are heard. on tuesday night, sunnyvale city council members considered banning artificial turf on city fields. some of the youth sports organizations are questioning what's the rush on a ban? >> and we have so many questions why was there no outreach to the people who rent these fields, who provide services on behalf of the city of sunnyvale to our residents? >> sandra todd is with sunnyvale alliance soccer club, representatives from little league softball and rugby organizations sent councilors a joint letter on why they feel synthetic turf fields add positive value. fair oaks is the city's only public park that has synthetic fields, so you can use an artificial turf field about 3 to 4 times as many hours as a

grass field because it doesn't get damaged. advocates for artificial turf say it provides accessibility through the winter. the city closes their grass fields from december 1st to march 1st. >> maybe they're an improvement, but they're still a long way to go from safe. >> courtney jensen, co-founder of community for natural play services, is a supporter of a ban. >> today, it was like 95 degrees in sunnyvale, and i measured a piece of grass outside of the play area, and that was, i think like 80 degrees. and i went on to the field and i measured the turf, and that was between 130 and 140 degrees. >> earlier tuesday morning, the santa clara county board of supervisors decided to postpone a decision on artificial turf. opponents of abandoned sunnyvale, hope city councilors will take their time as well. santa clara county just released a great big, long report that our counselors. >> look at that. okay let's use the science and let's use current information. and let's make a really nuanced discussion. >> the supervisors will now vote

with what changes now in the case? yeah, reggie. >> prosecutors issued a superseding indictment, meaning they're reworking the charges against trump. and this comes after the supreme court ruled this summer that all former presidents received special immunity for official actions. so the special counsel is removing aspects of what trump did as president from the charges, and instead is focusing on what trump did as a presidential candidate. now, the new indictment accuses trump of the same four crimes, including conspiracy to defraud the u.s, obstructing the certification of electoral votes on january 6th, and conspiracy against the right to vote and have votes counted. trump called the new indictment a, quote, direct assault on democracy. his running mate, jd vance, reacted to those changes. >> i think it's clearly an effort to try to do more election interference from jack smith. he should be ashamed of himself. and it's one of the reasons why we have to win, because he should not be anywhere near power. >> the former president denies all wrongdoing in the case. the

and that is going to allow for a stronger onshore flow tomorrow. as for today, it will be slightly cooler. we saw 101 yesterday in san rafael and 99 in livermore, so maybe about 97 in the hottest locations, 62 in oakland, 59 in fremont. beautiful view from our sutro tower camera. so hot again inland upper 90s for some of you. overnight, the fog will be dense at the coast and will begin to make a move across the bay. and then for labor day, we're setting up the coolest conditions and then by the actual holiday on monday, the temperatures come up, so we'll cool off and then warm up. as for your friday. this is when the numbers will be much more comfortable. but notice we're still in the low 90s here inland, some mid 80s out towards danville. so that's a big improvement. 80 around fremont and low 80s in santa rosa. by saturday not much change. the coolest day looks to be on sunday. we'll see an additional 2 to 4 degrees of cooling with more coastal fog, but we're still going to see plenty of

manager. she's been a major player in the south bay for years, serving on the san jose city council and the santa clara county board of supervisors. she unsuccessfully ran for san jose mayor twice, most recently in 2022. in this new role, she returns to her home state, managing the county that includes albuquerque. >> it's very bittersweet. i don't think i actually knew exactly what that word meant until now. and, you know, and i it's something that, i'm still sort of processing, to be frank with you, because, you know, i love this place, and we've done so much to build it up, and this will always be my home. >> chavez will start her new job in november, by which point south bay voters will have elected her replacement. >> governor newsom signed two bills into law aimed at addressing the state's homeless crisis. the first law clears the path for additional emergency shelter beds by using hotels and motels. the other streamlines the process for local

governments to permit and facilitate the construction of accessory dwelling units, or adus, throughout the state. governor newsom says the new laws will provide local governments even more tools to provide housing on the peninsula. a milestone moment for san mateo county's largest affordable housing project ever. the county board of supervisors approved a $14 million loan to continue construction at midway village in daly city's bayshore neighborhood, and we were there in 2022 as construction was underway in the first phase of that development near cow palace, 147 affordable housing units opened in may. the loan, approved yesterday, will help to pay for the construction of 111 more apartments. the county is hoping to have more than 550 affordable homes by the time this work is done. >> not exactly the way most of us want to end a vacation. getting a list of chores that we have to complete before we go home. a bill in the governor's desk is trying to add more transparency to airbnb bookings.

temperatures coming down a little bit. so instead of that 95 in san jose, about 90 today, but plenty of mid and upper seconds. so that's still a warm day for you in the south bay. 74 in santa cruz on the peninsula, it was 95 yesterday in redwood city thinking that sea breeze will allow for those upper 80s today, 83, in los altos and right along the coast there a mix of clouds and sun, so temperatures will be cooler. but in the upper 60s, 70 daly city we'll call it partly cloudy, sunny downtown 73 and up in the north bay. numbers coming down here just a little bit. it's still going to be warm, but we had 101 yesterday in san rafael, 96 in santa rosa. so perhaps not quite as toasty there. 93 sonoma and on the bay shore here, upper 70s in oakland, union city, a hot day at 8688, in castro valley and we were about 99 in livermore yesterday. 97 today. little change. still warm to hot for you, 98 in brentwood and san

are on scene there, blocking the right lane there. and the fifth avenue offramp because of a car on fire on the shoulder, we are seeing heavy traffic backed up to 23rd avenue with speeds down to 16mph in the area. take international boulevard to avoid those delays. now, i'm also tracking a major outage for at&t customers. if you were trying to make calls or send messages yesterday evening but did not have service, you are not alone. at&t customers in california and other parts of the country had their service cut off for up to eight hours yesterday. the company says it has since resolved a software issue that disrupted wireless services, including right here in the bay area. san jose police and pinole police departments said the outage affected 9-1-1 calls. at&t released a statement after the outage. it read, quote, we we've resolved a software issue that disrupted the ability of a limited number of our customers to connect to our wireless network. we apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate

nervous system disease known as triple e this year. the cdc has found cases in five states. >> berkeley police say they arrested the gunman who shot and killed a man inside a shelter for the unhoused. this happened sunday inside ursula sherman village on harrison street, close to target off of 580. shelter residents told us a man who lived there was shot in his room. police found the suspected shooter in a parked car tuesday morning and arrested him. officers found guns and ammunition inside the 67 year old's car. the suspect is now in jail, being held without bail. the motive is still under investigation. >> hundreds of united airlines flight attendants are set to protest today at sfo. they will be holding a demonstration as their union reveals the results of a strike authorization vote. 28,000 united flight attendants nationwide voted on whether to strike if an agreement on a new contract can't be reached. they are asking for a double digit base pay increase, among other

demands. sfo is one of 20 airports across the country where united flight attendants will be setting up informal picket lines this morning as the vote results are revealed. california is launching a new campaign to combat the fentanyl crisis. this campaign by the state health department aims to better educate the public about preventing opioid related overdoses. it will include demonstrations on how to administer naloxone, also known as narcan. that's the drug that's used to reverse opioid overdoses. that announcement is set to take place this morning in sacramento. >> now to a story we've been following. some say they're seeing an improvement. one month after a curfew went into effect in san francisco's tenderloin district. the curfew was implemented in hopes of reducing crime and open air drug markets. it's only in effect for this part of the tenderloin that you see shaded in red on your screen from midnight until 5 a.m, city leaders approved a curfew in june that forces some of these businesses to close between those hours. our abc seven news

data team sifted through police records, and our team noticed a drop in police incident reports for the month of august, compared to months before the curfew was enacted. people who live and work in the tenderloin say they are noticing a difference. >> it's getting better. it's like a little bit at a time. >> it has been very successful. i would say, for a month, because we have seen less of congregation in various parts of tenderloin. >> despite the progress, businesses impacted by the curfew say they are suffering in addition, other residents tell abc seven they want police to crack down on people selling drugs on the sidewalks and not just businesses. at liberty mutual fire insurance company to the list of insurers ending fire coverage in california. this starts next month. 17,000 policyholders will not have their home fire insurance renewed. liberty mutual says the decision is not specific to california and is not related to

fire risk. instead, it's claiming, quote, that it's retiring the antiquated tech it uses to manage dwelling fire policies. >> the new technology that insurance companies are using, those aerial drones, the aerial images that drones are giving them, you know, ai data mining, risk scoring systems, insurers are are making business decisions because they are for profit companies. >> liberty mutual joins allstate, state farm farmers and travelers, all companies that are either dropping california policies or raising rates at a time when wildfires are only getting bigger and more destructive. homeowners affected by the change have 75 days from the time their insurance provider tells them they're not renewing. to find a new provider. >> a popular vietnamese restaurant that recently closed its doors in san francisco is coming back to the city. we're talking about the slanted door. it's reopening in the mission. that's where it first opened in

across the bay. and that brings a cooldown that's going to last for part of the holiday weekend. but the actual holiday on monday will be warm. here's a look at how quick we're going to warm up in our inland valleys today. by 10:00, we'll be about 80 around livermore, upper 90s today for the afternoon high three 4:00 and then the temperatures still in the 80s by 8:00, and then dropping off into the 60s overnight. so by friday, you'll notice a significant drop in temperatures with numbers coming down at least seven degrees inland. but we'll begin to feel that tomorrow as well, with numbers down across the bay shore, whereas today will be in the mid to upper 80s. this is friday in the 70s from oakland to hayward. saturday little change. the coolest day should be sunday where highs will be just in the upper 80s. so really pleasant here with numbers still in the 60s in the fog at the shoreline. as for today, last hot day with 97 livermore upper 70s for you in oakland, 92 in santa rosa with 80s on the

hurt and what officials are calling a possible explosion at an airlines maintenance facility in atlanta. delta says a wheel ruptured yesterday in its facility at the atlanta international airport, killing a 58 year old and 37 year old.

been following. last week we told you about a bride to be. her nightmare of a wedding dress story. well, the pittsburg bridal shop where she bought her dress suddenly closed without giving her the dress. >> all with only two weeks before the wedding, dozens of viewers reached out to us after the story aired. and now that bride to be has a new wedding dress. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has that story. >> hi guys. we're at nellie's bridal boutique in south san francisco. >> akilah mongtomery is all smiles in this newly recorded video, but last week it was a different story when the bridal shop in pittsburgh, where she bought her dress many months ago, suddenly closed. the owner, nowhere to be found. before the alterations were made. all less than two weeks from akila's wedding. >> completely empty. no dresses. no nothing. >> i was just like, what is going on? i honestly thought something had happened to her. >> days after our story ran, that owner was suddenly around again. even meeting with akila,
