now abc seven mornings live, now at six san francisco unifies unified has a lot to sort out. >> they are facing protests and a lot of decisions from staffing to school closures. we're going to show you the tense meeting last night. >> could synthetic turf be an answer to the drought? why? the fake grass is getting a lot of support and a lot of criticism. >> one of the biggest criticism when it comes to electric vehicles is the charging infrastructure. $150 million is hoping to change that narrative. >> lisa argen is the person i always think of when i think of electric vehicles. really? yeah, because that story you told me where you ran out of power on the highway. that story and then had to plug in with, like, a regular cord into the hotel room? >> yeah, because you get on the app and they're like, yeah, charging station two miles closed. sorry offline. and you're like, well, i really needed that. yeah, the next one is 20 miles and you have ten
6:02 am
miles left. yeah. you shouldn't go there. >> are you surprised that i listened and retain the information a little bit? yeah. >> see? anyway, yeah, i'm all for more. that infrastructure. you know, if you have a tesla, then you're fine. but not me. all right. good morning everybody. we're starting out with some mild temperatures. the fog is at the coast, and that is going to provide a nice afternoon there. although if you're waiting on the sun yesterday we had a little bit in half moon bay. today the clearing will be limited there. and the hot temperatures back again. pier 15. gorgeous view here. the sun coming up at 636. it sets at 743 and the current temperatures range from the upper 50s. san francisco 54, half moon bay. it is 64, in hayward, 65 in san jose and in the south bay. looking at the marine, the marine layer right there in the distance from our sutro tower camera. so there's not much of it. it's not going to last. that is compressed and it's only at a couple hundred feet. 54 petaluma. that's a cool temperature, but that's because we have the clear sky still
6:03 am
anywhere from 2 to 4 degrees warmer than yesterday. and as we go through the next several hours, it's a quick warm up upper 80s by noontime inland, mid 70s around the bay shore. we'll see about 98. in concord, about 95 in san ramon, 82 in hayward, and those 60s with the clouds at the coast more pronounced cooling for your thursday on the way. amanda. hi, lisa. >> already busy on the san mateo bridge here at 602, but really no major issues. it will take you 11 minutes to get from the toll plaza into foster city and then i do want to take you to oakland. this is a look at the nimitz. again, no drama for your drive here, which is great. there was a minor slowdown ahead on northbound 880 from an earlier car fire at fifth avenue that cleared, but it did leave minor residual delays and will stay in oakland. westbound 24 before 580, a two car crash just cleared out of the two lanes. minor slowdown there, taking things down to about 35mph. kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. new details san francisco school leaders are laying out how they will be
6:04 am
making some tough decisions and figure out which schools to close. san francisco unified is facing a financial crisis, and it doesn't have enough students to keep every school open. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in studio with more on this. gloria. good morning. >> kumasi. right now, it's not clear how many schools will close, but the superintendent is set to send letters to families with the district's proposed list of closures on september 18th. ahead of last night's school board meeting, a coalition of unions protested. they're calling out the staffing shortage in the district and demanding that state financial monitors speed up hiring. the district admits it is struggling to keep classrooms staffed, and that many campuses are in poor shape. the district says it will consider how many campuses are in each area, historical inequities and neighborhoods, academic performance, teacher turnover and building conditions, among other factors. when they decide on the closures. >> we can better support our students, not by trying to maintain buildings, but by
6:05 am
trying to provide in those buildings the resources that our students need. >> i am a single mom. it's exhausting to do this, to have to stand. and i woke up at 6 a.m. this morning, got the kids to school to get here so that we could show up and show how hard it is to do this work of being a parent, and now having to worry about whether our school is going to be open next year. just it's not okay. >> parents angry with the closures and the teacher shortage spoke out at last night's meeting. right now, there are more than 100 teacher vacancies in the district. the school district told us in a statement, quote, sfusd continues to work collaboratively with our fiscal advisors and labor partners to hire for vacant positions. the district says it will hold at least two meetings, with each potentially closing school before the school board's final vote in december. and the
6:06 am
closures would take effect for the next school year. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria. thank you. developing news in the east bay. police in oakland are investigating a deadly shooting outside of a dollar tree. we counted about two dozen shell casings in the parking lot on east 12th street at 25th avenue, about a mile from the fruitvale bart station. police say one person was shot and killed there just before four last night. they were at a tent where people could sign up for free cell phone service. police haven't shared any details about a suspect. >> we are following the story of the deadly wrong-way crash that killed two people in san jose monday. this dash cam video is from another driver on highway 85. shows the truck driven by a man from florida, shortly before it hit a tesla suv. that collision killed both people in the tesla. a 47 year old woman and a and a 14 year old boy. the chp says the truck was heading in the wrong direction for
6:07 am
several minutes before the crash. the 39 year old truck driver remains in the hospital with major injuries. he has not been charged yet, but could face felony manslaughter charges. the man's driving record shows he's been cited for several traffic infractions, including misdemeanor careless driving. >> there's a heated turf war continuing in the bay area. we're talking about the services. people play sports on its natural grass versus artificial turf. yesterday, santa clara county delayed a vote on an artificial turf ban until january. the study, though supervisors received from the public health department, admits some health risks. but the conclusions are mixed. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on a similar discussion happening in the city of sunnyvale. >> these fields used to be filled with sbr rubber, which was basically ground up tires. okay. it's now filled with organic materials. >> supporters of synthetic turf want to make sure their voices are heard. on tuesday night,
6:08 am
sunnyvale city council members considered banning artificial turf on city fields. some of the youth sports organizations are questioning what's the rush on a ban? >> and we have so many questions. why was there no outreach to the people who rent these fields, who provide services on behalf of the city of sunnyvale to our residents? >> sandra todd is with sunnyvale alliance soccer club, representatives from little league, softball and rugby organizations sent councilors a joint letter on why they feel synthetic turf fields add positive value. fair oaks is the city's only public park that has synthetic fields, so you can use an artificial turf field about 3 to 4 times as many hours as a grass field because it doesn't get damaged. advocates for artificial turf say it provides accessibility through the winter. the city closes their grass fields from december 1st to march 1st. >> maybe they're an improvement, but there's still a long way to go from safe. >> courtney jensen, co-founder of community for natural play services, is a supporter of a
6:09 am
ban. >> today, it was like 95 degrees in sunnyvale, and i measured a piece of grass outside of the play area. and that was, i think like 80 degrees. and i went onto the field and i measured the turf and that was between 130 and 140 degrees. >> earlier tuesday morning, the santa clara county board of supervisors decided to postpone a decision on artificial turf. opponents of abandoned sunnyvale hope city councilors will take their time as well. >> santa clara county just released a great big, long report that our counselors. look at that. okay, let's use the science and let's use current information. and let's make a really nuanced discussion. the supervisors will now vote on the issue in january in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> california is getting nearly $150 million to build electric vehicle charging stations across the state. most of this money will go toward building charging charging stations for zero emission trucks across the west
6:10 am
coast, but bart will be getting $14 million to install charging ports in every bart parking lot. all right, lisa, now you know where to go. >> you know what it was my husband's fault. it wasn't my fault. so. but thanks. name him and blame him. yeah. no. totally his fault. mostly everything is right. okay good morning everybody. we're starting out with a gorgeous shot from mount tam. fog free conditions here. the layering of the marine layer here, it will just be cooling the coast. but how pretty is that? the sun coming up at 636. and each and every day, we'll get a stronger push of an onshore flow. current numbers right now are in the upper 50s san francisco, 60, in oakland, 65. in san jose, and 50s with reduced visibility at the shoreline. there's a look at our exploratorium camera, nice and clear downtown 55 santa rosa. it is 63 by the delta. another hot day inland, but overall, maybe 2 to 4 degrees of warming of cooling, taking the edge off some of those triple digits from
6:11 am
the north bay or near triple digits. so upper 90s should do it today. so hot again inland overnight. the dense fog makes a push to the east, but it stays at the shoreline, the dense fog anyway. and as we get to the holiday weekend we'll see the cooling. but not for the entire weekend. we'll get into a steady cooldown thursday friday into the weekend, and then reverse that trend for the holiday on monday. there's a look at that sea breeze, so looking nice out there, but if you're inland, you're going to have to prepare for the heat again. friday, low 90s saturday. not much change and into sunday. this is our coolest day of the workweek. we'll be back with more news after the break. >> another hopeful sign for san francisco. coming up, the top landmarks that people are visiting, the increase they're seeing. and if you're tired of being surprised by chores after renting an airbnb. a new bill could change that. and look who's showing up off the coast. why? we're seeing an increase in killer whale sightings

this time, special counsel jack smith is adjusting the charges against trump, and the man is at the live desk with what is changing in the case. >> yeah, reggie, prosecutors issued a superseding indictment, meaning they're reworking the charges against trump. and this comes after the supreme court ruled this summer that all former presidents receive special immunity for official actions. so the special counsel
6:15 am
is removing aspects of what trump did as president from the charges, and instead is focusing on what trump did as a presidential candidate. the new indictment accuses trump of the same four crimes, including conspiracy to defraud the u.s, obstructing the certification of electoral votes on january 6th, and conspiracy against the right to vote and to have votes counted. trump called the new indictment a, quote, direct assault on democracy. his running mate, j.d. vance, reacted to the changes. >> i think it's clearly an effort to try to do more election interference from jack smith. he should be ashamed of himself. and it's one of the reasons why we have to win, because he should not be anywhere near power. >> the former president denies all wrongdoing in the case. the new charges were filed 70 days before the election. justice department policy discourages prosecutors from filing federal charges against candidates within 60 days of an election. back to you. reggie. >> thanks, amanda. former president trump says he will take part in the abc news debate
6:16 am
with vice president kamala harris. there were some indications that he might back out. one question that remains unsettled what to do with the microphones? will they be muted? will they not, when each candidate is speaking? trump has said that he'd like it on his team wants it off. the harris campaign says it wants the mics on. we'll see what happens. you can watch the abc news presidential debate tuesday, september 10th, right here on abc seven. our coverage starts at 5 p.m. the debate. the debate starts at six. south san francisco based genentech will lay off more people starting the second week of october. more than 90 jobs will be cut, including senior scientists, software engineers, project managers, data analysts. the state filing comes after genentech said it would cut 430 jobs starting this summer. we don't know what departments will be affected, but fierce biotech reported last month genentech is closing its cancer immunology immunology research department. it's not the way you want to end a vacation. getting a list of

chores you have to complete before you can check out a bill on the governor's desk is trying to add more transparency to airbnb bookings. this week, the state senate passed a bill that would require airbnb, airbnb and other short term rental companies to disclose cleaning requirements during the booking process. if the governor signs the bill into law, those rules kick in next july. take a look at this site captured off the coast of monterey bay. wow two pods of killer whales put on quite the show over the weekend for a whale watching group. there's been an increase in orca sightings recently along the coast and they're closer to shore than what we would usually see. marine biologists say the whales are likely searching for food with a peak number of humpback whales now in their foraging grounds off the coast. so you can get the humpback whales. you can get the orca whales. i'm looking at the instagram page right. all kinds of dolphins out there. so now is the time you can go on a three hour. >> you can go on a four hour, you can go all day 8 to 12
6:18 am
hours. that's a long time in september and october, apparently the peak times to see orcas. >> so if that is your jam, then get out there. i'm going. i'm going to find a time to go. >> brennan, you say this every year. if you don't see these whales this year, i know this. >> we never know. tomorrow is not promised. >> they're telling you, you know, they they're going to be out there waiting for you. >> you know, if you just take a not just but taking a drive to stinson, you're up. so high. and before you come right down on the coast there, sometimes you can see, i mean, it's far away. yeah. you can see some activity out there. >> that would be cool. >> yeah. bring some binoculars. anyway, beach time, the past couple of days has been kind of cloudy, but we had a limited sun and half moon bay and some late clearing other days, but the fog is right at the coast. the deck of low clouds is very compressed, so only five to maybe 700ft. that's because high pressure, the weight of the atmosphere pushing down on it. we have another day of 5 to 10
6:19 am
degrees above average readings, especially inland. but right now it is certainly a gorgeous view and cool from half moon bay to san francisco. at 5760 in oakland, mid 60s hayward and san jose, and looking at our sutro tower camera, you can see the clouds there. but the sunshine will be with us all day long. and a quick warm up again. 63 by the delta 62 livermore concord at 57. and as we look at our forecast headlines, hot weather again today inland we had 101 in livermore, i should say 99 in livermore, 101 in san rafael. so i think we'll come down maybe 2 to 3 degrees, probably won't notice it, but tonight, with the dense fog at the coast, it does make an eastward track across the bay that will initiate a stronger sea breeze, slightly more fog in the morning hours, and start our cool down. that will last for the first part of the long labor day holiday in the south bay today. look for highs on the warm side with 90 in san jose today. that's above average 87 santa clara peninsula
6:20 am
numbers from the upper seconds in redwood city, the sea breeze kicking up throughout the afternoon with 81. menlo park, palo alto, 82. so not as hot, but still above average 73 downtown. plenty of sunshine up in the north bay. 93. sonoma and lakeport with 100. in ukiah, the east bay will see temperatures ranging from the upper 70s in berkeley. so warm for you, but pleasant. 82 in san leandro with 88. castro valley and heading inland, it's going to be about 96 in concord, so pretty much where you were yesterday, the accuweather seven day forecast cooling starts tomorrow as the temperatures begin to moderate. they'll continue to come down friday, saturday, sunday. still pleasant over the weekend, but a warm up for monday and next tuesday. back to you. >> now we're going to bring in ginger zee with a look at what's happening on gma. >> hi ginger. >> hi, reggie. kumasi nice to be with you. so we'll start here on a wednesday with record breaking heat for parts of the country. we saw a bunch of records

6:23 am

few more degrees. and this would be average for this time of year, but 5 to 10 degrees above average where at 1:00 topping out in the low 90s. but by later on in the afternoon we're in the mid to some upper seconds again for our warmest spots. some upper 80s around the bay shore, and that fog sits right at the coast. that's going to make more of a push inland tonight. and that's going to set the stage for cooler days ahead beginning thursday into part of the weekend. amanda. hi lisa. >> yeah, i'm going to leave you here with some current drive times, 57 minutes for that typical slowdown from tracy to dublin, 17 minutes from san rafael to san francisco and then antioch to concord. that drive will take you 32 minutes. but back to dublin and even slower commute there as. all right lanes remain closed because of an earlier incident that happened at around 3 a.m, a dump truck crashed into an overhead sign where construction was already blocking the two right lanes. we are seeing heavy traffic approaching stoneridge drive and then to the richmond

6:35 am
a coalition of unions protested before the meeting. they are calling out the staffing shortage in the district, and also demanding that state financial monitors speed up hiring. currently, there are more than 100 teacher vacancies in the district and the district says they are working with fiscal advisers and labor partners to hire for vacant positions. some parents and community members pushed back against the proposed closures at last night's meeting. >> and i don't think that school closures are going to fix this issue at all. it's only going to inflame it. we're going to just see our schools balloon in numbers. it's going to stress out our staff. >> we need to have school sizes that allow for us to have predictable resources at our school. we do want to use our buildings. we've invested millions of dollars into, you know, upgrading some facilities that we want our students to take advantage of that. and we're asking our community, that is district superintendent matt wayne. >> he says it can better support
