public schools would need to come up with a plan. >> and taking a live look at sfo this morning, the airport is expecting a big bump in travelers for the labor day holiday. we're there. live with what you need to know whether you're flying or driving this weekend. and good morning to you. it is thursday, august 29th. >> yes, it's starting with a check of our forecast with lisa. >> hi there. good morning to you. we certainly cooled off yesterday. parts of the bay but upper 90s yesterday common inland once again low clouds and fog have made it further onshore. and so we're starting out. cloudy around the bay. well, it's clear in concord, livermore, san jose and by the delta 62 in palo alto we are 63. in hayward, up into the north bay, looking at temperatures in the upper 50s. 54 in novato. so a cool start out there, anywhere from two to about six degrees cooler. the coast is slightly milder. and as we go through the next several hours, the fog does make that final push inland. so as we get to 9:00, still looking at clouds around the bay and temperatures are slower to warm by about 11:00, we've got some

mid and upper 70s and the afternoon we'll be into the 80s. it will be warm, but stopping at about 90 degrees this afternoon, 1:00 in the mid 80s. and we're going to keep the clouds at the coast by 4:00. it's another nice afternoon but certainly cooler than yesterday. that trend continues. i'll tell you when the temperatures will bottom ou. amanda. >> hi, lisa. yeah, that commute along the altamont pass, you can see it's already being reflected in our overall map. otherwise it is pretty calm and quiet. but i will take you into hayward. southbound 880 before industrial parkway. we are noticing a two car crash, but there are no delays. there however, you will notice debris in the two middle lanes. i'll get you to your drive times. that 880 fremont to san jose you see at 14 minutes. albany to the maze four minutes 101 to cupertino. that will take you ten minutes. and then to the south bay 101. and in the 880 overcrossing getting a little busy, but not too bad as to be expected here at the top of the hour, let's get back to the

desk. >> thanks, amanda. new details in that deadly wrong-way crash in south san jose earlier this week, the santa clara medical center, santa clara county medical examiner, i should say, has identified the 47 year old woman killed in the crash and the teenage boy also killed in that same vehicle has not been named. the suspect was seen driving in the wrong direction for several miles. he has not yet been charged. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with witnesses about what happened and legal experts about what charges the driver might face. >> this is previously unseen cell phone video showing a toyota tacoma pickup truck going the wrong way on highway 85 in san jose, shortly before the driver slammed into a tesla, killing the two people inside. the video was recorded monday by norm juarez, who had son from sm driving at 6570, but the truck is very more faster. chp hasn't said how fast the driver was going, but you can see in this

dash cam video he whizzed right by other vehicles going the opposite way. the santa clara county medical examiner says 47 year old rebecca joann olson of san jose died in the wreck. a 14 year old boy was killed, too, but his name has not been released. both were inside the tesla driver of the pickup was hospitalized with major injurie. we aren't naming him since he hasn't been charged. investigators say they are looking at felony manslaughter charges, second degree murder is not off the table at this point. >> a lot is going to come down to the toxicology results that we will receive later. were there any prescription drugs or alcohol or street drugs in his system at the time of this crash? reporter. >> that's legal analyst steven clark, who says they'll also look at this driver's criminal history. initial online records show he has previously been convicted of dui in florida. >> what investigators are going

to want to know is what was his mindset at the time of this driving. they're going to want to talk to people who were with him that day. was there something going on in his life that could suggest that perhaps this was intentional? >> as bad as this crash was, juarez says, it could have been worse. as other drivers dodged the pickup. so it nearly hit the cars. the three cars before the crash. >> yeah, before. and scary. i say if i come a little minute before, maybe me. >> officers also confirm that the pickup truck driver had been going the wrong way for more than ten minutes. many people online are very concerned about that. >> it's a legitimate question to ask whether there was some law enforcement component that could have interceded more quickly. >> chp says that at last check, the suspect is still alive and

in the hospital. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> a bill to restrict smartphones in classrooms all over the state is heading to the governor's desk. the phone free schools act passed the legislature on wednesday. that requires all public schools in california to create a policy by july of 2026 to limit or ban smart phones during the school day. governor gavin newsom is expected to sign the bill after calling on schools to implement restrictions twice this summer. california would be the fifth state to require school districts to limit students phone use. >> some reparations for black californians are just a signature away from becoming reality here in california. state lawmakers approved two bills that now head to the governor's desk. one would compensate people who had their land taken by the state in racially motivated instances of eminent domain. a second offers a formal apology from the state to black californians for human rights violations as a result of slavery, and anti-black

policies. the author of that bill says it will help start the healing process to be able to get rid of all of that river of racism that has been going through the african american community and it starts with the apology. it's been a four year process. these are the first proposals from california's reparations task force to get full legislative approval. the abc seven originals documentary. california's case for reparations, dives into the groundbreaking work of the reparations task force and examines bills that came out of it. you can watch it any time it's streaming right now on demand on the abc seven bay area app. >> former president donald trump is facing backlash over photos taken at arlington national cemetery. the new controversy comes as vice president kamala harris is catching up in key battleground states. amanda at the live desk with more on both. >> reggie. the controversy involving former president trump is about whether his campaign had permission to take photos at the arlington national cemetery.

federal law prohibits political campaign or election related activities within army national military cemeteries. on monday, mr. trump's tiktok posted his visit to the grave of a soldier killed during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. npr reports his campaign was asked not to take photos, which then led to a verbal and physical altercation between two of trump's campaign officials and a cemetery staffer. some families of the fallen soldiers said they allowed trump to photograph the event. however, one family did not. his running mate, jd vance, defended him on the campaign trail. >> he was there providing emotional support to a lot of brave americans who lost loved ones. they never should have lost, and there happened to be a camera there and somebody gave him permission to have that camera there. >> a new poll shows trump leading in swing state north carolina. vp harris is leading in arizona, nevada and georgia. today, former president trump will talk about the economy in

holiday weekend compared to last year. and that travel rush starts today. it goes through tuesday. tsa is also anticipating its busiest labor day travel period on record. at sfo, they're expecting 900,000 people to travel to and from the airport for the labor day holiday weekend. they're almost at pre-pandemic levels. sfo spokesperson doug yakel tells me about a trend they're seeing at the airport. >> we're at about 110% for international travel. it's really the domestic side that's lagging a little bit, and that's primarily because business travel has yet to recover back to those pre-pandemic levels >> one welcome source of relief lower prices. analysts say that airfare, gas prices and overall travel costs are down compared to last year and yeakel recommends giving yourself, of course, plenty of extra time if you're traveling this weekend. get to the airport two hours before domestic flight, three

hours before an international flight. live at sfo gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> good morning to you. thursday morning and we've got more fog this morning with that stronger marine push that's going to allow for a cooler day today. still a few 90s out towards antioch and brentwood. but overall we're certainly coming down with temperatures in line where they should be for this time of year. it is 60 in fremont, 56 in sonoma with 58 downtown. a look outside there with the cooling trend continues today. tonight, more low clouds and fog, spotty drizzle with us. and then for the holiday weekend, the temperatures continue to come down and they will bottom out on sunday with a recovery into labor day. as we look at the low cloud deck this morning, you'll notice it gets that push inland and then it retreats as we go through the afternoon. but into tonight you'll see it all the way towards the delta, the mist and drizzle along the shoreline, and that will allow for the

temperatures, of course, to come down. but as we look at our inland valleys today, notice the warmest temperatures will have that quick warm up again with 70s by 10:00. low 90s, 3:00, and then they'll be dropping off into the 8:00 hour. so still a warm day out there. a little bit above average out towards the delta. but take a look at this next panel on the last frame. we're going to be comfortable in our inland valleys the next several days with little change for you in pleasant hills, san ramon, we get that dip on sunday, but then by tuesday we're back to some excessive heat and perhaps some really strong. maybe not strong, but nonetheless, northerly winds that we're going to have to watch out for. 91 in concord today, 72 in richmond. look for 73 san mateo, palo alto 76. so much cooler today. the accuweather seven day forecast. so that heat relief throughout the entire weekend. and then as we get into the latter part of the long weekend, we'll warm it back up again. back to you. >> thanks, lisa. serving up

and slow down the ongoing fentanyl epidemic. an effort to build a better bay area. people skilled at making beverages and serving customers are now being taught how to treat overdoses. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on the push to serve up safety. >> from mixing a drink to serving up potentially life saving naloxone spray and fentanyl test strips firsthand, i've seen narcan at work on these streets, so it's important to have the legionnaires saloon in oakland is working to keep people safe. as the drug overdose crisis continues. >> having the test strips and

the narcan on hand is kind of vital, honestly, to the point that, like most of us, keep it on us, like in our purses, like in our backpacks as we're walking down the street. >> the bar is teaming up with fenske, a nonprofit working with bars and nightclubs to help supply resources and education. >> a lot like the free condoms that you'd see during the aids crisis in bar bathrooms. we've been doing that with fentanyl test strips, allowing people to have anonymous and free access to fentanyl test strips allow people to check drugs like cocaine and heroin for the presence of the powerful opioid, and resting beside the strips is naloxone nasal spray, best known as narcan. we also make sure that narcan, the life saving drug, is out there in all of these bars and all of these nightlife, and we educate bartenders on how to reverse an overdose. >> and this saturday on international overdose awareness day, that training will be happening right here. how does it feel to know that you are equipped? >> i feel secure, i feel like

there's not going to be someone dying on my hands and beforehand, that's quite literally a possibility these days. >> and she says it's about serving everyone, not just the people at their bar, even the people on the streets that need the help, too. >> you know what i mean? it's community. it's not just the people that are patrons of this bar, it's the people outside too. you know what i mean? >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> a 14 year old boy is recovering after he was brutally attacked in the locker room of dublin high school. police say the boy was first confronted by a mother with her daughter. he ran into the locker room but was followed by four people believed to be between 16 and 19 years old. all of them were wearing hoodies and masks. the boy's mother tells us he was hit several times and the football coach and other students eventually broke up. the fight. >> his blood was everywhere, all over the floor, and he was sitting on a bench in front of

his locker and he was just screaming at the top of his lungs. nobody helped me. how could four adults attack me? five adults. >> police confirmed this incident wasn't random, but that the boy was mistakenly identified by the attackers. he had a broken nose, concussion black eye. he's not going to be able to play in the first football game of the season because of his injuries. no arrests have been made. school resource officers continue to investigate. >> a new in-n-out is opening in the bay area. there's no opening date, but the company's website says an in-n-out is coming soon to hayward. the location is hiring and offering a starting wage of $23 an hour, with the potential to earn up to 26.50 an hour. the in-n-out will be on harter avenue near cal state east bay's hayward campus. this new restaurant comes after the chain, for the first time in its history, closed a location. it was along the hegenberger corridor in oakland. that

location cited crime as the reason it closed in march. >> a man in northeast ohio is trying to change the stigma around skunks. derek paramore wants people to know you do not have to call the exterminator if there's a skunk in your yard. he says the animals are misunderstood and they make great emotional support. pets. paramore owns a skunk named valentine. he goes around letting people hold or pet valentine to prove they don't mean any harm. the state's annual skunk fest returns in two weeks, >> okay. >> they say emotional support they brought me so much emotional. just. i don't even know what to call it. they. my dog was sprayed when i first started the mornings. i'm sorry. i had to legitimately text stifter and say, hey, i'm so sorry, i am going to smell. i can't get this smell off of me. it's oil that gets transferred

onto everything. you stink for weeks. >> this happened to you on the way to work? no, no. okay, wait. >> right before i moved to morning. so i was working the night shift for quite some time here. and then when i moved to mornings, i was just about to start. dog got sprayed, everything smelled. i was going to start on a monday. i had to text stifter because he and i were going photographer. he's a photographer and we were going to be working in a van for eight hours and i had to apologize. so this emotional support, i'm not about it. >> emotional trauma. >> what did you do? trauma. eventually. did you have to wash everything in? well, mothballs. >> my husband and i, we went to the mall to get all these new clothes. and when we were getting when the woman was ringing us up, she was like, do you smell that? do you smell that? and my husband and i were like, yeah, what is that? >> can you ring me up, please? we gotta go. >> oh, no. we rushed out of there. i was so embarrassed. all right, so this is traumatic. >> i cannot yeah, well, we have a number. we can call him.

>> how's the weather today? >> lisa, you do need to set up a hotline, because immediately i felt it. >> my dog got sprayed. you ready for that? no. i'm kidding. not kidding. he did get sprayed. but my story is not like amanda's. we just have been through it. got through it somehow. yeah didn't smell as bad. it wasn't as bad. but i'm sorry about that. thank you. >> i'm living it again. >> all right. we're looking at low clouds. fog pushing across the bay this morning. and that is going to allow for a cooler day today. yesterday we cooled down significantly. and more so today. but we had those upper 90s inland. so while we cooled around the bay it was still quite hot. so today about seven degrees of cooling east of the caldecott tunnel. and our hot spots around fairfield and antioch, we already saw the numbers come down around the bay. right now it is 62. in oakland, 60 in fremont, 56 in sonoma. and those winds, certainly a key source of that

cooling, bringing in that marine air and transporting it further into our inland valleys there. so the winds up to about 30 miles an hour. today we'll be looking at much of the same weather the next couple of days before we see the numbers bottom out on sunday. as for today, look for 82 in fremont and napa with 74 in oakland. just in the 60s. today, san francisco you manage 68. yesterday 91 in concord and along the peninsula. notice no 80s there. low 70s san mateo with mid 80s in san jose. so taking it a couple of days further into your friday notice upper 80s for concord danville 87. we've got 60s and 70s across the bay, slower clearing into the weekend, but notice it's nice up in wine country if you have plans there over saturday. low 80s for you in the south bay and on sunday notice just a few degrees cooler. so we'll get into this cooldown. we got into it yesterday and then each and every day trimming those temperatures. the accuweather

temperatures in the 60s here. low clouds and fog for most of us, except in san jose. right now, concord is clear at 59. livermore is clear at 58. taking you up to the north bay, where we have that low cloud. deck 56 in sonoma, 57 santa rosa. so the winds kicked up yesterday. that marine layer moving across the bay overnight. we are 2 to 6 degrees cooler from hayward and san jose. so the cool down spreads around the bay. and as we look at the temperatures throughout the morning hours will be in the 50s and 60s with the clouds for most of you. and then towards noontime it's sunny. it's near 70 around the bay, near 80 inland. but by the afternoon, those low 90s just out towards brentwood and antioch, if you're in the san ramon valley and concord, you'll more likely be in the upper 80s mid 70s for you around the bay shore. and looking at that cooler evening as that sets the stage for a cooler weekend. hopefully a quieter day today around the bay. traffic wise. amanda. >> well, it's actually pretty

people starting to arrive for their flights this morning, and tsa is anticipating its busiest labor day travel period on record. as the travel rush starts today, there is one source of relief for travelers lower prices. analysts say that gas prices, airfare and overall travel costs are down compared to last year. sfo is expecting nearly 9% more travelers this labor day holiday compared to last year, with 900,000 people expected to travel to and from the airport for the labor day holiday weekend. and they're almost at pre-pandemic levels. sfo spokesperson doug yagel tells me labor day weekend closes out the busy summer travel season. >> it used to be that our peak day of the entire year typically happened in july or august, whereas the last couple of year, one of the days around labor day tends to be some of the busiest days. so what that tells us in terms of travel behavior is people are taking more vacations at the tail end of the summer,

to you at the desk. thanks, amanda. >> abc seven news is following the story of a controversial tow company in san francisco. specialty tow went viral after its truck was seen on this video trying to tow a moving car. now the owner is facing new charges. the justice department says jose vicente badillo wrecked cars to receive insurance money, but dio and three others are charged with conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud. that's in connection with two schemes to defraud auto insurance companies. but dio and his wife were arrested this month after the fbi raided their home. they were charged with money laundering and fraud. he is scheduled to be arraigned in court tomorrow. >> a group of san francisco residents is suing the city. they say a major prostitution problem nearby has spilled over into their street. abc seven news broke the story of prostitution on capp street in the mission district last year. well, now people who live a block or so over on shotwell street say all that prostitution has just moved over there. five

residents announced the lawsuit yesterday. they say they've tried everything from marches to protest the illicit sex trade to confronting pimps and sex workers outside of their homes. >> and we ask you to leave right as she turned around and she sprayed me with mace and my eyes were all burnt. >> it's embarrassing. i hope the city does something about it because i'm fed up. >> the mayor's office responded to the lawsuit, promising new barriers on shotwell street to block drivers who are looking for sex workers. also, new public safety cameras and continued enforcement by sfpd. >> more progress is being made in the crackdown on organized retail theft here in the bay area and across the state. california attorney general rob bonta is expected to announce new charges against multiple suspects later this morning in santa cruz. bonta's office has made combating retail theft a priority in recent months.

in nearly 200 water faucets and fountains across 22 campuses. the district is hoping for financial aid to repair and improve their facilities. new developments in the murder case of oakland police officer tuan lay. prosecutors are dropping all charges against one man accused of being involved in the burglary that led up to lay's death. the alameda county district attorney's office says 35 year old marquis cooper served as a lookout for the burglary. da pamela price didn't give a reason for dropping the charges during a news conference yesterday, but she did say the investigation is ongoing. the oakland police officers association said it was concerned about the move and the message it might send to criminals. three others still face charges for lay's death. >> the state has approved all states requests for the largest rate increase in california of any major insurer in the past three years. this is according to the chronicle, all states homeowners insurance premiums are going to go up by an average

to save salmon is taking a big step forward near the oregon border by removing the last of four dams on the klamath river. the river runs from upper klamath lake in oregon through

>> no, i'm saving one for today. yes, that's like two. >> so much like you. all right. good morning everybody. we are starting out with the clouds. they have reached into oakland and fremont still clear in our inland valleys. but, you know, fairfield has a southwest wind at 23 miles an hour. a good indicator of the cooling trend that will be further pushed into our east bay today. 62 in oakland right now. good morning, san mateo. it is 59 for you with those 50s up in the north bay and the gray start. there's a look at the cloud cover this morning. in the next few hours you notice it just moves across the bay there, not quite reaching the inland valleys, then pulls back. this is 130 and it is gray along our coast. it's breezy and that sea breeze reaching to about 29 miles an hour. but look what happens as we get through tonight. we've got mist and drizzle along the coast, and then that further push of the low cloud deck, maybe about 2000ft, allowing for even slower clearing and that

cooling trend to continue. let's take a look at the weekend, the long holiday weekend where temperatures will be comfortable at or slightly below average. this is saturday, where most of our inland valleys in the upper 80s further out, you've got some low 90s, 60s and 70s. pretty typical across the bay. that doesn't change. and then on sunday it gets even cooler with another 2 to 3 degrees of cooling. so each and every day it is modest, the drop off. and then we'll go back up in the other direction as we get into monday, labor day. so really not that warm, but a little bit warmer than we will be to start the weekend. so it should feel pretty good. and then the extended outlook has a surprise for you. 82 in fremont and napa, 73 san mateo today. so a nice afternoon, but only partial clearing there in the city. 93 in livermore and the accuweather seven day forecast featuring the 90s well inland 70s around the bay. the temperatures trailing off through the weekend. and
