yeah. good morning everybody. the cloud cover has moved across the bay and that will allow for a slower retreat. but temperatures are going to be comfortable today. a cooler than yesterday. we had the cool down by the afternoon. you really felt that in many locations at 63 in hayward, 62 in oakland with upper 50s san francisco and san jose checking in at 60 from our roof camera, we've got plenty of 50s from the north bay with cloudy skies. santa rosa 5759 with the clear sky. concord livermore is at 58 and over in oakland today. the warm up well it's slower. notice the cloud cover throughout the 10:00 hour. then we break out into some sunshine with low 70s throughout the afternoon and the rest of the bay from the upper 80s to the lower 90s. for your three 4:00 hour. and then the numbers begin to slide around. the rest of the bay should be pleasant in the 70s and at the coast, holding on to the cloud cover there. it's going to be cool in the 60s. we'll talk about how much the temperatures come down and when the coolest day will be

coming up. good morning amanda. >> good morning lisa. our current overall map showing a few slow spots across the bay area, including that typical slowdown across the altamont pass. but i will bring you into hayward. that four car crash. southbound 880 before industrial parkway. that has been moved to the shoulder, but it is leaving a backup to a street. there was also a second crash before tennyson road that happened in that backup ten minute delay there. use hesperian boulevard to get around. then we'll take you to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see a bit of a backup kind of forming, but not too bad. metering lights have flipped on. you can see it will take you 43 minutes to get from highway. kumasi. >> thank you amanda. new details in the deadly wrong-way crash in south san jose earlier this week, the santa clara county medical examiner has identified the 47 year old woman who was killed in the crash. the teenage boy also killed in that same vehicle has not been named yet. the suspect was seen driving in the wrong direction for several miles. he hasn't been charged

yet. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with witnesses about what happened and legal experts about what charges that driver may face. >> this is previously unseen cell phone video showing a toyota tacoma pickup truck going the wrong way on highway 85 in san jose, shortly before the driver slammed into a tesla, killing the two people inside. the video was recorded monday by norm juarez, who had just picked up her son from school. >> i'm driving 65 or 70, but the truck is very more faster. >> chp hasn't said how fast the driver was going, but you can see in this dash cam video he whizzed right by other vehicles going the opposite way. the santa clara county medical examiner says 47 year old rebecca joann olson of san jose died in the wreck. a 14 year old boy was killed, too, but his name has not been released. both were inside the tesla driver of the pickup was hospitalized with major injuries. we aren't naming

him since he hasn't been charged. investigators say they are looking at felony manslaughter charges. >> second degree murder is not off the table at this point. a lot is going to come down to the toxicology results that we will receive later. were there any prescription drugs or alcohol or street drugs in his system at the time of this crash? >> that's legal analyst steven clark, who says they'll also look at this driver's criminal history. initial online records show he has previously been convicted of dui in florida. >> what investigators are going to want to know is what was his mindset at the time of driving. they're going to want to talk to people who were with him that day. was there something going on in his life that could suggest that perhaps this was intentional? >> as bad as this crash was, juarez says, it could have been worse. as other drivers dodged

the pickup. so it nearly hit the cars. the three cars before the crash. >> yes, before. and scary. i say if i come a little minutes before, maybe me. >> officers also confirm that the pickup truck driver had been going the wrong way for more than ten minutes. many people online are very concerned about that. >> it's a legitimate question to ask whether there was some law enforcement component that could have interceded more quickly. >> chp says that at last check, the suspect is still alive and in the hospital. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> if you have a kid in public school, this will affect you. a bill to restrict smartphones in classrooms is heading to the governor's desk. the phone free schools act passed the legislature on wednesday. that would require all public schools to create a policy by july of 2026 to limit or ban smartphones

during the school day. governor newsom is expected to sign the bill after calling on schools to implement a restriction twice this summer. california would be the fifth state to require school districts to limit students phone use. >> some reparations for black californians just a signature away from becoming reality in the state. state lawmakers approved two bills that now head to the governor's desk. one would compensate people who had their land taken by the state and racially motivated instances of eminent domain. a second offers a formal apology from the state to black californians for human rights violations. as a result of slavery and anti-black policies. the author of that bill says it will help to start the healing process, to be able to get rid of all of that river of racism that's been going through the african american community. >> and it starts with the apology. >> it's been a four year proces, and these are the first proposals from california's reparations task force to get full legislative approval. the abc seven originals documentary.

california's case for reparations, dives into the groundbreaking work of the reparations task force and examines bills that came out of it. you can watch it any time. it's streaming right now on demand on the abc seven bay area app. happening today, a record number of people are expected to travel for the labor day holiday. all the bay area's major airports will be bustling with travelers. tsa is expecting this to be the busiest labor day travel period. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live at sfo with what you need to know if you are flying or driving this weekend. good morning gloria. >> good morning kumasi. well, one thing you need to know it is pretty busy out here at sfo. this morning. they are expecting nearly 9% more travelers this labor day holiday compared to last year. and that travel rush starts today. it goes through tuesday. tsa is anticipating its busiest labor day travel period on record here at sfo. they are expecting 900,000 people to travel to and from the airport

for the labor day holiday weekend. they are almost at pre-pandemic levels. sfo spokesman doug yakel tells me about a trend they are seeing at the airport. >> we're at about 110% for international travel. it's really the domestic side that's lagging a little bit and that's primarily because business travel has yet to recover back to those pre-pandemic levels. >> and one welcome source of relief lower prices. analysts say that airfare, gas prices and overall travel costs are down compared to last year. and like any busy travel time, yakel recommends getting to the airport early. so two hours before a domestic flight, three hours before an international flight. he also recommends that you book your parking online before you get to the airport. live at sfo gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> and we are looking at south

bay temperatures, but i'm going to flip them around for you for a minute so we can start out with satellite picture, which shows the low clouds and fog not only at the coast, but as we get a closer inspection, you will see that maybe you can't see yet because the sun, not up until 638, that they have moved across the bay. it's still clear inland, and the current numbers are milder here. from oakland to hayward in the low 60s. 62 in redwood city, upper 50s san francisco, and from our roof camera it is quiet out there with the clouds up in the north bay. 55 petaluma 59. clear sky in concord. our forecast headlines, then the cooling trend continues today. it got awfully breezy yesterday. and looking at that fog bringing in some mist and drizzle tonight. holiday weekend the temperatures continue to drop off and numbers here. i was just about to lower them when you caught me to about the low 80s here in san jose. i think it's a little warm, but still pleasant. low 80s for highs, upper 70s. redwood city 70, in millbrae. downtown. look

new controversy comes as vice president kamala harris is catching up in key battleground states. amanda is at the live desk with more on both candidates. amanda kumasi, the controversy involving mr. trump is about whether or not his campaign had permission to take photos at the arlington national cemetery. >> federal law actually prohibits political campaign or election related activities within army national cemeteries. on monday, trump's tik tok

posted his visit to the grave of a soldier killed during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. npr reports his campaign was asked not to take the photos, which then led to a verbal and physical altercation between two of trump's campaign officials and a cemetery staffer. now, some families of the fallen soldiers said they allowed trump to photograph the event. one family did not. his running mate, jd vance, defended him on the campaign trail. >> he was there providing emotional support to a lot of brave americans who lost loved ones. they never should have lost. and there happened to be a camera there and somebody gave him permission to have that camera there. >> a new poll shows former president trump will talk about the economy in michigan and hold a town hall in wisconsin. vp harris has a rally in georgia. back to the desk, kuma>> thanko san francisco without her second gentleman. doug emhoff will be here tomorrow. he'll be speaking at a brunch fundraising event. the time to be determined and the

exact location is only sent to guests. we do know, though, it's not going to be cheap. the tickets start at $25,000. tomorrow's event is happening nearly three weeks after vice president harris made a fundraising stop at the fairmont. nine people accused of stealing from a grocery store in san francisco have been arrested. it happened in the bernal heights neighborhood. san francisco police say of those nine suspects, four were minors. the arrests were part of an operation to crack down on retail theft. sfpd received $15 million from the state last september to address organized retail crime in the city. shake shack announced it's closing nine stores, including the one in oakland's uptown burger chain has closed a location here locae underperforming and all will be closed by the end of september.

a new in-n-out is opening in the bay area. there's no opening date, but the company's website says an in-n-out is on its way to is wage of $23 an hour, with the potential to earn up to $26.50 an hour. the in-n-out will be on arthur avenue near cal state east bay's hayward campus. this new restaurant comes after the chain, for the first time in its history, closed a location it was along hegenberger corridor in oakland. that location cited crime as a reason for closing. back in march. if you're looking for texas style barbecue, look no furer.ccording to a texas magazine, california is the best state outside of texas for that cuisine. texas monthly praised several barbecue joints, including two right here in the bay area. the editor highlighted alameda's fescue craft barbecue for its unique combination of barbecue mixed with indonesian flavors. his must try dishes are the slow cooked curry and smoked

brisket and kale curry. the other bay area spot on the list is breakwater barbecue in el granada. it's just a just north of half moon bay. highlights there include the massive spare ribs that are smoked right outside the restaurant, and i'm going to add a&m barbecue in sebastopol to the list, because i went up there to do a story on them. two guys who came together, they each had their own barbecue restaurants, and so they came together to make their own. the line is always around the block. they're open just on the weekends, and i know why. it's delicious. it's good. i mean, it is so good. >> you know, i haven't had barbnd that was a couple years ago. >> that was a long time ago. yeah, that was a long time ago. >> do you remember i was vegetarian then. >> you did? he just went outside of his. just that one day. >> it was just that. one day. oh, you were just. >> just that day? >> yeah. because i thought if we're going to horn barbecue, like, i'm not going to eat >> i didn't say that. i did not say that.

livermore valley. walnut creek, and from atop vollmer peak. so that marine layer really has spread on out nearly 2000ft deep, 58 by the delta and 55 in petaluma. so it will take some time to clear. and because of that, with less solar radiation will be cooler. and then we've got the sea breeze kicking up this cool marine air pulling back to the coast. and then with that, the sea breeze kicks up. this is your thursday night into friday and the fog is more extensive into our inland valleys and then back to a sunny day. so things certainly getting back to average around here, stopping this throughout the early morning hours. just a light breeze and then watch how it picks up through the 10:00 hour. it's light, but by 4 or 5:00, nearly 30 miles an hour out towards the delta. so temperatures coming down still another five degrees in spots. skipping ahead to your weekend on saturday, where we'll see the numbers all in the 80s for most of us, unless you're well, far

police say that the boy was first confronted by a mother with her daughter. he ran into the locker room and was followed by four people, believed to be between 16 and 19 years old.

they were all wearing hoodies and masks. the boy's mother tells us he was hit several times. the football coach and other students eventually broke up the fight. >> his blood was everywhere, all over the floor, and he was sitting on a bench in front of his locker and he was just screaming at the top of his lungs, nobody help me. how could four adults attack me? five adults. >> police confirmed the incident was not random, but the boy was mistakenly identified by the attackers. he suffered a broken nose, concussion and a black ey, and won't be able to play in the first football game of the season because of those injuries. police have not arrested anyone. school resource officers continue to investigate two major housing projects for farm workers and homeless veterans can move forward now that santa clara county has secured federal funding for these developments. congresswoman zoe lofgren helped secure $2.6 million for the county. 1 million of that will go toward repairing buildings that house homeless veterans. the funds will help buy a new hvac system and fight mold.

minutes and then san francisco to sfo, about a ten minute drive. our south beach cam showing traffic driving a little under the speed limit across the span from the tolls to fifth street. metering lights are on and the tolls those are backed up to west grand avenue. i'm also tracking a major airline bracing for a potential strike. flight attendants with united airlines voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. they announced the results at airports across the country yesterday, including sfo. the airline recently announced profits are up more than 20%. now workers say they deserve a share of those gains, with a double digit pay raise. the median pay for flight attendants is a little more than $68,000, but a first year worker can expect as much as 23 to $32,000, depending on the airline. some say they're struggling to feed their families. >> we have been in three years of negotiations with very minimal progress from a corporation that is making billions on the backs of their

frontline workers. >> they also argue their jobs are getting harder because of unruly passengers. crew members have been seen on video breaking up brawls or enduring violence themselves. united airlines said in a statement we remain eager to reach an agreement. to be clear, there is no work stoppage or labor disruption. 28,000 flight attendants have been in mediation with the company for months. the union says the earliest a strike could happen is toward the end of the year. if a deal is not reached. back to you at the desk. >> amanda. thank you. airports in the bay area are expecting record numbers for labor day travel, with hundreds of thousands of people scheduled to fly out of sfo, oakland and san jose this weekend and triple a, of course, expecting plenty of people on the roads. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live from sfo with more on what we can expect ahead of the holiday. gloria >> good morning. reggie. what you can expect a busy airport. we're seeing a lot of people arriving here at sfo for their morning flights. i just talked

to passenger who says he's expecting a crowded airport, but he wasn't too worried about it. tsa says that they are anticipating their busiest labor day travel period on record. and as the labor day holiday rush starts today, there is one source of relief for travelers lower prices. analysts say that gas prices, airfare and overall travel costs are down compared to last year. sfo is expecting nearly 9% more travelers this labor day holiday compared to last year, with 900,000 people expected to travel to and from the airport for the labor day holiday weekend. they're almost at prepandemic levels. sfo spokesperson doug yakel tells me that labor day weekend closes out the busy summer travel season, as it used to be, that our peak day of the entire year typically happened in july or august, whereas the last couple of years, one of the days around labor day tends to be some of the busiest days. >> so what that tells us in

terms of travel behavior is people are taking more vacations at the tail end of the summer, and that's good for us as an airport. >> and as always, when it's busy at the airport. yakel recommends giving yourself extra time, especially if you're flying this weekend. so get to the airport two hours before domestic flight, three hours before an international flight, and you might see a lot of people out and about this labor day here in the area. that's because san francisco is one of the top ten domestic travel destinations for labor day. live at sfo gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. abc seven news is following the story of a controversial tow company here in san francisco. specialty tow went viral after its truck was seen on this video trying to tow a moving car. now, the owner of the company is facing new charges. the justice department says jose vicente badillo wrecked cars to receive insurance money, but dio and three others are charged with conspiracy, mail fraud and wire

fraud. that's in connection with two schemes to defraud auto insurance companies. but dio and his wife got arrested this month after the fbi raided their home. they were charged with money laundering and fraud. he is scheduled to be arraigned in court tomorrow. >> a group of san francisco residents is suing the city. they say a major prostitution problem nearby has spilled over onto their street. abc seven news broke the story of prostitution on capp street in the mission district last year. will now people living a block over or so on shotwell street say all the prostitution has migrated there? five residents announced their lawsuit yesterday and they say they've tried everything from marches to protest the illicit sex trade to confronting pimps and sex workers outside their home. >> and we ask you to leave right as she turned around and she sprayed me with mace and my eyes were all burnt. it's embarrassing. >> i hope the city does something about it because i'm

fed up. >> the mayor's office responded to the lawsuit, promising new barriers on shotwell street to block drivers looking for sex workers. also, new public safety cameras and continued enforcement by sfpd. >> more progress being made in the crackdown on organized retail theft here in the bay area and across the state. california attorney general rob bonta is expected to announce new charges against multiple suspects later this morning in santa cruz. bonta's office has made combating retail theft a priority in recent months. earlier this month, governor newsom signed ten new bills into law to combat retail crime and the sale of stolen goods. the new laws are expected to bring more serious penalties and sentences. >> oakland city leaders will continue a series of town hall discussions this evening. this will be the fourth of five gatherings for citizens to express concerns about crime and violence. mayor shengtao and police chief floyd mitchell will be taking up taking part once again. this evening's town hall will be held at allen temple

baptist church in east oakland. the final town hall is tomorrow at the oakland asian cultural center in chinatown. >> oakland unified held its first public meeting since lead was found in the pipes at nearly two dozen schools. district leaders struggled to control a crowd of angry parents and apologize for a delay in notifying them about the lead. they say it took an average of 62 days between the time water samples were received and when schools were notified. leaders called that unacceptable and blamed the delay on a personnel issue. ousd announced last week high levels of lead were found in nearly 200 water faucets and fountains across 22 campuses. the district is hoping for financial aid to repair and improve their facilities. >> homeowners insurance in california has been turbulent, to say the least. we are now seeing the largest rate increase in recent history and the oakland ballers are changing the game. >> fans come together. they invested in the independent

the democratic county central committee voted to back prop k, paving the way for a new park on the highway. voters will decide in november if the road will stay open, or if the city will turn the area into an oceanside park. it would affect a two mile stretch between sloat boulevard and lincoln way. residents who oppose that new park are concerned about the traffic impact. we're seeing new tactics and new places to try and slow down the ongoing fentanyl epidemic. an effort to build a better bay area. people skilled at making beverages and serving customers are now being taught how to treat overdoses. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on the push to serve up safety. >> from mixing a drink to

serving up potentially life saving naloxone spray and fentanyl test strips firsthand, i've seen narcan at work on these streets, so it's important to have the legionnaires saloon in oakland is working to keep people safe. as the drug overdose crisis continues. >> having the test strips and the narcan on hand is kind of vital, honestly, to the point that like most of us, keep it on us, like in our purses, like in our backpacks as we're walking down the street. >> the bar is teaming up with fence check, a nonprofit working with bars and nightclubs to help supply resources and education. >> a lot like the free condoms that you'd see during the aids crisis in bar bathrooms. we've been doing that with fentanyl test strips, allowing people to have anonymous and free access to fentanyl test strips allow people to check drugs like cocaine and heroin for the presence of the powerful opioid, and resting beside the strips is naloxone nasal spray, best known as narcan. we also make sure that narcan, the life saving

lookout for the burglary. da pamela price didn't give a reason for dropping the charges during a news conference yesterday, but she did say the investigation is ongoing. the oakland police officers association said it was concerned about the move and the message it might send to criminals. three others still face charges for lay's death. >> the state has approved all states requests for the largest rate increase in california of any major insurer in the past three years. this is according to the chronicle. all states homeowners insurance premiums will be going up by an average of 34% for more than 350,000 customers. policyholders will see the increase on their bill at their first renewal date following november 7th. the insurer cited higher repair costs, frequent severe weather events and legal system abuse for the increase. >> some oakland ballers fans will have the opportunity to make game day decisions this weekend. the game appreciated the fan base that has raised more than $1 million in

investments. last week, the independent minor league baseball team opened ownership to fans. they passed the $1 million mark with more than 1600 fan investors. the goal of the campaign is to challenge traditional team ownership and give a voice to the fans. owners will have their first experience with this on august 31st at fan appreciation day. they'll vote through an app on decisions like the starting lineup and helping set game day strategy. fans will also elect a leader to represent them on the team's board of directors. >> santa clara marked its first ever celebration of name and gender marker change. many called it a powerful moment for trans visibility. several people were able to legally get their names and gender marker changed in a santa clara courtroom. the community says the changes can be extremely meaningful to many in the lgbtq plus community. >> something as simple as getting pulled over, like you could be driving your own vehicle and then be assumed to steal your own vehicle because you might look more masculine

after the fight is over, firefighters wash off the tomatoes and the acid from the tomatoes apparently leaves the streets clean. the paralympics is making sure everyone can watch with new headsets that help those who are visually impaired. give vision, a uk startup designed these headsets and they have their own camera, which means the user can zoom in on what they'd like to see. they can also connect to local tv cameras and adjust the image to suit their degree of sight loss. headset users got to see the opening ceremony up close. >> there's been quite a few tears actually over the time, and it's quite hard not to tear up yourself when you're seeing someone having this kind of moment where they're seeing something clearly again for the first time in a long time. >> this is the first time the headsets have been available at the paralympics, but they were used recently at the 2024 paris olympics. give vision, hopes and new tech will help people who are visually impaired feel more

one, a 47 year old woman who was killed in monday's wrong-way crash in san jose has been identified as rebecca joann olsen. the 14 year old boy who died has not been named. the wrong-way driver has not been charged yet, but investigators say he could face felony manslaughter charges. >> number two, police say the attack on a 14 year old boy in the dublin high school locker room was a case of mistaken identity. the boy was beaten by four people after he was confronted by a mother on campus. he suffered a broken nose, concussion and a black eye. police haven't arrested anyone. >> number three former president donald trump facing backlash for taking campaign photos and videos at arlington national cemetery. that's prohibited. his campaign says it got permission from families of fallen soldier. but npr is reporting two trump campaign staff members quote verbally abused and pushed aside a cemetery employee who was trying to stop them.
