daetz. we are now hearing from the father of the teen for the first time. >> abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has been following this story and is in the newsroom with the very latest on this just tragic story. >> it is just so heartbreaking. we now know the name of that 14 year old boy. and today that was released, his mother's name released yesterday. now the boy's heartbroken father released a statement and shared photos with us all while coping with what he's called the ultimate nightmare for a parent. these pictures, taken around christmas, are from the trip of a lifetime for rebecca olson and her son charlie. the two of them tragically lost their lives monday in a wrong-way crash on highway 85 in san jose. those photos were shared with abc seven by charlie's father, cameron olson. in a statement on social media, he said losing a child is the ultimate nightmare for a parent. this week has been a roller coaster of both functional and emotional elements. it feels like it has been weeks, and i know the next few months will be hell. the crash happened that monday afternoon after a driver traveling for several minutes in the wrong direction hit them.

naomi juarez witnessed the erratic driving and shot this cell phone video. that truck, not only traveling in the wrong direction, she said, but also moving at intense speeds. >> so i'm driving 65 or 70 and the express line, but the truck is very more faster. >> the driver of the pickup was hospitalized with major injuries. we aren't naming him since he hasn't yet been charged. investigators say they're looking at felony manslaughter charges. part of that investigation will look into why the driver was going the wrong way and where he came from. as that investigation goes on, lives are forever changed. cameron olson said he and rebecca olson were from australia. 14 year old charlie was born in the uk. they moved to san jose 12 years ago for cameron's job at a local tech company. charlie had just started ninth grade at summit tahoma high school in san jose, loved his studies and was already excelling. his dad went on to say that charlie had traveled 30 plus countries in his short life. in his statement, cameron said of charlie, he was my best friend,

my travel buddy, and the only person i ever truly felt at home with. and cameron olson wrote that reddit post to thank the many people who have shared kind words. he said he's seen a lot of people express anger at the driver. he said right now he's not feeling that. he says he just wants his son back. he urges every parent to give their child an extra hug for him, and to put down their phones and truly connect with intention. he also pleads with everyone to slow down and be safe on the roads. in the newsroom, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> just heartbreaking. okay zach. thank you. >> we have developing news in the north bay, a stretch of westbound highway 12 has reopened in santa rosa after a deadly crash there involving 11 vehicles. the fiery crash happened just before noon east of fulton road. one person was killed, eight others were hurt and taken to hospitals. the chp says a big rig dump truck carrying dirt didn't stop in time in traffic and caused a chain reaction pileup. >> pretty bad collision. we just remind everyone to slow down and be aware of your surroundings,

and always pay attention to the roadway. >> the big rig driver is cooperating with the investigation. highway 12 was shut down between fulton and stony point roads. >> a photo from a witness led to the arrest of a suspected hit and run driver, who injured a baby in a stroller. on monday, a man was crossing alcatraz avenue in berkeley with his nine month old daughter when a car hit them. a witness took a photo of the car's license plate, which was picked up yesterday by a license plate camera in san leandro. now, that led police to the suspected driver. the child suffered broken bones and a head injury. she is now out of the hospital. >> now to breaking news. out of the north bay, a grass fire is burning two miles west of petaluma right now. cal fire says it's near bodega avenue and middle to rock road. so far, it's charred about 30 acres. so far, no evacuations have been ordered, and we have not heard whether the flames have burned any structures. but you can see the smoke coming off of it right there in this. >> state and local authorities

are taking credit for breaking up what they're calling an organized retail burglary ring that targeted cannabis dispensaries all across california. state attorney general rob bonta says oakland and santa cruz county officers led the operation, arresting 22 people. they're accused of breaking into 15 dispensaries and stealing nearly 1,000 pounds of cannabis, totaling more than $1 million. >> our message to those involved in these crimes is, and has been unwavering. if you organize coordinated retail thefts, if you steal from our businesses and put people, our people in harm's way, if you try to make an easy buck off of other people's hard work, we will come for you. >> bonta says the scheme targeted dispensaries over the course of nine months throughout the state, including santa cruz, solano and sonoma counties. the suspects are charged with commercial burglary, grand theft, organized retail theft and conspiracy. >> san francisco state is

promising to divest from companies that do business with israel as part of the demands set by students protesting the war in gaza back in may. and now, as abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains, they are calling this a win. free, free, free free palestine. >> some students and staff at san francisco state university are celebrating a historic win. the university will divest from four companies that do business in israel. >> we were able to be the first university to divest from major weapons manufacturers, including lockheed martin, caterpillar plant here and leonardo sfsu. >> students were part of the nationwide gaza protest encampments in may. the university even held an open negotiation session with students. students peacefully dismantle the encampments at the end of the school year, with the goal that negotiations would continue over the summer. to say we do not want education to be invested in the killing apparatuses of the state and global imperialism. reporter in a statement, the san francisco state university foundation says

in part, the results of this plan will strengthen the foundation's stated commitment to reflect the university's values while also increasing transparency around investments. sfsu professor valerie francisco chavez says the university has a history of antiwar activism, but that even this divestment agreement is huge. >> we see as faculty what students can really do when they organize and they stay united and have a just cause in mind, which is to stop the genocide in palestine. >> but communications professor lonnie brooks at cal state east bay believes this is more of a symbolic win because he doesn't believe it will change what's happening on the ground in gaza. >> this type of divestment actually kind of fuels the fire to support the far right, uh, settler colonialist rhetoric of the israeli government. >> but for palestinian student mahmoud ali, he says a win is a win. >> there is no victories in genocide, but it sets a precedent. it sets an example for other schools that it is possible to divest and to get

these wins. if we don't speak for the palestinians, then who will? >> in a statement to abc seven news, lockheed martin responded by saying we respect the right to peacefully protest and remain focused on supporting the u.s. government and its allies to deliver strategic deterrence and security solutions. in san francisco, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> at the state capitol, a landmark bill on the safety of artificial intelligence is now on governor newsom's desk. it's designed to prevent ai systems from being used to hurt humanity in catastrophic ways. but as abc seven news reporter suzanne phan explains, some worry these regulations could stifle innovation and drive companies out of california. >> should i be regulated and how? >> those are the key questions california lawmakers are grappling with right now. >> there are safety risks. >> senator scott wiener has authored the most comprehensive ai regulation bill to date. >> this bill applies only to large tech companies that are spending more than $100 million

to develop the most powerful ai models on the planet. >> the bill requires the largest tech companies to perform a safety evaluation for catastrophic risk, to determine if the model creates a risk of catastrophic harm, like shutting down the electric grid or melting down the banking system or making it much easier to create a chemical, biological, or nuclear weapon. the bill is divided. silicon valley and california leaders. tech billionaire elon musk supports the measure as a way to help mitigate potential risks to the public. mayor london breed opposes it, saying she's concerned about its impact on the city's economy. senator wiener countered that argument. >> this bill will not in any way harm san francisco's recovery. >> prominent democratic leaders, including former house speaker nancy pelosi, indicated the federal government should be regulating ai. ahmed bonafe is a

got lobsters coming out of my ears. okay, so i looked it up and i said, oh, you've got to take it to the recycling places. and there's hardly any recycling places around. >> the cal recycle website shows he's right. there are only 19 places to take recycling in san jose, and only seven are recycling centers like this one on meridian, near fabian's home. but he knows others have an even tougher time. >> people would have to drive 1015 miles just to return a bag of cans. i mean, that's nuts. that's not facilitating the recycling. >> for years, seven on your side has reported on efforts to improve california's beverage container recycling program, including stalled efforts to launch mobile collection trucks. but a new initiative hopes to be different, with $70 million in state beverage container redemption innovation grants. calrecycle plans to provide more than 250 new recycling options across 30 counties. >> i think you would be able to get more people to, to, to, to

yes. good looking weather for dan's birthday. for any of your plans for the holiday weekend, let me show you a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera. we are seeing blue sky out there with some low clouds in the distance. if you are getting away, just a gorgeous view right now. we're going to see a combination of clouds and sun like we're seeing right now. most areas are running cooler than where they were yesterday by six degrees in san jose, livermore and santa rosa. as we check out the winds, they are onshore. that's contributing to the cooling right now. 21 in san francisco, gusting to 23 in oakland. your temperatures got up into the low 90s for our warmest spots. right now you're comfortable in the 60s to the 80s as we check out the three day forecast for the labor day weekend. morning clouds will give way to sunshine on saturday. mid 60s to low 90s. sunday will be your coolest one for the three day weekend for most areas. the bay. inland partly cloudy and breezy and milder for labor day. mid 60s to the upper 80s. you don't have to

worry about any heat anytime soon. and this is why this area of low pressure is going to move closer to the coastline, and it's going to get cut off from the main stream. the main flow. so for a few days it will prevent the heat from coming into the picture. right now we do have the marine layer on live doppler seven. today's drought monitor just came out. let's talk about it out west. 35% of the state is abnormally dry. that is the shading in yellow. so we're starting to see a little bit of it starting to creep into the far northern portion of our viewing area. of course this is drier time of year. so stay tuned. hopefully winter will change things up. here's a marine layer from our east bay hills camera. overnight tonight, fog spreads. spotty drizzle. labor day weekend. the cooling continues into sunday and starting next tuesday, a big heat up is coming, so enjoy the comfort zone until then as we go hour by hour. the marine layer will branch back out, moving into some of our valleys tonight and then some drizzle in the morning, followed by a lot of

standoff between the 40 niners and wide receiver brandon aiyuk is finally over. he. i know he is going to be staying with the team after agreeing today to a contract extension. reports put the deal at four years, $120 million with 76 million guaranteed. aiyuk will be one of the highest paid wide receivers in the league, making $30 million a year. the drama dominated the 40 niners offseason, particularly after aiyuk requested a trade. >> that's good news and here's great news for warriors fans. steph curry is signing for another year with the dubs, and he's going to get paid handsomely for it. today, steph's agent announced that steph has agreed to a one year, $62.6 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2627 season. steph has two years remaining on his current contract that's paying him 55.8 and $59.6 million, respectively, for each season. according to sports salary website statista, when curry's
