just lost his 14 year old son, and the teenager's mother. writing emotional words that have since connected with so many people. the two were killed this week in a terrifying wrong-way crash on highway 85. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> since the father posted his emotional message about his family, there has been an outpouring of comments and replies coming to his support. >> the family had lived in san jose for more than a decade, the dad telling the chronicle that he and his wife had been divorced and were co-parenting for many of those years. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has been following this story from the start. a grieving san jose father is sharing about his young, bright and adventurous son. on thursday morning, cameron olson posted on reddit he identified his 14 year old son charlie, and his mother rebecca, as the two who were killed when a wrong-way driver hit them head on. the crash happened monday afternoon on highway 85. in the post, olson writes about charlie, saying he

was my world. charlie was born in the uk, but the family moved to san jose 12 years ago. we spoke with mayor matt mehan. >> i drive right through that area every morning and it really could have been anyone. tragically, a child whose entire life was in front of him. >> charlie had just started his ninth grade school year at summit tahoma last week. the school sent us this statement. charlie was an enthusiastic new high school student, forming friendships and eagerly engaging in his classes. we are heartbroken. and yet the light in our community continues to shine in olson's reddit post, he wrote that charlie was one of the most traveled teens. last year, charlie and his mom spent christmas in antarctica. he took immense pride in history and politics. he said. charlie was my travel buddy and the only person i ever truly felt at home with. mahan, a father himself, described the post as beautiful.

school. he was the one killed in a deadly pileup on highway 12 in santa rosa. the crash involved 11 vehicles and shut down westbound lanes by fulton road for almost four hours. the man killed 78 year old pat la fortune, was a former track coach and history teacher at cardinal newman. that's according to an alumni facebook page. several other people were taken to the hospital. the chp says a big dump truck did not stop in traffic in time and caused a chain reaction pileup. >> pretty bad collision. we just remind everyone to slow down and be aware of your surroundings, and always pay attention to the roadway. >> we're told the big rig driver is cooperating with the investigation. >> we move now to your voice, your vote, where we saw plenty of people gathering at manny's cafe in the mission district for what was a key moment in this re-energised race for the white house. cnn had the first sit down interview with democratic presidential candidate kamala harris and her running mate,

>> ama and dan. >> let me show you a live picture right now from our mount tam cam, where you will notice that the marine layer is hovering right over the city by the bay. >> richardson bay is certainly helped to drive temperatures down even more than yesterday, so the cooling continued for your saturday morning. clouds will give way to sun for most areas. sunday partly cloudy and breezy and labor day. go ahead, fire up the grill. it is going to be milder mid 60s to low 90s. if you're heading up to tahoe you really couldn't ask for better weather. there's going to be sun all four days tomorrow. in the 80s, continuing saturday and sunday, and then cooler for your monday. now, i do want to tell you that there are major changes in the forecast. i'll be back with the friday forecast, plus a look at that major change that's ahead coming up on gma. >> all right. we'll check back. thank you sandhya. san francisco police say car break-ins are down 57% this year. they credit the deployment of new drones and automated license plate readers. they say this technology is helping to catch organized theft

rings. this sfpd drone video from last week is one example they gave from a car break-in, along the embarcadero. the drone followed the suspects through the city. officers disabled the vehicle and say they arrested three armed suspects. the stolen luggage was returned. >> well, the state of fast food is shifting, especially in california. it seems like every day we report on a new opening or closing. most recently shake shack, closing its oakland location, forcing a number of people to wonder if it's the state's new fast food minimum wage law. turns out the store was underperforming, but it got us a bit curious about the effects of these higher wages. abc seven news reporter tara campbell set out to find out if the worker pay raise is actually paying off. >> now, nearly half a year into a minimum wage hike for fast food workers, the latest job numbers from the state are proving paying more may pay off. >> judging on the employment figures, we have so far, the minimum wage increase has been a

success story. >> california's fast food workers minimum wage increase went into effect in april, bumping up pay from $15.50 an hour to $20 an hour at most. chain locations. >> opponents to the law were predicting that it would result. it would have a huge negative impact on the fast food industry, and we heard some of those concerns last year when the governor signed the bill into law. >> some estimates suggest that we could have up to 50,000 jobs lost. >> but recent state and federal employment data shows california has added 11,000 new fast food jobs since upping the minimum wage. and according to the governor's office, there's been more job creation nearly each month compared to last year. but the experts warn those numbers may not tell the whole story. >> this is the tends to be the time of europe where most jobs are added. you know, the time from april may through the end of the summer, so it's not a unexpected that jobs would be added.

>> we are happy to hear from workers that they have been affected in a positive way. >> maria maldonado is the director of the california fast food workers union. we have uh- kids that they they want to give them a better life for the future so that they can thrive in this state. >> it's very expensive, but it is. there should be opportunities for everyone. >> meanwhile, critics of the pay hike say it's not just about job numbers, suggesting employers are cutting workers hours to help curb the impact of the higher wages. tara campbell abc seven news. >> state food and agriculture officials say they are investigating possible avian flu infections in three central valley dairy herds. officials say they are testing to confirm the presence of the h5n1 virus. according to the chronicle, these would be the first cases in california dairy cows. but health officials say there is no safety concern for consumers because pasteurization is fully effective at inactivating the virus in milk and dairy products. avian flu has been

matter. daniel and stephanie menard, both in their 70s, were reported missing sunday. investigators say they received tips of about a dispute with a neighbor, and today officers raided the house next door and an armored vehicle tore down part of it. no one was found inside, and neighbors now say they fear the worst. >> it's very concerning because this is just not normal for them at all that they're going to come back. my gut feeling is that they're not. >> officers did not explain why they used armored vehicles on the neighbor's home, saying only that they were not sure if the man they were looking for was inside. >> the future of artificial intelligence, at least in california, might lie in the hands of governor newsom. >> tonight, a bill made it out of the legislature that would set up numerous regulations for companies who spend more than $100 million to develop ai. state senator scott wiener of san francisco authored the bill. one of the requirements is companies would have to do a

anniversary earlier this week. the couple met as dancing partners on season 25 of dancing with the stars in 2017. >> the actor may be most known for his role as apollo creed in the rocky movies, was honored posthumously with a star on the hollywood walk of fame today. carl weathers passed away in february at 76 years of age. he played professional football for the oakland raiders in 1970 and 71, before embarking on his acting career. weathers earned a ba in drama from san francisco state university in 1974. he was also known for his roles in predator, happy gilmore, and in the mandalorian. current las vegas raiders owner mark davis sponsored weathers star, a scientific breakthrough discovered here locally could help build a better bay area and change how we recycle. >> researchers at uc berkeley discovered a chemical process that breaks down plastics like water bottles and milk jugs. chemists combine the plastics with two catalysts sodium and tungsten. they seal it inside a

high pressure reactor, add ethylene and heat it and stir. a researcher who discovered the process says it creates raw materials that can be recycled easier than traditional plastic. >> we hope that this method can kind of provide a better alternative to traditional mechanical recycling, where instead of a lower value product out of the recycling process, you can get the exact same plastic by just recreating it from scratch. >> the breakthrough was built on several years of research by cal students. it was published today in the journal science. a first for california is happening next month in san francisco, mayor london reid's office announced today the state's first entertainment zone event, oktoberfest on front, will be held on front street, makes sense between california and sacramento on september 20th. the entertainment zone program allows outdoor drinking and is intended to help revitalize downtown in the south bay. >> now the second annual lowrider day celebration is cruising into downtown san jose this weekend. lowriders and classic cars will be parked

outside city hall from noon to 6 p.m. on sunday. the event commemorates san jose's repeal in 2022 of the city's decades long ban on cruising. it's being held by the united lowrider council of san jose. that's a collective effort to serve the community and those in need, as well as continuing the lowrider culture. >> that'll be fun. so many people put such hard work into those cars. they're like beautiful art. they really are. so how's the weather going to be? >> meteorologist sandhya patel? >> yes, i was going to say it's going to be good cruising weather and no rain, right? no no, no. but top down drizzle. that's for sure. tops down. okay. in the middle of the evening as we take a look at a live picture right now uh- live views from our tower cameras, you can see that we certainly have the marine layer in the bottom two pictures. it's about 1600 feet deep, so we are on our way to another good night of sleeping weather. here's a look at live doppler seven and you

will notice the marine layer is pretty much well established along the coast. it's made its push across the bay. this area of low pressure is what's going to call the shots the next several days. so as it continues to get closer to the bay area, we'll start to notice its influence as we head towards the holiday weekend. let me show you what's going to happen. there's the low we go into saturday. it approaches the onshore winds, pick up the marine layer has a greater influence. there will be a little bit of mist at times. sunday is when those temperatures will bottom out, especially in our inland valleys. and then after that monday, high pressure starts to rebuild behind it. and that will set the stage for warmer weathe. pier 39 camera showing you overcast conditions overnight tonight. fog and spotty drizzle. labor day weekend cooling continues into sunday and then starting next tuesday. a big heat up is coming, so be prepared. in the meantime, enjoy the cooling influence of the marine layer is certainly dropped off temperature wise today. and the marine layer on live doppler seven right now. temperatures are in the 50s and

60s. we do have a nice delta breeze 25 miles an hour. fairfield, rio vista. that's going to keep that marine layer moving along tomorrow morning. it starts off gray and drizzly for most of you between 5 and 8 a.m, and then the clouds will actually break up. many of you will see sun for your friday, so i think as a result, temperatures may actually come up a few degrees temporarily for your friday before they fall again. numbers will be in the 50s 60s first thing tomorrow morning. watch out for that fog. a seasonal range of temperatures for your afternoon in the south bay. 84 san jose 90. in gilroy on the peninsula, you're looking at 82. in redwood city, 77, los altos, 65. in half moon bay, san francisco, 70 degrees. pretty nice day in the north bay. 86 in santa rosa, 84, san rafael into the 80s around napa, vallejo, east bay 75. oakland. about where you should be 80. castro valley head inland and it's going to be bright, sunny and warm, but not too hot. concord 90, along with livermore, 88 degrees in pleasanton. here's
