kosik in for rhiannon. and we begin with the presidential race and vice president kamala harris and running mate tim walz sitting down for the first in-depth interview. >> they opened up about their plans for the economy, the border and bipartisanship at the same time, former president trump held a town hall in wisconsin. trump also discussing several key issues, including energy costs and reproductive rights. overnight, vice president harris calling out critics who claim she's flip flopped on several key issues. >> i think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed. >> harris has changed her stance on multiple hot button topics, including the so-called green new deal, medicare for all, and building the border wall. harris, back in 2020, called the border wall a medieval vanity project. let me be very clear. >> i'm not going to vote for a wall under any circumstances. >> but at last week's convention, she promised to move ahead with a bill that would continue building sections of a wall. we saw a similar change in

her stance on fracking back in 2019. she vowed to ban the drilling method altogether, but when it came down to a vote, harris opted to extend oil company access to federal lands, harris cementing her new stance overnight as president. >> i will not ban fracking. >> harris, also outlining her plans for the economy, vowing to invest in affordable housing, provide tax credits for small businesses and reinstate the pandemic era child tax credit. >> what we're going to do to invest in families, for example, extending the child tax credit to $6,000 for families for the first year of their child's life to help them buy a car seat, to help them buy baby clothes, a crib. >> former president trump has promised to extend tax cuts, use tariffs to boost u.s. manufacturing. and speaking in michigan yesterday, he promised to lower energy costs. >> i will declare a national emergency to allow us to dramatically increase energy production generation and supply, which comrade kamala has destroyed. she's destroyed it. >> at a wisconsin town hall last night, trump also raised

questions about election integrity. >> we're up in states, but it's close. it's close. it's and you know, they cheat like hell. so we don't want to have it too close. but we have to because we have to get we have to win this. we're not going to have a country. >> it comes as the former president faces fallout over an incident at arlington national cemetery earlier this week, marking three years since the withdrawal from afghanistan. army officials say a cemetery worker was abruptly pushed asid, allegedly by trump campaign staffers, while trying to enforce a law that bans campaign events in that part of the cemetery. trump says he was invited by gold star families to take pictures, the campaign later posting this video online. >> but on that hallowed ground, should they have pulled out, i don't know what the rules and regulations are. >> i don't know who did it, but the army saying participants were made aware of federal laws and dod policies. >> with just 67 days until the election, both candidates appear to be courting moderates and undecided voters. trump,

speaking about reproductive health care, appeared to call out florida's six week abortion ban. >> well, i think the six week is too short. it has to be more time. >> trump also announcing that if elected, he'll call for universal coverage of certain fertility treatments under the trump administration. >> we are going to be paying for that treatment. so we're going to be paying for that treatment or we're going to be mandating that the insurance company pay. >> at the same time, harris, discussing bipartisanship, not ruling out, including a republican in her cabinet. >> i think it's important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences. and i think it would be to the benefit of the american public to have a member of my cabinet who was a republican. >> meanwhile, harris is facing some pressure from her own supporters. the new york times reports some of her top donors are pushing her to reconsider her proposed tax hike on the ultra wealthy. >> severe storms are impacting holiday travel. a doorbell camera captured this lightning strike in wisconsin. tornadoes were reported in neighboring

minnesota and on the east coast. storms in northern virginia last night included hail the size of golf balls and 70 mile per hour winds. more storms are expected today from saint louis to cleveland, moving into the northeast tomorrow. we will check your full forecast in just a moment. >> the weather this summer is raising concerns about mosquito borne viruses. we're now hearing from the father of a teenager left paralyzed by the west nile virus, now fighting for his life. abc's perry russom has the story. perry. good morning. >> andrew, good morning to you. at least three deaths from west nile have been reported in the upper midwest. as the wet and hotter than usual summer is raising the risk for mosquito borne diseases. this morning, more communities waging war on mosquitoes. health officials in wisconsin confirming two people have now died from west nile virus. illinois also reporting a death. nearly 300 cases have been reported across more than 30 states. in missouri, 18 year old john proctor, now on a ventilator after contracting the

virus. his parents say his symptoms began with a headache and dizziness, then vomiting, disorientation and a fever. >> my son was a healthy, athletic individual, very outgoing and charismatic, and to see him lethargic and struggle to do simple, basic functions, it's hard. >> officials are also warning about triple e, another rare but potentially lethal mosquito borne virus, what's believed to be the country's sixth known case has been reported in massachusetts. it is that serious and they have warnings and everything. >> so everyone is aware of it. in new hampshire, stephen perry's family says the 41 year old was in perfect health before contracting triple e. >> he was hospitalized with 105 degree fever and died a week later. severe cases and deaths from these diseases are rare. for west nile, the u.s. sees 100 to 200 deaths every year. experts are recommending using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and pants at dusk and dawn. alison. >> all right, perry, thanks for that. the bird flu may have now

spread to dairy cows in california. if the suspected cases are confirmed, it would be the 14th state to report a bird flu infection in cattle. health officials insist the pasteurization process deactivates the virus and there's no threat to the milk supply. >> an explosive new report finds the fbi continued to mishandle child sexual abuse cases years after promising reform. the 2016 arrests of usa gymnastics doctor larry nassar for the abuse of athletes prompted a review by the justice department's inspector general. he reviewed more than 300 cases and found nearly half of them the fbi failed to report allegations to local police. the lawyer, who represented gymnasts, including simone biles, calls this new report a gut punch. >> nobody has gone to jail for this. nobody has been held accountable except one agent was fired and the entire agency. when is somebody going to do something to stop this? >> the fbi is once again promising changes. >> a developing story overnight from california. a mystery on a

nudist ranch. the search for a missing couple intensifying with some dramatic scenes unfolding overnight, the search intensifying for a missing southern california couple last seen at their home on a nudist ranch. authorities swarming that community near san bernardino using this armored vehicle to tear open the home of their neighbor, who police say is a person of interest. entering that residence with guns drawn. we don't know where the subject is. >> he may still be inside, or he may be somewhere else on the grounds. >> 73 year old stephanie maynard and her 73 year old husband dan, along with their dog cuddles, were last seen saturday. their vehicle was found unlocked down the road from their home the following day. >> there's no way that stephanie or dan could have walked away from that car. she has a cane. it was at home. her purse, their

cell phones, things they would have never left, you know, at home. >> friends say the maynard's are part of a lawsuit against the ranch. and claim the couple was being harassed. police say they suspect foul play after getting a tip that one of the neighbors may be involved. >> we received a phone call with information that a subject who was involved in their disappearance was on site unseen. at that point, we locked down the property and began investigation and a search for the individual. >> police overnight said they believe that person of interest is still in the area. all right. >> time now for your friday forecast. >> good morning. we're going to see some storminess across much of the east and into the south as we step into the beginning of the holiday weekend. the northern plains more the midwest are looking good and we have some heat building into the northwest by labor day. our front pushes farther south. that opens the door for beautiful dry weather for more of the

labor day weekend. it's football friday. this morning on gma. >> investigators in arizona are looking into the mysterious death of a wells fargo bank employee. they say she clocked in at the branch in tempe on august 16th, but her body wasn't found until four days later in her cubicle on the third floor.

police speculate it took so long because many of the bank's employees work from home. they found no evidence of foul play so far. >> one of the stars of dancing with the stars has been arrested in california, and this morning few details are being released about the case. it's like he's known for his moves in the ballroom. but this morning, dancing with the stars pro artem chigvintsev is out on bail. the 42 year old, arrested yesterday on suspicion of felony domestic violence. handcuffed and booked by police in napa county, california. bail was set at $25,000. and i can't get enough. the russian born dancer has competed on 12 seasons of dancing with the stars, where he met his wife, former wwe wrestler nikki garcia. the couple were on air partners. >> i do feel a little intimidated being in this ring right now. the pair, married in 2022, share a four year old son and just this week commemorated their second anniversary. >> chigvintsev posting happy anniversary my love. can't see my life without you. you are my

for big smiles... ...little smiles... ...and good for the whole family smiles cheerios a hospital after three of their colleagues were shot by a suspect overnight. at least one of those officers did not survive. dallas police say the suspect was fatally shot by officers about 25 miles north of the city after a chase. >> lawyers for the man accused of killing four college students in moscow, idaho, are asking the judge to move the trial. they claim they conducted a survey of local residents, which they say showed a mob mentality, with one resident allegedly saying if bryan kohberger isn't convicted, he'll burn the courthouse down. but prosecutors insist they can find an impartial local jury. the parents of at least one victim want the trial to stay local. >> whole community has been victimized by this person, you

for the manifold suffering that you and your family and this community has endured, because you were wrong. >> i'm just excited that this day has finally come. i mean, it's one day for a wrongful conviction or an arrest. >> it's too long. >> spencer, now 59, was convicted at age 22. but over time, key witnesses recanted their story and a new investigation found prosecutors had withheld evidence despite his long ordeal. spencer yesterday asked his supporters to focus instead on the man killed on that day in 1987. >> and i'd ask that we don't forget that myself and my family, we're not the only victims in this, but the young family were victims as well, because they lost a loved one. and the person who was actually responsible for what happened to jeffrey young was not brought to justice. >> spencer can now apply for compensation from the state for his years in prison. in dallas
