hostage in gaza. meanwhile, u.s. secretary of defense lloyd austin is visiting israel to determine what military aid is needed to help in their war with hamas. as the war between israel and hamas militants rages on, the biden administration is working with regional partners on efforts to help prevent this conflict from spreading. >> what we've seen here is something most of us almost is unimaginable. >> reporter: secretary of state blinken arriving in jordan this morning. he was on the ground in israel thursday, getting a firsthand look at the aftermath of saturday's surprise attack, delivering a message of support to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and survivors. >> the outpouring has been incredible. it's very heartfelt. you can count on it. we'll be there. >> reporter: as the fighting continues, the biden administration says it's working to get americans out of harm's

first-year students, freshmen, at stanford university, and the university says what the lecturer did to try to illustrate a point doesn't amount to a creative lesson, it's not about academic freedom. they say it's about targeting students for what their personal identities are. i want to show you the stanford campus this morning. the lecturer is suspended pending results of an investigation. that person will not be in the classroom as stanford works through the specifics of what happened earlier this week. now, according to stanford university, the instructor asked jewish and israeli students to identify themselves and have them stand in the corner of the classroom, saying this is how palestinians are treated. according to students who spoke to the "chronicle," the lecturer told about 18 students this was a lesson in colonialism, blaming the war on people who want to
5:08 am
retain israel as a jewish homeland. now, stanford's statement reads in part, academic freedom does not permit the identity-based targeting of students. the instructor in this course will not currently teach while the university works to ascertain the facts of the situation. now, through this conflict, we have heard palestinians from that war zone saying, we, palestinians, are not hamas, we are not the same. while hamas considers itself a freedom-seeking organization, because of its violent and terrorist tendencies, the united states says it is a terrorist organization and does not represent the people of palestine. back to you. >> wow, that's a really visual image. thank you very much. our coverage of the war continues in all of our newscasts. for the latest updates 24/7, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com. you can also get alerts sent straight to your phone by downloading our free nbc bay area app. 5:08 now.

>> i think we're in an incredibly difficult funding environment, the investors are much more cautious and not flinging money around. >> you can find sand hill road on apple podcast, google play and others. sometimes it's about money, but it's also about the human being behind the money. this one is absolutely about the money. >> the economy has been changing, people are more conservative. >> if you have involved in high-tech and startups, you need to know the health of all the money flowing and it's not flowing like it used to. >> and not all of them are a hit. everybody has big dreams. >> that's right. >> that's interesting. we'll check it out. >> thanks a lot, scott. on to some more news, a u.s. war veteran who once faced serious challenges on the home front is now turning those one-time obstacles into an opportunity to help heal others. ricky andrews spent nearly a decade in the armed forces and served in both afghanistan and kurdistan and he says he faced

5:21 am
hanging out. san jose downtown, great shot there, look at that. we will have some high clouds start to roll through as the sun comes up. you'll notice some more. here is the reason why. let's get a better picture. we've got the cold front dropping in. as that begins to form in the pacific, it's going to start moving in, especially heading into later tonight. i'm going to take you through the timing in a second. first, let's get you through the daytime highs. high clouds, notice late p.m. shower chance. temperature-wise, we're starting to notice some cooling, notice morgan hill, 79 degrees, concord 76, napa 73, santa rosa also in the 70s, and san francisco in the upper 60s. when is that rain chance expected to make its arrival? let's take it through 9:00. i push the timeline forward and you'll notice through santa rosa, novato, that starts to kind of move in overnight into early saturday morning. so early saturday morning you'll definitely get that fall feel with the cloudiness, and then
5:22 am
the shower chances moving into san francisco as well. now, spreading this out through about 11:30, 12:00, you'll notice the majority of this is focused offshore and to the north. so if you live in the south bay, you're likely not going to see any rain, you're just going to get cloud cover, if that. by the afternoon, once that clears out, we're going to get a pretty nice day ahead. not a big rainmaker, less than a quarter of an inch. a lot of the focus further up north. over the next seven days here is what you can expect. we're going to keep the upper 60s through san francisco through sunday. by next wednesday and thursday, the return of the upper 80s, nearing the 90s, mike. how are those roads doing? >> i'm sad that this is blocking one lane. over here, you'll notice from time to time you can see a car perpendicular to traffic. there was a crash or at least a spin, minor injuries, and a couple of vehicles remain.
5:23 am
this is a spectacle. by the coliseum, we're jammed up with traffic by high street and clearing by the time you pass by hegenberger. traffic flows smoothly, but the build is on. back to you. >> thank you, mike. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> she feels a business fumbled and short-changed her to the tune of 3 grand. he feels the company punted and he feels the company punted and owes him more than a thousand

"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live in the east bay. bob, do we know of any credible threats of violence at this point? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and ginger. fortunately, no, we have no reports of threats against the congregation behind me in pleasanton or any other

congregation locations, synagogues throughout the bay area. this was the scene last night in los gatos. this was at the addison-penzak jewish community center, where the congregation came together to pray for peace after this call for a day of anger. law enforcement here in the bay area is aware of and on alert for this potential threat, while in new york city all officers have been ordered to show up to work today just in case. we want to be clear, however, these calls for a day of anger have historically yielded large demonstrations in the middle east, but no large-scale attacks in the united states. >> they felt like it wasn't enough, what they have done, and they keep on pushing any potential human boundary that you can think, and at the same time i am super proud that our community gathers today, that we didn't suspend it. they're not going to win or beat us. >> our police department is doing a tremendous job of
