>> she is excited. i'm excited for her. especially her and not me. i will take the girls up to bed. i'm impressed by the marathon runners. we will have the forecast in a bit. we want to get to today's headline. we are keeping a close eye on the middle east amid what appears to be new tensions between the u.s. and israel over what is next in the war as the civilian casualties in gaza mount. after meeting with the secretary of state antony blinken on friday, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says israel will not consider pauses in gaza until the hostages are freed. his comments coming after the plea from blinken. and on friday, a strike on the ambulance in gaza and hamas said it was used to kill 15 people. hamas says that wasn't true. let's get the latest on it all from nbc's josh lederman who is

near the israeli-gaza border. josh, what can you tell us this morning? >> reporter: good morning, laura. israel is facing questions over the efforts to protect civilians after the strike it acknowledged it involved an ambulance in the gaza strip. the health ministry run by hamas say the strike hit a convoy of ambulances leaving the gaza's largest hospital killing the 15 people. the israeli military says it was used by hamas and they say they will release more information to back up their claim that hamas has been transporting weapons, but terrorists inside of ambulances. hamas saying that is a baseless claim. it comes as the white house is really putting more pressure on israel over the military strategy. the u.s. and israel in open disagreement over president biden's calls for pauses in israeli strikes to try to get those hostages out. we have also heard from israel that they are not considering that pause and they want to see

from the united states with netanyahu emerging from the meeting with secretary blinken to say it's not going to happen. the u.s. is publicly opposing the israeli move to hold gaza funds from the palestinian authority meant for municipal salaries and electricity. u.s. is helping to try to find the hostages which include american citizens. the pentagon saying it is flying unarmed surveillance drones over the gaza strip. secretary blinken is in jordan to meet with officials from other arab allies all calling for a cease-fire. laura. >> i want to ask about hezbollah militant group. they did not go as far as some might expected. >> reporter: that's right. he is putting distance between his group, hezbollah, and the hamas terror attacks on october

7th. saying they were 100% palestinian operation. you point out he stopped short of announcing any type of escalation in hezbollah attacks on israel. he certainly did not rule that out in the future. he is also issuing a threat to the u.s. saying american troops will pay the price if this war widens into a regional conflict. laura. >> josh lederman, thank you. >> we want to bring in jeremy bash, served as chief of staff at the defense department and cia. he is with us this morning. jeremy, thank you for being here this morning. i want to get to the signs of tension with the united states and israel. you have antony blinken calling for humanitarian pauses and president biden has said as much in the last several days. benjamin netanyahu appearing to rebuff that saying no pauses without all of the hostages being rele you take us inside w these conversations would look like and what different pressures both sides are facing?

>> peter, they do not support a total cease-fire. they are aligned with israel that a cease-fire would basically be a unilateral disarmament and the last cease-fire was used to rearm and plan the worst terror attack and slaughter of jews since the holocaust. they are discussing discreet local pauses in some of israel's aerial campaign to allow for massive amounts of humanitarian aid to come into specific areas. the pauses could last half a day or a day. israel would restart the military campaign to go after hamas and the key here is if hostages are not released, israel is not willing to support these breaks in the military conduct. >> jeremy, i know i heard you say israel is making progress on the ground there in gaza. i wonder at what cost. we talked about the ambulance being hit because they say it

was connected to hamas. that will keep happening? >> i would say ground operations are more precise. the more israel goes into gaza city and surround gaza city and providing forces on the ground, they can be very specific. they can be intelligence driven and go to specific locations and weapons caches. if israel is only allowed to conduct air strikes from the air, they will have to flatten buildings and that is tougher on the humanitarian situation. those people who want israel to be precise, the united states is included in that group, they want israel on the ground. >> jeremy, i want to ask what we heard from the leader of the militant group hezbollah in lebanon. they have greater military powers than hamas does. he did not call for an all-out war, but it could be an option. there could be further attacks in the future. how concerned should we be at this moment about the potential for a wider war in that region?

>> very concerned because iran could turn on hezbollah at any moment. i think what the speech from nezrallah showed yesterday is they are capably deterring iran. he is sending a clear message don't get involved in the war. it could change at any moment. >> jeremy bash, we appreciate your time. thank you very much. back here in the u.s. this weekend, mourners in lewiston, maine will honor some of the 18 victims of the worst mass shooting this year. on friday, the president and first lady traveled to meet with the families of the victims. george solis was also there. george, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the president and first lady arriving in lewiston. the first stop was to the bar & grille. they arrived to the bowling

alley to pay respects to the seven victims who lost their lives there and thanking the nurses and first responders. the president cited his experience with grief at one point recalling past mass shootings to take on the role of consoler in chief. the president taking note of the survivors of the mass shooting and challenges these individuals now face. >> children, grandchildren, spouses, siblings, parents, grandparents, bowling coaches, union workers, beloved members and advocates and friends and the deaf and hard of hearing community in lewiston, all of them lived lives of love and service and sacrifice. >> reporter: after their comments here, the president and first lady went to a local elementary school where they met privately with family members of the victims here. the investigation, meanwhile, of

the shooting is ongoing. court documents released by maine state police revealed the shooter may have had other targets in mind. according to the medical examiner, he was alive and on the run for 8-to-12 hours before being found dead of the self inflicted gunshot wound. memorials in the town of lewiston continue to grow. peter and laura. >> george, thank you for being there for us. a former state department employee appointed by former president trump is headed to prison for the role in the january 6 riot. sentenced to six years on friday. prosecutors say klein forced open doors on the capitol and assaulted police officers there. steve caputo was sentenced in

the riot. more than 1,000 people have been arrested in the attack on the capitol. and former president trump is facing lawsuits in two states aimed at keeping the frontrunner off the ballot all together. those are now heating up. aaron gilchrist has more on that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. some are questioning if the 14th amendment prohibits president trump from running for office. no person may hold office after having sworn an oath to defend the constitution. a judge heard arguments this week and testimony after six residents, republicans and independents, filed a lawsuit saying president trump was

disqualified because he violated that clause in the constitution. some argued in the minnesota supreme court on thursday. the plaintiffs argued that mr. trump incited violence on january 6th and is guilty of insurrection and cannot be on the ballot. they argue that trump is not guilty and the state and officials have no authority to disqualify a presidential candidate. these cases both raise questions surrounding the former president's role in the capitol riot and eligibility. the judge in the case has to make a decision by november 17th. that decision could come in the next several days or weeks. laura. >> thank you, aaron. and now to the new york civil trial on the trump organization. the judge on friday expanded the gag order to stop trump's

lawyers from attacking the law clerk. the former president has been fined twice for doing so. eric trump was back on the stand on friday and pressed about what he knew about the trump organization testifying about the financial statements and well being of the trump organization. that is making a lot of headlines, but, laura, you are the lawyer. we have ivanka trump next week, but will we see the former president testify? >> it is interesting. getting on stand and raising his hand. this is his namesake company. he stands to lose control of the business if the new york attorney general gets her way. why is he going to get on the what is the state calling him? the state wants the judge to make a credibility determination. when he says i don't know anything, the judge decides if that is credible. this is the same judge that he has managed to anger by going after the law clerk and the

judge feels -- >> this is civil, not criminal. he can't say i'll pass. >> he can. if he does, the judge can make a negative inference. he will say if you didn't answer, there is a reason why. >> we will watch that over the next several days. if you are flying this weekend or any time soon, keep a close eye on the electronic devices. you heard them say that so many times as you get ready to board a plane. nbc's tom costello has more on a passenger's backpack exploded and caught fire because of the lithium ion battery inside. >> reporter: it happened as the jetblue flight was boarding. flight attendants poured water on the backpack after the charger caught fire. >> explosion came and my backpack came toward my face. >> reporter: jetblue says the crew responded immediately and addressed the situation.

it comes as the faa reports stunning data. so far this year, 60 on-board battery incidents through october. more than one a week. in march, a spirit airlines flight made an emergency landing after a device caught fire. it sent ten passengers to area hospitals. >> the fire is out. >> reporter: in february, in san diego, a battery pack caught fire. lithium batteries overheat going into thermal run away. it is why the faa doesn't allow batteries in checked luggage. >> if a fire breaks out in the cargo hold, it is something you can't see because it is beneath the floor. that could have catastrophic consequences. >> reporter: batteries are in everything. hundreds on every plane. and leading to home fires with serious injuries.

speaker emeritus nancy pelosi. the northern california coalition for just immigration reform is protesting after president biden says he cannot stop funding for construction of the wall at the u.s./mexico border. they are calming on congresswoman pelosi to publicly denounce the move. president biden said earlier in the month he tried to redirect the funds, but the department of homeland security is legally required to use that money for the project. that demonstration is set to get under way at 7:30 this morning. well a major highway in the east bay is closed all weekend long. caltrans shut down all southbound lanes of 680 last night from the 580 interchange in dublin. all the way d to highway 84 in sunol for roadwork there. you can see the closure on this map. all highlighted in red. a big stretch. it's the weekend. plan around it. all lanes are expected to reopen by 4:00 monday morning, just in time for the commute. at 5:28, get you a quick

bring home the first world series trophy. the kids got to celebrate, too, six school districts closed to have the kids celebrate. a serious story this morning. testimony in the high profile murder trial. the man at the center of the apparent deadly love triangle the took the stand on friday with his girlfriend accused of killing a former love interest. dana griffin has the latest for us. dana, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. prosecutors say former yoga instructor kaitlin armstrong killed pro cyclist mo wilson over the jealous rage with a relationship with her boyfriend through a fitness app. the former boyfriend testified about the day of the murder in court. day three of the kaitlin armstrong trial focused on the star witness colin strickland.

the boyfriend at the center of the love triangle turned deadly. >> two gunshots. >> reporter: armstrong accused of the may, 2022 killing of moriah wilson, who previously dated strickland while the couple was on a break. strickland testified he and wilson went swimming and got food and dropping her off at home where she was staying with a friend. wilson was found gunned down in the bathroom. >> you can hear screams followed by two gunshots and a pause and another gunshot and earlier in the video, you saw a black suv driving through which prosecutors repeatedly said was armstrong's jeep. >> reporter: armstrong fled the country and was tracked down in costa rica. she was seen looking different

and she said the change was from a surfing accident. the 35-year-old yoga teacher pleaded not guilty. her defense team arguing there was no proof she committed the crime. the trial comes two weeks after armstrong injured an officer trying to escape custody during a doctor's appointment. armstrong faces a second degree feony charge. a judge ruled monday that the prosecutor could include the escape attempt as part of the case against her. the trial is expected to last through mid-november. if convicted, armstrong faces up to 99 years in prison. >> nbc news has reached out to the defense team for comment on the escape charge. we are waiting to hear back. meantime, strickland testified he believes the defendant was monitoring his private text conversations with other women because she had access to his passwords and social media accounts. on one occasion, the defendant

again. a third family tricked by several women who stole their family's safe. it happened at a tailor shop back in august. now, the video shows a woman lure the owner into a fitting room. that's when more people walk in and they sneak into the back. the family says the group stole their safe filled with $100,000 worth of valuables. >> they were robbed of their whole retirement, retirement savings. family heirlooms, jewelry, that won't be covered by insurance. we're just heartbroken and sad to see, like what the bay area has come to. it's not the bay area that we remember. >> the incident is similar to two other burglaries that happened this week. police are working to link the three cases together. a woman rushed to the hospital in oakland and an investigation is under way after a mysterious fire near the coliseum. when firefighters got to the
