you can see just the top of the golden gate bridge on our last morning of daylight-saving time. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. what are those clouds telling us? >> yeah. definitely some thick fog developed over the golden gate bridge and through the north bay national weather service issues that dense fog advisory. going to be worse through those interior valleys in the north bay until 10:00 this morning when it starts to mix out. be careful with changes in visibility out there in the roadway. what is happens on satellite and radar? a beautiful example of this comma shape, cinnamon roll shape dropping rain mainly in the california oregon area but moving into the bay. clouds rolling in today. mostly spotty sprinkles moving in through tonight lasting through monday. changes in the forecast. all that coming up in about 15 minutes. kira, back to you.

>> cinthia, thanks. we begin with breaking news this morning out of san francisco where a driver tried to speed away from police on the bay bridge and ended up causing multiple car crashes with several people injured. we have video of the aftermath. this son the i-80 on the san francisco side of the bay bridge. chp tells nbc bay area around 10:30 last night it attempted to pull over a silver lincoln driving west into the city. the driver sped away, exitsed at ninth street. the pursuit continued about four blocks when the driver hit a blue audi and that self-driving waymo car with passengers inside. at 11th and folsom you see the car went on the sidewalk, hit to pedestrians. a passenger in the blue audi didn't want to be on camera hurt her head and shaken by the entire incident. >> concerned he would probably have a gun. i think he had -- and my friend

sitting by me, hurt his neck. >> we have not received information a gun was involved. the two pedestrians hit were transported to the hospital with major and minor injuries. the suspect taken to the hospital. no word on what charges he will face. also in san francisco, firefighters are working to contain a gas leak after a samtrans bus trashed into a building. it happened just before 1:30 this morning on third and marin streets in the dog patch neighborhood. that caused a gas line to rupture. firefighters and police have closed off third street from cesar chavez to marin. san francisco police are investigating what caused that crash. no word on the condition of that samtrans driver. another bay area police officer has been abruptly dismissed over racist text messages. first in antioch, now in san jose. as "today in the bay's" thom

jensen tells you the police chief took swift action. >> reporter: this involved a series of inappropriate texts from a six-year veteran and internal affairs investigators uncovered during an unrelated rim nall investigation. a number with the n word in them and one said "i hate black people." the chief says zero tolerance. >> these messages contained statements and words that are racially biased. they're ugly. disgusting. something we don't tolerate here. >> reporter: the chief recently added staff to the internal affairs investigation and one of these investigations the text was discovered. he was immediately released. mark mcnamara involved in shooting of a black man last year who just disarm add gunman

in san jose trying to leave when officers opened fire. social media tonight san jose's mayor said he'll sleep better knowing this former officer no longer carry as badge or has a gun. >> i was disturbed and frankly furious. i mean, there's no room for racism in our police department. this undermines public trust. the actions of this individual make our city less sage. >> reporter: in a written statement the president of the san jose police officers' association wrote. this behave sir beyond unacceptable and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms. this incident represents the actions of an individual. it is not a reflection of those who serve with honor and who treat every member of our community with the respect and dignity they deserve. the president steve slack went to do say those who perpetrate racial bias have no business in law enforcement. earlier this year federal

investigations into racism and antioch and pittsburg police departments led to raids and criminal indictments and fbi arrests of nine officers. in this case the chief said criminal charges have not been filed, and are not anticipated. meanwhile, another officer who received those texts has been placed on administrative leave pending another internal investigation into concerning dialogue, but that is all that sjpd is saying about that investigation right now. thom jensen, "today in the bay." we are going to turn now to a disturbing story out of the north bay where a manhunt is under way for a man suspected of decapitating his female relative and taking her head with him. we have a look at man police are looking for. this is 24-year-old luis gustavo lopez. a tattoo on side of his head along with a marijuana leaf. a family member from mexico is speaking to us exclusively confirming that the victim a his

grandmother. police tell us it all happened thursday afternoon at this home in santa rosa on poemo trail. they say he left that home with her head and has been on the run ever since. that victim's sister confirming with us that her sister was 64-year-old soledad arroyo castanetta and raised him but things took a turn when he began using crystal meth pap few years ago the grandmother reported him to police for stealing money and a passport from another relative. she a recent pa rollee convicted of assault. at this time santa rosa police believe it may be cartel-related. now that victim's sister is making a specific request to honor her sister's memory. >> translator: i asked him to bring us back my sister's head. please, leave it at our house or wherever he wants, but, please,

bring it back. >> santa rosa police are offering a $2,500 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest. he is 5'6" tall about 150 pounds and is considered armed and dangerous. he has family in the central valley and may have gone that way. if you see him, call 911. a big turn to the latest overseas where we are seeing new grim numbers as the death roll rises in the middle east. in israel the death toll is around 1,400 lives lost. in gaza we're told nearly 9,500 people have died. this as hundreds more civilians have been allowed to cross into egypt from gaza at the rafah crossing. families left through the rafah border crossing. the white house says more will be evacuated in the coming days. the border crossing served as an important gateway for civilians

to escape since being open to the public on wednesday. this as u.s. secretary of state antony blinken is in jordan today to meet with the head of the u.n. relief and works agency to discuss efforts in gaza. meanwhile, a major protest at the port of oakland yesterday. it was over a u.s. military ship believed to be headed to israel loaded with military equipment. that boat is now on its way to washington state. the pro-palestinian group showed up yesterday morning and saying they want a cease-fire. >> we don't just want a cease-fire. of course, we want to end the carnage immediately, but we need a solution, a political solution. >> oakland police and the coast guard were there and say they didn't make any arrests. we reached out to the department of defense about the contents of that ship. it would not confirm what was onboard. a live look in san francisco this morning where in just a few hours there when be a push to

support palestinians amid the war in the middle east. organizers say today's protest will be outside of the san francisco civic center. it's part of an international day of solidarity with palestine. they are also pushing for the u.s. to stop sending aid to israel. protesters also are planning to gather around more than 100 cities across the globe. in san francisco, the democraten -- demonstration begins at 1:00 and civic center. only on nbc bay area an antioch teacher on administrative leave because of this -- her halloween costume. it happened on tuesday, halloween, when center elementary school held its annual halloween parade. that teacher wore a scooby-doo mystery machine and painted her face dark to represent the night. you can see a moon over her head. many parents were at the party and at least one complained about the teacher's costume. >> we know that there's a long

advocates plan to gather outside of the san francisco home of speaker emeritus nancy pelosi. the northern california coalition for just immigration reform is protesting after president biden says he cannot stop funding for construction of the wall at the u.s./mexico border. they are calling on congresswoman pelosi to publicly denounce that move. biden said earlier this month he tried to redirect the funds, but the department of homeland

security is legally required to use the money for the project. that demonstration is set to get under way at 7:30 this morning. only on nbc bay area, the san jose distraction burglars strike again. a third family saying they were tricked by several women who stole their family's safe. it happened at a tailor shop back in august. video show as woman luring the owner in to a fitting room. that's when more people walk in and sneak in the back. the family says the group stole this safe filled with $100,000 worth of valuables. the incident is similar to two other burglaries that happens this week. police are working to link the three cases together. get ready for road closures and detours. a live look at the bay bridge as we prepare for the apec conference. shutting down san francisco streets and several major bridges for security purposes.

the bay bridge lane closures start this coming wednesday november 15th. the far left lane of eastbound i-80 and the far right lane of westbound i-80 will be shut down on the bay bridge. the closures will run from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. through that friday, rather, it's the week after this coming week. then on the golden gate bridge, the dana powers vista ramp shut down. no pedestrian access from marin county. that closure starts tuesday, november 14th, and continues through saturday. drivers should also expect on ramp closures in san francisco near the moscone center. looking for something to do this weekend, mikey inouye has a few ideas in this weekend's "calendar." >> start our day in san francisco's coppola gardens named for the filipino spiritual belief of interconnectedness. an after-life celebration, music, communities, sharing stories horning those who past

and of course cover all every weekday morning right here on "today in the bay." >> thanks. and checking in with cinthia pimentel with a look at the microclimate forecast. >> first weekend of november. gosh. time is flying by. get you outside. people want to do things on the weekend. today temperatures slightly cooler than yesterday. the times are changing. do upper 60s in san francisco. some low to mid-70s as you make your way around the bay area through the east bay shoreline and down into the south bay. only a few spots we'll seal temperatures low 80s to morgan hill and san march san martine. >> and in the california-oregon border. will that rain shift south?

it might. not a lot of rain compared to what they see in oregon and washington. throughout the day we're going to see clouds moving around the bay area. a chance of some light rain developing over the marin county coastline up into sonoma county this afternoon. most of that activity will happen as we go on to bed tonight and into tomorrow morning. more of that moisture comes in. if you don't see the rain you'll be blanketed in cloud cover giving it more of that fall feeling to our first weekend in november here. give the timeline a little more advance going into sunday evening. that rain starts to shift on south to the main core of the bay area. down into the south bay, but we're not going to squeeze out a lot of rain in the south bay until we get on possibly into monday and tuesday. this rain, this model, dumping a lot more moisture possibly snow even in the sierras. interesting to see the pattern play out. those shades of blue less than a quarter inch of rain, but watch as we advance it on into monday. more of that shading comes in. more of those rain chances picking up for just about

built two microcosm homes side-by-side. their go. burn them. well, one of them. the well-prepared home on the right is doing things right. defensible space, sealed eaves and no plants next to the walls. >> everything within the first five feet is non-combustible. >> reporter: the house on the left, however, is left to burn. intentionally, it has traditional easily butable siding, common mulch touching the seiden. old school wooden fence. shrubs up against the wall and open eaves. >> anything burning underneath, all the heat goes up into the structural pieces. >> reporter: like the roof. >> we can stop the fingers -- >> reporter: after a short introduction. >> set up with torches. >> reporter: firefighters simultaneously light tiny flames at both houses.

within about 12 minutes a smoking, roaring and unmistakable difference. the fire on the left burnaled so hot, so fast, it temporarily overheated our cameras. even though we were several yards away. the house collapsed while our cameras were cooling. luckily one of the hosts shared this clip with us. engineers knew exactly how this would go down. literally. they knew the house on the right would survive, because they've done this demo in a lab and written research papers. now they're taking this dramatic display on the road for you. >> one thing to read about the best practice. it's another to see it. we wanted to bring it to california residents let them see for themselves. >> reporter: this is california's fire marshal. >> myself two fires in the last three years. >> reporter: one thing about this controlled burn surprised us. that shrub right there. >> we think green. alive. we're watering them. so they should be able to rezeist fire. that's not the case.

>> reporter: the green shrub ignited, burned up the fence then burned down the house. he says you should learn from this live fire exercise. move all vegetation at least five feet from your home. even if heirloom plants have been rooted close by for years or decades. >> we realize that's not easy but the science shows us that that first five feet is critical. >> reporter: before the fire anne, the engineer, called it ginking us a tour of the two homes. >> even though this plant is beautiful, healthy and green, it will absolutely ignite. >> reporter: in fact, all of the lush plants burned. >> the science is right. >> reporter: karen collins is with the american property casualty insurance association which represents insurance companies that insure our homes. some companies are leaving california. others are dropping customers or raising premiums. they blame big losses and seemingly nonstop fires. collins says if homeowners collectively embrace the lessons

learned here and reduce risk more companies might resume offering home policies in california. >> we can be more resilient to wildfires and together individual homes at community scale, we can greatly reduce losses really positively impact the insurance market in california. >> reporter: at the end of the day, the wildfire prepared home on the right was so unscathed, firefighters can re-use it. fire marshal telling us california requires contractors to build and landscape new homes like this one. he says you should do the same with your home. no matter how old it s. not advising people do. it make as difference whether this home or your home is destroyed when a wildfire occurs. occurs. >> reporter: in

police and ended up causing multiple car crashes with several injured. 10:30 last night the chp attempted to pull over that silver lincoln you see crashed. the driver sped away exiting the bridge driving about four blocks into the city. this is at 11th and folsom the driver hit a blue audi and that self-driving waymo car you see there with passengers inside. the suspect's car went on the to the sidewalk hitting two pedestrians. the passenger in that blue out high didn't want to be on camera tells us she hurt her head and was shaken by the entire incident. >> getting out of the cars because concern he will probably have a gun. i hit my head by the window and also my friend sitting by me, he hit his neck. >> we haven't received confirmation any gun was involved. the two pedestrians who were hit were transported to the hospital. one with major injuries.

the suspect also taken to the hospital. no word on what charges he'll face. a san jose police officer has been abruptly dismissed. the chief telling nbc bay area an internal investigation revealed that officer had been sent r sending inappropriate text messages. officer mark mcnamara was let go from the sjpd for "demonstrated racial bias." mcnamara is a six-year veteran police officer but now is no longer serving with san jose. the police department provided to us ten pages of redacted texts with extremely inappropriate racial slurs. mcnamara was involved in a police shooting of a black man last year. that man had just disarm add gunman at a san jose talk rhea and trying to leave when officers opened fire on him. on social media last night san jose's mayor said he'll sleep

"today in the bay"s pete suratos reports. >> translator: my sister was always happy. she didn't deserve to die this way. >> reporter: hearing from the sister of the victim connected to a gruesome crime out of santa rosa. police say 24-year-old luis lopez is accused of decapitating a family member inside of her santa rosa so many this week and leaving the house with her head. the victim's sister confirming that her sister 64-year-old soledad castaneda is the suspect's grandmother, raised him during his childhood years but things went south after he began to use crystal meth with the victim reporting him to police a few years back for stealing money and a passport from a relative. police were called out to the santa rosa home believing she

may have been killed days before. >> we believe the homicide happened the last couple of days, we need an exact time of death from a coroner's office tying down when things occurred. >> reporter: residents shocked by the news including this woman, confirms what she heard yesterday from a woman who went to check on her friend who never showed up for church. >> saying that -- [ speaking in a global language ] kind of mimicking -- that. i was just like -- oh -- that's -- crazy. >> reporter: lopez was recently released from prison for assault with a deadly weapon and at this time santa rosa police strongly believe the incident may be cartel related. it's unclear where he's heading next, but police point out he has a distinct tattoo on the left side of his head, a 420 and a marijuana leaf. now the victim's sister is making a specific request to honor her sister's memory. >> translator: i asked him to bring us back my sister's head.

morning for "today in the bay" at 7:00. a major highway in the east bay closed all weekend. caltrans shut down all of southbound lanes of 680 last night from the 580 interchange in dublin all wait down to highway 84 in sunol. you can see the closure on this map in red. quite large. all lanes expected to reopen by 4:00 monday morning in time for the morning commute. coming up, we will have mikey inouye talking about detours to help you navigate the traffic. actually, let's turn to him right now! for help navigating that closure. hey, mike. >> reporter: folks, yes. since this closure slated through start of the monday morning commute avoid this section of 680 all weekend and delays all weekend. easiest options you see here. highway 84 through pleasanton into sunol or a much longer drive. 580 dublin and castro valley hayward union city south on the

nimitz. if you map it, clever taking this route here. parallel to 608 called foothill road continuing to pleasanton and sunol road not nearly same capacity of the multi-lane freeways. allow lots of extra time and tracking progress and hoping for early progression as seen in other projects. we'll let you know. >> mike, thanks. california regulators kicked off a series of meetings yesterday around a new law meant to protect consumers from being price gouged at the gas pump. the law was actually passed back in march. it gives the california energy commission the power to consider punishing oil refiners when they make too much money off the california drivers. the law created a new watchdog group within the commission to gather private business information and data from refiners to consider whether to set a cap on oil refiner profits. the workshops are designed to figure out how exactly the law

good saturday morning. 43 past the hour. i want to make sure you're aware the chp issue add fog advisory over the golden gate bridge. so after you make your way through the robin williams tunnel be careful with a change of visibility there. give yourself a little more space. watching this as it mixes out throughout the day and you have your city plans for this start in san francisco. around the bay lots going on. san jose water lantern festival this afternoon both today and tomorrow at the park. looks like a neat event. start those temperatures in the low 70s. more cloud cover rushing in tonight. make sure you bring a jacket, because those temperatures will drop pretty quickly today. what can we expect for the rest of the bay area today? the day we stay mostly dry. some clouds rolling around. best bet to get out there before things take a little wet turn for tomorrow. do upper 60s near the coast and low 70s for the east bay shoreline. upper 70s for inland valleys and a few spots will be clocking in in low 80s. watch what happens tomorrow. temperatures drop getting more rain chance and further dropping

into monday. no more of those low 80s. we are down into the 60s. widespread around the bay area. where is that rain right now? it's taking that counterclockwise spin through the pacific northwest. right now dumping a lot of rain, flood concerns, to the pacific northwest. for us just sprinkles around the california-oregon border. could intensify and could get closer to the bay. let's walk you through that time stamp up there, if you want to follow with me. rain near the shoreline that could pick up in marin county this afternoon. most of that rain it will be light. we'll pick up overnight through the north bay sweeping through for our sunday plans. sunday morning, sunday afternoon starts to, drop down into the core of the bay area. but monday, really, the best bet for moisture to come in and that model hinting at some rain. snow showers through the sierra. extend the weekend, be careful watch out for roads there. long range seeing rain chances move on through the bay, but

we were given exclusive access in to the prisonyard yesterday for the first-ever basketball game of correctional officers versus prisoners. the game was titled bridge the gap. the goal, promote positive interactions between the residents and the staff. in the end the incarcerated team won 82-50, but both sides tell us the game meant much more than just the score. it's part of a larger change coming to san quentin. the maximum security prison transformed into more of a rehab facility by 2025. now to the nba. the in-season tournament got started yesterday with all 30 teams and the warriors took on the oklahoma city thunder in occ. it was nip and tuck throughout, but this is the moment many are talking about. deep into the fourth quarter the game tied at 139 when steph curry drives to the hole lays ball of you the glass and into

francisco. chp tells us around 10:30 last night attempted to pull over that silver lincoln driving in to the city on the bridge. the pursuit took them off the bridge where the driver hit a blue audi and a self-driving waymo car with passengers inside. then that suspect's car went on to the sidewalk and hit two pedestrians. a passenger in that blue audi tells us she hurt her head and was scared something worse might happen. >> get out of the cars and, because we were concerned he will probably have a gun. i hit my head by the window, and also my friend, sitting by me, he hurt his neck. >> we have not received confirmation any gun was involved but the two pedestrians hit were taken to the hospital. the suspect also was taken to the hospital. no word on what charges he will face. and right now immigration advocates are gathering outside of the san francisco home of
