>> a lot of news to get to. we'll start with new developments tied to the israel-hamas war here and overseas, including the death of a jewish man at dueling protests in california. >> today marks one month sinces attack on israel, and the numbers are staggering. according to the israeli military, 240 people still being held hostage by hamas. >> gaza's health ministry which is run by hamas, is claiming more than 10,000 palestinians have been killed in israel's attacks, and 1,200 u.s. troops have been deployed to the region in a show of support for israel. >> we'll get to the latest on the front lines with more. but first, stephanie gosk has more on the fatal protest at home. >> good morning. this incident took place in thousand oaks, a suburb of l.a. the county sheriffs office there telling nbc news no arrest has been made in the death of that man. they're investigating the possibility this is a hate crime. as the war between israel and

hamas intensifies, and rallies on both sides spread here in the u.s., overnight a vigil for a 69-year-old jewish man in southern california who died after a fight during dueling pro-israel and pro-palestinian protests on sunday. >> he loves israel. he's proud of being a jew. and he went just to wave his flag. >> paul kessler died after an altercation with a pro-palestinian protester. the death has been ruled as a homicide according to police. and investigators are not ruling out the possibility of a hate crime. authorities in ventura county say kessler suffered a blunt force head injury when he fell backwards and struck his head on the ground. one local jewish group and early reports suggested kessler had been struck by a mega phone. but the sheriff's office saying we don't have any demonstrative evidence that occurred. there is a possibility that may have occurred. kessler was rushed to a hospital where he died the following day. responding to the incident, the /* the l.a. council on american-islamic relations say

they are deeply saddened by this tragic and shocking loss adding we join local jewish leaders in calling on all individuals to refrain from jumping to conclusions. dueling protests have been popping up nationwide since hamas attacked israel a month ago, mostly without serious incident. police often keep protesters separate. in new york city monday, hundreds of activists from jewish voices for peace staged a sit-in at the statue of liberty demanding an immediate cease fire and end to the war. while near central park, thousands of pro-israel supporters showing their solidarity with israel and support for each other. >> so nice to feel part of a community and all the support. >> back in california, authorities are hopeful that someone at the event has video evidence of the altercation and is willing to share it with investigators. a news conference is going to be held later today, and we should get more details, guys. >> stephanie, thank you. breaking overnight, secretary of state antony blinken arrived in japan.

for a summit that's expected to focus heavily on the israel-hamas war, and it comes exactly one month after the terror attacks that sparked it. israel forces are deepening their military campaign inside gaza. richard engel joins us with the latest headlines from the region. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. one month after that attack, israel's prime minister is suggesting that israel forces may have to at least temporarily occupy the gaza strip, but occupation carries huge risks. the israeli military says its troops will comb through every inch of gaza. they've surrounded gaza city, and israel's prime minister says israel may occupy gaza for a period until a replacement for hamas can be found. he spoke to abc news. >> i think israel will, for an indefinite period, will have the

overall security responsibility because we've seen what happens when we don't have it. >> reporter: president biden has said an occupation would be a mistake, taking over gaza, defeating hamas and finding local palestinians to work with could take years. and as u.s. troops learned in iraq could easily fail and devolve into a long and bloody insurgency. gaza could be far more violent than iraq. most iraqis never believed american troops were coming to drive them from their homes for good. many palestinians believe that's israel's goal. and how do you control an area that israeli air strikes are increasingly turning to rubble? our crew this morning following a rescue team in southern gaza where israel told palestinians to go for safety. they manage to pull out two girls, cutting and digging through debris for hours

both of them are named amal. yael is also trapped in gaza she's 3 years old and was kidnapped with her family by hamas on october 7th from kibbutz beeri. i met her uncle. are all these people from your family >> this is my family we're talking a little girl who was never away from her mother they're always together. they sleep together. and i don't even know if she is hugging her now. i don't know if they have food we don't know if they have water. we don't know if they're together i can't think about what's happening in gaza because it breaks my heart. >> reporter: later today, here in jerusalem, there will be memorials held for the 1,400 israelis killed one month ago and in support the 240 hostages still held by hamas. these attacks here compared to israel's 9/11.

>> richard engel, thank you very much it is 8 minutes passed the hour. welcome craig to the table >> good morning to you donald trump talking center stage and the witness stand at a civil fraud trial here in new york city. and there were plenty of fireworks inside and outside that courthouse. nbc's senior legal correspondent laura jarett has been covering this for us. laura, good morning to you. >> hey, craig, good morning. it was an extraordinary moment in that courtroom. the former president bringing the grievances from him so often heard on social media into live testimony from the witness stand. but he quickly saw the risks of treating his legal case like a campaign event the financial fraud case against donald trump entering a dramatic new chapter. the former president exploding on the witness stand, pushing back against accusations he, his sons and his name sake company artificially boosted his assets to get better deals from banks and lenders. >> see what a scam this is this is a case that should never have been brought.

it's a case that should be dismissed immediately. >> reporter: those familiar with the former president in the courtroom hallways, brought to life on the witness stand with mr. trump unleashing on the judge, pointing and yelling. he called me a fraud and he didn't know anything about me. a clear reference to the judge's pretrial decision, ruling in the state's favor. finding mr. trump liable for fraud. the judge losing patience monday, seemingly exasperated by what he characterized as mr. trump's rambling answers, warning the republican front runner, this is not a political rally. at one point, the back and forth between the two men growing so contentious, the judge suggested he might kick trump off the witness stand entirely because of his refusal to answer the state's questions without long speeches but he stayed put. and the state marks through year after year of financial statements, asking if he saw one from 2021. mr. trump said, quote, i was s busy in the white house saying

he was focused on china and russia seconds later, forced to admit he wasn't president at the time. >> at the end of the day, the only thing that matters are the facts and the numbers. and numbers, my friends, don't lie. >> so a lot to get to, obviously, with this, right. >> laura, you had a front seat i don't know if it was a front seat, but you were inside that courtroom to say this is not the normal trial situation. that's an understatement >> almost from the moment he entered the courtroom, a hush fell over the room it was so tense. and right away, he's giving long, long speeches and answers, and the judge interrupts him and says, stop, we don't need any speeches he's turning to mr. trump's attorneys. maybe you need to control your client maybe you need to take a break and it just devolved from there. the judge screaming at mr. trump, sit down, i don't wan to hear it, no, no, no the judge eventually does take a break. after he came back from the break, he was a lot more measured he allowed the former president a lot more leeway in his

testimony. and i think the state was enjoying that because he dug himself into some holes over that testimony >> what do you think happened? this is speculation, but do you think this is partly a strategy. the judge is the finder of fact. the judge is the one who's deciding everything in this case do you think it was the former president's strategy to rile up the judge and set up an appeal oh, this judge is biassed. look at what this judge said to me. >> it must be the strategy you never see a defendan seated so close to the judge screaming at the judge normally everybody is solicitous of the judge they want to make sure the judge is on their side it must be the case they're trying to lay the ground work for the appeal they think the best way to do it is to make the judge trip up to make some mistake that's a hook for an appeal, and the judge clearly, again, changing his tone onc he realized things had gone off the rails. >> it is crazy you had two grown men in a court screaming at each other. let's just call it what it is. what about on substance? i mean, did the former president scor any points for his side?

did the prosecution score any points >> it was so hard to pin him down when he's asked about things like financial statements, he signed, the letters to the insurers, i don't know, i probably saw it. i hope it was accurate so he's so squirrely on that stuff. at the end of the day, this is about credibility. to get on the stand an to say he was busy with russia and china in 2021 when he wasn't president, that will be an uphill battle for him. with this judge who's determining the penalty. >> thanks, laura. meantime, it is election day. we're watching key races on issues on ballots all across the country that could signal what to expect as the presidential campaign intensifies nbc's dasha burns is in iowa with more, including a surprise endorsement in that race hey, dasha, good morning >> reporter: hoda, that's right. good morning abortion is at the heart of several key elections takingellp contenders in th pace today that could

coveted endorsement of the race. this election day, voters are already heading to the polls in key states where the battle over abortion could play a major role in deciding races with national implications for 2024 >> are you ready to win this election >> reporter: in kentucky, democratic governor andy beshear is facing a re-election challenge from republican attorney general daniel cameron. >> i think we need new leadership in this state. >> reporter: he vetoed a 15-week abortion plan. and called the state law extremist because it doesn't allow exceptions for rape and incest cameron supports the law adding he will amend it to include those exceptions in ohio, voters will decide whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and in virginia, control of the

state legislature is up for grabs. if republicans win both chambers, it could allow glenn youngkin to implement a 15-week abortion ban, worrying many democratic voters. >> there is a lot of fear we could turn into a state that is not safe to be pregnant in >> reporter: meanwhile, the stage is set for the third republican debate in miami tomorrow with the top candidates preparing to face-off once again without the party's front runner, former president trump who is expected to hold his own rally in south florida. >> the next president of the united states. >> reporter: florida governor ron desantis touting what may be the biggest endorsement of the primary so far, from iowa's popular republican governor, kim reynolds. >> probably one of the most important elections of my lifetime, and so we need to make sure we get it right, and i truly believe that ron is the right candidate to win >> you believe trump can't win >> yeah, i believe he can't win? >> reporter: it's a much needed win for the desantis campaign which has invested significant

surrounding streets remain closed. also breaking in oakland, one woman is in the hospital after a car slammed into a home. it happened late last night on worth street near interstate 880. witnesses say that that first car hit a parked truck and then a car, before landing on its rooftop. neighbors sprang into action, saying they pulled that woman trapped inside of the car out. so far, there's no update on her condition. and right now police are still confirming that she was, indeed -- confirming she was, indeed the driver. the two people inside the home were not injured. let's get a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> it's a mostly clear and milder start to the day and it's going to be a nice afternoon. mostly sunny, only a slight chance of a stray shower. it will be slightly warmer tomorrow, and then as we approach veterans day our temperatures will drop in the morning but then recover to the upper 60s. the weekend is looking very nice

relationships with the two women. prosecutoring staying firm that arm strong killed wilson. >> the man in the middle of an alleged, when he took the stand in his ex-girlfriend's, accused of killing pro cyclist, anna mo wilson. >> the last thing she did on this earth was scream in terror. those screams were followed by ah! ah. two gunshots. >> reporter: strickland in a closely watched appearance at the high stakes trial getting into altercations with the media at the courthouse. strickland testifying that he had been romantically involved with wilson while he and armstrong were on a break. when they got back together, strickland said he remained in

contact with wilson. admitting he chose to save wilson's number under a fake name to avoid contact with armstrong. new text messages coming to light from may of last year. hours before her murder, wilson and strickland texting about their plans for the evening. strickland writing, want to go swimming? maybe swimming and a beverage. the two went to a local swimming pool and a restaurant before strigland dropped wilson off as her friend's apartment where she was later found dead. prosecutors say security cameras put armstrong's jeep at the scene of the crime. adding they believe jealousy fueled the yoga instructor to kill the 25-year-old cyclist. but the defense argues there was no direct or eyewitness evidence, proving armstrong's guilt. the defense also attempted to get strickland to undermine the prosecution's assertion armstrong was motivated by jealousy. how much weight if any will that carry? >> trying to introduce character

evidence that somebody wasn't a jealous person is going to be a hard sell to the jury in the face of all the circumstantial evidence. >> morgan, i'm curious. what did the defense have to say about that jeep being there at the scene? >> reporter: yeah, hoda. this is interesting. the defense was trying to suggest how many different people could have had access to the jeep that was seen outside the home where wilson was killed. while on the stand, strickland testified that he had shared the security code to get inside his house with about 30 other people and that his keys and armstrong's keys were often kept in a bowl in a common area of their shared house. hoda. >> morgan covering the trial in dallas, thank you, morgan. just ahead, the growing debate over the reach and risks of tiktok, it's driving a new push to ban that wildly popular app. but first, new images and an intense legal battle over what is being called the holy grail

museum exhibitions >> reporter: while colombi won't provide the exact location, experts say it is located right there. in 1708, the san jose was headed back to spain, loaded down with 200 tons of treasure taken from colombian and peruvian mines using slave labor. but it ran into a british warship which quickly sank the san jose nearly all of the 600 people onboard died for 300 years, no one knew its exact location in 1981, an american salvage company said it had discovered the wreckage but the colombian government declined to negotiate the salvage rights in 2015, they announced their own navy found the wreck in a different location, announcing plans to uncover the remains and place them in a national museum.

if you ask most chefs, they will tell you this is the cut of steak they like. basically it has a lot pof fat i it and creates a lot of flavor one of the things you asked me backstage is how do i get this at home to look like a restaurant steak. >> right. >> first of all, i season it liberally with salt and pepper on both sides. then i make a spice rub. and this spice rub is very, very simple it is like mustard, paprika, chili powder dried herbs, salt and pepper as you can see, i already have my cast iron pan i love using cast iron pan at home because it really holds the heat >> people think this rub is about flavor in the beat you eat, but this is about creating the crust, and that's part of the restaurant >> exactly i'm doing two things, creating lots of flavor i want to enhance. you notice, i'm only putting it on one side because i still want to taste the beef. you spend a lot of money on a good quality piece of beef i want to enhance the flavor of it it's also, as you said, getting in there and creating that crust on the outside and the contrast to texture is really, really important when it

comes to steak what you don't want is a gray steak. you want a nice, crusty, golden brown steak on the outside >> these are 2 inch thick, they are so large if i was cooking these, i would be worried about getting it right. right that it is so thick that you will bake this off at some point. is that a safe thing to do >> yes use your oven as your friend preheat it sere it on one side, turn it and then put it in the oven and let it turn through. >> you have to check with the thermometer. anybody can do it. >> 130, 135, something like that i want the fat to melt more than most people because i just think it makes the steak really juicy. >> should you let the steak get to room temperature. >> yes, absolutely not quite to room temperature, but you definitely want the steak to rest because you want the juices to chill out a little bit. once you slice the steak, you are going to let the -- the juices are too hot, they're going to run so you want it to cool down. >> what do you got here? >> we got blue cheese butter.
