strikes against targets in eastern syria. two locations were attacked, abu kamal and mayadin. this is the third strike against iranian and iranian-based bases. for the latest, let's go live to claudio lavanga who is following these and other developments in the region good morning what more can you tell us about the recent air strikes >> good morning, frances well, at least according to the pentagon, the strikes targeted a training facility and a safe house used by iran's revolutionary guard and other groups associated with it in eastern syria now. in a statement, the dod said the strikes were precise, proportionate and aimed at disrupting the capabilities of those responsible for recent attacks against u.s. forces in iraq and in syria. it also said the facilities were successfully destroyed, and they believe also the militias belonging to the revolutionary

guards of iran, but of course it is still unclear whether there were casualties among them frances? >> and claudio, turning to gaza now, there is disturbing news out of the al-shifa hospital in gaza city. what can you tell us about that? >> well, that's right. al-shifa is the largest hospital in the whole of gaza, at least according to the palestinian health ministry. it has been left without power since saturday morning following heavy bombardment and heavy fighting that has intensified around that complex now. at least according to the palestinian health ministry, at least 13 patients have -- including three babies have died throughout the weekend because of the lack of electricity and 35, at least 35 other babies were born prematurely are at risk of dying or to quote, they could possibly die at any moment since the start of the war, hospitals have been overwhelmed with people, patients of course people injured because of the heavy bombardment. but also people who are trying to seek shelters in those

hospitals. but nevertheless, they have become a target as well by israel and according to international law, hospitals are not supposed to be legitimate tax, but israel says that they are because they're being used as command centers by hamas. now benjamin netanyahu appeared on "meet the press" last night, saturday evening and kristen welker asked him whether these claims that they are being used as command centers justifies jeopardizing the lives of sick people and baskets. let's take a listen. >> and i think every civilian death, every dead baby is a tragedy. but that tragedy should be placed squarely on the responsibility of hamas that is keeping its military installations inside hospitals, its command posts inside hospitals, inside schools, inside unrwa, u.n. facilities and so on. so we obviously don't want to give them immunity >> of course we will continue to monitor the situation there. frances, phillip
