your sunday with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. you put it so perfectly. you said we are going from umbrellas to uggs. >> it's chilly out there. 40 degrees in vacaville. in the east bay, 42 to kick off our day in dublin. as we look at the radar, this system has pushed its way into the east, clearing the skies out for us on this sunday. it will be breezy at times, especially in those hills. so if you were thinking about blowing away all those leaves from the storm yesterday, might want to hold off on that. the hillsides could gust from about 15 to 30 miles an hour today, including parts of the santa cruz mountains and into the mt. hamilton range. tomorrow morning, the peak of this wind event is expected to happen. notice we're lighting the colors up in the reds and purples.

this is what we'll talk about for the remainder of this weekend. as we go into the holiday week, we should see the temperatures warm up just a little bit. the winds subside. so we'll look at that forecast in a little bit. >> cinthia, thanks. any time this weather is moving through the bay area, our free nbc bay area app is a great tool tov. you get access to the radar and alerts sent straight to your phone when the rain is about to come down in your neighborhood. new this morning, a health advisory for the people in the east bay is lifted after a fire at marathon martinez renewal fuels. the advisory was isued around 12:30 this morning, warning that people with respiratory conditions could be affected. it was initially reported as a level two incident.

the fire was extinguished within about an hour by 1:30 this morning. at least one person was injured. we continue to follow developing news out of the typically quiet east bay community of san ramone, where police are investigating the kidnapping and robbery of an amazon delivery driver. the driver says a man and woman forced him from one atm to another. it held at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. after that, he says they forced him to another bank in dublin. now law enforcement agencies are involved. police are still searching for the couple. marianne favro tells us about his terrifying ordeal. >> reporter: police say it all started here at this intersection when a man and woman driving in a dark colored suv hit an amazon delivery

truck. police say after the crash here at san ramone valley boulevard, a woman jumped out and into the amazon driver's truck. police say she coerced him into driving to the bank of america on crow canyon police. then the man driving the suv that hit the amazon truck followed them to the bank, and the couple forced the victim to withdraw money. but it didn't end there. officers say the couple ordered the victim to get inside their own suv, and they drove him nine miles away to the b of a in dublin. miss say again the couple ordered the amazon driver to withdraw cash from that bank. >> that sounds scary, because we are coming here quite often. it's always safe, so this is surprising this happened. >> reporter: officers say when the withdrawal in dublin was unsuccessful, the suspects took off in a dark-colored suv. miss say the victim was left

behind and was not hurt. he did not know the suspects. the victim later returned to san ramone where he talked to investigators. we also saw amazon employees load boxes from the victim's truck into another truck. as police search for the suspects tonight, some say it's a wakeup call. >> you have to be more careful. >> reporter: marianne favro, "today in the bay." we have developing news from sacramento where thousands have gathered for the california democrater convention. the big focus is the senate seats, but instead protestors demanding a cease-fire in gaza took center stage. >> cease-fire now! cease-fire now! >> that crowd interrupted proceedings inside the convention. outside, pro-palestinian demonstrators clashed with supporters of israel, stealing the israeli flag. a lot of division and debate. in the end, representative

barbara lee won the most endorsement votes for the vacant senate seat let by late senator dianne feinstein. some welcome progress to report from israel this morning. the palestinian red crescent society, a local extension of the international red cross, worked with the world health organization to evacuate 31 very sick premature infants from al-shifa hospital, and they are now inside the rafah crossing. this comes as sources say that u.s., israeli and hamas negotiators are reportedly closing in on a deal to release some of the hostages taken during the october 7th terror attack in exchange for a pause in fighting. but the sources caution nothing yet has been finalized. "the washington post" is reporting the u.s. is brokering the agreement that would suspend the war for five days. it would free dozens of women and children, who are being held hostage, and it would allow more humanitarian aid into gaza.

concern about the captives along with the high number of palestinian civilian casualties have put mounting pressure on israel to wage its war with hamas differently. more than 100 countries have called for a full and immediate cease-fire. the u.s. is not among those countries, however. we turn now to a somber day of remembrance. yesterday marking 45 years since the jonestown massacre. in 1977, jim jones led his followers from his people's temple church in redwood valley near ukiah, to jonestown. in 1978, he led a mass murder/suicide, which claimed more thanned00 lives. congresswoman jackie speiers survived five gunshot wounds. there were two events yesterday,

and among attendants, john cobb, whose family members died. >> they were great people. they were beautiful people. it's sad and terrible, the tragedy that happened to them. but we try to come here not so much to mourn, because mourning for 45 years, you can only mourn for so long. we come to remember them. >> jones founded the people's church in indiana in the '50s before moving to san francisco in 1965. members of his church set up sites in other places, including los angeles and jonestown. cleanup continues in san francisco now that the international apec summit is over. but while world leaders are gone, the impacts are being felt. and neighbors are left wondering what changes they saw during apec could stay. >> reporter: while the summit is

over, there are still a few road closures around the mosconi center, which the city is working to remove. san francisco is unraveling the extensive security measures it installed for the apec summit. there's still some traffic around the langering barricades. the city says it expects all the roads, parking garages and transit to go back to normal by monday morning. >> it's great. it's clean, for sure. >> reporter: visitors in san francisco saturday said the city felt especially clean and safe to them. >> i hope they can maintain this. do we need more leaders like xi jinping and everybody to come and have them clean this place? >> reporter: the mayor told raj mathai this week she is optimistic, as long as the city can continue getting people housed and stopping drug dealers. >> we believe we can definitely maintain this in the communities

welcome back. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, nbc news chief white house correspondent and moderator of "meet the press." thanks for joining us this morning. joe biden here in the bay area making a lot of news at the apec conference. you have a new poll out this morning. we are seeing his approval rating actually taking a dive. you have a new look at that with a math man, steve kornacki and his khaki pants. what's that new poll revealing about biden and equally i assume trump? >> this poll is a stunner. it was a stunner for our pollsters. here's why. one, for the first time in the history of our poll, former president trump is beating joe biden. it's only by two points, so it's

within the margin of error. we're still a year out. but it is a significant shift in our polling. what is dragging the president's poll numbers down? well, for one, he's getting low marks on his handling of foreign policy, particularly the war between israel and hamas, with young voters abandoning him over this issue. one pollster said that he cannot recall a foreign entanglement that doesn't involve u.s. troops that is transformed the electorate. well, our poll is different and is the outlier in that regard. so that is why this is such a shocker. we are also seeing him lose support among other key groups. women voters under the age of 50. voters of color. even voters in states that went for joe biden in 2020. so there are a lot of really significant headlines. democratic strategists will see this as a wakeup call.

i've been talking to them in the wake of some of these other polls that showed tuff news for joe biden. they say the key is, he needs to start making a sharper contrast between himself and his predecessor, former president trump. he needs to make this a choice election and focus on the differences between himself and his predecessor and find a new way to talk about the economy because that is still the number one issue for voters. so there is a lot in this poll. as you say, the great steve kornacki is here to break it down for us. >> we look forward to your talk with him. thanks for joining us. we hope you have a happy thanksgiving. we hope you join kristen for this morning's "meet the press." she'll have an interview with deputy national security adviser john finer, as well as interviewing with former governor chris christie, as well as senator richard blumenthal. stick with us for "today in the bay" and "meet the press" is on at 8:00 a.m.

coming up, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll look at how social media is influencing politics as we head into that 2024 presidential election cycle. spacex has made headway in its mission to help nasa explore the moon. it successfully launched its mega rocket starship into space. this test flight took off from texas yesterday morning. it separated from its booster after lifting off. spacex lost contact about ten minutes later. the company says an automated system on board the rocket probably triggered it to self-destruct, which is a standard safety measure. spacex achieved important milestones with that test flight. the comment is draymond green.

every day at the fair, it's christmas eve. shop for gifts at the lamp lit stores that line the streets and visit father christmas, ebenezer scrooge. it runs through december 17th and will be open the day after thanksgiving. yesterday was a busy day for our nbc bay area and telemundo 48 crews. we kicked off our nourishing neighbors food drive. you may have seen some of us out there yesterday, including cinthia pimentel and myself. we were out at 13 bay area safeway stores for the start of the campaign. all of our team members at 13 stores. for many people struggling to meet ends meet, the holidays can be stressful. that's why for the 14th year in a row, we have raised money for local food banks who rely on donations.

and get yourself prepared for the workweek ahead. we have beautiful skies, a little wind already out there in san francisco. and temperatures in the 40s and 50s this morning. as this low pressure system pushes towards the east and we get ready for what's ahead, let's rewind a little bit. what happened friday and saturday with that rain? measuring more than 2 1/2 inches on the peak of mt. tam. over an inch in san francisco and a little less into the east bay. now, today no rain in the forecast, clear skies, but it will get breezy. hold on cleaning up any of those leaves from yesterday's storms and just prepare yourself for ugg season as the temperatures only warm up in the 60s. 64 in oakland. 60 in livermore. here's when the winds pick up.

this. do we need more leaders like xi jinping and everybody come to have them clean this place? >> crews will be dismantling the last of the barriers. all roads and muni services will be back to normal tomorrow morning. getting guns off the streets and helping beautify the town, oakland police held a gun buyback yesterday. the department partnered with guns to gardens. they take surrendered firearms and forge them into garden tools, like that shovel. those tools are used to help beautify the city. the program began in 2022. this is the third buyback event. there was an incentive to hand over their weapons. people who vended guns could receive up to $300 for each firearm. opd says more than 40 weapons were surrendered yesterday.

automaker stellantis confirmed it has ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the united auto workers. according to the vote tracker, the deal was supported by more than 68% of workers at the stellantis plant who voted. the contract ratifications come weeks after the automakers and union reached a deal, ending six weeks of strikes by the uaw. the agreements are record setting for that union. moving you forward on this year's holiday travel season, kicking into high gear this week. san jose airport says it anticipates a busy few weeks ahead. the peak travel period for thanksgiving began friday. it extends until tuesday, november 28th. nationally, aaa projects more than 4 million people will fly over thanksgiving, a 6% increase compared to last year, the highest number of thanksgiving

travelers since 2005. next tuesday and wednesday are expected to be the busiest travel days at airports. the sunday after thanksgiving is typically the busiest day to return home. experts say plan ahead. >> wednesday through sunday, aaa is project thing to be the third highest thanksgiving on record since we have been watching holiday travel since 2000. >> nearly 50 million americans will be on the road. aaa says you should avoid driving on wednesday. instead, leave tuesday or get up very early thanksgiving morning to hit the road. could science be on a shortened path to one of the biggest discoverying of alltime? our scott mcgrew says new tools could lead to the question, are we alone? >> there's an interesting discussion about all the new tools that nasa is using to explore space. things like the james webb telescope, which found hundreds

one thing you might want to bring out the door is a sweater. walnut greek, waking up in the 40s at this hour, warming up into the 60s this afternoon. but mostly clear skies around the bay area, and definitely a chilly day out in livermore, as it looks to be one of the cooler temperatures today. 64 in hayward and 62 in mountain view. overall, a chilly day and a breezy day as we see that low pressure system has exited from

the bay area. we'll see clear skies, sunshine for your afternoon around the bay area. a few clouds will roll in tonight, but nothing too bad. here are those hour by hour wind gusts that will be the focus of our weather this afternoon and into monday. this afternoon, focus more on the south bay, the santa cruz mountains east of morgan hill. and the winds picking up in the north bay, which will be where that wind event will focus into the early morning hours of monday. so watch the colors turn into the darker reds and purples. winds from 25 to 45 miles per hour, so a day where you want to make sure that everything is tied down. avoid any outdoor burning and make sure that you have more caution around our bay area bridges as we go into the next couple of hours. as we get past this wind event, monday, tuesday, the temperatures will pick up just a little bit. back into the low 70s in the north bay.

three-timetable champion lily jang is exceeding this weekend as she hope toss secure a spot on team usa. she helped representative team, the bay area blasters as a table tennis compcompetition. this is the league's inaugural system. victories qualify the team for the upcoming paris olympics. the team can send three players to paris, and they will be determined by the olympic trials in the spring. she said she remembers the opening ceremony of her first olympics when she was 16. >> i was like serea witness to my left, coby bryant to my right. this cemented the belief that i have the capability to keep going and go for more and get better results. i'm hoping to medal for team usa. >> wow.

lily zhang was born in redwood city and went to berkeley. not only has she competed in the olympics three times, she is a six-time national pro. she's ranked in the top 50 in the world. 7:47 right now. it is no secret that americans are major consumers of social media, opinions on countless issues and are ready digested by millions. a poll by the pew research center this year found about 2/3 of americans said they think social media is bad for democracy. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us now. good morning. great to see you as always. how dependant are we on social media for our views? i know what people tell me. >> you know what? i can't get over that last bit you did. 2/3 say it's bad for democracy. >> and yet -- >> yes, everybody is doing it, at least lots of people are.

pew, the same organization you referred to, did a poll on how much people rely on social media. really for the regularly for their news. take a look at these things. facebook, almost a third. it goes down from there. you youtube, about a quarter. x, formally known as twitter. these are large amounts of people who, yes, democracy is threatened, but they rely on these platforms for their information. >> it's a part of their lives. it's affecting our political outcomes, right? it is how we process our information or disinformation. >> all of these organizations say, we abhor any type of information that's not true. lies and what not on our platforms.

welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following on this sunday morning, including that story out of the typically quiet community of san ramone, where police are investigating the kidnapping and robbery of an amazon delivery driver. it happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon when a man and a woman in a dark colored suv hit an amazon truck. the woman forced herself into the amazon truck, forced the driver to the bank of america in san ramone. the man followed them in his suv, where they then forced him to withdraw money. officers say the couple then ordered him into their own suv, drove him to bank of america in dublin. miss say that when the amazon

drivers' withdrawal in dublin didn't work, his captors abandoned him. they are still on the loose. fortunately, that driver was not hurt. some welcome news out of the middle east to report where 31 very sick premature infants are now inside the rafah crossing in safety. this comes as sources say that u.s., israeli and hamas negotiators are closing in on a deal to release some of the hostages taken during the october 7th terror attack in exz change for a pause in fighting. "the washington post" is reporting that the u.s. is brokering the agreement to suspend the war for five days and free dozens of women and children being held hostage and allow more humanitarian aid into gaza. it's all because of concern about the captives, the high number of palestinian civilian casualties, which is putting pressure on israel to wage its war differently with hamas.
