"early today" starts right now good morning i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. the nation is mourning the loss of a former first lady who dedicated her life to serving others memorials will begin for rosalynn carter next monday with a ceremony at georgia's southwestern state university. then the public can pay their respects at the jimmy carter presidential library in atlanta.

a funeral will be held wednesday in plains, georgia, where she and the love of her life spent most of their years together for more on rosalynn's legacy, here is kelly o'donnell. >> reporter: the long and consequential life of rosalynn carter ended where it began, at home in plains, georgia, with family by her side she had entered home hospice care friday. and when she passedway away, president carter shared this "rosalynn was my equal partner in everything i ever accomplished she gave me wise guidance and encouragement when i needed it as long as rosalynn was in the world, i always knew somebody loved and supported me at age 99, president carter has been in home hospice care for nine months. their last public appearance was in september, and a surprise, one last ride in the plains peanut festival. >> today she was put in hospice, i was on the phone with the family

and i was speaking to her grand son. and the family was just showing up >> reporter: in norfolk, with military families, first lady jill biden >> she was well-known for her efforts on mental health and care giving and women's rights >> it's now my pleasure to introduce someone home with i love and respect and cherish, my wife rosalynn. >> reporter: their marriage spanned longer than any other first couple, more than 77 years. but more than time, they shared their life's work, values, and remarkably, their childhoods too. she was born eleanor rosalynn smith, a neighbor to the carters. >> i was shy and found that he was so easy to talk to we just kind of hit it off really well. i think i was already in love with him. >> reporter: a proud navy wife when they married in 1946. later, she helped manage the family peanut business and community ties that led to

>> rosalynn carter was 96 years old. now to the other big story dominating the news, gaza, where around 240 hostages are currently being held by hamas and islamic jihad. they are of every stripe, from soldiers to farmers. there are toddlers and seniors and this morning, there is renewed hope for them as sources confirm to nbc news the negotiators are closing in on a deal with hamas to release some of them. for the latest, let's go live to claudio lavanga. claudio, good morning. what do we know about these negotiations >> good morning, phillip well, according to the sources who spoke to nbc news, negotiators from israel, hamas and the united states have been meeting for weeks now in qatar are closing in on a deal to secure at least some of the hostages held in gaza in exchange of a pause in the fighting but these sources warn that no decision has been made, the final decision has been made yet. and israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu during a press conference on saturday called the rumors unfounded. now netanyahu has been under

severe pressure by the hostage -- the families of those who are being held hostage since the start of the war and the families are now walking for the past five days, they've been walking from tel aviv to jerusalem to demand action by the government in securing their release. in the meantime, the israeli military continues to try to find evidence that al-shifa hospital in gaza has been used as some sort of a command center by hamas during the war. now on sunday, they showed some secure footage -- security footage from the hospital in which they say shows two of the hostages, two foreign worker, one from nepal and the other from thailand being forcibly taken inside the hospital by armed hamas fighters now also they showed a video of what they say shows a tunnel under the compound now staying on al-shifa hospital, the palestinian health authorities say at least 30 premature babies are now being

evacuated and transferred to a hospital in egypt. now, as you may remember, several premature babies have died throughout the week after the power went out and fighting intensified around the hospital. now yusef, which is one of the u.n. bodies helping the evacuations said unfortunately two of those babies being transferred didn't make the journey or didn't survive the journey. phillip? >> the most innocent victims of all. all right, claudio, thank you. argentina has forged a new path for itself by electing a radical outsider to the presidency javier milei trounced his rival, a former economy minister by 12 points according to official results. milei takes over a country in economic crisis, but analysts question whether his policies will do much to help he was nicknamed el loco by a biographer and has also been compared to donald trump the former u.s. president did take to truth social to congratulate him on the election, predicting milei will

make argentina great again back here at home, the former president picked up a big endorsement of his own texas governor greg abbott announced his support for trump in the 2024 race during a campaign event in south texas. and a new nbc news poll shows donald trump leading president biden 46% to 44% that's the first time our polling has shown the former president leading, but that two-point lead is well within the poll's margin of error more churches are breaking away from the methodist denomination in 2019, the denomination upheld a ban on same-sex weddings and clergy, but some members have been critical about the rules not being enforced more than 700 affiliations have disaffiliated since 2019 and a new denomination called the global methodist church was launched by conservatives. good news to start the week

for california commuters eastbound and westbound lanes along i-10 are back open in downtown los angeles crews have worked around the clock to reopen the highway after a massive fire scorched the freeway a week and a half ago. however, on and off-ramps are still closed, and officials warn drivers to expect intermittent lane closures over the coming weeks. the dominican republic is bracing for more rain this morning after a violent storm sparked widespread flooding. officials there say at least 20 people were killed including several trapped under a highway tunnel that collapsed. the rain sent or the rernts of water through the streets, washing away vehicles and damaging roads according to a president of the caribbean nation, it was the country's largest rainfall event ever witif you think hitting the road early might help avoid travel troubles, think again michelle grossman is here tracking a system that is bringing storms across this country. morning. >> good morning. it's a big storm we're seeing a storm emerging out of the plains that's

bringing all sorts of trouble. snow in the rockies. that's going to pile up a bit. and we're looking on the warm side lots of rain, even looking at the chance for severe storms as we go throughout the evening hours, the nighttime hours winds will be gusting up to 75 miles per hour in some of these storms and looking on radar, you can see the storms are already happening. we have really heavy rain falling. that's where you see the darker colors, the reds, the oranges, the yellows, and seeing portions into the southern plains this is what it looks like this area of low pressure is going to move off to the north and east pockets of heavy rain from the gulf to the great lakes. we're concerned about tornadoes. some will be strong in spots also the chance for hail, damaging winds i mentioned 75 miles per hour. and going to move into the northeast tomorrow we're look at even a little snow in portions of new england to the interior parts of the northeast. lots of heavy rain along the east coast so tomorrow is going to be another tough travel day it's out of here for the most part on wednesday. we have lingering snow showers in portions ofhe southern plain
