ahead, team coverage on what to keep in mind as you head out the door, from filling up your tank if you're hitting the road, to weather advisories if you're flying to the east coast. the key deadline san francisco may potentially miss, and approved new projects. a former police officer who shot and killed a man in an east bay walmart, we're live with an unprecedented move alameda county district attorney may be poised to make. this is "today in the bay." and good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a bit. first, let's check the forecast with meteorologist kari hall, tracking what we can expect. >> it's starting out cold. probably before you get out of bed this morning you know that it is cold out there. we are feeling those temperatures dropping around the bay area, and if you haven't yet turned on the heater inside your
5:02 am
home, the temperature is most likely dropping before you even peel back those covers. so we're going to see temperatures starting out at 40 degrees in santa rosa, we're already seeing some 30s in palo alto and dublin. and even though we have a cold start, it's actually going to be a warmer day. we're headed for the low 70s in san jose, a big jump in temperatures compared to what we have right now, with some mid to upper 60s for much of the interior east bay. so we'll get a look at the rest of our thanksgiving week forecast coming up. mike, you're tracking an ongoing issue. >> an hour ago this crash on highway 87 had the whole freeway blocked. you might think it's northbound based on the sensor reading, but it's southbound. the crash blocking the fast lane only, visible to traffic in the opposite direction. this is at curtner. it blocks one lane, the commuters are likely distracted by activities. there's slowing from capitol
5:03 am
expressway to curtner. hopefully it will clear up once the last lane clears. the rest of the bay showing a nice, easy drive. we have a crash in it looks like san leandro. we'll check on the status for the nimitz, but i don't see any slowing. there is light slowing out of the altamont. we had a lighter commute yesterday. we'll talk more about that coming up. in just a few hours a high-profile case involving a former san leandro police officer, charged with voluntary manslaughter goes back to court. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live from the east bay. what's the issue before the judge today, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura, and marcus. we know there's a hearing scheduled at 9:00 in oakland court and that alameda county district attorney pamela price is trying to remove the case from the defense attorney, one of the defense attorneys representing that former san leandro police officer. the d.a. has charged that former san leandro police officer, jason fletcher, with voluntary manslaughter for allegedly
5:04 am
shooting and killing 33-year-old steven taylor inside a busy walmart store when responding to a call about an alleged shoplifting inside the store. the encounter was caught on body camera and shows taylor with a baseball bat in his hands when fletcher fired. according to court documents, taylor had allegedly grabbed the aluminum bat and a tent before trying to leave without paying. as the case comes to trial, price has filed an unusual motion. she wants the officer's high-profile attorney, michael rains and his firm, removed from the case. price claims rains illegally received inside information from a disgruntled prosecutor who was also a former client, according to a declaration filed by rains, that former prosecutor, butch ford, paints a picture of a d.a. team out to get fletcher. ford claims another prosecutor told him, quote, if it were up to me, i would charge him with murder. here is d.a. price when she spoke last month exclusive by
5:05 am
with our own jody hernandez. >> mike rains should no longer be on this defense because he illegally, improperly violated his oath as an attorney and took advantage of another client to gain confidential information that belongs to this office. >> it's desperate. they want me off the case because they know they're going to lose the case while i remain on it, and they will. >> reporter: rains calls the motion to remove him from the case an act of desperation. he also claims the information the d.a. is referring to was taken from a formal complaint filed by ford and not obtained illegally. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. well, this morning hayward police are looking for a group of thieves who made off with four vehicles from a car dealership over the weekend. the heist is captured on surveillance video. it happened sunday morning.
5:06 am
investigators say the group targeted city motors on mission boulevard. they used an axe to break the lockbox filled with keys and then drove off with the vehicle. one thief in this video, one thief crashing through the dealership glass doors right here with that mercedes g wagon, that vehicle worth more than $100,000. the dealership glass doors are now boarded up and you can still see shattered glass on the sidewalk of the street. the thieves also stole two other vehicles off the lot. the general manager says the damage is extensive. >> vehicles stolen and plus the car that got damaged, i would say over $100,000, close to $200,000. and 30 to 40 in keys, damages from taking the keys and remaking keys. >> now, the general manager also says the dealership was robbed a couple of years ago, but the thieves didn't take any expensive cars or cause much
5:07 am
damage. san francisco is at a point where it could lose local control of its housing approval process. the "chronicle" reports city leaders must move quickly to meet a state deadline six days from now when the city must sign off on a new ordinance meant to reduce red tape and allow the fast tracking of more housing construction, minus the interference from city planners. supervisors have yet to hear the ordinance and it may not be approved until month at the earliest. planners believe there may be a lag time, including a warning letter from the state and other steps before the city would ever lose full control. we're turning to a live look at sfo airport, just like this one here, bracing for the busiest time over the next few days of holiday travel. tsa expecting to screen 30 million travelers across the country. >> and the rise of people working remotely, there could be an extended holiday travel period. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson has a look as folks are
5:08 am
heading out. >> reporter: the holiday travel season is here. aaa predicts more than 55 million americans will travel at least 50 miles from their homes. >> we get out on a monday and we come right back after, before the crowds come. >> reporter: the busiest travel times are expected to be today and wednesday and the sunday after thanksgiving. the biden administration says steps have been taken to minimize disruptions, including adding new direct routes and opening up military air space to commercial traffic. >> we've got people literally working around the clock and across the country on aviation safety. we're going to continue that and accelerate it. >> reporter: stormy weather across parts of the country could caused headaches for travelers this holiday. >> we are seeing some weather systems that could play a role and affect flights. it's going to be especially important to build a little bit of cushion into your plans. >> reporter: for drivers hitting the road, experts say you can expect to see the cheapest gas
5:09 am
prices since 2020. and lower food prices are driving down the cost of thanksgiving dinner this year. >> because wages are rising, this thanksgiving dinner is the fourth cheapest ever as a percentage of average earnings. >> reporter: annual holiday traditions are already under way at the white house. president biden pardoned turkeys liberty and bell monday, while first lady jill biden and military families welcomed the white house christmas tree. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. mike has good news for those hitting the roads this week. gas prices are said to be dipping nationwide. he's going to show us some of the cheaper gas prices we can fill up. >> cheaper. >> we'll get to this in just a bit. first, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the potential weather woes for a lot of people, especially on the east coast. >> you know, if there are travel delays on the east coast that basically affects the entire
5:10 am
country. you start to see those delays start to ripple down. we're going to see at least for the west some clear conditions, but then take a look at all of the storms that are anywhere from green bay all the way down to the panhandle of florida for today. so this is a cold front that's moving off toward the east, back behind that temperatures have been relatively chilly and we are seeing some milder conditions here along parts of the west. now, as far as travel delays for now, i know it's early, but we are not seeing any travel delays, especially because of weather. so we are looking good for the start of the day, but the later we go in the day most likely we'll start to see some of those delays starting to add up. as we take a look at our forecast here, it is going to be a beautiful day. i know it's cold out there now, but we are going to see temperatures headed for the low 70s for san mateo, 73 in santa rosa, and upper 60s for parts of the east bay and into the tri-valley. tomorrow we're also looking at more of the same conditions as
5:11 am
we get a mix of sun and clouds. there will be a slight chance that parts of the north bay could see some rain. so we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up. mike, where are those lower gas prices? >> we're looking, they are following -- the good news, we'll start with the national level. drivers can expect the cheapest gas prices on thanksgiving since 2020, nationally the average price for a gallon of gas is expected to fall to $3.25 on thursday, but still higher in san jose and the bay area. of course, prices have been dropping for about three weeks overall in our area due to low demand and a drop in oil prices. prices here in california are still well above the national average. the average today looking like $4.91, down from a week ago where it was $5.07. let's take a look at some of the prices. we will start in san jose, it's been here at $4.03, the best price, the cash price at kwik serv on alum rock avenue. that's lower than the $4.91
5:12 am
we've been talking about. on the peninsula, redwood city, the shell on woodside road is holding at $4.39 a gallon and tied with richmond's best, chevron on bloom drive. it's $4.39, the lowest there as well. thank you for sharing those prices around the bay on gasbuddy.com. let's get on the roadway. i do want to talk about travel. we've seen travel shift around since covid, then remote working. so things will be a little different than years past. some folks are already at their destination and that might be why aaa and waze are saying instead of the eastshore freeway, wednesday's worst travel will be likely -- sunday's worst travel will likely be highway 17. data shows that a lot of folks are coming up highway 17. my guess is because in the last few years they've chosen to take a local getaway instead of traveling across country. this is based on historical data from the last couple of years. back to you. >> interesting. good to know, too. >> the more you know. >> keep watching "today in the
5:13 am
bay.." no matter where you are, thanksgiving dinner won't come cheap, but the cost in some places run a lot higher than others. coming up next, where the bay area ranks when it comes to the priciest places to celebrate. plus, united airlines wants plus, united airlines wants you to fly the friendly skies, i

i was like shaking you know, i was so scared. when i first reached out to jacoby and meyers. i didn't know if i had a case or not. as soon as i got a hold of my attorney, she was very, very nice, very kind. because of jacoby and meyers, i don't have that pressure to worry about a medical bill or things like that. if i know of any accident, i'm like, call jacoby and meyers, they'll help you.

sky, but it is going to be chilly. only 44 degrees at 8:00. we'll be at 60 degrees, a nice warm-up going into the afternoon. but we will see more clouds moving in. we'll talk about the potential of where we could see some rain and what's ahead in our thanksgiving forecast coming up. and what's ahead if you're heading across the bay bridge, both directions very smooth drive right now. there's a little more volume coming from the bay bridge toll plaza, so we will track it. tuesday does tend to see a higher volume of traffic and it is the tuesday before vacation for thanksgiving. we might see a lot of folks heading to the office. we'll track your early commute coming up. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. we get the fed minutes today, existing home sales as well. the stock market rally continues. those who doubted it may be regretting it. both microsoft and nvidia both at all-time highs. nvidia, which makes those super powerful chips used in ai reports profits this afternoon. microsoft praised for handling the openai debacle so well.

no real changes to tell you about in that story. sam altman is still out as ceo there. the openai board unexpectedly fired him on friday. he's been hired on at microsoft. his team over at openai, hundreds of them, wrote a letter threatening to quit and follow him to microsoft. see those names there at the very bottom? those names go on for every page after that. the long story short is openai, the maker of chatgpt, will continue. either because the entire staff leaves and goes over to microsoft and continues to work there, or openai hires altman back, everybody stays, and life goes on. president joe biden has joined thread, the twitter alternative offered by meta. this as twitter, what we now call x, suffers more deflections after accusations of anti-semitism. elon musk did as promised and sued media matters. he calls it a thermonuclear

5:20 am
compared to other places. money geek made a list of some of the most expenses to pay for dinner in the bay area, and we come in fifth most expensive. paying about $156 for a full thanksgiving meal. in seattle, washington, it costs about $175 to make a dinner for six people. in honolulu, it's about $160. and in portland it's about $159. in philadelphia, people are paying an average of $158. >> in hawaii, it might be the fact that everyone is imported. >> that's true. i'm surprised it wasn't higher. trending this morning, the holiday season is swinging into full gear, and downtown ice in san jose held its official opening ceremony. >> if you're in need of some cheer to get you in the holiday spirit, look no further than our own mike inouye. >> hey, guys.
5:21 am
the ice, downtown san jose! we're making a double effort. we're right here on the ice and we want to show you we've got skills. so let's show them what it's all about. >> let's try this. ready, mike? >> one, two, three! >> whoo! >> i thought you two were holding each other up. >> he's on skates. >> sneaker skates. that's a new thing. >> exactly right. also, i couldn't even keep steady with those. guilermo is a great skater. he gave a tour of the telemundo studio on his hands. he was walking on his hands. >> i don't think i've seen that. >> i'll share that on my page. >> wow. >> and then they're like, all right, kari, you're next. you need to do the next promo walking on your hands. >> kari has video of skydiving. >> did you ever skate? >> no, i did not.
5:22 am
i can skate enough to get around, but my ankles are not super strong. >> next year. >> next year. i'll start training. >> it's officially open for everyone. >> yes, it is. >> fun. >> it was supposed to open to friday, but we had that rain. they knew about it, so they did have to cancel that. it's open now. the weather is perfect. it's going to be nice these next few days. we are going to see some more clouds coming in. you can see the clouds that are rolling in, but notice that there's no green on here. so even though there's a lot of white, with the clouds there's no green showing any rain. so it's kind of a dry system that's passing by, but will bring in a mix of sun and clouds for today. we're starting out with some chilly temperatures. right now we're in the low 40s in dublin. in oakland, it is 44 degrees. san jose at 46. and after this cold start, it's going to be a very nice day, with hayward reaching 71 degrees. we'll see mid-60s in martinez
5:23 am
and novato reaching 68 degrees today. into the day tomorrow, it is slightly warmer for parts of the north bay. overall we're going to see some of the same temperatures that will continue into thanksgiving as well. but then after that, it's going to cool off as a very quick-moving and very dry cold front moves through. it does look to bring parts of the area some rain, but our chances are very slight here. we'll see more dry conditions going into the weekend, as well as early next week. take a look at santa rosa and what to expect. so we're headed for the upper 60s, low 70s from now through thursday, and then after that we'll only see highs in the mid-60s and expect those mornings to be very cold, maybe even freezing at times. we're looking at close to freezing temperatures for the weekend for the inland areas after the system passes by on thanksgiving. so we'll be watching that. mike, you were tracking the traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> i saw the volume start to build and i was getting excited that perhaps we would have
5:24 am
heavier traffic for the earlier commute, maybe have some other stuff to report. i can report that it's lightened up again. no problem here. looking at other spots, barely any slowing for highway 37. just showed up in the last two minutes. no slowing for highway 4. those are the early signs. we do have one crash south 880 at his sper yen, no slowing. >> next, nbc bay area responds. >> good morning. some savvy grocery shoppers are cutting part of their food budget in half, and maybe you can, too. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you how nt on "todexay

5:32 am
meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect today. >> it's a cold start, but we have some nice weather ahead, and we're going to start out with our temperatures across parts of the bay area in the 30s and 40s, but the sky is also clear, the wind is calming down, and we are seeing some quiet conditions across much of the bay area, with our current temperature now at 38 in dublin. it is 42 in sonoma and 46 in san jose. looking at some of our east bay cities, oakland headed for 69 degrees today, hayward 71, and mostly mid to upper 60s moving through the east bay, from san ramon to antioch to concord. we will have milder weather today. mike, you're updating the crash on highway 87. >> the great news is that a big amount of slowing that was northbound past curtner has cleared up. the crash is still southbound, but on the shoulder, away from opposite direction. your morning commute easy through the south bay, easy around most of the bay. the altamont pass, not a lot of

slowing. there is a little slowing toward the crash reported between a street and hesperian. we have slowing and i believe that will clear up in the next few seconds. we are looking at one stretch, see the exclamation point above oakland? that's highway 13, there is some emergency repair work there. my map system shows it as closed, but other systems don't show it closed completely. so use caution if you're heading through the area. 580 takes you roughly the same area, a little longer if you're coming from other parts of contra costa county. back to you. >> thank you very much. 5:32. new overnight, one person is in the hospital after a fire destroys a home. firefighters say it was packed to the brim on the peninsula. it started a little after 11:00 p.m. on meadow lane near middlefield road in redwood city. firefighters described the home as being one of a hoarder. when they arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and a downed power line. at this point we don't know the condition of the person hospitalized.
5:34 am
it's believed there were others in the home who made it out safely. the cause of the fire is under investigation. firefighters say it may have started as an issue with a water heater. developing right now, new advice from the head of the cdc. she's urging everyone to go the extra mile when it comes to protecting themselves from illness. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us with the best ways to get ahead of all of those respiratory illnesses. >> chances are you've heard someone around you say there's something going on. turns out there are a few things. hv.1 is an omicron subvariant, and as such, it is highly transmissible. you can spread it very easily. the main symptoms for this particular variant seem to be congestion, sore throat, dry cough. really upper respiratory. people, though, are still reporting all of the other classic covid symptoms as well. now, an updated booster became available in september, but only
5:35 am
14% of adults have gotten that booster, and just 5% of kids, and 75% of people skipped the booster last year. the new cdc director was on the "today" show this morning with three reasons why you should get up to date. >> one, the virus has changed. so you want the most updated protection you can get. second, if you had covid before or you've been vaccinated, that protection has decreased over time. so you want the boosted protection. and people are still getting long covid, long symptoms from that virus, even if you get a mild case. >> on top of covid, the flu season got off to an early start. maybe you know someone who had the flu during the summer. cases are still rising in california, also in seven other states, which you should know if you're traveling through this holiday. at this point, just about one-third of people are vaccinated against the flu. now, the cdc director, cohen, is new, just six months on the job. she says testing is going to be
5:36 am
really critical so you know what you're working with, because there are therapeutics, there's paxlovid, and then there's mom's chicken soup if you have a cold. at least you'll know what you're working with. >> and you're able to get those tests now. >> reporter: that's right. the government is offering you four free tests. you just have to go to covidtests.gov. >> i ordered some last night. >> they come really fast. >> my husband was, like, another package? no, this one is free. >> this one is to your health. >> didn't cost us anything. >> the other ones, well, i needed those shoes. thanks, kris. happening today, nine suspects tied to a statewide sex trafficking ring are due to be arraigned. prosecutors are saying the arrest two weeks ago and the rescue of nearly 20 women, investigators say some of the trafficking took place in a hotel, but the women were found from gilroy to hayward.

5:38 am
a gay flag. in september, linda hurley and ryan jurgenson approved the policy to allow the u.s. and state flags to fly at the school. yesterday sunol's teacher union announced a vote of no confidence in both of them. it follows a launch of a recall campaign this past saturday. he plans to fight the effort, which he sees as being led by outside activists. hurley has not yet responded to a request for comment. reality is setting in for san francisco residents who hoped the clean and safe streets they enjoyed during the apec summit last week would still be there. the city and state worked to make it look its best. experts say the city pushed the unhoused into the tenderloin, but some are returning to other parts of the city, including this intersection at jones and mccalster.

last week it was filled with barricades. last night our cameras caught 15 to 20 people milling about. experts say it would cost a staggering amount of money for the city to keep the changes in place. >> unless you're going to pay unlimited overtime all the time for everyone or hire 700 more police officers, we aren't going to be able to achieve the type of scene that we got to witness last week because of apec. >> experts say the city would also have to pay for thousands of recovery beds for the fentanyl addicted if it wants to permanently bring back the changes san francisco saw last week. moving you forward this morning, local groups are offering help for those trying to make it in the bay ahead of the holidays. starting at 9:00 this morning in san mateo, the samaritan house is handing out donated groceries to hundreds of people on pacific boulevard. then at 10:00, oakland's human services department is distributing 3,500 meals at various locations across the

high of 72, gilroy in the mid-70s, with saratoga reaching 70 degrees. mike, you're seeing the commute starting to slow down? >> you might say that's typical timing but this week i expected this, perhaps, to have regular timing, lighter volume, and then maybe tomorrow very light as we approach the thanksgiving holiday. we are looking at the backup at the bay bridge. this is not as bad as we often see on a tuesday at 5:40. it is building, more traffic coming in. more slowing on highway 37, just a little bit. more slowing, brake tapping for highway 4. these are your typical spots. again, mostly a light traffic flow. we're watching as it builds. the patterns seem to be near expected routes. this is unexpected, an emergency closure we're hearing about on highway 13. apparently crews have been there for a while but we just got the official notification. it's going to continue probably for another half hour near broadway terrace, this stretch of highway 13. there's a pedestrian bridge

they're repairing so they have to stop the traffic from time to time. 580 is clear. over here, this is cleared of any parking, the lower manzanita because of high tide. that will be in place for the rest of the week. a note if you're planning on using that park and ride. so far driving past the area is fine. the bay is showing a little slowing in san jose. we'll track that to see how big the volume is as well. >> thanks, mike. honoring those whose lives were lost to violence. coming up, a show of support in san francisco to mark transgender day of remembrance and the problems human rights groups agree is leading to an american epidemic. president biden celebrate his birthday, the one that led so many p eo

climate change. but heirloom carbon technologies is making strides to turn that around, opening the first direct air carbon capture facility near the bay area. heirloom is the blueprint for innovative ways to not only reduce carbon but become carbon negative. the company has created a way to capture 1 million kilograms of carbon per year by heating limestone to a powder and that is exposed to the air and looks like a sponge, soaking up harmful carbon. when the carbon is stored deep underground, the limestone is reused. >> limestone is very thirsty for co2 naturally, and we give super powers to limestone to capture carbon a lot faster than it otherwise would. it would take months or years and we got it down to three days, which is incredibly powerful because we can recycle limestone over and over again and capture carbon more cheaply,
5:59 am
so we can have a meaningful and significant impact on climate. >> and heirloom plan to continue to build for facilities across the country and expand tenfold next year. the ultimate goal is to remove 1 billion tons of co2 from the atmosphere by 2035, a figure which represents about 20% of today's annual u.s. emissions, and 10% of global carbon removal needed annually by 2050. for more information, go to our website, nbcbayarea.com/climateincrisis. >> thank you, kari. tomorrow marks 60 years since president john f. kennedy was assassinated. >> one of two secret service agents still living is now speaking out once again. clint hill was riding in the car behind president kennedy and the first lady during the dallas parade on november 22nd, 1963. he's now published a new afterward to his book which
