destinations this week, orlando, florida. 49 million people are driving this thanksgiving, and many of them will get started today. >> got a lot covered for you this morning, including al's forecast and the director of the cdc amid a rise in respiratory illnesses this holiday season. but let's begin with maggie vespa in chicago at o'hare's airport. hey, maggie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah you can see a busy o'hare airport already this morning as far as the weather's impact on travel, it so far appears to be minimal which is good news flight aware showing just a few hundred delays nationwide. fewer than 100 cancellations that said, those numbers could easily go up throughout the day as those severe storms that have been wreaking havoc down south start moving east throughout the day. officials are begging travelers who are driving and who are flying to have a backup plan and allow extra time knowing how easily severe weather can throw a paralyzing wrench into holida travel thanksgiving travel rush ramping

up, mother nature is impacting holiday plans with bad weather nationwide a string of tornadoes hitting the gulf coast overnight in central louisiana, a twister spawning half dollar-sized hail while three people had to be rescued from a home destroyed by severe weather south of jackson, mississippi strong winds and rain pummelled a highway, making that system driving dangerous. that system now heading up the east coast, new york city already issuing a travel warning, expecting wet and windy conditions over the big apple. for many, the timing couldn't be worse as they try to get home for the holiday. >> we got here three hours early. yes were basically asleep waiting on the plane. >> reporter: with the faa expecting 2.6 million people to fly this week. >> demand is growing. >> reporter: secretary of transportation pete buttigieg

telling nbc's tom costello, storms could throw a major wrench into an already stressed system >> we are seeing some weather systems that could play a role and affect some flights. build a little bit of cushion into your plans. >> reporter: the same advice applies on the roads with gas prices down almost 40 cents from a year ago, more than 49 million americans are expected to drive for thanksgiving, including friends catherine and jordan, traveling an hour outside chicago to see family. >> so you are making the drive wednesday night. do you expect the roads to be busy >> i do. especially because i'm going on 55, and typically that traffic is just bad all the time. >> reporter: would you ever chance it and drive on thanksgiving >> honestly, maybe because it might be less busy? >> yeah. >> reporter: aaa says she may be correct. actually peak travel days are today and tomorrow with sunday slated to be the busiest of all. and that being said, officials obviously have tips for those traveling in severe weather. if you are flying, they say check with your airline. it has what they call a weather waiver, allowing you to knave navigate and maybe move your flight around the storm. if you are driving, try to time

your route around the storm. possibly have an alternate route. for both they say also check other means of transportation, including busses and trains to have a plan b in case your plan a falls through. hoda >> maggie vespa for us there in chicago. maggie, thank you. >> al is keeping a close watch on all this. what do you got? >> good morning, guys. hoda, for you, new orleans, take a look this system has moved through there but they have a lot of fog. that's crescent city bridge right there. so let's show you where that system is right now moving in. you can see snow back behind chicago. icy mix. heavy showers and thunderstorms stretching all the way down to mobile, alabama, panhandle of florida. as we move down there, we have a risk of severe storms, tornadoes likely montgomery to albany mobile, alabama with the possibility of some severe weather. today heavy rain and wind moving toward the east coast with snow, interior sections of the northeast, icy conditions as airport delays in new york, philly

really impacted d.c., raleigh down to atlanta, chicago and detroit. big hubs if you're going to be driving, i-80, i-40 all going to be mess is the system gets out of here by this afternoon and evening but gusty winds behind it that wind will impact new york and boston some slight delays stretching down to charleston on the roads, it's going to be wet from albany down to philadelphia, washington, d.c. rain fall amounts could be a problem. upwards of two inches or more from charlotte to new york icy conditions look at this, appalachian, all the way into central pennsylvania, up state new york. we have a tenth of an inch to 100th inch of ice and that could be very dangerous and heavy snow as you get up into new england along i-95, some places in maine could see upwards of 10 -- 8 to 10 inches of snow but also snow interior sections of new england as well, guys. so a real mess and then a little later we'll take a look at the weekend for people trying to get home.

>> okay. all right, al. lots on your plate thank you. we'll get the full forecast in a moment. yes. meantime as millions get ready to gather for the holiday, health officials are urging people to take extra precautions because the cdc estimates there have already been up to 1.6 million flu cases. rsv infections are also on the rise, especially impacting kids under the age of 4. covid-19 still a concern. for a lot of families. but only about 15% of adults have received that updated shot. let's see what it all means, how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones. so happy that you are here with us today. as we said, tons of people are on the road, people are going to be gathering, not many people have gotten the flu shot or the covid shot. how concerned are you about these holiday gatherings? >> well, look, we love to gather around the holidays. it is wonderful to be with both of you, so fun. but we need to protect each other. and, yes, too few people have

gotten the vaccine so far. i know folks are over covid and they want to leave it in the rearview mirror, but it's here with us. the three reasons to get vaccinated. one, the virus changed. so you want the most updated protection you can get. if you had covid before or you have been vaccinated, that protection has decreased over time. so you want the boosted up protection. third, people are still getting long covid, the long symptoms from that virus, even if you get a mild case. all three reasons, we don't want to be sick and we don't want to be sick for a long time. getting vaccinated is the most important way to protect yourself and your family. >> it was hard to get the covid vaccine in the early going, this more updated one. do you feel like all those wrinkles have been ironed out? it's pretty accessible now? >> yes. moving out of the emergency, the federal government wasn't purchasing and distributing. the private sector was doing it. they did have some hiccups right at the beginning. but that's all really been ironed out. plenty of supply of vaccine for covid and flu. get your appointment now. it is never too late to get vaccinated. i know folks are saying, it's already the middle of the

season. no. it's actually just starting right now, so plenty of time to get vaccinated. >> the number of people that have had the flu seems pretty high. do you think that's because we've been isolated for so much. i think people have had these long coughs for months. it's been going on and on. >> there are a lot of bugs circulating, viruses and bacteria. but we have ways to protect ourself. vaccine is one. also, if you get sick over this holiday season, make sure you are getting tested because testing allows you to know what you have so you can get treatment. we have treatment for flu and for covid, and that treatment could save your life. you can get four free tests, covid tests. at covidtests.gov. yesterday we said you can get four free new ones. take them with you if you travel so you know if you are getting sick. >> dr. cohen, you're the new sheriff in town, new head of the cdc. i don't have to tell you there have been some questions about trust in the agency in the wake of the pandemic. public surveys will show you the cdc is held in, not low regard, but the trust is not there as it used to be. what are you doing to turn it

around? >> yeah. so i'm about six months into the job. we're focussed on transparency. i think that's important to build trust. communicating faster, more simply, making sure we're focused on giving folks simple ways to protect themselves, certainly building relationships. and i personally have been traveling all around the country so that folks can hear from me directly. so i'm not just the cdc director, i'm a mom. i have two daughters that are 9 and 11. i want them to know what i did for my own daughters and i got both of them the updated covid vaccine and the flu shot because i wanted them to be protected. same with myself. i got myself vaccinated. my parents. i wouldn't recommend something to the american people i wouldn't do for my own family. i want them to hear from me directly. i've been all over the country sharing that message. >> we thank you the best of luck. we move to the possible breakthrough the middle east. israel and hamas nearing an agreement that would include the release of some of the hostages taken by hamas in the terror

attack last month. nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons is in tel aviv with the latest on this developing story. keir, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. senior u.s. official and a source familiar with the talks in the region tell nbc news this morning that a tentative deal has been reached to release those hamas-held hostages and that it could come -- could be announced as early as today. benjamin netanyahu, the israeli saying today i hope there will be good news soon. the qataris who mediated those talks say negotiations have reached a critical and final stage. this morning a breakthrough in the hostage negotiations is closer than it's ever been. u.s. officials say. >> mr. president, is a hostage deal near? >> i believe so. but i'm not prepared to talk. >> you believe so? >> yes. >> thank you. ♪♪ >> reporter: multiple news reports quoting hamas and

israeli officials this morning outlining a possible deal. a multi-day cease fire with at least 50 israeli and international hostages freed in waves. with more to follow. and palestinianing detained in israel, women and children, released in exchange. after a late-night meeting with israel's prime minister and war cabinet, the families of hostages emerging frustrated without news. >> there was no new information given. they can't give any new information because this is, you know, it might jeopardize any effort that they're doing. >> reporter: this morning, hamas saying it's close to reaching a truce agreement. but israel not commenting. inside gaza, children evacuated to a hospital in the south overnight from a hospital in the north surrounded by fighting and israeli tanks. large numbers of patients and doctors remain trapped amid a still-rising death toll in gaza. we met this gentleman working in israel on october 7th and is unable to get back to gaza.

ten days ago, he lost contact with his wife and three daughters. 3-year-old, 7-year-old and 8-year-old. he's terrified they won't survive. two of my daughters witnessed two wars. this is the second war while they're still children, he cries. the white house urging israeli caution in gaza, but again echoing support for israeli's government. when asked about protesters using the term genocide. >> israel is trying to defend itself against a genocidal terrorist threat. so when we're going -- if we're going to start using that word, fine, let's use it appropriately. >> reporter: and back to the hostage talks, savannah. in three-hours time we expect a meeting of the israeli government, a vote and then an announcement. an announcement over release of hostages over thanksgiving, that would be a happy moment, savannah.

>> it would, indeed. keir, keep us posted. 15 minutes past the hour. craig is here talking about a shooting at a walmart. >> good morning. you as well. that gunfire erupted inside a walmart store in beavercreek, ohio and it happened just as we're about to enter the busy holiday shopping season. nbc stephanie gosk is here with some breaking details on that shooting, steph. good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. what should have been a quiet, typical night at the store ended in tragedy for shoppers in ohio. police say four victims were injured in this attack before the gunman took his own life >> reporter: this morning, just days before the thanksgiving holiday, terrifying moments for shoppers at a walmart in a suburban ohio neighborhood where police say a gunman opened fire monday, injuring four people before turning the gun on himself. one shopper speaking from the parking lot. >> i was literally just shopping for thanksgiving stuff

and this guy walked right past me with an assault rifle and started shooting >> reporter: authorities say a male shooter entered the walmart in beavercreek, ohio, and began firing. >> appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wounds. there were no rounds or return fire -- fired by officers. >> reporter: police say they do not know if the shooting was targeted or random >> we have no motive yet, no information on what he may have been thinking. >> reporter: nearby college students witnessed the scene >> i come here all the time. >> we live at wright state university, five minutes from here and we saw a bunch of cop cars happened to us if we decided to go to our campus instead of here it's really scary. >> reporter: shoppers inside the store ahead of the thanksgiving rush, reliving the terror. >> if you guys nobody who is at beavercreek walmart right now, call and check on your people. i'm so lucky to be alive right now. he literally walked right past me >> police have yet to release any updates on the victim's conditions but confirm they were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

walmart also released a statement saying they are heartbroken by what's happened >> stephanie, thank you. >> you're welcome. u.s. navy plane overshot a runway at a military base in hawaii yesterday it wound up in the ocean it happened off the east coast of a wau hue all nine people on the plane safely evacuated nobody was hurt there. the crew was conducting routine training at the time of the incident investigators are still trying to figure out how that plane ended up in the water. all right. another check of al who has the national forecast. >> we do it's the eastern third of the country where we got all the problems heavy rain, snow, severe storms down in the gulf, but you get to the west, and things looking good plenty of sunshine in the mid plains all the way up into the upper great lakes. mild conditions in the rockies it is going to be a little breezy in southern california, santa ana winds kicking up but for the most part looking pretty nice out there. we're going to get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

are due to be arraigned in a south bay courtroom. >> prosecutors announced the arrest two weeks ago and the rescue of nearly 20 women. investigators say some of the trafficking took place in a hotel in alameda, and women were found from gilroy to hayward. authorities are calling it one of the largest sex ring busts in state history. six men and three women are facing dozens of criminal charges with more suspects and victims still believed to be at large. one person is in the hospital after a fire destroys a home, firefighters say was packed to the brim on the peninsula. it started a little after 11:00 p.m. on meadow lane near middlefield road in redwood city. firefighters describing the home as being in hoarder-like conditions. we don't know the condition of the person hospitalized. it is believed that there were others in the home who made it out safely. firefighters say the fire may have started as an issue with the water heater. let's get a look at our

forecast for this tuesday morning with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're starting out with sunshine, chilly temperatures around the bay area, we'll reach into the low 70s, and it's going to be partly cloudy into the afternoon, and then overnight our temperatures dip down to the low 40s. now, we are going to have more clouds increasing tomorrow, and even a slight chance of rain in parts of the north bay. very slight chance of rain early thanksgiving morning, but then we go back to sunshine and our temperatures reach into the upper 60s. look at those morning temperatures dipping into the mid-30s. expect that into early next week, while san francisco will see highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s. we have the full forecast on our website, nbcbayarea.com.

author laura vitale. and if you want to cook this recipe with us, it's easy. we have a qr code right there. just scan that sucker. it will get you all the ingredients you need chef, great to see you happy thanksgiving week. i'll be honest i'm not excited as the turkey. as a protein at thanksgiving i'm more of a red meat or ham guy. but i love this application. walk us through it >> i'm not a huge turkey person myself i think it is necessary on the thanksgiving table i think we can improve on that one of the things i love about this recipe is you can actually use cooked leftover thanksgiving turkey to make it. >> right. >> if you have got leftovers, this is great. >> this is the ideal friday brunch situation. >> yeah. it is so easy. i like to start by poaching bone-in, skin on turkey thighs and turkey braess. i feel like it will get moist, delicious and flavorful. so you will put that into a large pot, fill it with water. and then to it, you will go ahead and add all of these aromatics. half of an onion parsley, celery.

and the most important thing is salt you want to add a good amount of salt because if you don't add enough salt, it is not going to taste like anything. >> got you. >> bring that to a boil. it doesn't it doesn't it just really brings out all the flavors. once that comes down to the boil, reduce it down and let it simmer for 30 minutes. while that happens, go ahead and slice up a bunch of leaks. i love leaks i feel like they're in the onion family but meyer mild they're lovely they don't compete they don't overpower and you can use a lot of them. the only drawback is they're very sandy and dirty, so make sure you wash them well. thinly slice them. >> is that why you are soaking them to wash them out >> yes throw them in a bowl of cold water and just kind of go like this to loosen up that sand and rubble. >> what is that? >> it is the way it grows. it grows under the earth and like every single leak -- >> go to the beach. >> they got little chairs. that's great >> i thought that was my jessica simpson moment how does the sand get in there

>> i love it. >> you know how vegetables work? >> not really, actually. i would have had them in the celery family long before the onion family, too. sorry, chef. >> saute it until they caramelize once you do that, you will just add a little bit of flour. let that cook out a little tiny bit. you add a little bit of wine and then once you have pretty much your liquids in, which is going to be your wine, a little bit of dairy could be milk, could be cream. and then i use the stock from the turkey, right? >> yes, you do. >> you use that up, add that flavor in. then add carrots i like to add cooked bacon because it gives you richness, a little parsley and shredded cooked turkey. a little bit of garlic and herb seasoning. that will cook down until it reduces. in the meantime, take some puff pastry, roll that out a little bit. >> this is your leftovers.

think about friday morning and in the tupperware in the fridge. all the turkey you break it apart and make this pot pie. >> it's easy i like to lay it out so it is a bit thinner. i like to use a pot that can go right in the oven so i don't have to dirty anything extra place that on top. >> you can just buy that pastry, right? >> yeah. i'm not making puff pastry as much as i love my family and all my people, not enough to make puff pastry because it is very time consuming. brush it with egg wash so it becomes brown and beautiful. i like to put fresh thyme, black pepper in a 375 oven or 20 minutes or until it looks something like this. >> it looks gorgeous how does it taste, guys? >> we love a pot pie i love a pot pie, too. i don't love turkey, but now i love turkey vis-a-vis pot pie. >> vis-a-vis. >> i always welcome extra people at my table. i'm always hosting we will have 20 people
