we're right now mostly in the 40s across the bay area, with san francisco at 50 degrees. taking a look at some of our south bay temperatures, in the low 60s again today. not much warmer than yesterday, with mountain view hitting a high of 61. we'll see a high of 61 in morgan hill and in los gatos. wiel have more in a few minutes. mike, it's not just a regular friday commute. >> it's a december friday, basically the last month of the year we know traffic drops off for volume. we're not seeing any backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights have been on for about a half hour. we have blips, brake taps or easing off of the accelerator across the span. highway 37, highway 4 holding steady with mild slowing. clears cleared by the walnut

creek interchange, the dublin interchange and a mild build for 101 north. >> thank you very much. we begin with breaking news, the cease-fire in the middle east is over. this is a live look at the israel/gaza border. gaza health leaders say at least 32 people were killed within three hours of the temporary truce ending. the israeli military is now warning for civilians to evacuate parts of southern gaza as the new offensive gets under way. before drawing to a close, the week long cease-fire saw the release of more than 100 hostages. 240 palestinians held in israeli jails were also set free. we've had live team coverage on the developing situation. >> that's right, we are covering the war from every angle, including the impacts here on bay area families. at this hour talks are ongoing to renew that temporary cease-fire. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in washington, d.c. what do we know about the end of this truce that so many people

were really banking on? >> reporter: good morning, kris. what we do know is that talks were ongoing to try to renew the pause in fighting, but israel resumed combat operations in gaza, despite the international push for the cease-fire to be extended for as long as possible. loud explosions coming from the gaza strip this morning. israel's military launching air strikes after accusing hamas of firing at israeli territory, a move they say violated the terms of a seven-day cease-fire. during that time, hamas freed hostages in exchange for the release of palestinian prisoners and aid flowed into gaza. >> we all recognize more needs to be done, more needs to get in, but we shouldn't discount the incredible work that has been done on the ground to get more food, water, medicine, and

even fuel to the people of gaza over the last week. >> reporter: secretary of state blinken remains in the middle east, but is now in dubai. on thursday, he met separately with the president of the palestinian authority and israeli leaders, with hopes of extending the pause in fighting, but stressed that israel must take active steps to minimize casualties when fighting began. >> the massive loss of civilian life and displacement of the scale we saw in northern gaza not be repeated in the south. as i told the prime minister, intent matters, but so does the result. >> reporter: the government of israel says it's committed to securing the release of hostages and eliminating hamas. >> we refuse to live any longer next to this terror enclave in constant fear of terrorists crossing the border and butchering our people and children. >> reporter: combat operations resuming in israel, further complicating efforts to free those still held in captivity.

>> and the united nations secretary-general said today that he deeply regrets israel resuming its military operations after the seven-day pause and hoped for a renewed truce in gaza. >> i know so many people will be waiting and watching. thank you very much, brie. among the freed hostages, an israeli woman with bay area ties. her husband is still among those held captive, but her bay area family is elated after fighting tirelessly for her release. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. i understand it was quite an emotional reunion. >> reporter: that's right, laura. the sister-in-law of ramon tells me that the moments of seeing, hugging and being reunited with her sister-in-law were simply incredible, but she says the work is not over until all of the hostages are back with their families, including ramon's

husband, who remains in hamas captivity. >> she's always speaking about her husband, saying, yes, but my husband is there, and i told her like we fought for you, we're going to fight for your husband, we're going to fight for all of the other hostages that are still in captivity. we're going to bring them all back. she was crying. they're a very peaceful people who have basically dedicated their lives to caring for others. they adopt rescued dogs and cats and that's their passion. they call them my children. >> reporter: now, laura, you know, yael goes on to share that it's been very emotional for their family. she didn't go into much detail about the conditions that her sister-in-law endured while she was in captivity, but she did paint some powerful images that

to mark the 34th annual world aids day, santa clara county will pay tribute to more than 36 million people who have died from the disease. health leaders estimate close to 4,000 people live with hiv countywide. hispanics and latinos account for six in ten new cases, despite representing just 25% of the county population. another important group needing help, the elderly. that's because people with hiv now living longer and have a relatively normal life expectancy, thanks to medicines developed in recent years. health leaders say as a result, more than half of those living in the county with hiv are over the age of 50. >> so, of course, with aging, you start having other health issues, so ensuring that they get treatment, not just for hiv, but other things like diabetes or any other illnesses they may have. and then in terms of nonmedical needs, there's a lot of social support needs that aging populations have, so we do aim

to connect them with peer support groups, other social services like transportation services are also needed. so i think it's ensuring that there is this holistic care for both medical and nonmedical needs is important for this aging population. >> some of today's events in the south bay include a viewing of the aids memorial quilt at the billy defrank lgbtq+ community center, plus a county and city flag raising and a candlelight vigil tonight at 6:00. all scheduled events on posted on the county health department website. first day of december, as we take a live look outside in san francisco. a lot of holiday lights are going up. even personally people are putting them on their houses over the weekend. kari, is the weather going to cooperate to get out and decorate? >> absolutely. i think it's going to be a really nice weekend. we're just watching out for a few spotty showers here and there. in spots like walnut creek it is pretty much dry throughout the weekend with a mix of sun and

clouds. temperatures going from mid-40s at 8:00 to 59 at noon, and seeing some low 60s. we're watching some rain farther to the north, but as it moves closer to the bay area, it continues to weaken, and mainly the north bay getting a chance of some showers. it looks like it's north of santa rosa, and throughout the weekend we could see a couple of sprinkles here and there. but definitely not a washout for the weekend. mike has a look at what kind of gas prices you can expect as you head out this morning. >> a change in the lead. we have lowering since yesterday morning, hayward's valero on hesperian now reporting at $3.93. the low for santa clara, $4.03 at diamond gas and mart. san jose still has spots below 4 bucks. heading north to solano county, $4.27 is the best we can do at vallejo, grand on springs road.

nicely. taillights, a couple of brake taps. there may be crews clearing as you approach marsh and willow. we'll show you the bigger view coming up. good morning. very happy friday to you. some breaking business news this morning. the "wall street journal" is reporting that apple is in talks with paramount to combine streaming services. streaming companies have been worried about customers bailing out on their channels because of high costs. we wrapped up november with more wins, that's a big one. big rally on the stock market continues. the dow hit its highest point of the year briefly yesterday. it's the first friday of the month. normally that would be jobs friday, but that's kind of more of a rule of thumb. the calendar math is complicated, but today is the 1st, and so the jobs are going to come next friday. united auto workers just launched a drive to unionize employees at tesla, honda, other nonunion shops. they started with this video

reminding everyone the uaw won huge raises for workers of the big three. >> big three auto workers, ford, general motors and stellantis just won big raises, job security and cost of living adjustments for one simple reason, they're organized. >> part of the challenge for the uaw, a lot of the nonunion shops, factories like bmw are located in the south, which have state laws making organized labor much more difficult. then again, those workers are paid a lot less down in the south, so that's in the union's favor. we've been talking over the past year about the trouble with cryptocurrency, ftx, binance. a group of investors are suing cristiano ronaldo who advertised his own efts. the lawsuit says ronaldo did not follow u.s. security laws when promoting the tokens, and they're suing for a billion

dollars. a federal judge has suspended montana's new law banning tiktok before it took effect. the judge ruling montana's ban would likely violate the first amendment and that the state probably doesn't have authority anyway. the power to ban an app is something congress should do, said the judge. this week on our sunday morning program press heir, we're going to look at how artificial intelligence is affecting companies like just answer, which connect consumers with experts. people have questions like, why does my dishwasher make that sound? you can just ask chatgpt. >> ai is an incredible tool and it is going to replace certain parts of the world and even of our business, but humans are really an important part of the equation as well. by blending humans and ai, consumers can get the best of both worlds. >> i'm sure you noticed the ukrainian flag behind andy. just answer is a san francisco based company, but has offices

>> kid might not be familiar with norad as we are, but for the 68th straight year the north american aerospace defense command center is getting ready and it's going to launch the santa claus tracking website. the agency has an app so little kiddos around the world can stay locked in on the big guy. the tracking equipment kicks into high gear on december 24th, christmas eve, when we track santa as he gets close to our neighborhood. >> look, there he is! a live look in san francisco this morning. >> i've been good! >> caltrain's holiday train is back. santa and his elves will be taking a ride this weekend. the train decorated with more than 75,000 glittering lights. it will visit nine caltrain stations between san francisco and santa clara on saturday and sunday night, providing holiday entertainment. they're also collecting donations of toys for local children in need. salvation army says this is the event that brings so much cheer

to families up and down the peninsula. >> the polar express meets concert, meets a toy drive. it's just a really fun event. what's awesome is every stop, when the toys are dropped off, they're going to go to kid in those communities and those areas. it's really a community event. >> a great way to do it. the train starts tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in san francisco and it will eventually end in santa clara. then on sunday, it will start in san francisco and end at 4:00 in menlo park. >> the salvation army really does such nice things all year long, but especially at the holidays. >> it's true. i think these events really bring the community together and get us all in that giving spirit. >> and it's so beautiful. >> and it was snowing. >> did you catch that on the radar? >> yes, we also track santa, too. we're going to have a little more fake snow blowing this weekend. >> that was fake?

[ laughter ] >> you know, the real stuff. >> california snow. >> a little bit of some drizzle flying through the air possible this weekend as well. we take a look at our forecast for the holiday train on saturday and sunday, you may encounter a little bit of spotty, light showers, but definitely not enough to ruin any outdoor plans. it's another cold start. take a look at where we are in napa, it is 38 degrees, also 38 in santa rosa, 39 in dublin. we're in the low 40s in san jose and across much of the rest of the south bay. and our east bay temperatures reach up to about 60, 61, up to 62 today in antioch and concord. and it is going to be partly cloudy as we see the rain to our north, as a weakening storm system comes our way. what do we typically measure on this first day of meteorological winter? well, throughout the entire month san rafael usually gets over 7 inches of rainfall. oakland gets over 4 1/2 inches of rain, and we usually see

nearly 3 inches of rainfall for livermore, gilroy, a little bit more than that, and a little less for san jose, that typically sees about 2 1/4 inches. we are getting into our second wettest month of the year. january is usually our wettest month on averages with we go through your rainy season. the storm systems we've had recently have been weakening before they get here and only a few of us have been getting in on wet weather, seeing spotty showers, with the best chance in the north bay as we go into the day tomorrow and looking ahead, it looks like the north bay will be the target of seeing some off and on light showers, while the rest of the bay area stays mostly dry. only about a quarter inch of rain or less in the forecast for the next several days, while all of the heavy rain remains just to the north of us, at least through this seven-day forecast. so mild temperatures for the afternoons, cool mornings ahead, and every now and then a sprinkle or two through the weekend. mike, you're checking on the

start to see a little more rain, although it's been fairly dry across the bay area, with the exception of some quick-moving light showers here and there. our high temperatures for this afternoon head for the low 60s, and we'll be watching out for spotty rain for the weekend, with the north bay the focus of seeing some of the best rain chances. it will be a calm and mild start early next week, and we'll also see temperatures remaining fairly mild. here is a look at what to expect today, with highs in the low 60s, and we'll talk about the weekend and some events as you're making plans coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good, kari. a live look this morning from the israel border with gaza, looking toward gaza. that's where combat resumed overnight, following the end of the temporary cease-fire. >> we have new video to show you, columns of smoke rising into the sky over gaza, all while you were sleeping. israeli forces launching air strikes overnight, accusing hamas of violating the truce.

the seven-day pause in fighting saw the release of more than 100 hostages held in gaza, and 240 palestinians held in israeli jails. talks to renew the temporary truce are ongoing. among the hostages being released, an israeli woman, who has family here in the bay area. those family members fought tirelessly for her release and continue to wait for the release of her husband. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us live. ginger, you talked with her family members overnight. can you tell us what they're saying about the moments that family was reunited? >> reporter: well, kris, laura, i spoke with yael, the sister-in-law of ramon, who lives in berkeley with her husband. she tells me as soon as they learned that ramon was on the list of hostages to be released on tuesday, they immediately left for israel, where they were reunited with ramon shortly after her release. she says the reunion was simply

overwhelming, emotions were overwhelming for ramon's parents, her siblings, and even her dog, tova. ramon and tova have been inseparable since. this is one of the first pictures her family have shared with us since her release. the reunion is not complete, as they await the safe return of ramon's husband who is still in captivity under hamas after both were kidnapped and taken hostage on october 7th. >> the return of ramon is helping us to take a deep breath, but the fight is not over because we will only win when all of the hostages are back. >> reporter: this is just the first step on a long road of healing and recovery. now, yael tells me they are careful and intentional about the information that they are sharing at this point. the focus now is to look forward. >> so literally as she was

walking to hug her family, her sister, within the first five minutes of seeing her, handed her her glasses. ramon puts on the glasses and says, oh, i can see! for two months i was unable to see. and, you know, it's this moment of seeing your family and literally being able to see your family, because she was not able to see. >> ginger, did she talk about the conditions that her sister-in-law actually endured during those 53 days in captivity? >> reporter: laura, she did not go into detail about that, but she did say we can paint our own pictures, we can draw our own conclusions from the state of released hostages. >> we discovered an 85-year-old grandmother has lost 40 pounds in the course of two weeks. when my sister-in-law was

released, we know she was not able to see. so i'm not able to disclose any private information, but out of the information we are hearing from all of the hostages, you can start to paint a picture and you start to imagine there are going to be a lot of physical health and mental health issues that the hostages are going to have to deal with, some of them more acute and immediate, and some are obviously going to be longer term. >> reporter: and, laura, kris, you can really see how deeply personal this experience has been. yael says the most important message this morning as the fighting resumes, for her to get out to the international community, is to bring all the hostages back immediately. >> thank you so much, ginger. hard to hear, but also so necessary to hear. our coverage continues online at nbcbayarea.com. you can head there for the very latest updates. and you can get our free app to

track breaking news sent right to your phone. we have new developments this morning in the deadly shooting at an east bay house party in october. authorities have made an arrest. late last night oakley police announced the arrest of an 18-year-old, sean karp, in brentwood. they expect him to be charged for the shooting. they say information obtained from an earlier arrest led investigators to the shooting suspect. it happened october 21st outside of a crowded house party. a 16-year-old student from brentwood's liberty high school died, three other minors were injured. it is 6:36 right now. governor gavin newsom taking his message to american voters during an unusual debate with florida governor ron desantis, and let's just say, in case you missed it, neither held back. >> there are profound differences tonight, and i look forward to engaging, but there's one thing in closing that we have in common, is neither of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024. >> fox news aired last night's

debate, which was billed as a blue state/red state dialogue, and for the two men it represented a chance at some sort of an opening. for newsom, it could set the groundwork for a possible presidential run in 2028. for desantis, it was another chance to try to make up some of the ground he's lost in the race for the gop nomination next fall. >> he thinks biden and harris have done a great job, he thinks the economy is working because of their policies for americans, and they are not. so what california represents is the biden/harris agenda on steroids. >> how that debate, as you might imagine, often grew heated, and it frequently included the two talking over each other. let's take a breath of fresh air and get outside this morning. this is the sierra. >> oh, nice. >> right? chains required. we've got good news for skiers, it's been snowing. but the conditions, as i mentioned, they can cause some

headaches for drivers trying to head up. chain controls in effect for both directions of i-80 and highway 50. if you're heading up to the sierra, pack the chains. what's it looking like here? we are going to see for the weekend, if you are making plans to head to tahoe, we've seen a mix of rain and snow. when the temperatures drop in the overnight hours, it just makes it freeze. there will be some light snow. it's been snowing, but not enough for skiers, really. they're having to make a lot of the snow, because what we've seen and what we have ahead is less than an inch of snow. so we do need a lot more. if you're going to be keeping it closer to home for your weekend forecast, maybe you want to check out merry healdsburg, the tree lighting festival this evening, it starts at 4:00. we'll be at 58 degrees. a nice, cool evening, partly cloudy. we're also going to continue with that kind of weather into the weekend. if you're in oakland going to

glowfari, the lantern festival starts at 5:00. it will be 56 degrees, so definitely need the layers and maybe a santa hat, too. if you're going ice-skating in san ramon at the holiday ice rink, we have some really nice, but cool temperatures, as we go into the evening. i think that makes it feel perfect for ice-skating. and we also will have the gilroy holiday festival and parade that starts tomorrow at 3:00. when you have highs in the low 60s, it will cool down quickly for the evening. mike, you're predicting some changes in the commute. >> i was predicting a lighter volume overall. i did not predict the disabled vehicle that had sunol jammed up for just a few minutes. we have a lighter traffic flow, so there will be a chance for it to recover. it's recovering right now, pleasanton toward highway 84. there is a build for the nimitz and 101 in san jose, but these are typical spots, lighter than typical traffic. this is for the weekend, note you'll have delays for the b.a.r.t. system because they're not having track service between

happy friday to you. the time is 6:43. we're taking a live look outside in san jose at christmas in the park. if you're going to enjoy around downtown san jose today, it's going to start out with mid-40s, but then we're headed for the low 60s this afternoon. another nice and cool day, but we have more of this in our weekend forecast. we'll talk about where we could see some rain coming up. and we thought we could see some backup before this, but now it's showing up. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on since 5:30. at 6:44, we're seeing the visible backup build. the white house and most democratic leaders with staying out of the debate about whether

to kick george santos out of the house. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. that vote will come today. >> could come early this morning, in fact, about 7:30 our time. it will most likely be successful, and you're absolutely right, the white house staying out of it. it's not their branch of government. really no upside in taking an opinion on a controversial subject. democratic leadership following the lead. the top democrat in the house, hakeem jeffries, just telling members, do what you think is right. >> we have no official whip recommendation. we recognize that this is an issue of conscience. >> now, this is not the first time the house has voted whether or not to kick representative george santos out. but this vote comes after the house ethics committee report accused santos of stealing money from his own political donors and his own campaign to fund a lavish lifestyle. santos, who also faces very serious federal criminal charges, seemed resigned that come this afternoon he will no longer be a u.s. congressman.

from montana when they were 2 months old and only weighing about a pound. these girls are about 30 pounds now. cougars are found pretty widely around, and also these guys are the second largest cats in north america. >> so we're okay with them in the cage this morning at 5 months old. at what age would we not be standing in here with them? >> even now we still have to be mindful. even though they're still young, we have having the inate hunting behavior, so we can't have our backs to them. with these kids, we've basically hand raised them, so there's a good relationship. so basically it depends on them and how they grow. >> i know you guys can't see this on camera, there's quite a few people behind the camera making sure that -- they are wild animals, that they behave. there they are unwrapping their present. there's a misconception, you look at them right now and they look so playful.

when they get older, they're not that playful anymore. >> they'll always probably still play with each other. >> but not with people. >> at about 3 years old, they will be around 100 pounds and standing on their hind legs, they'll be 5 feet tall. they have raiser sharp claws. yes, cougars can jump very well, from a sitting position, about 18 feet straight in the air. >> reporter: this is why you don't run from them. >> this is why you don't run from them. their natural instinct is to sneak up behind the prey item and chase them and come from the back and bite behind the neck. we never want to have our backs turned to them. you want eye contact, make yourself big and make a lot of noise. >> as we were saying earlier, second slowest wins. you can come see them here at six flags discovery kingdom,

degrees in dublin and 50 in san franciscoment. our east bay temperatures head for the 60s. it will be mostly sunny throughout the afternoon. tonight, you've probably seen this on social media, this shows where you can see the northern lights, the aurora borealis, and canada is going to have an amazing view, as well as alaska. the line goes down to some of our northern states, maybe around seattle, but, unfortunately, they've had an atmospheric river moving through, so most likely not the best viewing with all the clouds in the way. we are going to be watching some of those light showers make it into parts of the north bay, where we see the best chance of seeing showers later this evening. once again, we have the tree lighting in healdsburg. the chance of rain continues throughout the weekend with spotty light showers. this is not enough rain to

we have a live look at the israel/gaza border. gaza health leaders say at least 32 people died within three hours of the ending of that week-long temporary truce. the israeli military is now warning civilians to evacuate parts of southern gaza as a new offensive gets under way. we have new video from overnight showing smoke rising into the sky over gaza. israeli forces launching new air strikes after claiming hamas was the first to end the cease-fire. the seven-day pause in fighting saw the release of more than 100 hostages held in gaza and 240 palestinians held in israeli jails. among the hostages released, an israeli woman with family here in the bay area. ramon and her relatives fought tirelessly for her release. we spoke to her sister-in-law, who says the focus is now on the release of her husband who is still being held captive.
