they are seventh. the 49ers play at home against the green bay packers. but the goal isn't to stay at number two and play the green bay packers. the goal, which is realistic, is to get number one, that guarantees you home field if you keep winning. >> and claiming the number one seed for the 49ers is attainable. you look at four of the next five games, they're winnable games. they have a christmas match-up with the baltimore ravens. it will be a difficult game. you look at the final five games for the philadelphia eagles, they have the dallas cowboys next sunday night, a big one, and the next seattle seahawks. three of five final games are favorable for them to win. if the 49ers win out, hold a tiebreaker over detroit, philadelphia and dallas. the number one spot is attainable. >> the number one spot is the only one with a bye. >> a week of rest and recuperation. you get to study for the teams.

"sports sunday" is presented by xfinity. the 49ers, 9-3-0. a pretty commanding lead over the rams and the seahawks. of course, the arizona cardinals are struggling. they will play the seahawks. they will play the cardinals. speaking of the seahawks, they played them on thanksgiving. that was domination by the 49ers. 31-13. there was no seattle meal, eating at levi's stadium. the seahawks lost already this week to the cowboys. they are 6-6. 49ers, good chance of getting the sweep last year. they beat them three times. >> excellent chance of getting the sweep. you talk about divisional foes, the 49ers understand their dna and what it takes to beat the seattle seahawks. they overwhelm them with a wave of defenders at the line of scrimmage. getting after geno smith. they run the ball down their

rages on. some of the tensions remain visible in the bay area. a starbucks on the peninsula, targeted by vandals. this store was covered in graffiti. this is right off of 101, near the hiller aviation museum. the messages read "blood on your hands" and "free palestine." one with an obscene gesture. not sure when the graffiti was painted. but the pictures were taken when the store was closed. >> a couple hours later, the store was open and the graffiti was gone. criticism started after the company sued the starbucks union over social media posts that said solidarity with palestinian. we reached out to starbucks but have not heard back. we're learning that one of the three men shot in a possible anti-palestinian hate crime in vermont was born in san francisco. this is according to "the san

francisco chronicle." the man was visiting family in burlington last month when he and two friends were shot. all three survived. we learned the 20-year-old brown university student was paralyzed from the waist-down. he met his diagnosis with courage, resilience and humor. they created a gofundme. that has raised $760,000. demonstrators and cease-fire calls coming from people in san francisco. you can see there's dozens of protesters gathered this morning in front of speaker nancy pelosi's home. organizers with code pink, women for peace, say they hope pelosi will hear their demands to stop the fighting now. >> she's a mother. she's a grandmother. many of us are mothers here. i can barely sleep with what i'm going on there. and we're funding it -- that's

acquisition, you won't see hawaii airlines planes painted over with a new name. the brand is going to remain the same. this deal is expected to close anywhere between 12 to 18 months. you can expect that it's going to mean that it will give customers expanded domestic and international choices. >> our combined entity will have $13 billion in annual rev, 365 aircraft, 1,400 flights a day, and serve 138 destinations, including 28 international and over 1,200 destinations globally, through our one-world alliance. >> reporter: the ceo of alaska airlines says the merger will shape honolulu into alaska airlines' second largest hub. that means bay area travelers will have better access to asia with one-stop service through hawaii. the new combined company will be

based in seattle. that's where alaska airlines is currently headquartered. first, the merger must be approved by regulators. that should take 12 to 18 months. but the ceo of alaska airlines today, told us he is confident this merger will go through. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. in a matter of hours, faculty at university of california campuses are kicking off a rolling strike. lecturers and teachers are going to walk off the job. faculty is expected to strike on tuesday. the issue, higher pay. melissa gourd brid brings us th latest from san francisco state. >> reporter: at san francisco state, students are busy studying for finals. but something else is top of mind. signs encourage students to join

faculty on the picket line. one student we spoke with says he plans to day home as all of his classes are canceled. >> i heard plans for a strike from all of my professors. most if not all of the classes will be shut down on campus. >> reporter: this is part of a rolling strike that will happen the next four days at several cal state university campuses across the state. the california faculty association, that represents professors and lecturers, says it's asking for salary increases, and says what cfu leaders have offered so far is inadequate. san francisco state said, quote, s.f. state respects our employees and their labor rights. all labor negotiations are handled centrally at the csu chancellor's office. the union says more than 500 faculty, including some from other campuses are scheduled to picket at sfsu. well, a little saigon

business in oakland just closed its doors for good today, after eight years, citing the deteriorating environment as the biggest reason. a bubble tea and casual asian food restaurant in oakland, served its final customers today. the owner said conditions outside of his store have created challenges that are unable to overcome. across the street is clinton park where many unhoused have taken over. he says on top of that, the break-ins, trash, and drug use has made it difficult to run a business in the neighborhood. he is hoping for investments from all levels of government, including the city, to help the businesses still left in the area and the people that work and live in little saigon. moving you forward. people in the east bay have access to 1,800 miles of trial. east bay park celebrated the grand opening of the tyler ranch staging area. christy smith takes us there. >> we saw this place on facebook. decided to check it out.

>> reporter: melissa and shawn swanson came to the tyler ranch staging area and explore. >> there is parking. love the facilities they have. >> i want to welcome everyone to the grand opening celebration of the tyler ranch staging area at pleasanton ridge. >> reporter: there was an event to the completion of the area. >> the opening of the new staging area will increase access to 2,800 akers of open space, including 18 miles of trails here. >> reporter: people walking or hiking, cycling or horseback riding have access. visitors can check out the ridge trail and the tyler ranch trail. and pretty expansive views. >> it's beautiful. just gorgeous. >> we planned and designed and constructed this parking lot here, as well as the trails on tyler ranch. otherwise, it was mostly just grassland.

overseas, new signs the conflict between israel and hamas is expanding beyond gaza. the pentagon says "uss carnie" shot down two drones in waters. it was a move to protect vessels connected to a dozen nations. the first attacked from the bahamas. hours later, missiles struck two ships owned by panama and the u.k. yemen is claiming responsibility. saying it carried out a targeting operation against two israeli ships. they say the actions were in support of palestinians. >> we'll see some reaction.

i think they will try to keep it below the threshold of causing wider war. u.s. forces have been facing threats on land. bases in iraq and syria have come under attack supported by militia groups. it's happened about 75 times in 2 months, injuring dozens. new details about the earthquake that rocked southeast asia. a pregnant woman was killed following the powerful quake in the philippines. the 7.6 magnitude quake struck in the country's second largest island. four people were injured. nine others are missing. the quick triggered tsunami warnings but those were lifted. the owners of a south bay day care are cue in court. you remember in october, two toddlers drowned in a pool at happy home day care. police say the pool was properly

fenced off. according to court records, the owner's husband left it propped open after watering plants the night before. and the day care owners did not check it before they placed the children in the backyard the next morning. they are facing felony child endangerment charges. it's been two years since a security guard was shot and killed while protecting a tv news crew in oakland. and the trial begins for two of the hillers. he was shot thanksgiving weekend of 2021. he died in the hospital three days later. mitchell is accused of pulling the trigger. police accused mitchell and his apam police last year. a third suspect, is on the run. there's a $40,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. b.a.r.t.'s general manager was getting feedback from riders. the new chief of police went on a b.a.r.t. ride along.

temperatures are pretty mild outside. we show you some of the temperatures around the bay area. we have numbers. how about this? 59 degrees. what is interesting about that number, the average high is 61. if you're out there this time of night, it's only 59 degrees. it's not cold at all. all of the folks out there. no rain in the way. mild night. we got the cloudy skies and sub tropical moisture that is moving in from the ocean. keeping the temperatures up, 56 degrees in livermore. similar conditions in walnut creek. 56 degrees. but the view in san francisco shows what we're watching closely heading into tomorrow morning. patchy fog. some of this is moving across the golden gate bridge into san francisco. we'll see more of that into tomorrow morning. a slight chance of isolated showers. patchy dense fog for the morning. on the coast, increasing surf.

beach hazard for monday. and more substantial rain coming in late tuesday night on into wednesday. first up, the surf. big storms in the gulf of alaska, sending wave energy to the coast. look for large sets of feet and this is going on at the coast. our temperatures will be warming up monday and tuesday. you saw with the current temperatures out there. it's warm and clouds off the ocean. the rain chances are about to transition to the north. notice the low clouds we wake up to tomorrow morning. and sunshine, with temperatures from low 50s in the morning, likely seeing mid to upper 60s, for highs tomorrow afternoon. check out the temperatures. san jose, 66 degrees. mid-60s from san francisco to oakland. by tuesday, now, 70s. the average high is 61.

71 on tuesday. and could be close to record south of morgan hill, mid to upper 70s possible. upper 60s bayside. temperatures cool down on wednesday. the rain chances return. and begin to see this pivot occurring late tuesday afternoon, into wednesday. rain approaching the coast. tuesday looks dry. as we approach that wednesday morning commute, that is when the changes start to arrive. we see rain chances starting off in the north bay, after sunrise. midday wednesday, looks like substantial rain and the rain pushes to the east. rain totals with this wednesday storm, could be a half-inch to an inch of rain across the north bay. good news for the sierra. snow coming back in. that's wednesday into thursday. keep in mind for your travel plans, don't be caught offguard. chain controls likely returning to the high country wednesday into thursday. as we approach next weekend, for now, looks like clearing skies.

ground, pushing into the southern part of the gaza strip. israel has warned civilians to evacuate neighborhoods. those in gaza says it's not guaranteed a safe place to go. and health officials are issuing a dire warning about hospital inside gaza. raf sanchez reports from tel aviv. tonight, israel says forces are operating in every part of gaza, as it launches a new ground offensive into the south of the strip. its top general, vowing the assault will be just as fierce as the one that devastated the north. displaced palestinian families, many who came south in search of safety, now fleeing again. air strikes are raining down and the death toll rising. the hamas ministry says about 16,000 people have been killed since october 7th. this man just learned his father is among the dead. also killed, a prominent

scientist and college president. this is the hospital struggling to treat more than 1,000 patients, three-times more than its capacity. the head of the w.h.o. saying, i cannot find words strong enough to express concern over what we're witnessing. cease-fire now. the white house supporting israel's operations against hamas. urging it to do more to protect civilians. and saying talks on a fresh cease-fire have ground to a halt. >> what is the potential timeline to get them back on track? >> i wish i knew the answer to that one. i can tell you, we are working it really hard. hour-by-hour, to see if we can't get the sides back to the table. and growing outrage over the death of a civilian. he opened fire on hamas gunmen last week as they attacked this bus stop in jerusalem. then, knelt in the street, his hands in the air, only to be gunned down by israeli troops.

families enjoyed a scavenger hunt and a puppet show. santa made a trip to chinatown. the neighborhood hosted its winter wonder land. the event featured musicians, lion dancers. colorful. and local businesses teamed up to provide three toys for the kids. christmas came early for pumps in the south bay. it was the paws and claus event. i love this. dog owners got to take their furry friends to the park to sniff through a christmas-like maze. and got to take photos with santa. >> it's fun for our dog, bear, to meet other dogs. and our daughter gets to enjoy it at the same time. >> we were super excited. we've gone almost every year. this is the first year he gets to come with us. >> man. i'm going next year, terry.

he skipped his window appearance to the public at st. peters square. he's been ill. he is feeling better. he couldn't read through all of his remarks. the pope, who turns 87 this month, have been recovering from infectious bronchitis. he had acute bronchitis and was hospitalized for three days. the dutch prime minister and the prime minister from belgium are visiting the bay area for an economic mission. it will focus on the semiconductor industry. they will be in oakland before visiting stanford, microsoft and nvidia, to discuss artificial intelligence. san francisco's most fierce, fabulous and festive holiday event is back. the safeway holiday ice rink is hosting drag queens on ice. guests will get to watch queens perform on ice and skate alongside them, if you wish. some are terra lipsinki.

president joe biden, jill boyden, hosted the kennedy center honorees. the kennedy center honors a select group of people for their artistic influence on american culture. this year's honorees, billy crystal, singers queen latifah, barry gibb, dionne warwick. biden praised their accomplishments saying they help us see ourselves, each other and our world. thousands of marathon runners took over the streets of sacramento for the california international marathon. 10,000 runners participated. the course ended in downtown sacramento at the state capital. it's a flat and fast course. attracts athletes of all abilities to race. >> we're chasers. >> we were -- >> sweeper. that's our goal. >> runners had the chance to qualify for the olympic trials.

considering it's 57 in san francisco. 56 in walnut creek. more mid-50s around the trivalley. into san jose, 59 degrees. approaching 10:00. areas that will see the worst of the fog for the morning commute, inner bay. thick fog expected into monday morning. we'll see less upper level clouds and less of the clouds with clearing skies once the fog breaks in the afternoon. going from morning 50s to highs, trending above average. averages should be 50 to 60. mid-60s from san francisco to oakland. look what happens here on tuesday. mid 70s. temperatures around 15 degrees in morgan hill. then, those temperatures start to come on down, on wednesday, as we begin to see those rain chances. looks like tuesday stays dry right now.

tuesday night, also looking dry. it's once we get into wednesday morning that wednesday morning commute will see the wind pick up and that rain spread from north to south over the bay area. pretty fast moving. most of the rain moves out. that's a lot of rain that we see over the weekend. wednesday might see an inch of rain. and probably about one-tenth of an inch of rain or less. next chaps of showers and snow for thursday. next weekend, clearing skies and hold temperatures making a comeback. a taste of spring with some 70s in reach. and the rain comes back for wednesday. showers and a chilly breeze. temperatures in the 50s. and the lows could be 20s and 30s by saturday.
