carney warship shot down three drones heading toward it in the red sea off yemen. yesterday there were four missile and drone attacks on major ships along that major shipping route. let's get to claudio lavanga who joins us live. good morning. do we know who is responsible for these attacks? >> frances, phillip, good morning. yes, u.s. officials believe that both the drones and the missiles were launched by the houthi rebel group in yemen. as you mentioned, u.s. officials yesterday say the drones were intercepted and destroyed by the uss carney over the red sea. it's not clear whether the american destroyer was actually its target, but also, the two missiles were targeted and struck two commercial vessels who were operating in international shipping lanes still in the red sea. while there were no casualties there and minor damage was reported, while the u.s. calls

this attack threats to international maritime security says the attack was also commissioned or enabled actually by iran and that the u.s. is considering the appropriate response. now elsewhere in the region in iraq, the u.s. still on sunday carried out an air strike over the city of kirkuk in northern iraq, killing five men the u.s. believes were preparing to launch explosive projectiles towards u.s. forces based there. now the islamic resistance group in iraq confirmed five of its men had been killed and pledged retaliation against the u.s. but let's go back to what really kick started this tension in the region, the war in gaza. as you know, the ceasefire ended abruptly on friday, and the fighting resumed. israel since then has pledged it's trying its best to avoid civilian casualties by telling palestinians also to leaf the areas it expects to target.

but still, gaza officials say that since then, since friday, another 700 palestinians had been killed in the air strikes. phillip, frances? >> thank you for the update. french police are considering a terrorist motive in the stabbing murder of a young german tourist near the eiffel tower in paris on saturday. the suspect had apparently sworn allegiance to isis, be also suffered from mental illness. >> reporter: staring down the threat of terror once again after an attack that may have been fuelled in part by anger over the war in gaza. just steps from the eiffel tower, a man killing a german tourist with a knife, then striking two others with a hammer, injuring them both. french authorities say the man shouted "allahu akbar" and was tasered by police. authorities say the suspect called france an accomplice to atrocities in gaza.

emmanuel macron call it a terrorist attack. the suspect, a 26-year-old french iranian served four years in prison for a previous failed terror attack and was then put on a watch list. they also say he suffered severe mental illness. and before this attack, investigators say he pledged allegiance on social media to the islamist stake. the attack comes as tourists are flocking to paris ahead of the holidays and just eight months before paris hosts the olympic games. >> that could be me. that was my first feeling. >> reporter: paris has been at its highest alert of terrorists. a suspect josh lederman, nbc news. now to queens, new york, where a stabbing suspect attacked police officers. a young girl called 911 early sunday morning and said her cousin was killing her family members. when police arrived, the suspect stabbed one officer in the neck and hit another before he was fatally shot.

an 11-year-old girl was found stabbed outside the house. she did not survive. three other family members also died in the attack, including a 12-year-old boy. a 61-year-old woman is in critical condition. the officers who are hurt are expected to be okay. an investigation is ongoing. now let's turn to capitol hill where the house could vote as soon as this week on authorizing an impeachment inquiry into president biden. but some republicans are warning against this effort. here is allie raffa. >> reporter: house republicans are gearing up to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into president biden possibly as early as this week. >> i think it's something we have to do at this juncture. >> reporter: the inquiry the first of a multipatchy fog step process in the house that could result in an impeachment vote. speaker mike johnson hopeful his conference has the votes to make this first move, despite its narrow majority. >> i believe we will. i expect no democrats will assist in this effort, but they should. >> reporter: former speaker kevin mccarthy opened the

inquiry. >> house republicans have uncovered -- without a vote in september over allegations the president benefitted financially from his family's overseas business dealings. but it has yet to produce any evidence implicating mr. biden. johnson now pushing to formalize an inquiry in an effort to bolster its pogs against hunter and the house. a statement calling the effort, quote, a baseless politically motive attempt to smear president biden with lies. >> are you ready to make history, iowa? >> reporter: 2024 gop presidential hopeful ron desantis also weighing in, offering these words of caution to house republicans. >> don't use that inquiry as kind of a trojan horse to not then meet your responsibilities. >> reporter: even if this inquiry leads to a successful appointment vote in the house, a possible conviction and removal effort in a democrat-controlled senate would likely be doomed. >> our thanks to allie for that

report. at least 11 mountain climbers are dead after a volcano erupted in indonesia. 12 more people are still missing, but the search was put on old over safety concerns. the marapi mountain eruption sent ash nearly 10,000 feet into the air, coating nearby villages in a cloud of gray and white. officials say it was so bad in some parts it actually blocked out the sun. the west is in for a few rainy days. today might just be a simple drizzle, but millions are facing flood alerts during the storm system. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is here tracking this slow-moving storm system. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, guys. great to see you. we've seen so much rain in portions of the northwest over the past week. it's a parade of storms that continue toe move onshore. you mentioned a little bit of a break as we go throughout the day, but picking up in intensity as we go throughout the monday night hours and into tuesday, and really lasting throughout the week. millions under flash flood watches. we had that in the green, seattle, portland, eugene.
