faculty may not be in the classroom. i'll tell you what they're looking for with a four-day strike. also, a live look at the san francisco skyline, or what you can make of it. lots of dense fog out there for this monday morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking this morning's advisory and the outlook for conditions on your drive to work. this is "today in the bay." good monday morning to you. thank you so much for starting your week with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the commute with mike in just a bit, but let's talk about that forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's starting out foggy in some spots. we have a dense fog advisory in effect for north bay valleys, as well as the delta. you can see it drifting around other parts of the bay area as well. with the dense fog, we go from having those showers over the weekend to patchy fog, and then along the coastline we'll have some dangerous surf conditions, with a beach hazard statement in effect today. then going into the middle of

the week the rain will be back starting late tuesday night. as we take a look at some of our cameras around the bay area, you can see the low clouds in oakland, and we're also seeing some low clouds in dublin. but not yet meeting the roadway, but we are seeing very low visibility in parts of the north bay right now. novato, zero visibility at this point. if you're in that area, you have to drive through, make sure you allow extra time to get to work and maybe leave a few minutes earlier. as far as temperatures today, once that fog clears out, we're headed for the mid to upper 60s and it will shape up to be a nice day. mike, that fog may have an impact for some bay bridge commuters. >> that's right. low clouds hovering around, so the roadway itself is clearly visible al the toll plaza for these drivers. our view of the bay bridge, it's a little impeded by those low clouds. this may complicate things if it touches the roadway and makes visibility even tougher as you approach. one lane blocked westbound 80,

the albany exit, a big rig that's blocking the slow lane as well. it is a large vehicle and it just started slowing. i think a tow truck might have arrived. we'll track that. here is the dense fog, zero visibility as you come through novato. i know you all are pros because the fog comes through frequently, but still use caution because not everybody is as good as you are. the rest of the bay moves smooth, but we'll watch for clouds. >> thank you very much. a live look from israel toward the gaza border. israel expanding its ground offensive into southern gaza, warning palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods. residents say there's no safe place to go. beyond gaza, there were multiple attacks on commercial vessels in the red sea. houthi rebels from yemen are claiming responsibility. gaza health leaders say new patients are flooding hospitals at the end of the week-long cease-fire, and according to a hospital spokesperson, more than

15 children tied died over the weekend. most hospitals are desperately short on supplies. israel's ground offensive is triggering new concerns the conflict may spill into other parts of the middle east. >> brie jackson has a look at where the military is focused right now and the push for hamas to release more hostages. >> reporter: israel intensifying attacks on the gaza strip after negotiations over a pause in fighting stalled. >> it fell apart because hamas was unwilling and refused to come up with additional lists of women and children, which we know they are holding. >> reporter: israel is vowing to continue the war, despite repeated calls for a cease-fire. the biden administration is urging israel to limit civilian deaths and is still working to secure the release of the remaining hostages. >> we're working at this literally by the hour at the national security council and all the way up the high levels of the administration.

>> reporter: lawmakers are also calling for a long-term political solution. >> hamas needs to be taken out, it is a terrorist organization. >> how do we do that? >> i think the way to do that, as many terrorism experts have said, is to create a durable and strong coalition of allies. >> what happens next, that's what i want the arab world, the united states and western world to come in with a governing plan differently than today. >> reporter: meanwhile, there are growing concerns the conflict could spread to other parts of the region. a u.s. warship shot down at least two houthi drones sunday. it happened in the red sea where houthi rebels have been launching a series of attacks on vessels. the pentagon says it does not appear the uss carney itself was a target. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. new details in a new bay area connection emerging in a hate crime investigation on the east coast. one of three palestinians recently shot in the seemingly

random attack was born in san francisco, according to the "chronicle." the student was visiting family in burlington last month when he and two friends were shot. all three victims survived. at this point, the suspect, 48-year-old jason eaten, is facing multiple counts of attempted murder. his family says awartani has met his diagnosis with courage, resilience and humor. they created a gofundme page to help pay for medical expenses. so far, it was raised more than $837,000. 5:06 this morning. and cal state college students may be in a bumpy ride this morning, not only are finals coming up, but some campuses are bracing for a rolling strike. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us. it sounds like some of the largest campuses are where the strike will be felt the most. >> right, there are four campuses participating, but faculty from all others, 29,000

professors, lecturers, counselors, coaches who will wake off the job over the next four days. this is a live look from cal poly pomona where the first day of the picketing will happen. on wednesday, they will walk out at csu los angeles, thursday sacramento state. here in the bay area, san francisco state is where the lecturers are walk off the job tomorrow. the union tells us that more than 500 faculty members will participate, just at san francisco state alone, and that includes faculty from other campuses. faculty union members say that their salaries have not kept up with inflation, and so they are asking for a 12% raise in one year. the csu system says it proposed a 15% salary increase for faculty over three years, but the union says the offer is unacceptable, so they will be

walking out and rolling along those picket lines. san francisco state referred us to the csu chancellor's office, which said in a statement, our goal and hope is to minimize any disruption to our students. csu is prepared to get back at the negotiating table. now, some students say that their finals are going to be impacted, and of course there are a lot of athletic events happening at this time of year. but a lot of the students say they're going to join their professors, lecturers and faculty members on the picket line to show solidarity. >> thank you. while that's going on, meanwhile, a late-night agreement in san francisco has san francisco school workers not walking off the job. trade workers, including plumbers, carpenters and roofers, were set to hold a one-day strike today. late last night both sides announced a memorandum of understanding is in place with the sides agreeing to negotiate in good faith to address outstanding grievances and a plan to reach a new deal by the end of january.

a warning for anyone headed to the coastline today, the national weather service saying that all northwest facing beaches will have an increased risk of sneaker waves. those are the unexpected large waves rolling in by surprise, which can sweep unsuspecting people out to sea. the warning takes effect at noon. everyone is advised not to turn their backs to the water. >> never. meteorologist kari hall is here tracking today's conditions. how high is the surf expected to get? >> we are expecting pretty big sneaker waves. as we say, never turn your back to the water, because even on a day that seems fairly calm, you could see those sneaker waves, where it does come up a lot higher than some of the previous waves. what we're seeing is quite a few storm systems developing, a lot of them moving into the pacific northwest, but, also, causing those large swells along our coasts as well. so we'll see that happening today, as well as tomorrow, and you want to make sure you're paying attention to those beach

flags. if you are going to the coastline today, of course, the red flag means there's a high hazard, and then also if you see two red flags, it is closed to the public. just watching out for some of those signs today. we're going to have a fairly mild day and our temperatures going from low 50s along the coastline to low 60s for today. we'll see some mid-60s for the inland valleys, with a high up to about 68 degrees in morgan hill this afternoon and napa headed for 66 degrees. so we're going to see more temperatures like this, eventually the rain comes back. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike has a look at what we can expect at the gas pump. >> a little lower in san jose, the key spot, $3.91 at kwik serv on alum rock avenue. the top ten are all below the $4 mark. the best in contra costa county, that's the 7-eleven in oakley and it's at $4.05. the stop is on main street. cheap by comparison to the lowest in san francisco county,

conference, al jabar, causing quite a stir after he announced there was no science to reduce the need on fossil fuels. people are just noticing and it's become quite the thing. in addition to being in charge of the climate organization, he's in charge of a uae based energy company. we were planning to talk about artificial intelligence, i understand that interview is not available. so we will continue to get our technical things figured out and i will throw it back to you and we'll just come back a little later. >> looking forward to it. thanks, scott. we're talking about the forecast today. clear behind us here, but pretty dense fog in some parts. >> yeah, it's getting worse in some areas. even though in livermore, visibility is at 10 miles, as you move toward dublin visibility is a lot lower. we're seeing quarter mile visibility in oakland. keep in mind that a lot of these sensors are airport, so it may be in between those where we are seeing some very low visibility

as the fog moves around. this time of year we do typically start to see this kind of fog developing. after we get those first initial rainfalls in the fall time, all of that moisture in the ground starts to condense and our temperatures drop, where we see the dew point matching the temperatures. so we are going to have very high humidity and low visibility as all of this fog moves around. so that's a look at the dublin camera. we'll continue to see clouds and fog through 8:00. the dense fog advisory will be in effect until 10:00 this morning. so you can see at 10:00 we're starting to see some sun peeking out, and then as we go throughout the day, mostly sunny, overall a really nice afternoon after a foggy start. our temperatures are slightly above what we usually see for high temperatures for this time of year, reaching into the mid-60s. we'll see a high of 66 degrees in dublin today. and tomorrow we'll see those highs headed for the upper 60s,

so spots like concord, as well as san mateo, and mountain view as well reaching 68 degrees, with even some low 70s. it will be a little cooler on wednesday and that's when we will see some rain arriving. so until then, we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies and rain just to our north, but a system that has been to the north for quite a while, bringing spots like seattle and much of oregon some rain. it will start to move down as we go into wednesday. looking at our hour-by-hour forecast, we're at 10:00 on wednesday morning, we see a wave of rain coming through. and it's going to most likely last for a few hours before we get some breaks. then we see some spotty rain in our wednesday evening forecast. so this mostly looks like early on wednesday into the afternoon, and our rainfall totals may reach about a quarter to half inch of rain. this is a nice soaking, but definitely not enough to catch us up to normal as we've seen

quite a bit of a dry start to our fall season. going toward the middle of the week, we have that first wave of rain and then the weekend we're drying out once again as the rain heads back to the north. we're going to keep a slight chance of rain in the forecast on thursday, friday into the weekend is looking dry, and our temperatures cooling down, with only upper 50s and low 60s. our mornings will be very chilly as well by the end of the week. in the near term, we're focused on the fog this morning, sunshine for the afternoon, and spotty showers heading through the middle of the week. and, mike, you were tracking a new incidents already. one of those is the fog you're talking about. you see the influence on our maps. we'll talk about that in a second. we have a little slowing over here toward san francisco, the san francisco side of the bay bridge. that doesn't indicate the morning commute is starting to queue up. we'll see if the metering lights are turned on, in the next 15 minutes we expect that. over here we didn't expect this slowing and you may come across this continuing for westbound 80, out of richmond to the

albany exit. this crash involving a larger truck, tens of thousands of pounds of truck has to be cleared. it's blocking your slow lane as you're traveling west in your commute direction. crews are on scene and several chp units have been released. i think this may now be off to the shoulder. the flashing lights may be a distraction and perhaps lower clouds, lower visibility. use caution there. definitely the case in the north bay where slowing started for westbound 37. there is a crash reported as you get toward atherton, the roadway that cuts over toward 101. no lanes blocked from the initial report, but we're tracking that. very low visibility. kari is talking about down to zero miles, so less than a mile visibility through novato. a few hundred feet in some parts, some patches of the north bay. do use caution. that is a factor for your drive. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. there are low clouds in many cameras just above the level for the roadways, including the dublin area. there's typical slowing out of

not an issue for the drivers. you can see by their speeds. it may become more of a factor, especially across the bay bridge. we have the yellow, richmond bridge, the toll plaza being influenced by lower visibility. that's the same area we're talking about that big rig that has to be cleared from the right shoulder. westbound 80 picking up volume, we still have activity near the albany exit. the exit is open, westbound 80 does slow for that activity on the shoulder. the bay bridge shows a build and the metering lights should be turned on any second. the rest of the bay shows a clear drive but not a clear view. we're watching for issues related to fog. >> thanks, mike. happening today, two men go to trial accused of murdering a bay area security guard and decorated law enforcement officer who was protecting a tv news crew. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live this morning. this investigation is still open, correct?

>> reporter: it is. good morning to you, laura and marcus. because law enforcement has put out a reward, they are still looking for a third suspect in connection with this murder. later this morning at 9:00, in oakland, the two suspects who are in custody will go on trial, we are talking about mitchell and hale, who have been charged in the murder of kevin nishida, a retired police officer, having worked for the san jose and hayward police departments. he was guarding a tv news crew in oakland when he was shot thanksgiving week of 2021. nishida died in the hospital three days later. mitchell is accused of pulling the trigger, while hale is accused of being mitchell's accomplice. nishida's widow is pushing for the recall of district attorney pamela price. she told nbc bay area, nishida's widow told nbc bay area, she feels the men accused in her husband's murder are not being

prosecuted aggressively enough. now, that third suspect who i mentioned earlier, his name is laron gilbert. there's a $40,000 reward being offered for information leading to his arrest. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. happening today, a pretrial hearing for suspected man in a deadly smooth targeting half moon bay mushroom farm. prosecutors say zhao was a disgruntled worker who shot and killed seven farmworkers in january. he has pleaded not guilty, but in an interview, he admitted to our janelle wang he killed coworkers. today's hearing gets under way at 9:00 this morning. a sad follow-up, divers have been discovering a large chunk of wreckage of a u.s. military aircraft that went down off the coast of japan last wednesday. that's when an osprey carrying

eight crew members plunged into the water. at the time of the crash, the body of just one victim was recovered. air force says that this morning recovery teams found the remains of at least several more victims. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. developing right now in the middle east, we have a live look from israel towards the gaza border. israel expanding its push into southern gaza, warning palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods. people who live there say there is no safe place to go. the u.s. is already pressuring israel to protect gaza's civilians. there are new signs the conflict between israel and hamas is expanding beyond gaza. the pentagon says the uss carney shot down two houthi drones in the southern red sea sunday. the move was intended to protect three commercial vessel targets. the first ship attacked carried a flag from the bahamas. hours later, missiles struck two

ships owned by panama and the uk. houthi rebels from yemen are claiming responsibility. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is following the latest on israel's expanding ground operations in gaza. she'll join us with a live report in our next half hour. starbucks is not commenting on a weekend incident where vandals targeted one of its peninsula locations. there were spray painted words. we blurred out the drawing of an obscene gesture. it was in san carlos here the hiller aviation museum. after we learned of the incident, we sent a camera yesterday, but the graffiti had been cleaned and the store reopened. starbucks and the union are in a legal dispute over a social media posting by the union supporting palestinians. it's not clear if this incident is tied to that dispute. 5:36 this morning. a mega merger shaking up the airline industry. alaska airlines wants to buy hawaiian airlines in a deal worth nearly $2 billion. scott mcgrew is here for us. not the first time we've seen

something like this. we're going to have to get government approval first, right? >> the government has been grumpy about mergers and acquisitions lately. the obvious comparison is jetblue trying to buy spirit. the government doesn't want them to. that's in court right now. this case is a little bit different because alaska and hawaiian don't share the same routes, or not many. we assume there would be the same number of flights after the proposed merger as there were before. neither is a low cost airline like spirit, so the company could argue they won't be raising fares, which is certainly the government's main concern. here is the head of alaska airlines over the weekend. well, it sounds like -- there we go. >> the people of hawaii expand alaska's reach across the pacific and create an even stronger airline. >> so this really is showing how alaska airlines has been growing. they purchased virgin america a

while back. >> i was sorry to see that airline go. >> i never got to fly it. >> they had very unique customer service, but it's part of alaska now, a great airline as well. it will be different in that alaska took over virgin and then just killed the virgin brand. in this case, alaska is proposing to keep the hawaiian brand, but hawaiian air would be owned by alaska. virgin flew all kinds of places. hawaiian flies to, you guessed it, hawaii. and we only have that one destination, all your eggs are really in one basket. hawaii had to deal with really tough covid restrictions for quite some time, then you had the maui fires, you remember officials on maui said please do not come. so other carriers, southwest, united, alaska, they had to deal with problems of getting into hawaii, but they had other places to go. los angeles and seattle and phoenix and chicago, that hawaiian didn't. so hawaiian is in some financial

trouble. >> a big move for this airline industry, i know a lot of folks are, like, okay, let's see what will happen. >> there's always consolidation in this industry. >> as long as they keep the guava drink. it puts you in the mood to go to hawaii. new this morning, the new three-year deal between actors and hollywood studios may soon become official. the ratification vote is expected tomorrow, and even though 86% of union board members approve the deal, approval is not considered a foregone conclusion. some are criticizing parts of the deal and have hinted at a closer than expected outcome. let's take a live look out in san jose. christmas in the park there, beautiful start of our monday morning, and kicking off the holidays. >> did you put up your tree, marcus? >> we'll talk about that later. no, i have not, to answer the question. when you've got a tree like this, why do you need to put one up in your own home?

>> that's not outside of your window. >> it used to be. we're going to start out with low visibility, and also some dense fog. as we take a look at the oakland camera, you can barely see, and even worse in dublin. these cameras are up a little higher than the roadway. we are seeing spots where the fog has been really dense, and really the north bay is under that dense fog advisory, where visibility is down to less than a quarter of a mile. once that clears out, we have a nice day ahead as our temperatures reach into the mid to upper 60s. morgan hill and san martin warmer, with highs in the upper 60s. we'll be in the mid-60s in san francisco. we will have a slightly warmer day tomorrow with highs up to the low 70s in some parts of the south bay. then for wednesday, as rain arrives, temperatures will be dropping. we'll talk more about the timeline of that rain. mike, this morning, the fog is becoming more of a factor. >> yeah, especially as the road

rises to the clouds. we have flashing lights and these are folks changing lanes. still good spacing from what we can see. you can't see farther down the flat section, so that is an issue, as far as the bridge crossing at the san mateo bridge. the high-rise comes into the low clouds. that may be a factor. folks are still navigating, according to the speed limit through the area. but do notice that the map doesn't show that yellow in the north bay, even tougher visibility there. we're showing slowing for san jose, typical pattern. we're looking at highway 13, there is a crash southbound on the warren freeway. we'll track that. this one no longer a factor, just cleared from the roadway, chp says, west 80 at the albany exit. you can kind of make out the orange, coming through the tougher visibility. over here at the bay bridge, across the span, travel slows and the metering lights are on. there's fog throughout the north bay and throughout lots of the east bay. it will become more of a factor as more commuters hit the road.

already launched an impeachment investigation months ago. >> yeah. good morning to you. they did it without specific authorization. the speaker of the house at the time, kevin mccarthy, fighting for his job, obviously we continue to have technical problems this morning. it's a monday. so speaker of the house mccarthy at the time wanted to give the far right of his party what they wanted, so he instructed committees to go ahead with an impeachment inquiry without a vote. if the house takes a vote this week, it would be a bit of a formality. the bidens at the kennedy honors last night. the question people on both sides of the aisle are asking is, what is exactly the accusation that they have against president biden? why should there be inquiries into his behavior? biden's critics say the president benefitted from his office, made money. but proving it has been a gigantic flop. the inquiries until now have not been able to establish any connection.

other news, ron desantis was on nbc's "meet the press" sunday morning, where he said a desantis administration would end affordable care act, repeal and replace has been a stated plan by republicans for quite some time. but the idea that makes a lot of political strategist cringe, because americans like the aca. 40 million americans are insured under the affordable care act. some polls show they're less in favor of obamacare, but that's the same thing. here is governor desantis. >> i just want to be clear. are you going to keep obamacare in place and make revisions to it? is that your plan? >> this will be replacing obamacare. >> so you want to repeal and replace it? >> obamacare hasn't worked. we are going to replace and supersede with a better plan. >> donald trump has said much the same thing. looking at alternatives, he says, and lamenting the day six senators stopped him from repealing obamacare during his administration.

the problem, though, with repeal and replace, is the replace part. americans do not like this. desantis has not explained what his replacement health care insurance would be. trump said throughout his administration his master health care plan was just two weeks away. >> we have come up with a solution that's really, really, i think, very good. now, i have to tell you, it's an unbelievably complex subject. nobody knew that health care could be so complicated. >> they will have so many options. this will cost the united states government virtually nothing, and people will have great, great health care. >> you remember the senate came within moments of ending obamacare, but it was republican senator john mccain at the very last second who turned his thumb down on the idea and the affordable care act continued. speaking of names from the past, former congresswoman liz cheney will be on the "today"

show. she has a new memoir. 5:48 right now. a new book shines a light on a unique san francisco artist community. the book "art is art" features artwork created by men and women with developmental disabilities. all the artists create their works at creativity explored. it's a nonprofit community studio helping those artists paint, draw and sculpt. in some cases it helps market and sell their work. the book's editor says some artists have difficulty verbally expressing themselves and can use their art to tackle important social issues, including sexuality and civil rights. >> sometimes the pre conceived notion is that people with disabilities don't have opinions about these kinds of issues or don't have creative juices flowing through them, so we really are excited that this allows them the venues, the opportunities to express themselves. >> the creativity studio is also

the game on nbc. you can tell where we're going. how about we start with the g.o.a.t. there, seven-time olympic gold medalist simone biles attending, all bundled up. she's seen kissing her husband, jonathan owens, before the start of the game. another familiar face, taylor swift was there to support her boyfriend. she's dating travis kelce. this is the fifth chiefs game she's attended in person this season. it is the first game she watched where the chiefs lost. the game was close, by the way, with the chiefs coming up short on their final drive. packers fans were not shaken by the star power in the stands. young cheeseheads were spotted holding a sign saying "shake it off, we have simone biles". >> go taylor's boyfriend, how funny. >> when you get married, you get to go down to the field. when you're just boyfriend/girlfriend, you have to stay up.

[ laughter ] >> she's going to go viral now. >> yeah, exactly. a lot of new football fans. we had some cool weather as we were watching the 49ers game yesterday, but we don't have much of that in the bay area, thank goodness. we're starting out with a few low clouds. as we take a live look outside at walnut creek, visibility is not bad at all. as you're driving around the bay area, it is pretty dense fog that's been moving in, and settling down into some of those low-lying areas. in oakland, we can see the headlights there on the camera, you can barely see the cars driving by. also, in dublin, the fog is lowering, as we're going to see that for the next couple of hours with the dense fog advisory. for parts of the north bay, really dense fog moving around, but then once it clears up, we'll see temperatures in the mid to upper 60s for the afternoon. after the foggy start, it will

be a nice day. we're looking ahead to see when we're going to get some rain. we do have quite a bit of cloud cover and a lot of rain moving to the north of us. that's where it's been recently. then it starts to sink down, with a chance of showers for the middle of the week. early on wednesday morning we see rain moving into parts of the north bay, and then spreading across the bay area by midmorning into the early afternoon. then it tapers off to some spotty showers, we may still see some light, lingering showers on thursday. most of it coming on wednesday. during that time, these areas in green, it does show that we could see about a quarter to a half inch of rain, maybe a little higher farther to the north. then going beyond that into the weekend, there will be several storm systems, once again retreating back to the north. so we are going to have some dry weather into our weekend. so take a look at our seven-day forecast. we're dry today, and a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week and then you can see

those temperatures going down. really the morning hours are going to be much colder by the weekend. but we are going to see some dry conditions after that midweek rain, and that's our only shot of getting something that could help us out with our rainfall deficits for the fall. mike, now you have another crash in richmond? >> we do. unfortunately, this is all affecting westbound 80, the earlier crash at the albany exit cleared and so did the slowing. folks are now slowed by this distraction and actually one lane might be blocked westbound 80 right around san pablo avenue as you're coming toward richmond. there's also the mustard colored highlighting, which means low visibility as far as the index goes, through the east bay corridor, oakland, berkeley, richmond, in the north bay, highway 37 just starts slowing, and holding with muir island. highway 4 shows slowing into concord. we see more slowing and fog just north of the water. it definitely will be around the

nbc bay area responds to a south bay man who wanted to find his match. but instead, engaged in a subscription battle. >> he asked consumer investigator chris chmura's team to make advances with his case. michael in san jose said "i do" to the dating site eharmony, for about 40 bucks per month. the next day he changed his mind and sent an email to get an annulment. he took this screenshot that said he could break up without any penalty or obligation within the third business day of subscribing. done, right? wrong. a few days later, eharmony charged michael $42.16. twice he says he asked reps to reverse the charge. they denied him. michael called us for help. we asked eharmony what happened.
