tensions surge as israel expands its ground offensive in gaza. we're live in washington with overnight developments and growing fears the middle east conflict may expand into neighboring territories. finals week may be around the corner, but some cal state faculty will walk out of the classroom. the potential bay area impact from a planned strike on some campuses. and we are waking up to dense fog across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is breaking down the advisory right now. this is "today in the bay." good monday morning to you. i love the sound of that, monday morning. >> you do? >> i'm talking myself into it. >> said no one ever. >> speak and it shall be, right? i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. hope you had a great weekend. kari and mike are both here tracking this fog that we have. it could make for a rough commute. >> yeah, especially in parts of the north bay, the delta where we've seen the really dense fog.

and that's a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we are going to see in parts of the bay area some dense fog moving around. here is a look above the golden gate bridge, and we went from showers over the weekend to now patchy fog. so that moisture in some spots kind of soaked into the ground. it's condensing. as we look at the coastal areas for today, watch out for the potential of some dangerous surf and beach hazards, as well as rain coming back midweek. a look at our current visibility, down to zero in novato. be really careful in the north bay. as we get to this time of year, sometimes we see fog in different areas due to it kind of moving out of the sacramento valley and through the delta. it happens in the fall time and it can be a lot more thick and the visibility may be lower than what we see during times of the year. so watching out for that for the start of the day. this afternoon is going to be beautiful, with highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s, even

a little bit warmer than we typically see for this time of year. mike, the fog may be complicating the commute. >> it's complicating our view of the commute. we're at the emeryville camera where we look toward the berkeley curve or bay bridge. we're looking directly below the building. traffic is flowing smoothly. spacing is pretty good in the westbound direction. that low visibility may complicate things as they clear the second crash from richmond this morning. the speed sensors still jammed up as you're approaching san pablo area. they may have the right lane blocked by the crash. another crash southbound 680 as you're heading past 84. no injuries reported right now. back to you. >> thank you. 6:03 right now. a live look from israel toward the gaza border. israel is expanding its ground offensive into southern gaza, warning palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods. people who live there say

there's no safe place to go. beyond gaza there were multiple attacks yesterday on commercial vessels in the red sea. houthi rebels from yemen will claiming responsibility. >> meanwhile, gaza health leaders say new patients are flooding hospitals with the end of the week-long cease-fire. according to one hospital spokesperson, more than 15 children died over the weekend. also, despite more supplies arriving during the truce, most hospitals are desperately short on supplies and fuel. israel's expanding ground offensive is triggering concerns the conflict may spread into other parts of the middle east. >> brie jackson is live in washington with a look at where the israeli military is focusing right now. >> reporter: good morning, marcus, laura. the israeli military announced it's expanding its ground assault against hamas to all of the gaza strip, and warned civilians to evacuate certain neighborhoods. but those in gaza say there is no guaranteed safe place to go.

israel intensifying its attacks on the gaza strip, after negotiations over a pause in fighting stalled. >> it fell apart because hamas was unwilling and refused to come up with additional lists of women and children, which we know they are holding. >> reporter: israel is vowing to continue the war, despite repeated calls for a cease-fire. the biden administration is urging israel to limit civilian deaths and is still working to secure the release of the remaining hostages. >> we're working at this literally by the hour at the national security council and the high levels of the administration. >> reporter: lawmakers are also calling for a long-term political solution. >> hamas needs to be taken out. it is a terrorist organization. >> how would you do that? >> i think the way to do that as many terrorism experts have said, is to create a durable and strong coalition of allies. >> what happens next, that's when i want the arab world, the

united states and the western world to come in with a governing plan different than we have today. >> reporter: meanwhile, there are growing concerns that the conflict could spread to other parts of the region. a u.s. warship shot down at least two houthi drones sunday. it happened in the red sea where houthi rebels have been launching a series of attacks on vessels. the pentagon says it does not appear the uss carney itself was a target. and u.s. troops in iraq and syria have been attacked more than 60 times since the israel/hamas conflict began. the u.s. has launched some strikes in response. laura, marcus. >> brie jackson in washington this morning, thank you. new details and a new bay area connection emerging in a hate crime investigation on the east coast. one of three palestinians recently shot in a seemingly random attack there was born in san francisco. that's all according to the

"chronicle." hisham awartani is now paralyzed from the chest down. the student was visiting family in burlington last month when he and two friends were shot. all three survived. at this point the suspect, 48-year-old jason eaton is facing multiple counts of attempted murder. his family says he's met his diagnosis with courage, resilience and humor. they have a gofundme page to help pay for medical expenses and so far it has raised more than $837,000. a volcanic eruption in indonesia has left at least 11 climbers dead and dozens others missing. this is the mount marapi volcano located in the westernmost sumatra island. it started erupting yesterday, spreading volcanic ash over villages. an evacuation order went out for hikers on the mountain.

rescuers did find three people alive, but they had to suspend their search due to new eruptions. cal state college students may be in for a bumpy ride this week. not only are finals coming, but some campuses are bracing for rolling strikes. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us. it sounds like some of the largest campuses are where the strike will probably be felt the most. >> not all campuses are participating, but representatives from all campuses will participate in the campuses that are participating, if that makes sense. we're talking about 29,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors that will walk off the job. the first day of picketing will happen today in poly cal pomona. here in the bay area at san francisco state, lecturers will walk off the job tomorrow as one of the four campuses participating in this action.

their union tells us more than 500 faculty members at sfsu will participate. that will include some faculty members from other csu campuses like cal state east bay and san jose state. faculty union members say their salaries are not keeping up with inflation, so they are asking for a 12% raise in one year. the csu system says that it proposed a 15% salary increase for faculty over three years, but the union says that offer is not acceptable. >> first of all, they're not offering 15%, they're offering 5% for this year, when we're asking for 12%. then they're stipulating that they would be willing to give us 5% in the next two years if p the state provides the money. >> reporter: san francisco state referred us to the chancellor's office, which said in a statement, our goal and hope is to minimize disruptions to students. csu is prepared to get back to the bargaining table with cfa at any time.

some students say that their finals are going to be impacted, their athletic events, some coaches are participating as well. but some of those students say they're going to walk the picket lines in support of those faculty members. >> taking the solidarity approach. thank you. meantime, a late-night agreement means san francisco school workers will not walk off the job. trade workers, including plumbers, carpenters and roofers were all set to hold a one-day strike today, but late last night both sides announced a memorandum of understanding in place, with sides agreeing to negotiate in good faith to address outstanding grievances, and they plan to reach a new deal by the end of january. a warning for anyone headed to the coastline today, the national weather service saying all northwest facing beaches have have an increased risk of sneaker waves, the unexpectedly large waves rolling in by surprise, which can sweep

unsuspecting people into the sea. the warning takes effect at noon. everyone is advised not to turn their backs on the water. meteorologist kari hall is tracking today's conditions. how high are we talking about here, kari? >> we are seeing bigger waves coming up, some of those breakers, and most of the waves will be at about 10 feet or maybe a little higher. but a lot of the big waves have been targeting the pacific northwest due to the storm systems that have been pretty active there and churning up some of those bigger waves. maybe a little higher tomorrow as well early in the morning, but then we'll see that beach hazard statement expire by late tomorrow. we're going to see in some parts of the bay area some of these flags up. you want to know what they mean. the red flag means a high hazard, there may be strong rip currents, as well as some high surf. if you do see two red flags, that means that water will be closed to the public. so just a heads-up going there today, temperatures remain cool, after the fog clears out, we will have some sunshine, and our

temperatures in the low 60s. we'll talk about when we could see rain in our forecast coming up. mike has a look at what the gas prices are looking like. >> we are looking, a little lower price in san jose, $3.91 at kwik serv on alum rock avenue. the top ten prices in santa clara county are all below the $4 mark. some just barely. in contra costa county, though, 7-eleven at oakley, $4.05 on main street. cheap by comparison if you look at the lowest for san francisco county, that's $4.49, speedway on cesar chavez street, south van ness. on the roadways, the fog is a factor. it is showing up on our live cameras. concern for south 680, a crash, two vehicles in the middle, that really is starting an early jam coming into sunol and through fremont. that is a big sticking point, as well as folks getting to 84.

right now at 6:15 on this monday morning, we're watching out for low visibility, down to a quarter mile or less in much of the north bay, down to oakland. we're going to see this fog drifting around for the next few hours with a dense fog advisory continuing until 10:00 a.m. we're watching this as well as rain in the forecast. more on that coming up in a few minutes. and less visibility right here, more fog. san mateo bridge westbound, we're seeing traffic build as far as the volume goes. slow, perhaps a bit because of visibility. there is a crash from the toll plaza heading to this spot where our camera is. we've got two crashes over in the tri-valley. we'll sort those out as well. good morning. very happy monday to you. the s&p 500 trading around its all-time high for the year. gold and bitcoin both up as government bonds don't pay as well as they used to. alaska airlines wants to buy hawaiian, we'll talk more about

that later in the newscast. ibm is set to announce a powerful new quantum computer today. spotify is cutting more jobs, as many as 1,500. this will be the third layoff this year for the music service. the company struggles to make money and has raised subscription rates in 50 countries. this is the head of cop28, the u.n.-based climate crisis, causing quite a stir, after he announced there was no science supporting the move to reduce the world's dependency on fossil fuels. he actually made that comment last month, but people are just now noticing the video. now, in addition to being in charge of the climate organization, al jabar is the head of a uae based energy company. you've seen stories about how artificial intelligence can help kids cheat at school by writing their papers for them. but a.i. can walk students through their homework as well. chemistry and math in particular.

i spoke with the head of a company called sizzle who used to be the head of a.i. at facebook. >> there was nothing like this before. a book is static, you have to figure out which page you need to open, right? the book is not going to respond to a problem that someone gives you in another format. so that's the beauty of a.i. you can give it whatever you're working on and it can help you through it. >> now, there are good and bad things about any new technology and i think it's up to teachers and families to decide where a.i. is in that matrix. i do encourage people to try it one way or the other. don't just dimly be aware that things like chatgpt work. you should actually try it for yourself. >> i agree completely. i think there are aspects of it that are amazing and surprising. but it also takes some learning to figure out how to use it and to use it well. >> he says a.i. tools are particularly helpful to parents of high schoolers because -- and

morning. 6:19 right now. it is nearly time two foreign presidents, british royalty and a pop superstar making the list for "time" magazine's person of the year. chinese president xi jinping, singer taylor swift, openai ceo, sam altman, prosecutors of former president donald trump, barbie, russian president vladimir putin, king charles, and jerome powell making the list. they make their decision of those with the most global influence. trending this morning, while he may not have been on the short list for person of the year, one ups driver is being praised for going above and beyond the call of duty. >> it happened near sarasota springs, new york. video shows the driver noticing already delivered amazon packages left out in the rain. he can be seen pushing them

call tule fog that happens in the central valley after the first big rainfall, and we are also dealing with high humidity and cool temperatures, with a calm wind. that fog drifts into the bay area through our mountain gaps, coming into parts of the south county. we see fog drifting through the delta and down into the bay, into the east bay, and also moves through the north bay as well through some of those mountain gaps through the sacramento valley into parts of the north bay. so we're seeing that this morning. once it clears out, we are going to have a very nice and mild day. our temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 60s for this afternoon, and it will be slightly warmer tomorrow as we continue on with sunshine. but then on wednesday we'll see rain coming in from the north, as this storm system moves into the bay area first, affecting the north bay with rain early on wednesday morning. look at the timing. that's right in the middle of the morning commute.

we're going to see some of the rain coming in wednesday morning into the noon hour, as well as early afternoon. then we should catch a break, with the possibility of lingering showers on thursday. so between wednesday and thursday, we're looking at mostly about a quarter to half inch of rain in these areas shaded in green, and then for areas farther to the north, it may be closer to three-quarters of an inch of rain, up to an inch. once that passes by fairly quickly and we see another quick pass of rain on thursday, the rest of the week into the weekend is all dry. so we take a look at our seven-day forecast, with cooler temperatures coming in. we're going from highs in the upper 60s and low 70s to highs in the upper 50s as that rain clears on friday. kari, you showed this shot a second ago. i wanted to remind folks it's tougher to see, this is the shot from the dublin camera coming toward this area. lighter traffic, as you saw,

when it comes to making the postseason, it already looks like our niners have a fighting spirit. >> they sure do. did you see the game yesterday? they took on the eagles. the top team in the league record-wise. philly declared it rocky day to mark the anniversary of the film's premiere. the niners scored on six straight possessions, including a 48-yard td by deebo samuels in the second half. it was one of his three touchdowns. afterwards, he talked about this kind of being a revenge game. >> they beat us in the nfc championship and we wanted to get back. but at the end of the day, it's just football. we're talking trash, having fun. just came out here and got a win. >> well, the game had a lot of action. fans weren't sure what was happening when the niners greenlaw took a swing at someone on the eagles sidelines.

it's not just san francisco in the fog. we are seeing some approaching the bay bridge toll plaza there in oakland. you can see how the fog is not as bad as we saw, but look at oakland and dublin this morning. certainly some of those places we're seeing thicker fog. >> that's right. so it's really hitting certain areas harder than others. >> yeah, it's mostly the north bay where we are seeing some really dense fog and the dense fog advisory. also through the delta, antioch and brentwood dealing with low visibility. then we take a look at walnut creek, it's clear in the foreground. in the background, you can see the low clouds rolling by. parts of the east bay as well. in oakland, quarter mile visibility, that's also moving through the tri-valley. it's the worst in the north bay, novato down to zero visibility. once that clears out, we'll get sunshine and our temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. mike, you still have that problem continuing through sunol.

>> it doesn't show on the highlighting, which we would see in kind of the mustard color. we are looking at the possibility for fog creeping into the area, along with this crash that's going southbound 680. this crash still reports cars in the middle of the roadway. it jams up and merges with folks coming off of 84 and out of the tri-valley. now, more of that mustard color, it's tougher to see in other parts of the east bay and through the north bay, as we've been seeing all morning, right around the richmond bridge and near the bay bridge. the low clouds taking a break from the toll plaza at this moment, but the traffic not taking a break. it continues to build. back over to you. >> thank you. happening today, two men go to trial accused of murdering a bay area security guard and decorated former law enforcement officer who was protecting a tv news crew. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live this morning. i understand the investigation itself is still open, right? >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, laura and

marcus. that is because law enforcement is still looking for a third suspect in connection with this murder, and they have recently increased the reward. but there are the two suspects who are in custody, who will go on trial in a couple of hours from now. their trial will start at 9:00 in oakland. mitchell and hale have been charged in the murder of kevin nishida. nishida was a retired police officer, having worked for the san jose and hayward police departments. he was guarding a tv news crew when he was shot thanksgiving week of 2021. nishida died in the hospital three days later. mitchell is accused of pulling the trigger, while hale is accused of being an accomplice. nishida's widow is pushing for the recall of alameda district attorney pamela price. she said she feels the men accused of her husband's murder are not being prosecuted aggressively enough. back to the third suspect i mentioned earlier, his name is

laron gilbert, still at large. there's a $40,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> such a sad case. that widow is very heartbroken, understandably. thank you, bob. it is 6:34 right now. new overnight, divers have discovered a large chunk of the wreckage of the u.s. military aircraft that went down off the coast of japan last wednesday. that's when an osprey carrying eight crew members plunged into the water. at the time of the crash, the body of just one victim was recovered. the air force says this morning recovery teams found the remains of at least several other victims. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. developing now in the middle east, a live look this morning from israel toward the gaza border. israel expanding its push in southern gaza, warning palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods. residents say there's no safe place to go. the u.s. is already pressuring israel to protect gaza civilians.

there are new signs the conflict between israel and hamas is expanding beyond gaza. the pentagon says uss carney shot down two houthi drones in southern red sea yesterday. the move was intended to protect three commercial vessels. the first targeted ship carried a flag from the bahamas. hours later, missiles struck down two ships based in panama and the united kingdom. houthi rebels from yemen are claiming responsibility. 6:35 right now. a mega merger shaking up the airline industry, alaska airlines wants to buy hawaiian airlines, a deal worth nearly $2 billion. scott mcgrew is here to break this down. it's something we've seen before. the government is going to have to make final approval. >> right and the government has been grumpy about these sorts of things lately. the federal government has blocked some in the past, the obvious comparison being the attempt to stop jetblue from buying spirit. that fight is still in court. this one is a bit different

because alaska and hawaiian don't share many routes. so we would assume there would be roughly the same number of flights after the proposed merger as there were before. and neither is a low cost airline, so companies could argue they won't be raising fares. here is the head of alaska airlines over the weekend. >> this combination will allow us to better serve the people of hawaii, expand alaska's reach across the pacific and create an even stronger airline. >> stronger indeed. alaska airlines purchasing virgin america a few years back. >> a couple years back. i was sorry to see that go. >> i never got to fly it. >> it was pretty cool, you could order at your seat. this would be different than that. yes, it would be the same in that they would absorb an airline, but in this case alaska is proposing to keep the hawaiian brand. they got rid of the virginia america brand. the other thing that's different, marcus, is that virgin flew all kinds of places and hawaiian flies, obviously,

to hawaii. when you only have that one destination, you are definitely putting your financial eggs in one basket. you remember they had the covid restrictions in hawaii, then you've got the fire in maui and the maui officials saying please do not come. if you're hawaiian, you've got big trouble. the other carriers, southwest and united that fly to hawaii, they're taking people to seattle and phoenix and chicago. they were able to stay more financially solvent at a time when hawaiian really suffered. >> a lot of people like hawaiian airlines. >> laura was talking about the special drinks. all the virgin america stuff is gone, but it sounds like, if this goes through, they'll keep all the cool things that keep hawaiian hawaiian. >> mahalo it is. >> they have the lays with flowers and they give you the drink, put you in the hawaiian spirit. new at 6:00, another business joining the san francisco exodus, the lego store

on market street is the most recent to fall. the store is located inside san francisco center mall and closed last thursday. they say the company is reviewing the store portfolio and helping employees while they search for new jobs. you may recall nordstrom closed its location in the san francisco centre in august. the company said the dynamics of the san francisco market has changed over the past few years and there's a lot less foot traffic. the mall operator, westfield, gave up control of san francisco centre earlier this year. 6:39 this morning, taking a live look. a beautiful shot for you in downtown san jose, christmas in the park. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all the beauty we see across the bay area, but that does come with fog. >> yes, it's been in spots. the north bay, parts of the delta, and the fog rolling across the bay into san francisco. this is where the golden gate bridge is. we can't see it as of now

because we're above the fog. we went from having some spotty weekend showers to now some patchy fog. we're watching the coastline for some dangerous surf conditions and some beach hazards for today. and then rain will return for the middle of the week. as we take a look at morgan hill, we're starting out partly to mostly cloudy, temperatures in the low 50s this morning. we'll be at 62 at noon, and a beautiful sunny afternoon as we reach into the mid-60s. we'll talk about more changes ahead coming up. you see all this yellowish in the north bay and there's much lower visibility. over here, highway 4 shows slowing generally, the fog may creep in. we do see the slowdown creeping toward the walnut creek interchange. not a major surprise. a good volume of traffic. smooth drive toward the richmond bridge, toward the san rafael side. just a note, all week they're

it is now 6:43 on your monday morning. as you step out the door in the tri-valley, we've seen some low clouds and patches of fog. livermore will be in the upper 40s at 8:00. at noon, we're seeing more sunshine and in the low 60s. we're headed for the mid-60s today with a nice, clear afternoon. we will see eventually some rain coming our way. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. we know what's coming our way the eastbound direction. the headlights on the san mateo bridge. traffic flows smoothly across the flat section, which is tougher to see. you see brake tapping going on.

lower visibility affecting a lot of our drivers. we'll show you the tri-valley where there's still a crash coming up. the speaker of the house says a vote to start an impeachment investigation into president biden could come as early as this week. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. congress had already launched an impeachment investigation months ago. >> exactly right. it was sort of an unauthorized one. the speaker of the house at the time, kevin mccarthy, was fighting for his job. he wanted to give the far right of his party what they wanted. he instructed committees to go ahead with an impeachment inquiry a couple of months ago without a vote. if the house takes a vote this week, it would be sort of a formality. the bidens here at the kennedy honors last night. the question for many people on both sides of this are the same now as it was then, what exactly are you trying to accuse biden of? what is the specific thing he did that there should be inquiries into his behavior? biden's critics say the

president benefitted from his office, that he made money. but proving it so far has been a gigantic flop. inquiries up until now have not been able to establish any connection. other news, ron desantis was on nbc's "meet the press" sunday morning, where he said a desantis administration would end the affordable care act, repeal and replace has been a stated plan by many republicans for quite some time. but it also makes strategists cringe even in the gop, because americans like the aca. 40 million americans are insured under the affordable care act. now, some polls show they're less in favor of obamacare, but, of course, that's the same thing. here is governor desantis. >> i just want to be very clear. are you going to keep obamacare in place and make revisions to it? is that your plan? >> this will be replacing obamacare. >> so you'll repeal and replace it? >> obamacare hasn't worked. we're going to replace and

supersede with a better plan. >> donald trump has said much the same thing, he wants to replace obamacare. looking at alternatives, he says, and lamenting that a senator stopped him from repealing obamacare during his administration. the problem is repeal and replace, other than americans don't tend to like it, is that the replacement part. desantis hasn't explained what his replacement health care insurance would be. trump said throughout his administration his master health care plan was just two weeks away. >> we have come up with a solution that's really, really, i think, very good. now, i have to tell you, it's an unbelievably complex subject. nobody knew that health care could be so complicated. >> they will have so many options. this will cost the united states government virtually nothing. and people will have great, great health care. >> but we never saw it. you remember the senate came

within moments of ending obamacare, but without a plan to replace it. it was republican senator john mccain, who at the last second turned his thumb down on the idea of repealing without replacement, and the affordable care act continued. speaking of names from the past, former congresswoman liz cheney will on the "today" show. she has a new memoir. a new report is raising new concerns about our nation's air traffic controllers. "the new york times" recently spoke with workers who say they're overworked and exhausted. some admit to using drugs and alcohol and falling asleep on the job. the faa says its number one priority is training and hiring additional controllers to help provide some relief, along with doing the utmost to track substance abuse. >> our focus is very much on building the pipeline and hiring more controllers. having said that, in a safety critical role like this, we

award. we all know this is the season of giving and this weekend you were part of that. >> that's right. a lot of south bay motorcycle groups among those making sure that everyone gets a piece of the holiday spirit. san jose motorcyclists bagged toys for thousands of needy kids in the bay area. it was great to see their holiday giving spirit. it was actually quite overwhelming. they predicted they were going to raise about 5,000 toys. they got over 9,000 toys, bicycles, the works. i helped link them up with catholic charities. those will help needy kids. >> look at all those bikes. >> it was such a heartwarming story to be a part of this weekend. it was nice to see. >> we didn't get video of you on your huge harley. >> i know. i don't think my feet would touch the sides, right? can you lower the seat for me, please? >> we'll put you in a side car. >> that was great to see. we're going to have some more nice weather for whatever you have planned, and we're starting out with some dense fog this morning. we have to get through this, but the rest of the day is looking really nice. low visibility as you're making your way through the tri-valley, and that's a look at 580, where you can barely see headlights coming through dublin. we've seen quarter mile visibility in oakland. it just remains at zero coming through novato. the north bay, parts of the delta under a dense fog advisory, so we are going to run into those spots where we get that really dense fog. we call this this time of year tule fog, where we see after the first big rainfall the moisture condensing in the ground. it really is thick through the sacramento, central valley, and then it comes through the mountain gaps into the south county. we see it come through parts of the tri-valley, and then we see it coming through the delta and into the north bay as well.

those are the areas affected by fog this morning. we're watching out to see when we could get some rain. it's been to our north and there will be some more spotty showers moving through. but some more widespread showers in the forecast for wednesday morning, and then quickly sweeping through by noon to 1:00. for the evening, it is clearing out. there could be lingering showers on thursday, but overall we're looking at a quarter to half inch of rain over the next few days. going beyond that, the storm track lifts to the north and we'll have dry conditions for the weekend. looking at our seven-day forecast, rain chances between wednesday and thursday, and then we're going to see much cooler air coming in behind that cold front, and our highs go from low 70s to start the week to upper 50s by friday. mike, you were looking at the worst of the slowing in the east bay. >> it's not a surprise in the general sense. a slow driving traveling from the east bay across the san mateo bridge. over here, the worst is in the

tri-valley. getting a little better over the last few minutes as they got word that all lanes have cleared at andrate. traffic is lighter than a typical monday, but tough pleasanton toward sunol. westbound 84 making a quicker recovery. we have a smooth drive for the east bay. we had a lot of slowing toward walnut creek. there may have been patchy fog through the area. we see it registering, but slowing at the toll plazas. back to you. 6:52 right now. happening now, south bay leaders will lay out a plan that may soon allow more people to make it in the bay. it's a proposal to add 700 new affordable homes for agricultural workers. the idea of funding it is in part through a housing bond approved by voters back in 2016. a news conference is scheduled for noon today ahead of a board of supervisors vote tomorrow. top stories we're following, including new tensions in the middle east. this as israel expands its ground offensive in gaza.

6:57 on your monday morning. welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay." >> we begin with a live look this morning from israel toward the gaza border, and israel is expanding its ground offensive into southern gaza, warning palestinians to evacuate specific neighborhoods. residents say there's no safe place to go. this comes amidst new signs the conflict between israel and hamas is expanding beyond gaza.

the pentagon saying the uss carney shot down two houthi drones in the southern red sea yesterday. the move was intended to protect three commercial vessel targets. the first targeted ship carried a flag from the bahamas. hours later, missiles struck two ships based from panama and the united kingdom. houthi rebels from yemen are claiming possibility. cal state college students may want to brace for a bumpy week because thousands of faculty members are organizing a rolling strike. we have a live look at cal poly pomona where the action will begin. the rolling walkout will correctly san francisco state tomorrow. system-wide it will happen for 30,000 professors, librarian, coaches, they're all planning to walk off the job over the next four days. san francisco school workers will not walk off the job. trade workers include plumbers, carpenters and roofers all set to hold a one-day strike.

late last night both sides announced a memorandum of understanding in place, with sides agreeing to negotiate in good faith to address outstanding grievances, and a plan to reach a new deal by the end of january. airline industry waking up to a new mega merger. alaska airlines plans to buy hawaiian airlines in a deal valued at nearby $2 billion. if it's approved, it will expand alaska's network and allow for more direct flights for passengers. the boards of each company have already agreed to the deal. first announced over the weekend. it still needs the green light from shareholders and ultimately u.s. regulators, but it may not be clear sailing because regulators are currently trying to block similar mergers. alaska's ceo is confident the deal will go through. kari has been keeping tabs of the fog out there this morning. of course it affects drivers, too. is it going to clear? >> it's going to take a while.
