one of the most exciting games of the nfl season. >> he's got it >> today, tuesday, december 5th, 2023 >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda hot by. from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. well, good morning it is good to see you. welcome in thank you for joining us it is a tuesday morning, and it is a busy one. >> hi, everybody good morning we want to get right to that breaking news out of virginia overnight. a massive house explosion in arlington near washington, d.c officials are on the scene now. investigating what caused that home to burst into flames. >> we do know that before the nbc's tom costello joins us with more >> reporter: the blast police were on the scene they were serving a search warrant to a man reportedly firing off a flair gun nbc's tom costello joins us with more hey, tom, good morning >> reporter: yeah, hoda, good morning. so the police have cordoned off several blocks around this house. this was just a massive explosion.

as you said, police were already there trying to execute a search warrant. they said that somebody inside had been firing off flairs neighbors tell me that the suspect had been acting strangely over the last few years. suddenly last night, the entire house went up in a massive ball of flame and you could feel it for blocks in the area >> the massive explosion was caught on camera, literally blowing a home to pieces in arlington, virginia. >> we need all fire we can get the house has exploded, i believe. >> i was laying in my bed, and then just it felt like we got attacked. >> reporter: police were already at the scene moments before the blast. officers were trying to access the property and execute a search warrant a s.w.a.t. team had responded to the home hours earlier, after receiving reports of shots fire. officers determined someone

inside had actually discharged a flair gun 30 to 40 times. >> as officers attempted to execute that search warrant this evening, the suspect inside the residents heard several rounds the house subsequently exploded. >> reporter: the explosion rocked the entire surrounding area my family and i are fine but our house shook and we could see the flames from our front yard police believe the suspect was alone inside the home when the blast occurred they have not been able to determine if the home was blown up on purpose. authorities also indicate they did not have immediate information about any prior incidents at the house, but neighbors describe the man living there as a character who covered his windows with tinfoil. this morning, residents nearby are grateful to be safe after a terrifying night. >> just scary to think this is happening around us and could happen in what i thought was a safe community >> reporter: you saw in that video the police were literally sitting there with their police

cars right in front of the house. amazingly, none of them was seriously injured. nobody went to the hospital, but that suspect inside still unaccounted for. hoda >> all right tom costello for us there in arlington. tom, thank you we got other breaking news overnight on the israel-hamas war. israeli forces stepping up the offensive in gaza while facing new calls to do more to protect civilians. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in jerusalem for us hi, richard. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah the u.n. says that israel's offensive is leaving palestinians with few safe places to go the u.n.'s humanitarian chief putting it bhluntly, saying evey time we think things in gaza can't get more apocalyptic, they do the israeli military this morning is launching more attacks in southern gaza, and ordering hundreds of thousands of palestinians who live in the city of khan younis or were displaced there to move even further south. the chief of staff of the

israeli military says the operations in southern gaza will be just as intense, just as powerful as what northern gaza has seen so far. after the deadly massacre by hamas, israel began its war two months ago attacking in northern gaza it ordered palestinians at the time to move south khan younis now under attack is in the south the only place left to go is rafah, right on the egyptian border this is rafah now, massively overcrowded with not nearly enough food or places to sleep no fresh water and a high risk of disease where are we supposed to go from herel mission is to destroy hamas and expel them from gaza. leaving pa into the sea, asked this man many palestinians believe israel's real mission is to destroy hamas and expel palestinians from gaza the egyptian government suspects the same and has sealed the border, leaving palestinians pinned in, shuffled from place to place and under attack. israel says it is doing all its can to avoid civilian

progress and that israeli troops have located 800 hamas tunnels so far and destroyed 500 of them >> richard engel in jerusalem for us this morning. richard, thank you meantime, the recent and dramatic rise of anti-semitic attacks and protests on college campuses across the country front and center on capitol hill this morning the presidents of three top universities now being called before congress. ryan nobles covers capitol hill for us what are we expecting today? >> reporter: good morning. the presidents of penn, harvard and m.i.t. will be front and center to answer questions from lawmakers about what they're doing to combat anti-semitism in responding to accusations they allowed it to grow on campuses after reports of hate-filled speech and college threats the college presidents are facing heat as they try to balance the rights of students to speak freely without allowing the rhetoric to get out of control or threaten the safety of students. it comes after a staggering 73% of jewish college students say they have seen or experienced anti-semitism this year.

that's according to the antidefamation league. while attacks on jewish students are on the rise, muslim and palestinian students feel threatened, especially after three palestinian college students were recently shot in vermont. hoda >> yeah, ryan. some people in congress are vowing to go even further in taking action against some of these colleges >> reporter: yeah, that's right. some republican leaders said these colleges that don't address anti-semitism on their campuses should lose federal funding or even tax exempt status even wealthy donors about to close their college books for the same reason over alleged incidents of anti-semitism and islamophobia last month. hoda >> ryan nobles for us in d.c. ryan, thank you. we turn to politics with the first contest over a month away in iowa. republicans are gearing up for their next debate, but minus donald trump, the overwhelming

a fatal stabbing at a busy macy's in philadelphia authorities say one security guard was killed, another hurt, when they were attacked by a man who tried to steal from the store. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us now with details on this hey, steph, good morning >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. for many here in philadelphia this macy's downtown is a holiday highlight, especially the annual light show. but this morning, it is also a crime scene after police say a shoplifter attacked those two security guards who were unarmed with a knife this morning, the macy's in downtown philadelphia is marked with yellow crime scene tape police investigating a deadly double stabbing they say happened monday after two unarmed security guards stopped a would be shoplifter. >> the security here backs off, takes the merchandise back, allows the male to go on >> reporter: about ten minutes later, police say the man returned to the store and stabbed one of the guards and then the other after he tried to help the suspect who fled on a subway was later arrested at a station a few stops away

both security guards were taken to the hospital where one died from his injuries. >> it started as a retail theft. upgraded obviously to a robbery. and then led ultimately to a homicide so, again, it is a tragic situation. >> reporter: according to philadelphia police, this macy's store is a hot bed of shopping lifting with over 250 reported retail thefts so far this year in a statement to nbc news, macy's says it is heart broken about the incident, adding insuring the safety and well being of customers and colleagues is always our top priority the deadly incident comes as retail crimes have been getting a lot of attention nationwide. though there's conflicting data on nationwide shoplifting, it is up in some major cities including new york and los angeles. where a flash mob recently stole $12,000 worth of apparel from a nike store in philadelphia, police say there's been an uptick in property theft this year, including shoplifting. now one of the city's most popular department stores has

strike. this is the second of four one-day csu strikes this week. the only one in the bay area. a similar strike impacted cal poly pomona yesterday. sf state leaders are not clear about the impact it will have on classes today, but next week is finals week. san francisco supervisors today will consider adding their voices to calls for a long-term cease-fire in the middle east. the resolution also calls for more humanitarian aid and the release of hostages. similar measure have recently nite emotional debate in esmong oakland and richmond, and palestinian supporters are planning to ask san jose council members to issue a similar resolution. there's a dense fog advisory out this morning. kari has a look at the areas affected. >> we've seen a lot more fog moving into san francisco and into the peninsula. parts of the east bay. just allow extra time to get to work this morning. as we go into this afternoon, it's going to be mostly sunny and headed for the upper 60s.

far from the popular resort where she was staying. nbc's sam brock is here with more sam, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning, guys. good morning we report on shark attacks all the time, and rarely are they deadly and rarely in the month of december. but this instance in nassau is the worst case scenario. she was paddling three miles from shore, according to police, she was attacked by the time life guards could get to her, it was too late. >> reporter: tragedy in pa paradise overwhelming a popular caribbean resort this boat returning to shore carrying a 44-year-old woman from boston bitten by a shark while paddle boarding off the beach with a male relative >> she suffered serious injuries to the right hip region and also her right upper limb >> reporter: police say a life guard from the popular sandals resort responded from a rescue boat getting the pair out of the water and administering cpr when they came back, but the woman

this home. we have a camera that gives you a better perspective there is nothing left in this home here in the boston area of arlington, virginia. it was about 8:00 last night when this house just exploded in an enormous fireball that shook the entire area. people in the surrounding area for blocks heard and felt this incredible glass the bottom line is this started in the afternoon police got a call here that somebody at the residence was firing off a weapon. they found that individual firing off a flair gun, 30 to 40 rounds they asked him to stop they tried to approach the house. called in a s.w.a.t. team. they were involved in a standoff in front of this house for a good portion of the evening. then at 8:00 as they were trying to make contact with them, suddenly the entire house exploded nobody, believe it or not, nobody on the outside was injured, despite the fact that police were on the front yard and the suspect inside of that
