are heading out the door, and seeing light rain in parts of the north bay as well as the peninsula. we are seeing showers continuing around pacifica, and that's making its way over closer to 280, and that could rewet the roads once again. most of us had about 0.1 of rain. i will be tracking more rain and we will talk about how much more to expect in a few minutes. mike, you have a closure in palo alto. >> yeah, it was there this time yesterday, and it is right by our camera. don't know why it's closed because it's not on the chp grid or the caltrans grid, but there are flashing lights indicating work. and then on the rest of the bay

feeling so strongly connected and so strongly proud of who they are. >> reporter: the power of one candle to make a ripple effect and make a difference, and that's what we are celebrating here in san francisco, in the bay area, and other parts of the world as hanukkah begins. back to you. >> thank you, ginger. it's 5:05 right now. switching gears, and new details are coming to light on the university of las vegas, and a gunman opened fire killing three. >> and jay gray joins us from that campus. i understand new details about the suspect and the ongoing investigation this morning. >> reporter: yeah, marcus, laura, good morning. it all happened just behind the student union here in the business school on the fourth floor of the business school is where the shots were first fired. look, police have not released

the names of the victims or suspect. we know it's a former college professor. we don't know at this point if he has any ties to unlv. he was armed with a pistol when he opened fire just before noon. as gunshots explode on the unlv campus, students scramble for cover. at least three victims didn't have a chance to hide, killed by the gunman. several others wounded. minutes later police move in quickly tracking down the suspect and eliminating the threat. >> if it had not been for the heroic actions of the one of the police officers that responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken. >> reporter: the campus remained locked down for hours, and parents gathered outside.

>> she was crying and hysterical saying she heard the gunshots and screaming. i am relieved she's okay, but still scared that she's not with me. >> reporter: fear survivors are struggling to comprehend. >> college is supposed to be the best time of your life, not the end of it. >> reporter: students concerned for their safety, while coping with overwhelming loss. a large area of the campus is still locked down right now, and investigators focus there and at a residence in henderson, a suburb of las vegas, 20 or 30 minutes away. they are searching for any evidence that may help them to understand how and why the tragedy unfolded here. marcus and laura? >> jay, thank you. the "today" show is also following developments out of vegas with crews on campus where another community grieves.

that coverage begins at 7:00 after "today in the bay." and then an east bay store is targeted by smash and grab robbers, and that was in danville. the video shows two men entering and one smashing a jewelry case and both grabbing the jewelry and taking off. a getaway car was waiting outside. by the time police arrived robbers were long gone, and while nobody inside was injured, the robbery left the employees on edge. today marks 82 years since the day that lives on in infamy, the bombing by japan in world war ii. and the beacon at the top of mount diablo will light up.

>> never forgotten. >> i was going to say the same thing. it's 5:10, and meteorologist, kari hall, seems to be tracking what is a clear start to our morning. >> it's clear for now, but we are seeing spotty showers across parts of the coastline into the peninsula. there's more rain to the north of us that will move in as we go throughout the day. the timeline of that brings in the rain until early afternoon for the south bay, but it could be earlier for parts of the north bay. we are starting out clear in san josé, and temperatures in the low 50s. we only make it to the low 60s for today, and we are also going to see the rain in the north bay by 9:00 this morning. spotty showers continue at least into the early afternoon. i will be tracking that for you, and we will talk about what is ahead for the weekend. mike has a look at the kind of gas prices you can expect when you hit the pumps today. >> we have a new lead in alameda

county, and it leads with 3.91, and it keeps going down a bit, just a few cents. and today national petroleum in sunnyvale on old san francisco road, and then we have 4.47. things are moving smoothly, except for highway 4. i believe that's the last of the crews over there at bailey where it says highway 4 on the left side. that lasted until 5:30 yesterday, so maybe that crew could be late picking up as well. a longer drive at the top. over an hour from the antioch bridge to 242, and everything else in contra costa county is good. what does it mean to own something?

bankers were before congress on wednesday, and head of chase bank, jamie dimon said he thought crypto was for criminals. the number of jobs added to the economy would be small, and we are living in odd times and initially that would be bad news. it means they have slowed down the economy, as the fed intended to do and slowed down inflation, which they did, but it did not cause a recession. yes, there are layoffs, but in silicon valley a lot of that is due to the loss of easy money and venture capital. 34,000 more jobs this year

compared to last in san francisco and oakland. 11,000 more than last year in san josé. here's a strange story. researchers at microsoft say a number of stars like priscilla presley were fooled into making video messages for ukrainian leader, volodymyr zelenskyy, where they urged him to conquer his drug problem. it sony is warning users that. the people at home bought the show, supposedly forever, but now they are -- we have to delay it enough so we can see the

southern sonoma county. we are also seeing rain move into the peninsula and coastline, and more widespread rain this morning for parts of the north bay, and that will continue to push through in the late morning and afternoon. we are looking at mainly scattered light showers, but at times it could be moderate and heavy for some spots. later this evening, looks like it clears out and then going back to dry conditions for tomorrow. looking at the temperatures here for the east bay, we will be in the upper 60s and low 60s for afternoon highs. starting tonight for parts of the north bay, there will be frost advisories going up, and that continues through 9:00 a.m. on friday. for those inland valleys and parts of the north bay, we will have temperatures dropping near or even below freezing. take a look at santa rosa's low temperature tomorrow morning, in the low 30s there. we could also see low 30s for

parts of the inland east bay as well as the south bay. watching out for colder mornings ahead after we get showers. most of us could see an additional 0.1 of an inch of rain. the pattern will change with the cooler and drier conditions. going into next week, we are looking to see if it will rain again and as of right now it could hold off until the end of next week. our forecast shows scattered showers for today. highs up to 60 degrees, and low 60s into the weekend. our mornings starting out in the upper 30s. it's about the same for san francisco. a little milder for the mornings with the mid-40s. mike, is it slow for contra costa county? >> yeah, let's zoom in over here. slowing in through the area toward concord. the last couple of days work has

good morning. we handle a lot of hotel cases. this one is a first. vince in san josé stated in harrah's lake tahoe, and he was driving in the parking lot and hit a pothole and there was more than $2,000 in damage. he sent a letter demanding reimbursement for repairs, and no response. we reached out to harrah's and we are hold its risk management department sent vince a check for $2,831.

♪ 5:30 on your thursday morning. thank you for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. i am marcus washington. kari hall is tracking what to expect out there. >> we have a little lingering showers this morning, light rain and then more widespread rain coming in by late morning. it's moving towards the north and will be in the north bay by 8:00 to 9:00. we are seeing lingering showers and wet roads as you get ready to head out from the rain that moved through yesterday. and then it will move into the rest of the bay area before noon. we continue into the early afternoon with light spotty showers. into tonight it will start to clear out. we are headed back to the dry weather soon, but temperatures will be dropping, and i will have more on that in a few minutes. mike, we may see improvement

heading into concord. yeah, over here we don't like this red. the crew at bailey on westbound highway 4, the crew has cleared from the westbound direction, so we should see more traffic released into concord, and that will mean slow into can cord. looks like my maps may have frozen. we will look at a bigger build in a couple seconds, guys, but highway 4 is pretty much up to speed. the bay area pilot charged with endangering a plane full of passengers and crew was released from federal custody and in state custody. >> today in the bay's kris sanchez is joining us now. kris, he's facing more charges here? >> emerson is in federal custody, and he is expected to face state charges in portland

today. a judge approved his pretrial release in federal judge. today he will face a judge from the state on a single count on endangering an aircraft, and then one count of endangerment for every passenger onboard. he allegedly tried to cut fuel to the engines. he left the cockpit on his own accord, and that pilots diverted that flight to portland where he was arrested. his attorney argues he was struggling with depression. his wife said he never intended to hurt anybody and is hopeful to go home while the case plays out. >> it's a hard situation for a lot of people, not just joe. for the people on the airline, and for the pilots, for the flight attendants.

>> emerson was initially charged with attempted murder, and the charges were downgraded after a grand jury heard the evidence there. if he is released, his wife will have to drive him nine hours home since he was ordered not to board a plane. holding out hope ashes are returned. these are images that show where the ashes were stolen from. this is at san josé's catholic cemetery, and somebody stole the urn of his remains. his granddaughter is making a new plea for help. >> i know he's with me, his presence is here with me, but to be able to come here and visit all of my family, and he's not here, it's -- i feel like empty.

>> police were able to view surveillance from nearby that site, but they tell us the d.a.'s office chose not to prosecute based on evidence they received. 5:34 right now. in the east bay neighbors are now working to move one family forward this holiday season. >> it comes after a surveillance camera captured thieves stealing a santa decoration meant for a little girl. live this morning, and this act of kindness is bringing a spark of joy, as i understand it, to this family? >> reporter: yes, the sylva family of antioch, they bought a santa decoration and put it on their front porch, and mom and dad meant it as a surprise for their 7-year-old daughter, katharine, like most kids her age, loves christmas. but this past saturday night somebody stole a santa from the

front porch and with the help of a second person, threw it in the trunk of a car and drove off. a number of people heard about the story as we reported it, including delores from bay point, and she had a second santa. >> i said, that poor girl, and i said my husband, i have one, why don't i give it to her? >> i feel good and love her so much. >> all of the negative feelings are gone. this is -- this is what it's all about, christmas. >> i feel really happy. people are making my daughter happy for this christmas. >> you are the house that got the santa stolen? >> that's more surveillance video of another neighbor who heard about the stolen santa, stopped by to ask if this was

umbrella or coat? what is the deal? >> looks like it could rain in the beginning part of it, but as we go into the evening it will be mostly clear as we go into tonight. looks like it will be a nice night for the hanukkah celebration, and a fantasy of lights to drive through. if you are doing that over the next couple of nights, it will be chilly. you will have the heat from inside the vehicle, and it will drop in the low 50s tonight and then upper 40s by the time that wraps up. tahoe this weekend, mostly clear skies are continuing. we are back to the sunshine. headed up to 40 degrees for a high tomorrow, and then low to mid-50s into the end of the weekend. it will be in the teens and 20s in tahoe in the mornings. yosemite national park, if you are going there, it will be sunny after getting wet weather and upper elevation snow. we will head for the mid-50s for

good thursday morning. as you get ready to head out in cupertino, it's dry but cool with temperatures in the upper 40s through 8:00. as we go throughout the day, a few more clouds coming in and spotty showers for the early afternoon. that rain hits the north bay sooner, and we will talk more about the timeline all across the bay area, and the microclimate forecast coming up. you will see the lights there in richmond, and there's a tow truck leaving going across the span. i will double-check with the chp report to make sure this bridge is cleared and show you how

things are shaping up for the drive on highway 4. republican candidates looking to replace joe biden debated one final time last night. >> scott mcgrew is with us, and you said this will probably be the last one we will see for years to come? >> that's exactly right. donald trump has skipped all of the primary debates, and if we were to win and skips the main presidential debates, we may not see another presidential debate until the election cycle in 2028. it's not clear how many people saw last night's debate, the fourth between the republican candidates, but the viewership is slipping as the debates went on. four candidates, ron desantis, nikki haley, chris christie, and vivek ramaswamy. desantis and haley is in second, and trump in first. a lot of the attacks were on

nikki haley, who is rising fast, and chris christie kept the focus on the race leader, donald trump. >> i want you all to picture in your mind election day, and you will all be heading to the polls to vote and that's something donald trump will not be able to do, because he will be convicted of felonies before then and his right to vote will be taken away. here's the bottom line. you can boo about it all you like and continue to deny reality, but if we deny reality as a party, we will have four more years of joe biden. >> chris christie is right, if trump is convicted he will not be able to vote, and that would

not bar him to run for president. support for ukraine is tied to the u.s. southern border, israel, and taiwan. senators cannot come to an agreement on the southern border. president biden warning time is running out for the men and women fighting in ukraine. >> congress needs to pass supplemental funding for ukraine before they break for the holidays. it's simple as that. frank i think it's stunning we have got to this point in the first place. >> former house speaker, kevin mccarthy, stunned us when he announced he would leave at the end of the month. here's another eric swalwell commenting. >> good luck. the guy struck deals, and he

descended the country into chaos. >> mccarthy did bargain with republicans to get the job, and he also negotiated with democrats and that's what lost him the job, when faced between the choice of bargaining with democrats in order to keep the government open and workers paid or ignoring democrats and keeping his job, the congressman from bakersfield chose his country over his job, and then he lost his job. congress will have to revisit the issue of government funding with a new speaker, and that will happen, marcus, early next year. >> all right. thank you, scott. one year later a bay area cancer survivor's message is the same but growing louder. we first introduced you to a entrepreneur, and he was diagnosed 17 years ago with

cancer, and his message is simple, everybody should get their annual checkup. >> 40% of men do not get routine screenings, and the only reason i think i am here is because i did actually get my routine screening. >> josh works at the national cancer institute, and is an advocate for nuclear medicine, which is being used to treat cancer. it can reduce the risk of death by 38%, and reduce progression of the disease by 60%. josh was one of the first patients to revive that treatment years ago. >> with a new approval last year for treatments in prostate cancer, the number of patients

receive the treatments. >> the doctor says there are a number of other therapies that are in development for other types of cancer. ucsf is holding a conference next month to focus on radiological therapy in prostate cancer. and then closing tonight and through part of the weekend, highway 9 shuts down starting at 9:00 p.m., and caltrans says the work also includes removing a temporary bridge. we know the holiday season is in full swing in one south bay neighborhood. we have video from the willow glen neighborhood where you can see giant reindeer. the reindeer have been putting smiles on faces for nearly 20 years now, after one man says he laid eyes on a big reindeer in

los gatos, and he told his neighbor, let's build four of them. >> all of us neighbors are really good friends, and we built this and all of a sudden they built snowflakes on that street, and arches on that street, and snowmen on that street, and it kind of exploded. as long as it creates joy for the christmas season, it makes me happy. >> it is an explosion of lights. you should check it out. the best thing about all of this is how he has gotten to know his neighbors over the year. if you visited willow glen during the holiday season you know there's a steady stream of cars looking at the streets decked out in holiday cheer. a lot of people get out and walk it. they have the reindeers on all of the homes, and then santa. it's a link in the celebration of lights. >> joining together, and you were warned about the traffic.

>> you did your part. >> that's right. let's talk about the weather, because it has been a little soggy over the past 24 hours. i want to show you how much rain we measured with mount tam getting over a inch and quarter inch of rain. most of us had about quarter inch of rain to 0.1, and there was a little less in san mateo. now as we start out this morning, the roads may still be wet as you are driving to work, but we are seeing spotty and light showers, and in the 40s in san josé. more rain is coming in and that's expected to make it into the north bay at 8:00 or 9:00. we are timing it out as it makes its way across the bay area. we are tracking storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, spotty

rain across marin and southern sonoma counties. this is possibly going to affect your commute on 101 where you have to turn on the windshield wipers briefly. overall, not yet seeing the heavy rain. the heavy rain is moving in around 10:00 to 11:00, and then by noon to 1:00 we see it rolling through parts of the east bay. the south bay, too. it tapered off to spotty showers and the rain will end tonight after giving us another 0.1 of rain for many spots in the bay area. expecting to reach up to 60 degrees in the south bay, and tonight is when the temperatures start to drop. the north bay will be under a frost advisory in the valleys as we dip into the upper 20s. overall, our temperatures on friday morning will start out in the 30s, so get ready for that. we may have to turn on the heaters as well. we have more cold mornings ahead

go into the weekend with some light showers further to the north. the bay area looks to stay dry. next week it may not be until the end of the week when we get a significant chance of rain. we have several days of dry weather in the forecast after today, and then chilly mornings and nice and mild afternoons with a mostly sunny sky. san francisco, highs in the 50s today, and you will need the umbrella so keep it close by, and then back to sunshine tomorrow. mike, you are seeing a buildup on the bay bridge? >> metering lights have been active for over half an hour now, and we have backup in the middle lanes to the back of the parking lot. that's a smooth drive and a smooth flow of traffic throughout the rest of the east bay. we are getting updates on a

disabled vehicle in richmond. and then there's light stuff up there in the north bay, and not a major issue. the most visible backup we have is on highway 4, and then we do see folks getting off the freeway here and down off of summersville, and you can see speed sensors slow when folks try to get off over here so they don't have to stay in the backup all the way over to bailey. and then into the north bay, another issue on the 680 interchange with the bridge itself over the benicia bridge heading counter commute. that would be a brief interruption. a smooth drive here at the dublin interchange with a little build here off of hayward. now there's a build, and undoubtedly more traffic heading across the san mateo bridge. the off-ramp here on 101 still
