the morning commute, for parts of marin and southern sonoma county, and the roads are still wet as you are driving to work this morning. it's clear in san josé, but by the afternoon we will see a new round of rain coming in. it looks like it will last a couple hours, and then temperatures drop after that. we will talk about how cold it gets ahead, but mike has a look at the drive. yeah, smooth flow of traffic and maybe damp roads but not a major issue. contra costa county we see highway 4 with a slower drive, and it's over an hour from the antioch bridge and past bailey and to 242. the backup at the bay bridge is building. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it's 6:02 right now. taking a live look in san pablo where overnight two people died after a head-on crash.

a man and woman in one car died. the person in the other car suffered serious injuries. people are being told to avoid the rolling wood neighborhood with the road expected to be closed for a few more hours, and that crash is still under investigation. the battle continues as israel intensifies its fight on southern gaza. israel says they are operating in the main area, and netanyahu insisted his military must maintain gaza after the war. many urged him to prioritize the return of their loved ones. today marks two months since the start of the war in the middle east, and for jews everywhere,

tonight marks the first night of hanukkah. in san francisco, the giant public menorah will be lit as it always is, but tonight there are added concerns. ginger conejero saab is live. the message from jewish leaders there is still one of joy. >> reporter: joy and being together, marcus. good morning to you. you mentioned the backdrop of this year's year's hanukkah muc different than years in the past, the ongoing war and hostages still in captivity, and leaders of the jewish faith say the spirit of hanukkah is alive and stronger. here in san francisco, the oldest public menorah outside of israel now awaits its first light to be turned on later this afternoon. security has been increased in

the downtown area for the holidays, and security is added to the event that starts at 3:30 this afternoon, and candles will be given out to anybody that wants to participate. this year the tradition, its symbolism and powerful message are much felt in the jewish community. >> we cannot fall into that trap of being afraid to practice our religion, especially here in america when we have the freedom of religion. we have the land of the free and the home of the brave. >> everybody wants to be together with other jews, and they -- these groups are forming on social media and in-person events are starting more. i just feel that the jewish

>> reporter: laura, you are absolutely right. good morning to you. it happened in the business college which is just behind the student union here over our shoulder. police have not released the names of the victims or suspect. we do know that he is a former college professor, though it's still not clear if he has ties to unlv. witnesses say he was armed with a handgun when he opened fire just before noon. as gunshots explode on the unlv campus, students scramble for shelter. >> i started watching the windows to see what we could see, and students were running out with their hands up. >> three victims did not have a chance to hide, killed by the gunman, and several others wounded. minutes later police moved in quickly tracking down the suspect and eliminating the threat. >> if it had not been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers that responded, there could have been countless

additional lives taken. >> the campus remained locked down for hours and officers working through the scene as parents gather outside. >> she was trying and hysterical saying she heard the gunshots and the screaming. i am relieved she's okay, but still scared that she's not with me. >> fear, survivors are struggling to comprehend. >> relationships, college is supposed to be the best time of your life, not the end of it. >> students now coping with overwhelming loss. the investigation is continuing not only here on the campus, but police carrying out a search want at a residence at an apartment in henderson, a suburb of las vegas. >> jay, thanks for the latest. only on nbc bay area cameras

captured the moment an east bay consignment store was targeted by robbers. it happened in danville. video shows two men entering the store, and one smashing the jewelry case and both grabbing jewelry and taking off. a getaway car was waiting outside. by the time police arrived the robbers were long gone. while nobody in the store was injured, the owner says the robbery left the workers on edge. >> i feel as if we have been violated. if you ever had anything stolen from your car, you feel badly about it. it was scary to all the people here. very scary. >> danville police are asking anybody that might have seen anything to give them a call. today is a day that lives on in infamy, japan's bombing of

pearl harbor during world war ii. one bay area man turns 100 next month, and he was 17 at the time of the attack. he said if people can listen with their ears, hearts and minds, those that made the sacrifice will no doubt be communicating with them. >> they will do so in unison with one voice, and their message and plea will always be the same, remember us. remember us. we gave our lives while in service to you. >> never forget. koehler will attend today's ceremony that is going to be held at the cal state east bay

concord campus. it starts at 3:00 p.m., and it includes an exhibit about the "uss arizona" that sank. a cold start out there, kari? >> yes, cold for a lot of us, but this is nothing compared to what we have ahead. it could be ten degrees lower tomorrow morning when we step out the door. we are seeing for now dry conditions for most of us. as we go throughout the day, another round of rain will be coming in as we see this sweeping from north, the south and eventually making it into the north bay later this morning. we do see a couple lingering showers in parts of marin and southern sonoma county as we go towards 10:00 to 11:00. we are seeing the rain moving through the north bay at noon into the peninsula and into the south bay at 2:00 this afternoon. i will be timing this, and we

you. the time is 6:15. in berkeley we start out partly cloudy, and it will be damp but we will dry out ahead of another round of rain early in the afternoon. we have a break for a few more hours. i will track that rain and what is ahead with colder temperatures in your weekend forecast, coming up. definitely damp on the roadways like here in richmond. the bridge moves smoothly but there's a backup on the bridge itself. the bay bridge toll plaza has a lighter build, and we will show you where it's the worst coming up. the head of a chipmaker, amd, says they created a chip as good or better than nvidia's and predicts the market for it will be huge. meta is developing end to end encryption for its messenger according to the "wall street

journal," and that makes it harder for police to catch people communicating about something illegal, but it's common. the head of chase bank, jamie dimon said if he were in charge, he would ban crypto like bitcoin. we get the big jobs numbers tomorrow. early data shows a number of jobs added to the american economy will likely be small. now, under normal circumstances, that would be bad news, but we are living in very odd times. a soft number would indicate we're closer to the soft landing that the fed is looking for, that they slowed down the economy as they intended to do and slowed down inflation, which they did, but didn't cause a recession, and it looks like they pulled it off. yes, there are layoffs but here

in silicon valley that is due much to the lost of easy money from venture capital. the number of jobs in silicon valley and san francisco are increasing. 34,000 more jobs this year compared to the last in san francisco and oakland, and 11,000 more than last year in san josé. here's a strange story. researchers at microsoft say a number of stars like elijah wood and priscilla presley were fooled into making video messages for ukrainian leader, volodymyr zelenskyy, where they urged him to take care of his drug problem. there's no evidence he's an addict. sony is warning playstation users the content they bought from the discovery channel like myth busters will be deleted off

the sony machine because sony lost the right to their shows. i said bought, like purchased and not rented. the people at home bought the shows supposedly forever, and now they are being deleted. we were talking earlier about how kindle had done this to users, and this was in 2009 or something. i could not remember what, but believe it or not, amazon deleted 1984, and so if you own a digital copy of something, you don't really own it. >> right, because of the copy right and they can take it back. >> if you own a dvd or book, you know, barnes & noble can't pound down your door and take the book away. >> right. >> thank you, scott. you might want to hang on to your wine, liquor and glass juice bottles, but you can get

that event kicks off at 4:00 p.m. >> that looks cool. >> very. >> kind of nice all the lights on display. >> yeah, the fantasy of lights in the south bay. i think every town has something. >> yeah. >> the light, follow them? >> don't go into the light. i wanted to show you the light of the sun starting to make its way over the hills this morning. we can see it because it's clear for now, but we are going to see more clouds coming in. let's talk about how much rain we measured yesterday. it was a pretty decent amount for parts of the north bay, with mount tam getting over an inch of rainfall, and ukiah hat over three quarters of an inch, and then san francisco and southward it was a quarter inch or less. now we have one last shot of getting additional rainfall and it continues to move closer to the north bay over the next

couple of hours. we will see rain coming in, but right now there are just lingering and light showers. by the time it gets to the south bay it will be this afternoon, so we will see the temperatures really only make it in the upper 50s and low 60s for today. it will feel cooler. the north bay getting the rain earlier. we will see showers before lunchtime and then continue into at least 12:00 and then pushing into parts of the peninsula as well as the south bay and the east bay by 1:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. it will then gradually clear out later on this evening. on top of what we already have measured, the amount we could see today, maybe 10.1 of an inc of rain for most of us. tonight the cold air will settle in, and there will be a frost advisory in effect for the valleys for most of the north bay. look at the numbers. we will wake up about ten degrees lower tomorrow morning compared to this morning with a

lot of low to mid-30s across much of the bay area. we will have more of those cold mornings ahead going into the weekend. highs in the low 60s. it does stay dry through the middle of next week. mike, you are seeing a gradual build at the bay bridge? >> yeah, the metering lights were activated and finally we see the backup there. folks are held up on westbound 80, and a crash here is on the right shoulder, and that will slow you down a big. highway 4 still slow after a crash and construction cleared late. back to you. >> thank you, mike. next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> a parking lot pothole costs him 2 grand in repairs, but the property owner appeared to be detouring around his claim. i am conmersu

up so filed an incident report and sent a letter demanding a reimbursement for repairs, and we reached out to harrah's and his claim was settled. that's right. harrah's sent vince a check for $2,821. vince may have had another option. his car insurance. if he had collision coverage he could have filed a claim. yes, he may have paid a deductible, and his insurance company would contact harrah's, and it's what insurance companies do. you might want to see if you have collision coverage. check your policy and you might find it right there on the declarations page, usually the first page. or ask your agent. that's why you pay a commission. if you have hit a bump in the

and meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking those conditions for us. how does it look? >> clear for now, but we have more rain coming our way and we will track that going north to south going into the late afternoon. the timing of the rain hits the north bay around 8:00 to 9:00. we will see more of the showers moving down into san francisco and the peninsula around lunchtime. then into the south bay by early in the afternoon. scattered showers in the forecast until this evening, but then after that cold air will be settling in, so i will have more on that and we will take a look at weekend events in your forecast, coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we will check back with you. the bay area pilot charged with endangering an airplane full of passengers and crew was transferred from federal to state custody in oregon. >> today in the bay's kris

sanchez joins us now. kris, he faces more charges? >> yeah, he faces state and federal charges. a federal judge allowed him a pretrial release, but he will be arraigned on a single felony count of endangering an aircraft, and then one count for each of the passengers and crew members onboard. emerson in october was sitting in the extra seat in the cockpit of a flight when he allegedly tried to cut fuel to the engine. he left the cockpit of his own accord, and the pilots diverted the flight to portland where emerson was arrested. this happened in october. his attorney says emerson was struggling with depression and had not slept for days after taking psychedelic mushrooms.

thieves stealing a santa decoration meant for a little girl. >> bob redell is live. this act of kindness sparking joy in that family. >> reporter: you are right. the sylva family of antioch bought a santa decoration and put it on the front porch of their home and mom and dad meant it to be surprised for their 7-year-old daughter, and you can see in the surveillance video, somebody stole the santa from the front porch and with the help of a second person threw it in the trunk of a car and drove off. a number of people heard about the story, including delores of bay point that had a second santa decoration, and yesterday she decided to surprise young katharine. >> you know, i thought, poor girl. that's not okay. i told my husband, i have one.

saving christmas for her. >> love it. snow is falling in the sierra and is creating hazardous conditions for drivers. chain control is on highway 50, 89 and interstate 80. those requirements are expected to last the rest of the day as snow is expected to fall in the afternoon as well. caltrans warning drivers to be extra careful and give other cars plenty of space on the road. conditions may be rough for drivers but skiers will be happy to see the fresh powder on the mountain. a resort employee caught the video as conditions were pretty white up there. right now we don't know if the slopes will open today. i would imagine it's looking good up there. >> it is. yesterday we saw all of the snow very high up. palisades, siberia -- >> it's high up there. >> over 8,000 feet, and that's where we were seeing much of the

action. as we look at the live camera, things are settling down for a little while, but we could see another three to five inches of snow up there today. for the lower elevations, it makes conditions slippery for drivers trying to get there. our high temperature reaches right to freezing and then back in the teens tonight and then the rest of the weekend it gets milder as it dries out. maybe you will stay here at home. tonight we have the hanukkah celebration at thrive city. we will start out with temperatures in the upper 50s. it looks as of now the rain will be clearing out in time. also we have the fantasy of lights drive through if you are in los gatos. have the heater on in the car as the temperatures will drop from the upper 50s to the low 40s. and then this weekend you could check out the sausalito lighted boat parade, and that starts at 6:00 on saturday evening, and temperatures in the low 50s, so

chilly. there was late pickup with the construction, and then a crash, and both are cleared but it's slow here, and that caused the ripple down through the canyon pass. vasco, an improvement here. contra costa county shows a little more slowing into walnut creek on 680. highway 37 holding steady. and traveling west 80, not a major concern. the rest of the bay, the typical traffic. a frightening encounter for a driver making his holiday rounds. he was robbed at gunpoint. how an alert neighbor may have kept the situation from getting worse. one final debate from the candidates that want to replace

candidates remaining debated, and last night was down to the four candidates that qualified, ron desantis, nikki haley, vivek ramaswamy and chris christie. at this point it's a race between second place between desantis and haley, but second place gets you nothing. a lot of the attacks were on haley who is rising fast, and desantis couldn't get the hang of the debate, and chris christie kept the focus on the leader, donald trump. >> i want you all to picture election day, and you are going to be heading to the polls to vote and that's something donald trump would not be able to do, because he will be convicted of felonies before then and his right to vote will be taken away. look, here's the bottom line, you can boo it all you like and deny reality, but if we deny reality, we will have four more

years of joe biden. >> he's right, if trump is convicted he will not be able to vote, but people can vote for him because there's nothing in the constitution that bars a felon from running for president. that's something the framers never thought about. and then legislation to support the war in ukraine is tied into support for the u.s. border, israel and taiwan. president biden warning time is running out for the men and women fighting in ukraine. >> congress needs to pass supplemental funding for ukraine before they break for the holiday. it's as simple as that. frank, i think it's stunning we have gotten to this point in the

first place. >> kevin mccarthy stunned us all on wednesday when he announced he would leave congress at the end of the month, well before his term expires. >> kevin mccarthy is retiring. good riddance. he struck a deal with the lone sharks with the maga republicans, and when it was time to pay up he couldn't, and he descended the country into chaos. >> let's be fair. he negotiated with democrats and that's what lost him the job. when faced with the choice of bargaining with democrats or ignoring the democrats and keeping his job as speaker, the congressman chose country over his job, and he lost that job. congress will have to revisit

the issue of government funding with a new speaker next year. >> thank you, scott. a video showing a robbery of a fedex truck. the doorbell camera shows a car pulls up and armed gunmen rushes out to steal the packages, and a neighbor saw that and ran out and told them she has cameras catching everything and they drove off. thrive city outside of chase is hosting its own ceremony. this was the christmas celebration a few weeks ago. to mark the first night of hanukkah there will be a menorah lighting and other celebrations.

ticket and will include the skate rental. for tickets, go to unionsquareicerink.com. >> keep in mind, drag queens are not all great ice skaters. >> yeah, there's so much going on that is fun. we're starting out with mostly clear skies for many of the microclimates. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s to start. if you think this is cold, this is nothing compared to what we have ahead. this will be, actually, one of the warmest mornings we will have in quite a while. there's a cold front headed our way, and out ahead of that there's rain. we are starting out with scattered showers approaching the north bay. as we get a closer look, we will move into ukiah in the next several hours and into the rest of the bay area as we head to the 9:00 and 10:00 hour. we will see rain moving into

santa rosa and napa and san rafael, and moving down the peninsula at about 1:00 today. it could be heavy at times, going into the east bay and then going into the south bay by 2:00 this afternoon. eventually it will be tapering off so it's looking better for all the events going on in the bay area for the evening. we are looking at another 0.1 of an inch of rain. most of us got about a tenth or quarter inch of rain yesterday, but there will be much lower amounts today. the rain seems like it's in and out of here fairly quickly. it keeps the temperatures down with clouds and highs only near 60 degrees. later tonight we will have a frost advisory going up for parts of the north bay valleys. our temperatures will get very chilly. this is the way we will start out tomorrow morning. near or below freezing in the north bay. upper 30s for much of the east bay. san josé, we're down to 34 degrees tomorrow morning. that's not even the coldest morning we will have ahead. we're bracing for the cooler

weather, but also it's going to be drying out go into the weekend. there could be clouds nearby, and rain gets very close but it's not until the end of next week when we have a significant chance of rain in the forecast after today. a look at our 7-day forecast shows our mornings starting out near the upper 30s, so it may be frosty to start, and our highs make it into the low 60s. lots of sunshine in san francisco, but it will be chilly. mike, what are you seeing at the bay bridge? >> kari, the flashing lights. a fire engine here, and the chp entry said there was a fire along the roadside there and looks like there may have been more smoke in the last few minutes, and i didn't see it but it could be a distraction. there may have been incidents in the area, but it's relatively light considering it's the bay bridge. the early slowing continues for highway 4, and now we have the

shooting on unlv. law enforcement sources say the shooter was a 67-year-old former college professor. he was shot and killed by police. he previously unsuccessfully was seeking a job at the college. joseph emerson has been released from federal custody and will be arraigned today by a state judge for interfering with the flight crew. his attorney says he was suffering from depression and had not slept in days after taking psychedelic mushrooms. tonight marks the first day of hanukkah, and in san francisco the oldest giant public menorah outside israel will be lit again despite the added concerns over the war in gaza. the security around the event will be extra tight.
