full forecast in just a minute. but let's start with the race for the white house. republican candidates holding their fourth debate last night in tuscaloosa, alabama. the last scheduled before the iowa caucuses next month. >> front-runner donald trump once again absent. the four candidates on stage trailing him in the polls by a huge margin and looking to gain any traction before the first ballots are cast. >> we'll break down the night with kristen welker who, of course, is moderator of "meet the press." >> let's get started in tuscaloosa with nbc's garrett haake. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. time is running out for the four candidates on stage last night. to change the dynamic you just mentioned. a surging nikki haley was clearly the focus of most of the attention last night, some of the fieriest debates came when donald trump was discussed. >> reporter: overnight, the fourth republican presidential debate devolving into a four-way

brawl, with nikki haley and the absent donald trump taking most of the punches. chris christie calling out his fellow candidates for ignoring their party's dominant front-runner. >> he's the one who, as you just put it, is way ahead in the polls. and yet i've got these three guys who are all seeming to compete with, you know, voldemort, he who shall not be named. they don't want to talk about it. >> reporter: christie also asked about this trump comment. >> he says, you're not going to be a dictator, are you. i said, no, no, no, other than day one. >> this is an angry bitter man. who now wants to be back as president because he wants to exact retribution on anyone who has disagreed with him. do i think that he was kidding when he said he was a dictator? all you have to do is look at the history. >> reporter: but with mr. trump fund-raising in florida overnight and refusing to take part in a single debate, it's been nikki haley who's seen a rise in both momentum and money. >> in terms of these donors that are supporting me, they're just jealous. they wish that they were supporting them.

>> reporter: haley fending off increasingly personal attacks from ron desantis and vivek ramaswamy. >> nikki will cave to those big donors when it matters most. >> the only person more fascist than the biden regime now is nikki haley. >> i love all the attention fellas, thank you for that. >> reporter: haley later brushing off ramaswamy when he called her corrupt. >> would you like to respond? >> no. it's not worth my time to respond to him. >> reporter: with the front-runner absent, the night often marked by personal attacks. >> what's your version of foreign policy experience was closing a bridge from new jersey to new york. so do everybody a favor, walk yourself off this stage, enjoy a nice meal. and get the hell out of this race. >> reporter: christie also mocking desantis for refusing to directly answer a question about mr. trump's fitness for office. >> we do not want -- >> you're talking about him being 80 years old, ron! is he fit, ron? ron? ron, is he fit? is he fit? >> i think we have an opportunity to choose somebody who is in the prime of their

life. >> in response to all of that the trump campaign put out a statement overnight basically calling on these other candidates to unify around donald trump and focus their time, money and energy on taking on joe biden in 2024. savannah? >> garrett haake, thank you. let's turn to kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." trump was not in the room, he was spoken about, but it's do or die time for these candidates. they're either going to lay a glove on him or they're not. so did they? >> they didn't, savannah. in fact, chris christie was yet again the only candidate who decided to take direct aim at former president donald trump. the other candidates time and time again had the chance to and declined to directly go after him. you saw a great example there in garrett's piece. where ron desantis was asked if he's fit to serve for office. he kind of danced around that question. didn't directly engage. instead, what we saw was a real pile-on on nikki haley, but again, that allows the

front-runner, the person who's nearly 30 points ahead in iowa, to go unscathed. and without seeing these candidates collectively and directly go after former president trump, it's hard to see that anything changes. and taking a step back, savannah, again, this is the fourth debate that trump has decided not to attend. it hasn't hurt him. if anything, it's only emboldened him. >> i mean, if you add up those candidates that were on the stage, and put them -- it still doesn't add up to trump's lead in some of these polls. you know, all of them will tell you, well, just get me in a two-person race, and then that's when i'm going to have my moment. what were the chances of that? what did we see in terms of desantis, haley, christie, ramaswamy dynamic? >> well, what we saw was this all-out attempt to take on nikki haley, who has been surging in the polls. particularly when it comes to ron desantis and nikki haley. the two of them are kind of vying for second place. but is this anything more than a fight for second place?

that remains to be seen. she clearly came prepared for these attacks. you heard her say, she likes all of the attention, fellas. but she did have some moments that may have had an impact, including when they accused her of accepting these big-dollar donors. she tried to dismiss that, but could that have an impact with some of the republican base? we did talk to some of her supporters after the fact. they said that they felt like this was not her best debate, savannah. >> kristen, thank you. i know you'll be talking about i know you'll be talking about that and more sunday morning on "meet the press." let's turn now to that mass shooting on the campus of the university of nevada's las vegas. a lone gunman opening fire, killing three people and killed and injuring another person and this morning, we're learning more about the victims. and that shooter. nbc's steve patterson is at unlv with the latest. hey, steve, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. multiple law enforcement sources now confirming the identity of the suspect as 67-year-old

anthony polito, a career college professor who at some point was turned down from a job interview here. police, though, waiting to ascribe a motive. meanwhile, campus remains shut down as the community grieves after that terrifying attack. a day of terror on the campus of unlv. just before noon, police say a gunman opened fire on the fourth floor of the business school building, killing three and wounding a fourth before being shot and killed by university police. >> armed confrontation of the suspect by law enforcement stopped the suspect's further actions. >> reporter: three law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation tell nbc news that the gunman was a male in his 60s. the suspect had been reportedly turned away from a job at unlv in previous years. investigators not providing a motive. this alarm prompting students like brett johnson to escape on foot. >> you always hear about mass shootings and especially in schools and stuff, but like, it doesn't feel real until it

actually happens. >> reporter: a chilling warning posted on the campus website urging students to run, hide, fight. >> we heard the clips of semi-automatic weapons going for shooting in u.s. history when 58 people were killed and hundreds wounded in 2017 at a music festival on the vegas strip, less than four miles from the unlv campus. >> most students shouldn't have to fear pursuing their dreams on the college campus. >> reporter: after the initial terror, some students expressing anger more has not been done to stop mass shootings in america. >> school shootings have been happening since i was born. i was born in the year 2000, it's 2023. and i'm tired of it.

college is supposed to be the best time of your life, not the end of it. >> reporter: and we're learning more about the shooting later on today. back to you, hoda. >> steve patterson for us there in vegas. steve, thank you. breaking overnight, a new round of intense fighting has erupted in gaza. israeli troops battling hamas militants, as aid groups are warning that the humanitarian crisis triggered by this war is getting even worse. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel joins us now. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we are on the kibbutz of nir oz. this is one of the communities that was devastated when hamas attacked two months ago today. and this is the town hall. there were only 400 people living here and a quarter of them were either killed of kidnapped. and there's one thing i want to show you inside that encapsulate everything that happened here. you can see how hamas militants shot their way in. inside, this is the small post

office of this place. and all of the post boxes have been labeled. black stickers for the owners who were kidnapped, blue -- there are not that many of them -- for those who were released, freed by hamas, and all of these red ones for people who were killed. this attack happened right around now, just after 6:30 in the morning, as hamas militants went on a killing and kidnapping spree. israeli troops say they're making advances against hamas in gaza, killing its field commanders. the military releasing new video overnight of soldiers on foot, on the attack. and fresh air strikes, military officials tell nbc news, troops are finding and destroying hundreds of entrances to hamas tunnels. showing us videos of shafts discovered outside a school. >> here tees hamas terror tunnel going under the school. >> reporter: israel is blowing

up tunnels it locates, and according to u.s. officials, is considering flooding them with seawater. some of hamas' hostages may be inside those tunnels. as israel continues its open-ended military campaign in gaza, u.s. officials tell nbc news they worry if israel has a clear exit strategy. the offensive is turning most of the gaza strip into a wasteland. an israeli colonel acknowledged the entire city of betonnoon in northern gaza has been made uninhabitable. >> are palestinians going to be able to go back to areas you are clearing? >> right now they won't, but there will be an rehabilitation effort from the community after neutralizing the gaza strip, then it will be possible. right now, it's not livable. >> reporter: that means there will be no homes to return to for many of the palestinians who have fled the north and are now packed into southern gaza. moving south has been traumatic

for seven orphans and disabled children who left a care home in gaza city. we met ayat at the start of the war. he's blind and paralyzed. now he and some of the others are in khan yunis. his carer is running out of the tables here with people who are not here, including the bebas family, this is the youngest hostage, and all of his family here in what would have been a holiday meal. savannah? >> very poignant, richard. thank you very much. 7:15. a lot more to get to. we say good-bye to a hollywood legend. >> we lost another icon. hollywood pausing to remember a true icon of the industry.

we're talking about norman lear this morning. the legendary producer created some of the most beloved and most ground breaking sitcoms of all time. his impact on television is hard to overstate. nbc's jacob soboroff joins us with more on lear's life and his legacy as well. jacob, good morning. >> good morning, craig. norman lear is the creative mind behind some of the most memorable and important shows on the small screen. at one point, get this, he was responsible for six of the top ten shows on the air. over the course of his seven-decade career, the shows norman lear created changed television and the people who watched it, tackling social issues like sexuality, feminism, and race. >> one, two, three. at the heart of it all was humanity, something he discussed on "today" many times over the years. >> i'm in love with the importance of sharing what is common to us in our own

including nbc, simultaneously aired an in memoriam card to the tv giant. lear is survived by his wife, lynn, and six children. the family shared in a statement, he often said, am i not the luckiest dude? it seems that gratitude and laughter are the secret to living to 101 years young, you guys. >> jacob, thank you. and you had one of the last conversations with him. >> he changed the face of television, and realized you could deal with substantiative issues and make people laugh at the same time, and even, reminding people about america. he and a partner purchased a copy of the declaration of independence and took it around the country so that we could see what freedom and democracy means. so he really put his money where his mouth is. >> he'll be missed. >> al, let's get a check of your forecast. >> let's show you what's going on. again, the severe weather we're talking about, we're really worried about what's starting out in the pacific northwest, where they have been seeing these atmospheric rivers.

the rain and snow has started to taper off, but this morning, this storm will be hitting the west coast, and this thing will be making its way and redeveloping right around the rockies, east of the rockies, for tomorrow. and here's where things start to get interesting. saturday, a line of storms erupts and they move to the east. now, we've been watching from monday that this area is going to develop into a risk of severe weather. saturday afternoon and evening. tornadoes possible, very strong winds, large hail from little rock, tupelo, down to houston. we're watching that. then we move into sunday. flood risk from florida all the way to new england. winds of up to 50 miles per hour. and what we're also watching is the development of snow. it's still too early to tell how much, but we're looking at heavy rain, strong winds through the morning, along the i-95 corridor, but snow developing across interior northeast. rainfall amounts anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain stretching from tennessee all the way up into new england.

"today in the bay," including that deadly head-on crash in the east bay. >> the crash happened this morning where a man and woman in the car died. a person in the other car suffered serious injuries. people are being told to avoid the rolling wood neighborhood with the street expected to be open in 30 minutes. that crash is still under investigation. the bay area pilot accused of trying to cut fuel to the plane of passengers could head back home soon. he will be arraigned today by a state judge for interfering with the flight crew and endangerment. his attorney says he was suffering from depression and had not slept for days after taking psychedelic mushrooms.

ago, when she was just 17 and a junior in high school. the woman says it all began when she met two associates of combs at a detroit lounge. according to the lawsuit, which includes these photos allegedly taken that night, they convinced her to get on a private plane with them to new york where they plied her with drugs and alcohol. it's there, she says, the three men took turns raping her in the studio's bathroom. when they were done, the lawsuit says they drove her to the airport and put her back on a plane to michigan. combs denies the allegations, posting on instagram wednesday, enough is enough for the last couple of weeks i have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. sickening allegations have been made against me for a quick payday let me be absolutely clear, he continued. i did not do any of the awful things being alleged i will fight for my name, my family, and for the truth. this woman now the fourth person in recent weeks to raise accusations against combs, some

including rape and trafficking last month, his former longtime partner, singer cassie, whose really name is cassandra ventura, filed a graphic lawsuit, claiming that combs raped and physically abused her over the course of a decade. that complaint accuses combs of uncontrollable rage and alleges that he often punched, beat, kicked and stomped on her. cassie and combs reached a settlement in that lawsuit without disclosing terms of the agreement. two other women have also alleged in recent lawsuits that combs sexually assaulted them. allegations that combs also denies and the lawsuit says the first three women to come forward with allegations against combs gave this fourth woman the confidence to share her story she says, as a result of the alleged incident, she has suffered significant emotional distress that has plagued her life for 20 years. >> thank you, liz. >> thank you, liz. some high school students in utah are being praised as heroes this morning, after their quick action saved a mother and her young son.

welcome back. this morning on your health, a welcome back this morning on your health, a guide to help you sort through sugar and sugar alternatives what are the pros and cons and how do you decide what's best for you? dr. raka kumar is an endocrinologist. doctor from cornell medical center doctor, good morning >> good morning. >> i feel like we do have more choices than ever. all the different-colored packets and liquids and so, how do you -- why do you think people are moving away from sugar and looking for these sugar alternatives >> so, in general, people are moving away from table sugar or sucrose, because we're in the middle of a diabetes and obesity epidemic in the united states. and for the past 20 to 40 years, most americans have been consuming too much sugar for our health >> and what are some of the pros and cons of going to a sugar alternative as opposed to just cutting out sweet stuff altogether >> so the pros of switching to an artificial sweetener or alternative could be that you still get the satisfaction of a sweet taste, without the risk.

so, the cavities, the weight gain, the spike in blood sugar so you still get the satisfaction of having something sweet without the health risks >> and what are some of the risks? i mean, i've read stories and i think there was a controversial study that the fda didn't exactly approve of that suggested some of these sweeteners might be a carcinogen a cancer causer. what's the latest on that? >> you're absolutely right the concern has been that at high exposures over long periods of time, there could be an increased risk of cancer or dna damage when high levels of artificial sweeteners are consumed >> dna damage, that sounds serious. what does that look like in real life >> what that means in real life, dna is the blueprint of everything that happens in our body dna lives inside of cells. and at high levels of sugar or artificial sweeteners, the ability of dna to repair itself is inhibited it's called oxidative stress and when dna can't repair the mistakes it makes, it increases the risks of inpla nation,

diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease >> so when you're talking about all of this range. the pink stuff, the yellow stuff, the stuff you can squeeze in, stevia, is one better than the other in terms of your health >> it totally depends who you are. if somebody is young, lean, fit, i would say, a bit of the real stuff, table sugar, is the way to go. if somebody is at risk of weight gain, concerned about their weight, has pre-diabetes or diabetes, they may want to switch to a non-nutritive sweetener. that means low-calorie, no-calorie alternative and there are ones that are made in a lab like sucralose or splenda, saccharin or nutrasweet, asparatame which we find in many diet sodas. there are plant derived sweet nears like stevia and monkfruit. they're not quite as sweet there are plant derived sweeteners they're not quite as sweet

depends on the taste somebody likes and whether they are already accustomed to something very sweet, they might use a saccharin or a splenda >> and your palate gets used to it, doesn't it sometimes those sugar substitutes are almost sweeter than sugar >> that's one of the concerns, actually is that when you get used to these, your brain craves it and could actually alter feeding behavior meaning when you get used to this level of sweetness, regular, naturally occurring sweetness, like in fruit may not appeal to you anymore and you're constantly looking for this. >> it's given us a lot to think about. thank you so much, dr. kumar craig, over to you up next, we are holiday shopping with chassie post from special gifts for golfers to
