good friday morning. it is 5:44. this is what you're stepping out the door to. temperatures in the mid-30s in much of the north bay, upper 30s from concord to dublin, and 41 right now in morgan hill. we'll get a look at where we
5:45 am
head for the afternoon and what's ahead for the weekend coming up. over here, a live look shows you fremont, cool, easy drive on the nimitz southbound with those headlights from auto mall parkway toward tesla. smooth drive both directions. we'll show you where there's slowing and check on the construction crew and i'll see if i can find more information about highway 4. >> thanks a lot, kari and mike. a troubled former bay area pilot is returning home while the rest of his legal case plays out. cameras in portland captured the reunion last night for joseph emerson and his wife. a judge released the pleasant hill man after he pleaded not guilty to 83 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and felony endangerment of an aircraft. in october during a seattle to sfo flight, emerson was in the cockpit and off duty when the pilots say he tried to cut the plane's engines. his wife addressed the situation yesterday. >> i'm saddened that this
5:46 am
situation had to happen to my husband and to these people that it affected, but i know that this has created a movement. >> emerson is now unemployed and the couple is said to be driving home from portland with one of the conditions of his release preventing him from boarding a plane. no reaction so far from the white house over the latest indictment of president biden's son, hunter biden. >> scott mcgrew, this new indictment was expected, yet at the same time it's quite a bit shocking. >> expected and shocking. good morning. these are the same accusations, the same issues that we've been talking about for more than a year now. hunter biden didn't pay his taxes. he has now. he paid them back. but unlike you and me, he didn't pay his taxes when they were due, and those taxes added up to nearly $2 million. this was one of the issues hunter biden had bargained a plea deal over, which fell through, which means now he's
5:47 am
facing those accusations again and could spend time in jail. all right, that's the expected part. where it gets rougher for hunter biden is the indictment itself. the money he's not paying taxes on are coming from foreign deals, not illegal that we know of, but definitely foreign deals, according to the charging document. he knows he's supposed to be paying his taxes, but he's not. the defendant spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing and other items of a personal nature. in short, everything but his taxes, says the special counsel. hunter biden also faces a gun charge in delaware, alleging he lied on a federal form. those were both part of the plea deal that fell apart. there are all kinds of nuance and complexity to this. first, it's very unusual for the government to threaten jail time for not paying taxes, especially if you paid them back eventually
5:48 am
with interest. so the case is unusual. it's brought by the justice department, which works independently from the white house. it undercuts donald trump's argument that doj isn't independent. he says it's a partisan group out to get republicans. but the doj is simultaneously prosecuting him, a republican candidate for president, and the current democratic president's son. trump blasted the doj for most of his trouble, even trouble that has nothing to do with federal charges or federal court. he was in civil court in new york yesterday, nothing to do with the department of justice. >> the doj, the white house, in order to hurt a political opponent and, actually, it's driving up the polls because the people get it. >> the implication of the hunter biden indictment is how it affects joe biden. the president is not accused of any wrongdoing in his son's indictment. in a recent inquiry by the house
5:49 am
oversight committee, they were unable to come up with any specific accusations against the president. but republicans are pushing forward with an impeachment, anyway, or an impeachment inquiry. that could start as early as next week. so not impeachment, i misspoke. impeachment inquiry. the authorization of committees to investigate the president, which, of course, speaker of the house kevin mccarthy had already asked them to do. also, we continue to follow any movement for funding on ukraine. our brie jackson is going to pick up that part of the story coming up at just the top of the hour. >> thanks so much, scott. trending this morning, local elves are preparing for a busy morning out there. the group dig deep sf preparing for a holiday toy drive, buying gifts for families in need, helping the salvation army's annual giveaway. some age groups, kids ranging from 8 to 12 are often overlooked in the traditional toy drives. >> that's right, and joining us this morning from a target over in san rafael is major matt

madsen from the salvation army. good morning to you, sir. happy holidays. glad to see you. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. >> first big question for you this morning, is everyone ready to shop? >> yes, we are. in fact, the army of elves is arriving and you can see a briefing going on right behind us here. we are going to be getting ready to start a massive toy drive, loading up toys specifically for the kids that are hardest to purchase for. it's easy to buy the toys for the small kids, but it's the older ones that people don't know what to do. that's why we brought in the expert. we've got young people helping us out. >> that's a good move. the thing about it, too, is this must make you feel so good to see so many people show up and want to volunteer and help. talk to us about the people who gave so much, the money raised. how much money did you raise for today's event? >> well, the count i got
5:51 am
yesterday, we were getting near $100,000. and i'm not sure if overnight that's been pushed to that number. but $100,000 is going to make a massive difference in the lives of people. >> and, of course, we want to know -- i mean, santa and his elves are working for christmas, but these toys, are they going to be given out and distributed beforehand? when are they going to be given out? >> well, these toys, we're going to load them up after we have a great picture with a massive pile of all the toys. we're going to load them onto our truck, bring them down to our warehouse in san francisco and distribute them on the 19th to families that have come to us for seasonal assistance. >> they're meeting santa. oh, i hear it. they're starting to go. oh, you can see them. look at that. how cool is that? >> oh, yeah. they've got a very important job. what kinds of toys are those shoppers rushing and racing to get?
5:52 am
>> well, we gave them a list of all of the requests of the families that have signed up, so they know the stuff that has been requested. but these guys know how to decipher exactly the more specific things that kids want. that's why we're really benefiting from their experience and knowledge. >> major matt madsen over at the salvation army. thank you so much for what you are doing. thank you to all the volunteers out there. thank you for letting us be a part of it this morning as well. >> thank you. >> i'm glad he didn't get stuck in the rush there. >> it's like that black friday rush. >> friday light, and then we show the inside of that target. cinthia tells me that's one of the most beautiful views from any target in the bay area. you can see the bridge. >> there you go. >> check it out. >> they're going to be inspired to shop. maybe when they look at the

view, will they be seeing frosty windows? >> this morning it's pretty cold up there. we've been watching the north bay because that's where temperatures are dropping the quickest. i wanted to show you this wide view of what's going on across the region, and all the clouds that are stretching out in the pacific towards the pacific northwest. we're missing out, yet again, on another round of rain as it moves farther to the north of the bay area. we're going to enjoy a day of sunshine, but we're also going to have a cool start to our day. so walnut creek, one of the cooler spots in the upper 30s. we're mostly in the low 40s from san jose to oakland. then looking at our south bay temperatures, headed for the low 60s for san jose. a lot of upper 50s and low 60s for not only the south bay, but around the bay area. we get those temperatures going up and then back down very quickly. so if you're going to glowfari, the lantern festival at the oakland zoo, expect it to be in the mid-50s. you want to make sure you're bundled up because it's going to
5:54 am
be a very chilly evening with upper 40s. watch out around san francisco tomorrow, there's the santacon pub crawl going on. that's going to be throughout the city and throughout the day. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s, coming down to the low 50s by 6:00 and continuing to dip from there. our mornings are going to be so cold, this is a look at our tomorrow morning outlook. starting out at below freezing for santa rosa and freezing in ukiah. we're going to see a lot of 30s for the interior valleys, not only tomorrow morning, but the next several days. a lot of sunshine in our forecast, dry weather continues. i don't see any chances of rain here. nothing significant through at least next thursday. we'll possibly be watching next weekend for rain, but this weekend is looking all good for shopping or whatever you have to do. mike, you're still tracking that problem for the south bay commute? >> i am. northbound 101, we typically see a little build on a friday. but there's much more slowing because it lasts from about
5:55 am
680/280, all the way up to brokaw. there's an overturned rig we showed you earlier. we have no estimate when they're going to reopen that exit from northbound 101. so look at some alternate routes. just past there is de la cruz and the trimble exit. no injuries for the person involved in that crash, the overturned rig still blocking the off-ramp. over here a light volume of traffic, no problem, dublin interchange. mild slowing for 84. 680 is at speed. so is the nimitz, south of hayward a little slowing. the metering lights are on. mild backup at the bay bridge. >> thanks, mike. happening now, health leaders are issuing a new warning about tainted cantaloupe. this has led to a salmonella outbreak, responsible for at least eight deaths in the north american area since mid-november. there are 230 confirmed cases, including eight in california.
