sunshine. make sure you're prepared for that. looking at mostly clear skies. 34 in novato. 32 napa. do 40s san francisco and south. if you have plans to travel through central valley, fog is concentrated there this morning. aside from the cold temperatures this weekend, we are staying mostly sunny and calm into tomorrow, and into next week. high pressure keeps us with those warm temperatures. also keeps the storms out to the ocean. the other thing we're watching with the building of this high pressure is that we're not getting a chance of rain until we go into the extended forecast. so i'll show you the details when we might need the umbrella coming up in about 15 minutes. >> thanks. see you soon. we begin with breaking news this morning. one person is dead after a shooting at an east bay convenience store. it happened just after 11:00 last night at a 7-eleven near 23rd street in oakland. a photographer was told on-scene

a store security guard was shot and killed. oakland pd confirmed a deadly shooting. no word on the shooter. still involved in a standoff with a former police officer. former pittsburg police detective allegedly shot and injured his wife at their pleasant hills home thursday night. yesterday police issued a felony warrant for his arrest saying a danger to the public. they returned last night igniting another standoff. at 5:00 this morning, pleasant hill police updated the situation tweeting that the s.w.a.t. team and crisis negotiators attempted to speak with the man throughout the night trying to have him surrender. he fired shots from inside his house at armored vehicles in front of his residence. there were no injuries. as far as we know, he is still

not taken into custody. "today in the bay's" thom jensen was near the seen late last night. >> we need to know when we can leave our homes. >> reporter: sherman oaks residents tell us trapped in their homes hours for second night in a row with an armed suspect nearby. >> i'm concerned, because we're not being communicated to about anything. we're trying to get in and out. >> reporter: pleasant hill pd order a shelter in play from about 5:30. the same neighborhood ending a six-hour stabbed jauch with retired pittsburg pd officer early this morning simply pull ago way from the scene pap worker at a store across the boulevard from his home had no idea they left the armed suspect in the house before returning to work this afternoon. >> a bullet could have ran past here, could have endangered someone else. >> reporter: meanwhile, he's posting pictures and video from inside the home on social media and fweettweeting with police.

i'm kind of over it. might as well kill me. later, seems nobody can get over themselves for the greater good. oh, well. pleasant hill pd responded we want to help you. we want a peaceful resolution. it you're willing to talk, answer our phone calls. aacquaintance said she's worried. >> he served his country honorably in corps and distressed, upset and heartbroken to learn of the incident. my hope that it's resolved peacefully, and that no one gets hurt, including him. >> reporter: this started thursday after he shot his wife reportedly with a shotgun injuring her but thought severely. after six hours police loaded up, left about 1:30 in the morning saying he was no longer a public threat. a retired san jose cop serving as a sdurty consultant told nbc bay area the determination makes no sense. >> he's armed. he's fired a shotgun at his own

wife. all he needs do is step out of that house way firearm and it will be disastrous. >> reporter: with barricades up people are walking right past his home. everyone we've talked to hoping this will end peacefully without anyone else getting hurt. thom jensen, "today in the bay." in the north bay, a deadly head-on crash in sonoma county. two people killed around 12:30 this morning on highway 116. you could see in that video major damage to both cars. chp says two people were in the sedan and were killed. a third in critical condition. driver of that suv has major injuries. chp told our photographer on-scene the victims were "younger" but no specific ages. in the east bay, new overnight -- five people are now under arrest after a police pursuit ended in this crash. the chp says it started as a

traffic stop in san francisco. their helicopter tracked the suspects in to bay point in the east bay where the car crashed and overturned. four men, one woman were in the car. you can see them in the video crawling out of the rear of the window of the car. chp said no one was injured. san francisco police are looking for the people who crash ed through the front of a cvs and stole the atm inside. it's not the first time we've heard about amf thefts in the bay area but people who live nearby say it hasn't happened in their neighborhood. >> reporter: the cvs store hadn't this property closed while crews work to put it back together at the cvs store 32nd avenue richmond district crews working to patch up the front door, repair shelves and clean up shattered equipment. police say just before 3:00 this morning they got a call about a

burglary and told five people forced their way in driving a car through the front door. police say all five were involved with stealing an atm inside the store. then got into another car and took off. >> it's crazy. >> reporter: people who live and work in the area say they're shocked to see this happen in the neighborhood. >> i guess we need more policing in this area. >> it's a terrible, terrible thing. i mean, we live here, i live right here on the corner for last, almost four years now. and this area has been pretty safe. >> reporter: they're disheartened to see the damage to the store. >> i hope they get them. >> reporter: no arrests made in this case yet. san francisco want anyone with information to get in touch. now to the pilot accused of trying to take down an alaska airlines flight. he is back home in the bay area. we have the exclusive video of

joseph emerson returning to his pleasant hill home yesterday afternoon. he was alone with one small suitcase and a duffel bag telling our crew he had no comment. on thursday, emerson was released from custody in oregon. prosecutors contend he tried to crash a san francisco-bound flight back in october. emerson pleaded not guilty to 83 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and felony charge endangering an aircraft. part of his release he must underyo a health evaluation avoid drugs and cholg and cannot board a plane. he had to drive from portland back to the east bay. in san francisco yesterday police went to two high schooling because of reports of students with guns. the first happened yesterday morning at george washington high school, where a opportunity got into some sort of altercation with a staff member over a bag that reportedly had a gun inside.

that student was arrested. before officers left, staff told them about a second student who brought a gun on to campus as well. that gun determined to be an air gun. police then called to an academy for the same reason. when they arrived the student left. investigators do not believe the cases are connected. happening today in san francisco, people are invited to support street vendors who say business is down since the start of a temporary vendor ban. the vendor buyout today is happening in the city's mission district at mission and laura streets. it starts at noon and will go until 4:00 or until food is sold out. yesterday members of the street vendors association marched to city hall to show their displeasure with the 90-day ban saying mission street become violent even deadly over the last several moss, but they claim illegal sales by unpermitted vendors at the root of the issue. the 90-day ban went into affect

two weeks ago meant to rid the area of illegal vending and illicit active, but the permitted vendors say they're the ones impacted by the ban. some going from hundreds of sales in a day to hundreds of sales in a week. their local supervisor hilary ronen pushed for the ban and not receptive to their feedback. >> she always runs away from us. once in a while, yes, she is there, and she talks, but when we start asks questions looking for answers she just run away. >> vendors say ronen hasn't been responding to them. our calls to her office have not been returned. yesterday the group present add list of concerns to mayor london breed's office only getting as far as the front desk attendant, you see there. they hoped for more of a response from the mayor. the south bay. former san jose mayor san liccardo is running for congress. throwing his hat into the ring replacing long-time 16 district

here's a look at the president's motorcade as he headed to an event, a star-studded fund-raiser in the holmby hills area near bel air. hosts included famed director steven spielberg and rob riner. row tests are expected given the tensions sparked by the israel-hamas war, hundreds of people here gathered yesterday to protest u.s. funding of israeli weapons. near the location of the president's first event. back here in the bay area, the city of richmond and the bay area air quality management district are looking into a strong smell reported near the chevron refinery yesterday afternoon. this after the air district issued violations to chevron because of flaring last month. the odor prompted the air district to post a message on social media. it also triggered a community warning system, level one, which is not with recommendations for a shelter in place. around 3:00, the city of richmond sent an email to residents about the stench. it's not clear what on-site

inspector determined. here a live look at sierra, tahoe. the season begins today for that resort. it will be kicking off the weekend with a limited footprint of easy rider express and wild mountain magic carpet for its eschool and lessons. a limited opening until more snow comes down. in san francisco, a celebration for the 500,000th visitor of free saturdays at the museum. the free saturday program started in april of 2019. since then the museum provided free admission to bay area residents. the program aims to connect people with art by removing the cost barrier to entry. the museum currently features an exhibit alled the young open 2023, featuring works of artist who live in the nine counties surrounding the san francisco bay. it's there until january 7th. my family are proud members of

once we get more of that sunshine stepping out the door, nothing in the way from you running her to errands. as far as rain is concerned, staying mostly dry for saturday. going to see temperatures upper 50s in martinez over into livermore. the valley will struggle to warm up a little. otherwise seeing mostly those low 60s hanging on for san francisco. down into san jose. a few clouds pass us by but nothing in the way of ruining our weekend plans. i want to tell you about this going on this weekend. second to last night you can catch "let's glow" at 7:00, san francisco lighting up buildings, cool animations and bring the extra jackets stepping out the door, once we kick off that event around 5:00, mid-50s. then cooling down into the 40s. if you want to stick around the city. for tomorrow, under a frost advisory for the north bay. temperatures going up a little bit. why the freeze warning has been downgraded. do 32 in santa rosa. 34 napa and 36 in clearlake. 46 in san francisco.

41 for new hayward and 30s continue for the south county. as we go on and look at what we can expect for next week, we're going to stay mostly dry and those storms stay away from us. not that they need it, the pacific northwest continues to see atmospheric rivers and staying mostly dry and the high pressure will bump up temperatures just a little bit. here's where the story starts to take a turn. going into next weekend and this is a lot of moisture the models are showing right now. into next weekend, it could bring a lot of moisture into the bay area, including some more sierra snow for people that want to get out there and ski and snowboard. estimates now are painting this picture. we can see about an inch of rain for the entire bay area and through the valleys typically getting rain showers. i'll keep you updated on the forecast. overall, enjoy the beautiful, calm weather. we have tote through the very cold mornings but i think the days ahead pretty nice, even into inland valleys. 60s continue this week. >> nice to see the sunshine!

one person is dead after a shooting at an east bay seven 11:00. it happened just after 11:00 last night at this store on harrison street near 23rd street in oakland. the owner told our photographer that the store security guard is the one who was shot and killed. he said other employees were not injured. no word on the search for the shooter. we have more breaking news also out of the east bay where police are still engaged in a standoff with a former police officer. former pittsburg police detect ive chuliam saechao shot and killed his wife. police returned to his residence igniting another standoff. about two hours ago after 5:00 this morning, a tweet from police they attempted to speak with saechao throughout the

night and he fired shots at their armored vehicle. far as we know he has not been taken into custody. as mentioned, it all started thursday after saechao reportedly shot and injured his wife in pleasant hill. after a six-hour standoff with police, around 1:30 yesterday morning, authorities left. saying saechao was no longary threat to the public, but when the shelter in place issued again yesterday afternoon. refusing to come out of his home he was posting pictures then video on social media tweeting in an open dialogue with police. a retired san jose police officer who serves as a security consultant told us it makes no sense. >> he's armed. he's fired a shotgun at his own wife. all he needs to do step out of that house with a firearm and it will be disastrous. >> people in the area have

the buyback event is at the united playas clubhouse on howard street from 8:00 this morning until noon. and in san mateo county a similar gun buyback at the san mateo county human services center at 400 howard boulevard in belmont from 10:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. in national news, the texas supreme court has paused a judge's ruling allowing a pregnant woman to have an abortion. the unique situation comes as the pregnant woman's fetus has a fatal diagnosis, which throws in to limbo and unprecedented challenge to one of the most restrictive bans in the u.s. the order came after a mother of two received a temporary restraining order from a lower cord judge that prevented texas from enforcing the state's ban. the order issued thursday only applied to that mother. no other pregnant texas woman. the mother was 20 weeks pregnant this week when she filed what is

believed to be the first lawsuit of its kind since the u.s. supreme court overturned roe versus wade last year. getting a health check jum once a year might seem like a has toll some, but one man who survived cancer says it could save your life. "today in the bay's" marcus washington has his story. >> reporter: good morning, kira. so one year later a bay area cancer survivor's message the same but growing louder's first introduced you to josh melvin, tech entrepreneur last year diagnosed 17 years ago with a rare form of cancer. his message for detection and treatment it is a simple one. everyone should get their annual checkup. >> 40% of men do not get routine screenings, and the only reason that i think i'm here is because i did actually get my routine screening. >> reporter: josh now works with a national cancer institute and advocate for nuclear medicine,

used to treat rare cancers. according to ucsf nuclear medicine reduces risk of death by 38% and reduced progression of disease by 60%. >> it's become much more common with a new approval last year of treatments in prostate cancer, the number of cancers patients in the united states has gone up dramatically and now over 1,000 centers in the united states offering nuclear medicine therapies for treatments. >> reporter: now, 24 million people a year receive nuclear medicine treatments. the doctor says there are a number of other therapies that are in development for other types of cancers. ucsf hosting a conference next month that focing on radiological therapy in prostate cancer. story's like this, join us monday through friday for "today in the bay." the team starts early. 5:00 a.m.

rest of the bay area. 41 in oakland and hayward and 35 to start off the sunday here in san jose. temperatures gradually warm up as we go on into tomorrow. upper 50s to low 60s. watch what happens monday more warmth settling in. up are 60s, santa rosa to fairfield. 64 hayward and 60, through the santa clara valley. keeping nice, cool weather for the san francisco 49ers and the seahawks tomorrow at levi stadium. beautiful and gorgeous and hoping for that win here at home. going to continue to see the atmospheric river funneling in to the north. they don't need it anymore. hoping to get in a little action, but not until we get into the extended forecast where i'm going to see this rain starting to form as we go on into the second half of next week. so we could be looking at a very soggy and snowy weekend as we take a look into next saturday and sunday. watching that storm line just continue to push on in to the bay area.

this morning police tweeted that negotiators have been working to talk to he has still not been taken into custody. thursday he reportedly shot his wife, injuring her but not severely. after a six-hour stand jaup police called it off about 1:30 yesterday morning saying he was no longer a public threat and yesterday reordered that shelter in place. saechao was -- posting pictures and video from inside the home on social media. he was tweeting in an open dialogue with police. a retired san jose police officer we spoke with, searches as a security consultant told nbc bay area this makes no

sense. >> he's armed. fired a shotgun at his own wife. all he needs to do is step out of that house with a firearm, and it will be disastrous. >> members of the community have replied to saechao's tweets asking him to come out peacefully before this drags on any longer or before someone gets hurt. also breaking out of the east bay, one person is dead after a shooting at a seven 11:00 that happened just after 11:00 at this store on harrison street near 23rd street in oakland. the owner of the 7-eleven told our photographer the store security guard was shot and killed. no other employees were injured. no word on the search for the shooter. also in the east bay, five people are now under arrest after police pursuit ended in a crash that started in san francisco over a traffic violation. their helicopter tracked the car

into the east bay in bay point where this car crashed and overturned. there were four men inside and one woman as well. you can see them crawling out of that rear window. no one injured. all five are now under arrest. happening today in san francisco, people are invited to support street vendors say businesses are down since start of a vendor ban. buyout happening in the city's mission district that starts at noon and goes until 4:00 or until everything is sold out. yesterday members of the street vendors association marched to city hall. they say mission street has become violent even deadly over the last several months, and they claim that illegal sales by unpermitted vendors is at the root of the issue. the 90-day ban went into effect two weeks ago, meant to rid the area of illegal vending and illicit activity, but the permitted vendors say they're the ones being impacted by the ban.

some going from hundreds of sales in a day to hundreds of sales in a week. their local supervisor hilary ronen pushed for the ban. the vendors say she has not been receptive to their feedback. all right. cinthia has one last check of the forecast before we go. >> i wanted to give everybody a check what's going on tomorrow herein santa clara. the 49ers against the seahawks. a win with the 49ers we're hoping that is and otherwise looking at rain in the forecast. it won't be, though, until we get into possibly next weekend where the model just continues showing us a huge storm offshore. as we get on into about friday, look at that. starting to take that counterclockwise spin funneling in that moisture from the north to the central coast for next saturday. we'll watch that. models say about an inch of rain for us. it's still early.
